2009-2010 Season Preview The members of the 2009-10 LSU women’s golf team know that the 200809 season was a success. As four starters and 90 percent of the roster returns for another year, they all know they have the talent and the potential for it to be that much better. In 2009, the season credentials showed two team wins, two individual wins, a third place finish in the NCAA Regional and an improvement to 12th in the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship. Put that with a No. 7 final ranking and the feeling of the team is let’s do it again and let’s do it even better in 2010. Coach Karen Bahnsen enters her 26th season with a group that has a lot of experience and an ability to be better than the year before and that’s where the goals start for this Lady Tiger squad.

Returnees There are no seniors on the 2009-10 roster after the graduation of the team’s lone senior, Caroline Martens. The team will be led by junior Megan McChrystal

Megan McChyrstal

who is coming off one of the best single seasons in the first 30 years of the program. The Stuart, Fla., native became the first LSU women’s golfer to finish the season averaging under 73 strokes per round, 72.7. She also won two individual titles, the first LSU women’s golfer since 2002 to win a title, and earned firstteam SEC and second-team All-American honors. McChrystal was near the top of the league in stroke average and finished 11th in the Golfweek/Sagarin performance rankings, an improvement of 44 spots from the end of her freshman season. McChrystal shot 68 in the final round to win the Central District Invitational to finish at three-under 213 and 69 in the final round at Bryan Park to win that tournament with a one-under 215. She also finished in a tie for fourth at Mercedes-Benz with a three-under 213. Jacqueline Hedwall of Sweden showed in her freshman season that she is every

bit as good as her more famous twin sister who also debuted in college last season. Hedwall was a valuable member of the LSU team, playing the most rounds (32) and was second in stroke average at 74.7. Hedwall had three top 10s and six top 20s, finishing seventh at the LSU Golf Classic with a four-under 212 and a tie for ninth at the important NCAA West Regional with a one-under total of 215. Junior Amalie Valle will be the lone Norwegian on the team after Martens departure, but she also provided some good rounds with three top 20s and a 75.2

Nicole Crochet average. Valle was one-under (215) at the UCF Classic and posted a 54-hole even par total at the NCAA West Regional. Another junior, Nicole Crochet, played in four events as a sophomore and posted a seventh place finish at one-under 215 in LSU’s team win at the Mercedes-Benz. She averaged 75.2 for her season. Tessa Teachman came to LSU with outstanding prep credentials and proved to be a big part of LSU’s success in 2009, playing in 28 rounds with a 75.5 stroke average. Teachman had four top 20s including a tie for ninth finish at seven-over 223 when LSU won the Bryan Park Collegiate in wire-to-wire fashion. Teachman’s ninth place finish was part of a three-tournament swing in which the ninth was sandwiched by two 13th place finishes. LSU also has plenty of depth to rely on with juniors Abby Oberthier (75.7 for three rounds) and Lindy LaBauve (75.8 for nine rounds) and sophomore Mary Michael Burns. LaBauve was in the lineup for LSU’s win at the Mercedes Benz and although she finished out of the top 20, she posted a three-over 219 score in the season opening Cougar Classic.

Newcomer The Lady Tigers added one player to the roster this year, Mary Michael Maggio of Conway, Ark. At the time of her signing with LSU in the fall of 2008, she was ranked 23rd in the nation in the Golfweek/ Sagarin performance rankings and ninth in the Class of 2009 in the American Junior Golf Association Polo rankings. The AJGA All-American was medalist 37 times in 42 high school matches and was runnerup the other five times.

Tessa Teachman Maggio was the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Arkansas Women’s Golf Association Player of the Year, winning the state junior match play twice and the state junior stroke championship twice. Again, Maggio is another quality signee for Bahnsen and assistant coach Golda Johansson Borst that keep the Tigers moving forward in their quest to remain in the top echelon of women’s college golf.

Schedule The Lady Tigers will play some familiar events during the 2009-10 season but with their top 12 finish of a year ago, LSU will also get to take part in two of the more important events of the fall the NGCA Hooter’s National Match Play championship and the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. that will serve as the NCAA preview event. The match play is the most unique event in college golf as 16 teams will play two rounds of medal play to determine the championship and the consolation bracket and then those will square off in separate tournaments using the match play format seen in the Solheim Cup or the amateur Curtis Cup. Also in the fall, LSU will return to the Vanderbilt Legends Course for the first time in a couple of years for the Mason Rudolph Championships before heading to Knoxville in mid-October to attempt to defend its crown in the Mercedes Benz. The Tradition concludes the fall season one week later.

Abby Oberthier In the spring, after opening with the Central District Invitational, the Lady Tigers will make their first appearance in the Kindelou Forest Challenge in Valdosta, Ga. March 12-14 will be the dates for the LSU tournament that will have a bit of a twist this year while the home University Club course is being remodeled. The Tigers will join with the Tulane Green Wave to host the Tiger-Wave Classic at English Turn Country Club in New Orleans, the former site of the Zurich Classic. The event has drawn the interest of some of the top teams in the region as the longtime LSU hosted event continues to be one of the top tournaments of the spring season. The regular season will conclude in April as LSU will defend its other tournament title at Bryan Park before the SEC Championships at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Numbers With eight returning players, four starters back and two others who have played in significant tournament spots for LSU, Coach Bahnsen and the team knows they can make a good season a year ago even better in 2010. But the main goal is still the same - adding to the list of appearances in the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship. Once there for the 11th time, the next goal comes in focus improving again on last year’s finish and that would mean getting back into the top 10 in the season’s final tournament.

26TH SEASON Karen Bahnsen starts her 26th year as the LSU women’s golf coach, loving her job as much as she did the day former coach Buddy Alexander asked her to take the job. With the way her team has played of late, advancing to the NCAA Division I National Championship three of the last four years, there are a lot of things to love about the LSU golf program. One of the things to love is the way Bahnsen coaches her team with a drive and determination and a willingness to do whatever is necessary to succeed. But she has had the drive, the determination and a willingness to succeed ever since she was a player at LSU in the early 1980s, joining the fledgling program as its first signee. One can also say that those who have succeeded in this program are those that understand that same drive, that determination and a willingness to do whatever is necessary that Bahnsen preaches. Bahnsen knows what it takes to get to the pinnacle of women’s collegiate golf - the NCAA

Division I Women’s Championship Tournament. She will ask her team to work hard and respond to the challenge, but it will be nothing less than she ever asked of herself as a player. If the players accept and understand, success usually follows. Bahnsen has come up with a simple philosophy that she followed as a player. It’s so simple, but so amazingly effective when put into play. She wants her team to play each shot as a separate event. If something bad happens, forget it and move on. Don’t let it carry on for four or five holes. Most of all, she wants her players to have fun. When her players believe in it as much as Bahnsen does, they usually a) play strong team rounds or b) grind out a potentially disastrous round and turn it into a score the team can use. Both are important ingredients in a successful golf season. Bahnsen’s love and desire for a program she has devoted over half her life to is what also gives her the smiling satisfaction about a program she has virtually helped 2009-2010 LSU Women’s golf Media Guide

design from scratch. Plus, all these years of coaching has done nothing to slow her down. In fact, she is more energized than ever to make the program a continuing player in the national spotlight. Just think about it for a minute. How many programs are there in any sport in Division I intercollegiate athletics where the program’s first recruit goes on to become the head coach of the program and stays long enough to not only be the dean of league coaches in the sport, but also one of the longest tenured coaches in school history? Seems impossible, but when it comes to LSU women’s golf there is one special lady who can recite the history of the program from day one. Suffice it to say, in college golf circles, she is one of the most respected individuals in the game today. That is why she was inducted in December 2008 in the National Golf Coaches Association Hall of

Fame. From first recruit, to four-year player, to student assistant to head coach, it was a rapid but very successful transition from signing in 1979 to taking over as head coach prior to the 1984-85 season. She has also done a fabulous job of changing as women’s college golf changed. Since her arrival at LSU in 1979, the sport of women’s golf has risen in talent and stature to the point that SEC championships and national championships are decided by mere strokes instead of one or two teams dominating a field. The list of stars from the SEC who have gone on to success in the sport continues to grow each year. Bahnsen and assistant Golda Johansson Borst, a former SEC star golfer, have combined to tenaciously recruit to find the best around for the LSU program and the results are showing with great success. Bahnsen has contributed her share of

names to that list over her years as head coach. There was the nation’s No. 1 player, Jenny Lidback, in the mid-1980s, who led LSU to the NCAA Championship Tournament and then went on to become a major tournament winner on the LPGA Tour. Also, from the 1980s, came Jackie Gallagher, a steady player who continues a long, successful career on the women’s tour. The “Three Amigas” signaled a new era in LSU women’s golf in the mid-1990s when the highly recruited trio of Ashley Winn, Michelle Louviere and Laura Moore led LSU to a succession of NCAA appearances (including a program best fifth place finish in 1998), a No. 1 ranking and nine tournament titles. Katy Wilkinson Harris ended the 1990s with bookend All-American performances in her freshman and senior year. The 2000s opened with Shreveport’s Meredith Duncan bringing LSU more national recognition by winning the U.S. Women’s Amateur title

and helping her country keep the Curtis Cup in matches with Great Britain and Ireland. In 2005, senior Brooke Shelton became the fourth LSU golfer to finish in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships, finishing a strong eighth in the individual competition. Seniors Rebecca Kuhn and Alexis Rather, along with junior Caroline Martens helped LSU to two NCAA Championships in both 2006 and 2008 and now another LSU golfer, Megan McChrystal has added All-American status to her name after a 2009 season in which she became the first Lady Tiger to average under 73 for an entire season. The Lady Tigers are again roaring on the national scene as a team. A team that was struggling to hang in the top 50 is back in the top tier after its latest appearance in the NCAA Championships this past. So Bahnsen takes the LSU program into its 31st season with the same dogged determination she has shown throughout her days as a player and through her years as head coach. The numbers show her success: 16 All-Americans, 34 All-SEC, 30 tournament titles, 30 individual titles, 10 top three finishes in the SEC championships, 15 appearances in the NCAA regionals, nine appearances in the NCAA Division I Championships and five top10 finishes in those eight events. She has coached two winners of the prestigious LPGA Diana Shore Award (Lisette Lee in 2000 and Meredith Duncan in 2002)

and the 1986 College Player of the Year (Jenny Lidback). But let’s talk off the course as well. There have been 72 Academic AllSEC honorees, 22 National Golf Coaches Association Academic Scholars, and for many years, the women’s golf team has had one of the highest GPAs for an athletic team at the school. Throughout her years as coach and player, Bahnsen has looked at the big picture of her involvement in women’s collegiate golf and life as well. She knows nothing on the LPGA or Futures tour is guaranteed for any golfer. She knows what it is like to have a husband, a family and the need to divide time between the coaching job and the family job. Her values on balancing both are what make her a special person and a coach players want to play for. Every year has brought new challenges and each time Bahnsen has answered that call. Every year the desire to succeed is that much greater and that is what seems to continue to light the fire of the lady who knows LSU golf inside and outside, backwards and forwards. Bahnsen’s teams learn a lot about golf during their LSU days, but they also learn a lot about the ups and downs of sports. She doesn’t just go through the motions of being a coach. Bahnsen knows what the girls are going through with each shot they take and she feels their excitement and disappointments. She is there to congratulate, offer a tip when

necessary and provide the consoling hands of sympathy when things done go the right way. It’s that style which has earned her the respect of her peers throughout the league and country. Bahnsen came to LSU with credentials that were excellent, lettering in golf at McGill Toolen High School in Mobile, Ala. She led McGill Toolen High School to two state titles and in 1979 won the state individual championship and the National High School Tournament. It seems obvious this lady was meant to be a top golfer and later a great golf coach. Bahnsen’s mother was an LPGA teaching professional, a four-time Alabama state women’s champion, and a Mobile Sports Hall of Fame inductee. These days Bahnsen is doing what needs to be done to keep her program in the forefront of women’s college golf. She hosts one of the spring’s top collegiate golf tournaments and while the program has a very recognized and successful past, she is working hard to add new memories to the history of the program. Bahnsen is married to LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director David “Bo” Bahnsen. They have two children, son, Darren, 20 (a junior at LSU, a former member of state championship basketball and golf teams at University High in Baton Rouge and a manager for the LSU men’s basketball team) and daughter Devin, 18.

NGCA Hall of Fame Induction LSU women’s golf Coach Karen Bahnsen accepted the pinnacle award of her 25-year coaching career at LSU in December 2008 as she was inducted into the National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The event came at the concluding banquet of the group’s annual convention in Las Vegas at Harrah’s Hotel and Casino. Bahnsen, the dean of SEC women’s golf coaches, has 30 wins both for her team and for her players and this past year took her ninth team to the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships. “I wish to thank the NGCA and I am honored to join such a great group of former inductees,” Bahnsen said in her remarks. The Mobile, Ala., native was the first recruit of the LSU program back in 1979 and

took over as head coach of the team following the 1984-85 season from Buddy Alexander who had served for a couple of years as both the men’s and women’s head coach at LSU. In her career she has coached 16 AllAmericans, 34 All-SEC players with 10 top three finishes in the SEC championship and five top-10 finishes in the NCAA Championships. There have been 72 Academic All-SEC honorees and 22 National Golf Coaches Association Academic Scholars. “When it comes to the history of LSU’s 30-years of women’s golf, there is no person who understands it more than Karen Bahnsen,” said LSU Senior Associate Sports Information Director Kent Lowe, who presented Bahnsen for induction at the banquet. “Karen is not only a coach, but a person who understands what every shot means to these collegiate players because she has lived it. “It’s the legacy you leave with your players that is most important,” said Lowe, “and it is the constant calls, emails and visits that she gets from former players that shows me how much she is respected and revered for the time she has given to collegiate golfers who have passed through Baton Rouge.” “This is an opportunity to be a role model in life for these girls,” Bahnsen said. “You can do it all. Being a wife-mother and coach requires a balancing act, but I always believe in keeping family first. Once a recruit comes to LSU, the girls become a part of my family. I am competitive -- we all want to win -- but it is all about making a difference in players’ lives. So to me, this award is not about me, it’s about the team.” Among the players who have starred for Bahnsen as coach are Jenny Lidback, who was the number one college player in the

nation in 1986 and an LPGA major winner; LPGA winner Jackie Gallagher-Smith, the three Amigas in the mid-1990s (Ashley Winn, Michelle Louviere and Laura Moore) who won nine team titles; Diana Shore Trophy winners Lisette Lee (2000) and U.S. Women’s Amateur Champion Meredith Duncan (2001), double All-American Katy Harris in the early 2000s to current All-American Megan McChrystal. “To all the girls I’ve had the privilege to coach over the past 25 years, hopefully I have been able to touch their lives in some way,” Bahnsen said of her teams. Among those Bahnsen thanked and on hand for the event were her Mom, June, and long-time husband LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director Bo Bahnsen. Bahnsen became the 42nd member of the NGCA Coaches Hall of Fame.

Johansson borst ASSISTANT COACH

The results continue to show that LSU has a winning combination in head coach Karen Bahnsen and assistant coach Golda Johansson Borst. The former Tennessee Lady Vol golf star, Johansson Borst has turned from star golfer to outstanding coach and recruiter as she enters her third season at LSU. The matching of veteran coach and former SEC star with an engaging personality that makes her a favorite to all, has proven to be a perfect pairing as Borst has joined Bahnsen in her quest that is keeping LSU in the national spotlight. Her knowledge of the sport, her ability to relate to what the student-athletes are going through and her recruiting ability has

made her an important addition to the LSU women’s golf program. Johansson Borst came to LSU from the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Sarasota, Fla., where she served as an outside service professional. Johansson Borst graduated from Tennessee in December 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. She was a four-year letter winner at UT, earning second-team All-SEC honors in 2006 and she was a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. She was part of the Swedish team that won silver in the Girls European Championship in 2003 in Porto, Portugal and bronze in the Ladies European Championship in 2004 in Moscow, Russia. “Golda has been a wonderful addition to our golf family and the program here at LSU,” said LSU Bahnsen. “She is a big help to us in all aspects of the program and has the skills and the recent success in the sport to relate to our players what must be done to be successful.” Johansson Borst is married to Steve Borst.

Support Staff Earl Chevalier

Strength and Conditioning Coach Earl Chevalier has worked in the LSU weight room since the spring of 2001, starting first as an intern under Strength and Conditioning Coach Tommy Moffitt, before being promoted to full-time assistant coach in the department following his graduation. The New Orleans native graduated from LSU in May of 2004 with a degree in Kinesiology. As an intern, Chevalier worked with the LSU football program during their national title year in 2003 and assisted with the men’s and women’s basketball teams. He is currently the head strength coach for the nationally-ranked women’s gymnastics and golf teams.

Shawn Eddy

Head Basketball/Women’s Golf Trainer

Shawn Eddy enters his 14th year at LSU and among his many duties is overseeing the health of the nationally-ranked women’s golf team. Eddy is entering his fifth year as the head trainer for the LSU men’s basketball program. Prior to joining the basketball program, he served nine years as the head baseball trainer at Alex Box Stadium for the LSU baseball Tigers. Eddy arrived in July of 1996 from Vanderbilt University, where he worked as a graduate assistant trainer for two years. He was promoted to senior associate athletic trainer at LSU in 2005 in the athletic department and also oversees training activities for the soccer program. He also is the supervisor for the daily training activities in the Dr. Martin J. Broussard training center, LSU’s state-of-the-art training facility attached to Tiger Stadium. Eddy earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology in 1994 from the University of West Virginia. He also earned a master’s degree from Vanderbilt in health promotion and education. The 38-year-old Eddy was born on Nov. 23, 1971.

Kent Lowe

Sr. Associate SID/Women’s Golf SID

A member of the LSU Sports Information staff since August 1988, Kent Lowe was appointed senior associate SID in August 2000. He serves as the primary media contact for the LSU men’s basketball team and women’s golf team. He has teamed with Graphic Design Coordinator Krystal Bennett the last three years to edit one of the top five best women’s golf media guide in the country as determined by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). His voice is also well known as the color analyst on softball broadcasts on the LSU Sports Radio Network and for the past 16 years has written a bowling column for The (Baton Rouge) Advocate that was honored earlier this summer with a national award from the Bowling Proprietors Association of Amerca. Lowe, 51, came to LSU from Louisiana Downs where he served as publicity director for the Bossier City, La., racetrack. Lowe is a member of CoSIDA and its prestigious Academic All-American committee and is a past president and now treasurer of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Lowe, a native of Shreveport, is a 1979 graduate of LSU-Shreveport. He earned his master’s degree at LSU in 1982.

Jason Shaw

Academic Advisor/Tutorial Coordinator Academic Center for Athletes Shaw serves as the women’s golf team liaison for the Cox Communications Center for Student-Athletes. The responsibility of the academic center is to oversee the educational development and progress toward graduation of all student-athletes through tutoring, career counseling and development, time management and study skills. Shaw is in his second year at LSU counseling the men’s and women’s golf team. He also acts as the Tutorial Coordinator at the Cox Academic Center. Prior to coming to LSU Shaw worked in Student Services for Intercollegiate Athletics this past year and a graduate assistant in athletic operations at Kansas State University. Shaw, originally from Rolla, Mo., earned his bachelor’s in education from Central Missouri in 2006 and his master’s in college student personnel and athletics administration from Kansas State in 2007.

More about... My favorite golf course I’ve played … Kelly Plantation in Destin, Fla. My golf superstitions … I am very superstitious playing a competitive round of golf. If I have a good hole, I’ll stick to the routine that I started with, however, if I have a bad hole, I’ll change my routine up a little bit. My favorite Lady Tiger moment… I have so many moments that I can’t just pick one. I just love being a Lady Tiger golfer and love the closeness of people around me. • For the second year, participated in all but one event for LSU and was first on the team in stroke average • Set a school record for single season stroke average, averaging 72.69 for 29 rounds to become the first LSU women’s golfer to average below 73 for a single season. • Won two tournaments - the Central District Invitational (Feb. 16-17) with a three-under 213 (71-74-68) and the Bryan Park National Collegiate (April 3-5) with one-under 215 (73-73-69). • Five finishes of sixth or better, eight career top 10 finishes … Besides the two wins -- finished fourth at three-under in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate; sixth at two-over in the Auburn Derby; and, sixth in the NCAA West Regional at fourunder 212 (74-69-69). • Became the first LSU women’s golfer to win two tournaments in a year since Meredith Duncan in 2002. • First golfer to earn first-team All-SEC honors since 2005; First All-American golfing honor for LSU since 2005. • 12 rounds of par or under, 21 in her first two years - Shot 68 twice, 69 three times.

2008-09 Season Review For the third time in four seasons and for the second straight year, the LSU Lady Tiger golf team finished its season in the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships, improving its final finish to 12th place. To get to that point, however, the Lady Tigers had one of their most successful regular seasons in years. Some of the highlights: Team Wins To win the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate in Knoxville is one thing. To win it the way LSU did is another. LSU entered the final round in fourth place at eight-over par, seven shots out of the lead. When LSU had finished the round, the Lady Tigers had posted a school record round of seven-under par 281 and won the event by nine shots over North Carolina and Louisville. LSU had a 16-stroke turnaround going from seven down to nine in front. In the spring, LSU got its second team win with a wire-to-wire triumph, practically putting the Bryan Park National Collegiate away on the

first day with a two-over par score of 290 that gave the Lady Tigers a 14-stroke advantage. In the end, LSU won by four shots over No. 3 Virginia. It marks the first season LSU had posted two wins in a year since the last season LSU had a team win during the 2004-05 season. Individual Wins Megan McChrystal showed her abilities by becoming the first LSU women’s golfer to earn medalist honors since 2002 with an impressive finish to rally for the title in the Central District Women’s Golf Invitational. McChrystal fired a four-birdie, no bogey 68 in the final round to move from fifth to the championship title with a 54-hole total of 213 (71-74-68). McChrystal was part of the reason for the Bryan Park team win as she also captured the individual title as well. This time it was a final round of 69 that propelled her to the individual title with a one-under score of 215 (73-73-69). McChrystal became the seventh golfer in

LSU women’s golf history to win at least two individual titles in her career and the fourth to win two in a season. The sophomore from Stuart, Fla. would be named first-team All-SEC, second-team All-American and was the first LSU golfer to average fewer than 73 strokes a round in the first 30 years of LSU women’s golf. Post-season Play The Lady Tigers finished fifth in the SEC Championships, but did play in the final group in the last round. LSU would be the number three seed in the NCAA West Regional and played the final 36 holes in three-under par to finish right at their seeding and easily advance to the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships in Owings Mills, Md., at Caves Valley Country Club. LSU had rounds of 295-288-285 to finish at four-over 868. LSU would go on to a 12th place finish in the championships.

The LSU women’s golf team shot the lowest single round in the 30-year history of the program to record a come-from-behind championship. The Lady Tigers entered the round in fourth place, seven shots out of the lead, but after shooting a seven-under par 281 LSU finished on top by nine shots. In all it was a 16-stroke turnaround going from seven down to nine in the plus. LSU’s 54-hole total of one-over par 865 was one shot off the 54-hole school record set in 2001. Top Teams 1. LSU 2. The win marked the first individual win by an LSU women’s golfer since Meredith Duncan won the 2002 LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic. McChrystal moved from fifth to the championship with a total of 213 (71-74-68). LSU played the final 36 holes of the qualify and advance tournament in three-under par to advance to the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships for the second straight year and for the third time in four years. LSU finished third at four-over 868 to easily advance. Megan McChrystal finished tied for sixth at four-under 212, Jacqueline Hedwall tied for ninth at one-under 215 and Amalie Valle tied for 13th at even par 216.

The final tournament of the spring season saw the Lady Tigers win their second tournament of the year and sophomore Megan McChrystal do the same. LSU built a 14-stroke lead after the opening round and coasted home and McChrystal posted a final round of three-under 69 to get the title with a one-under 215. LSU continued its advancement up the final standings, improving again to 12th in the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships. In aggregate numbers, the 67-over 1,219 was LSU’s fifth lowest NCAA Tournament 72-hole total. Senior Caroline Martens, who is one of just five players in LSU women’s golf history to participate in three NCAA events, finished with a top 25 in her final tournament, shooting 12-over par over the 72-hole event as LSU culminated one of the more successful seasons in its 30-year history. SEC Championships The Southeastern Conference has continuted to show its leadership in the intergration of athletic competition and higher education. Since its formation in 1933, the SEC has achieved both stature and stability by designating governing/ voting power to the presidents of the member institutions. They have determined the policies of the conference and through the years this involvement has been the principal source of strength in the evolution of the SEC. Intercollegiate athletics encountered many challenges in the 1990s and the SEC provided guidance. In 1993, the member institutions adopted The Principles of Gender Equity. Committed to increasing the quantity and quality of women’s athletic opportunities, each school provides at least two more women’s intercollegiate programs than the number of men’s. SEC schools began athletic competition over 100 years ago as members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized as the Southeastern Conference at the annual Southern Conference meeting in 1932. Charter members of the new conference were Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU , Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Sewanee, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. In the 1979-80 academic year, SEC championships for women were recognized in basketball, tennis and volleyball. The following year golf, gymnastics, swimming and track and field were added. The administration of women’s athletics officially came under the auspices of the conference office in 1984. The SEC currently regulates nine men’s sports and 11 women’s sports. The women’s sports are volleyball, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track (cross country, indoor, outdoor) and volleyball.

2009 NCAA championship Three LSU golfers walked off the 18th green in Albuquerque, N. M. after the 2008 NCAA Division I Championship with two goals in mind - to get back to the 2009 championships and to improve on the 15th place finish of the 2008 squad. The Lady Tigers as a team won two tournaments during the season and showed some of their brilliance in the NCAA West Regional to advance for the second straight year and for the third time in the last four years to the NCAA Division I National Championships, this time on the championship layout of Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mill, Md. But the bigger story in this year’s NCAA quest may have come in that regional, played out in 100-degree temperatures at the Arizona State University Karsten Course. With the top eight teams advancing, LSU shot its team average of 295 in the opening round over the Karsten Course in Tempe, but realized quickly this would be a low scoring event as they were in 12th place, six shots out of the qualifying number. But the team felt good about its first day start on a course that has a reputation of getting easier the more you play it. But that easier was easier said than done when the Lady Tigers were forced to count all four scores on the course in the second round when freshman Tessa Teachman had to be taken off the course with severe dehydration after a 24-hour virus. LSU responded in grand fashion posting an even par 288 with Megan McChrystal posting a 69, Jacqueline Hedwall and Amalie Valle 72s and Caroline Martens 75. LSU was now sixth at seven-over par for 36 holes, two shot in front of the cut line.

With a full head of steam and the lineup back intact on the final day, the Lady Tigers posted a three-under par round of 288 to easily punch their ticket to the championships with a third place finish. The Lady Tigers did improve their finish of 2008, finishing in 12th over the heavily tree-lined course that featured a topography change of 11 stories during the course of the round. Now the four Lady Tigers who made that trip to Caves Valley have two goals in mind again - to get back to the 2010 championship and to improve on the 12th place finish of the 2009 squad.

2010 NCAA Championship/LSU Championship History The regional round for the 2010 Championships will again be conducted over three different golf courses -East: East Carolina University at the Ironwood Country Club in Greenville, S.C.; Central: Indiana University at the Otter Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Ind.; and West: Stanford University at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Cal. The regions are from May 6-8. The eight lowest scoring teams, as well as the two lowest scoring individuals not on an advancing team, from each of the three regional championships will qualify for the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship. The championship will be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., with the

University of North Carolina, Wilmington serving as the host school. LSU made its first of 10 NCAA championship appearances in the first NCAA event in 1982 in Palo Alto, Calif., when LSU finished 16th. The Lady Tigers would return in 1986 when LSU, led by Player of the Year Jenny Lidback, helped the Tigers to a ninth-place finish. Lidback finished tied for 17th. The Lady Tigers made their longest championship run starting in 1986, when the Three Amigas (Ashley Winn, Laura Moore and Michelle Louviere) took the Lady Tigers to top 10-finishes in 1996 (8th) and 1998 (5th). Louviere finished tied for 19th in 1986 and Ashley Winn tied for 15th. The Tigers posted 10th-place finishes in 1999 and 2000 and a 12th place finish in 2001 on teams led by Katy Harris and Meredith Duncan. Duncan played the last 54 holes in two under par after opening with a 10-over 82 to finish in a tie for seventh place in 2000 and Harris shot a one-under 287 to finish in a tie for third in LSU’s appearance in 2001. Harris and Kristi Coats, who competed as an individual competitor in 1991, have the best finishes in the championships

for LSU, both finishing third in the individual competition. The only other top-10 finish for an individual golfer came in 2005 when Brooke Shelton posted a tie for eighth-place finish. Harris and Duncan are the two players who went to the championships all four years of their careers. Harris made it on four teams from 1998 to 2001, while Duncan qualified on three teams and once individually from 1999-2002. This past year, Caroline Martens finished her career on three NCAA teams in her four years at LSU. Since 1993, to get to the NCAA Division I Championships, teams and individuals must go through the NCAA Regional Tournaments. LSU has hosted the regional on three occasions (1993, 2002, 2007). LSU has advanced to the regional round of NCAA post-season play since that first tournament in 1993 every year but 1994 and 2003.

It has proven to be everything it was hoped to be. The men’s and women’s golf teams at LSU have the home they’ve always wanted right at their home course, the University Club. LSU’s Golf House offers the year-round ability to concentrate on improving the play of LSU’s student-athletes. An $850,000 facility funded by the Tiger Athletic Foundation, the LSU Golf House functions primarily as a golf-learning center for the LSU men’s and women’s teams. Head coach Karen Bahnsen said the building, opened in 2003, is a great benefit to the LSU programs.

It is helping the program’s recruiting efforts, since many of LSU’s competitors either have similar facilities or are in the process of building a similar facility. “Our practice area is tremendous, but having a building to go with it is great,” Bahnsen said. “We have a place where we can do club repairs and where we can store our teaching aids. We have two indoor hitting bays and a room we can use for video analysis, as well as meeting space. So, as far as helping their game, we’re just basically giving them everything in the world they need to be competitive in the NCAA arena.”

Bahnsen said LSU’s golf teams are already well equipped for practice at University Club, with a 100-yard-long tee box and 10,000-square-foot putting green that has bunkers around it. In all, the Golf House also contains locker rooms for the men and women, an office for each coach, a kitchen and indoor and outdoor storage. Recently the Golf House has undergone a renovation that featured a spectacular graphic design in the lobby and meeting room that showcases the history of both the men’s and women’s golf program at LSU.

University club

The Tiger Athletic Foundation had a goal of bringing a championship golf course to the LSU community. The LSU golf programs wanted a place to call its official home. Both dreams have become reality. The University Club has given the LSU teams a place to call home with first-class practice facilities and the U-Club has proven to be the championship course it was designed to be. Now plans are in the works for an even better championship course as the TAF will partner with LSU golf All-American and PGA star David Toms to redesign many of the U-Club’s holes to make it a sterner test of one’s golfing abilities. The 300-acre course was built in 1998 on land donated to the Tiger Athletic Foundation (TAF) and subsequently leased to University Club. The original vision that drove University Club’s development was of a premier course that would provide a place for TAF members to convene and play, as well as a home for the men’s and women’s golf teams of LSU. In April 2002, a group of local investors allowed the Club to maintain its prosperity and rise to a new level. “I’m pleased that local people with LSU ties are making University Club a place LSU alumni and TAF members can be proud of,” said TAF CEO General Ron Richard. Membership is offered to members of the TAF and then extended to the general public, who first must become members of the TAF. Memberships are available not only in local categories, but state, regional and national categories as well. More than anything, The University Club has given the men’s and women’s golf programs the practice facilities they need to be successful. “It’s been a great help to our programs,” said Karen Bahnsen. “We have the facilities and the space to take advantage of the opportunities to work for extended periods on certain parts of a players game that may need some help. It’s wonderful to have a facility like this that we can call our own.” The Tiger Athletic Foundation is a private, non-profit corporation which serves as the fund-raising and development arm of the LSU athletics department. Each year, the TAF underwrites scholarship and academics awards, as well as capital development projects for LSU athletics.

tiger-wave classic The History This year’s LSU’s Tiger-Wave Classic will mark the 29th consecutive spring that the LSU women’s golf team has hosted a tournament that has grown to be one of the most prestigious events of the women’s golf schedule. The Classic moved to the LSU University Club in 2000 and with the renovation of the U-Club, the tournament will move for its 2010 renewal to English Turn in New Orleans and be co-hosted with Tulane. But the tournament roots go back to the local Fairwood Country Club and its unique membership that not only hosted and ran the tournament, but served as uncles and aunts for many of the teams that came each year. Club members hosted teams at their houses every year, allowing teams to save money in the days when women’s college golf wasn’t funded as it is today. Dinners were provided by the club along with member entertainment and some of the nation’s top golf teams and players came to participate. Jenny Lidback, who would go on to win a major championship on the LPGA tour, lost the tournament title in a playoff while at TCU and in 1986 would win the title as an LSU Lady Tiger. Arizona’s Marisa Baena had her coming out party as a freshman dominating the competition. In the final LSU-Fairwood event in 1999, Duke put on the course a lineup that would become one of the most dominating in the nation. Dan Brooks brought his Duke team back to Baton Rouge to win the 2007 renewal on the way to winning the East Regional at the U-Club, leading to a third straight NCAA Championship. LSU’s annual golf tournament has not only proven to be an important event on the women’s collegiate circuit, but it has proven to be a community event as seen by the hundreds of volunteers who take part each year. It’s to those volunteers that the LSU golf program salutes for their tireless efforts that make the LSU event the success it is. Also thanks to the University Club for being a special home for LSU Golf and to the TAF for their work to continue to make the U-Club a strong test of golf.

Golf Classic Makes One Year Move The rite of spring known as the LSU Golf Classic will make a one-year move to the prestigous English Turn Golf Course in New Orleans as LSU teams with Tulane to host the Tiger-Wave Golf Classic, March 12-14, 2010. The 29th year of a tournament hosted by the women’s team is necessitated by the ongoing renovation of the home course, the University Club. English Turn has hosted several offerings of the New Orleans PGA tour stop, now the Zurich Classic, and in the early 1990s played host to an annual LSU men’s tournament. This year’s Tiger-Wave Classic has drawn another stellar field including defending team champion, Virginia. Joining the Lady Tigers, Tulane and Virginia will be Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Charleston, Florida, Furman, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisville, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, North Carolina Wilmington, Notre Dame, TCU, Tennessee, UCF, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

It represents the University as a memorial to those who gave their lives during World War I. Although it currently houses the LSU Anglo-American Art Museum, plans are in process to return Memorial Tower to a military museum as originally intended. Strength

The Operations Center houses one of the most complete strength training facilities in the nation. Completed in 2006, the weight room area includes 16 multi-purpose platform, bench, incline, squat and Olympic lifting stations, along with 12 dumbell bench stations.

& Conditioning

Strength and conditioning can be the heart and soul of an athletic program’s success and LSU has taken great strides to improve its strength program and facilities. The weight room in Tiger Stadium measures more than 10,000 square feet and serves as the home base for many of the Tiger strength programs including the men’s and women’s basketball and baseball teams. The football operations center, where the women’s golf team works out under the direction of assistant strength coach Earl Chevalier, houses one of the most complete strength facilities in the nation. Athletic TRAINING LSU boasts the largest and most complete athletic training facilities in all of collegiate athletics with both the Operations Center and the Broussard Center for Athletic Training in Tiger Stadium. Both are furnished with the latest in technology and equipment. The Operations Center training room features a full view of the practice fields, two hot/cold jacuzzis and an underwater treadmill. The Broussard Center includes an on-site x-ray room, an in-house pharmacy, as well as the largest hydrotherapy pool in both collegiate and professional sports and is one of the few collegiate training centers with a full-service pharmacy and a full-service vision center.

Hydrotherapy Treatment An integral part of rehabbing and developing LSU student-athletes is the operations center’s hot/cold jacuzzis and an underwater treadmill in a fully equipped Hydrotherapy room. The Broussard training center (bottom) boasts the largest hydrotherapy pool in both collegiate and professional sports.

Bo Campbell Auditorium The 1,000-seat auditorium is used through the year as a classroom and lecture hall. Each seat in the auditorium has space for a laptop and a modem hookup, providing each student unlimited learning opportunities. The auditorium also contains a movie theatre size screen to aid professors with lectures and classroom activities.

Computer Stations

The Cox Communications Academic Center for StudentAthletes is at the forefront of today’s educational technology. Since the spring of 2009, the academic center has upgraded over 170 computers, including both PC and Mac.

Media Training

LSU is one of the few schools where student-athletes go through media training to enhance their communication skills. Dr. Tommy Karam and Dr. Shirley White are two experts in the field who give training sessions to student-athletes here on campus. The Academic Center features a mock press conference setting to get student-athletes acclimated to giving interviews in front of both print and electronic media. Karam and White record the mock interviews on camera and then provide feedback, allowing student-athletes to become more comfortable and confident when doing actual interviews.

The Library

The library provides a perfect setting for individual study, or with a tutor as a group.

LSU Golf Team in the Community

The LSU golf teams have become known for their appearances in the community; reaching out as part of the CHAMPS program and taking part in the PGA Tour stop in New Orleans.

Members of the LSU women’s golf team experienced the Zurich Classic of New Orleans PGA event from inside the ropes as members of the team caddied for pro Justin Rose and his pro-am partners at the TPC of Avondale, site of the annual tournament. Also, LSU Athletics Director Joe Alleva took part in the pro-am event and played with past Zurich Classic champion and former LSU AllAmerican David Toms in his group.

Dr. John V. Lombardi is the fifth individual to serve as the President of the Louisiana State University System. As its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Lombardi oversees 11 institutions, including five academic campuses, as well as 10 public hospitals located throughout the state. He is also a Professor of History at Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College. Dr. Lombardi was born in Los Angeles, California and attended Pomona College where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Columbia University. He joined the faculty in the Department of History at Indiana University, where he later served as Dean of International Programs and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1987, he became Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Johns Hopkins University. From 1990-1999, Dr. Lombardi was President of the University of Florida. Prior to his appointment as President of the LSU System, he served as Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is a Latin American historian, with a special interest in Venezuela. Dr. Lombardi is also one of the country’s foremost authorities in higher education, serving as Co-Editor of The Top American Research Universities. He is the author of numerous professional publications, and along with his wife, Cathryn, co-authored a teaching atlas on Latin American History. He has taught courses in history, intercollegiate sports, and university management.

Dr. Michael V. Martin Chancellor, LSU

Dr. Michael V. Martin assumed the chancellorship of Louisiana State University and A&M College on August 1, 2008. Prior to his appointment as LSU’s eighth chancellor, Dr. Martin established a distinguished career in higher education, serving most recently as president of New Mexico State University. Before arriving at NMSU in 2004, Dr. Martin served for six years as vice president for agriculture and natural resources at the University of Florida, leading the university’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. He was elevated to senior vice president of the University of Florida shortly before being selected as NMSU’s president. Previously, he was vice president for agricultural policy and the dean of the College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota. He began his academic career at Oregon State University as a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. An academic leader dedicated to the land-grant mission, Dr. Martin is recognized as a strong voice for higher education. In 2007, he received the Justin Smith Morrill Memorial Award, named after the author of the bill creating land-grant universities, which honors outstanding service on behalf of the land-grant mission. Only six individuals have been designated to receive this award since it was first given in 1980. For his leadership in improving the quality of life for New Mexico citizens and future generations, he was awarded the 2008 Distinguished Leadership Award by Leadership New Mexico. Other recent awards include his recognition as a powerbroker by The New Mexico Business Weekly in 2006, being named Outstanding Alumnus of Minnesota State University Mankato in 2006, and receiving the NMSU Social Justice Award in 2005. Dr. Martin is involved in a wide array of professional and community organizations and activities. An active scholar, Dr. Martin has authored numerous book chapters and articles for academic journals, trade publications, and the popular press and recently published pieces for The Chronicle of Higher Education and University Business. Some of his philosophy is summed up in the following quote: “It is the tradition of land-grant universities to be non-traditional,” written as part of a 2001 article titled “The Land-Grant University in the 21st Century,” published in the Journal of Agricultural and Applied Economics. He traced the history of the land-grant movement from the mid-1800s and concluded that “the fundamental land-grant principles of accessibility, practical as well

as classical education, research and discovery in the public interest, and connectedness to all the people remain powerful and profound.” A native of Crosby, Minn., Dr. Martin earned a bachelor’s degree in business and economics and a master’s degree in economics at Mankato State College (Minnesota State University) in Minnesota. He received his Ph.D. in applied economics from the University of Minnesota in 1977. Dr. Martin and his wife, Jan, have two children, both adopted from South Korea. Amanda, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, is a graphic artist in Saint Paul, Minn. Sam, who holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and a master’s from Sarah Lawrence College, is a genetics counselor at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City.

Joe Alleva enters his second year as LSU’s Director of Athletics after being hired to lead one of the nation’s most powerful athletic programs on April 4, 2008. Alleva joined LSU after 10 years of outstanding leadership as the director of athletics at Duke University. He officially took over at LSU on July 1, 2008.

History LSU

Under Alleva’s guidance in 2008-09, LSU reached new heights in terms of athletic success while continuing to be recognized as one of the top enterprises in college athletics. The LSU Board of Supervisors approved a promotion on August 28, 2009, expanding his role to the academic side of the university. Alleva accepted the position of LSU Vice-Chancellor while still continuing his role as Director of Athletics. A veteran leader in college athletics, Alleva is dedicated to athletic and academic excellence. He is committed to providing the opportunities and the resources necessary for student-athletes to excel in competition, in the classroom and in the community. Alleva, 56, is well-respected for sustaining high standards of excellence and integrity in athletic programs, hiring the finest coaches in the country and the high level of success achieved by studentathletes. Under Alleva’s direction, all 20 LSU sports competed in NCAA post-season play for the first time in school history, and it culminated with the baseball team winning the national championship. In addition, six teams finished in the top 10 nationally. The Tigers hold claim to being the only school in the Southeastern Conference to participate in a bowl game and the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments during 2008-09. Furthermore, LSU student-athletes volunteered a total of 2,360 hours for community service projects. LSU earned a ninth place ranking in the 2009 Learfield Director’s Cup, which measures the overall athletic success for institutions across the country. LSU was second only to Florida in the Director’s Cup among SEC institutions as the Tigers accumulated points in 18 of a possible 20 categories in the standings, also a first for the school. Upon being hired at LSU, Alleva immediately made an impact by hiring Trent Johnson to lead the men’s basketball program. Johnson, the 2009 SEC Coach of the Year, wasted little time in turning the Tigers into a winner as LSU claimed the 2009 SEC regular season title and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. LSU also had top 10 national finishes in gymnastics, men’s and women’s indoor track and field and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Thirteen of LSU’s 20 sports finished the year ranked among the top 25 in the nation. The Tiger football team capped their season with a record ninth-straight bowl appearance as LSU closed out 2008 with a 38-3 win over 14th-ranked Georgia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. During the offseason, Alleva helped secure the funding necessary for the addition of a state-of-the-art artificial turf practice field, which compliments the surface the Tigers have in their indoor practice facility. The addition of the outdoor artificial

turf field gives the LSU football program one of the nation’s finest all-around facilities. Not only did LSU teams set records but so did the fans as over 1.5 million fans filled venues on the LSU campus. LSU set the school record for overall attendance in the sports of football, baseball, and softball. Alleva oversaw the grand opening of two of the premier baseball and softball facilities in college athletics, Alex Box Stadium and Tiger Park. LSU also broke ground on a basketball practice facility that will house both the men’s and women’s basketball teams starting in December of this year.

The new basketball practice facility will feature two full length courts as well as locker rooms and other amenities for both squads. In addition, LSU opened a new gift center for its fans – the LSU SportsShop. The LSU SportsShop, a spectacular, free-standing facility that features the latest in LSU apparel and merchandise, is located adjacent to Mike’s Habitat. Under Alleva’s guidance, LSU has one of the most lucrative apparel and shoe contracts with Nike while also having one of the nation’s most attractive multi-media rights contracts with CBS Collegiate Sports Properties. LSU athletic budget is now approaching $85 million, which allows the university to compete at the highest level in the nation. Alleva has a long-term vision for continued improvements to LSU’s athletic facilities in order to insure that the Tigers are among the best in the country well into the 21st Century. One of his top priorities is the enhancement of Tiger Stadium and making Tiger Stadium and the North Stadium Drive corridor a showplace for the university. Center and Tiger Stadium that would recognize LSU’s national championship teams and distinguished alumni. This special area, along with Mike’s Habitat, and the LSU SportsShop, would become the focal point for visitors to campus. Alleva is also pursuing a major renovation to the golf course at the University Club and is developing plans for a new gymnastics practice facility, indoor tennis center and improved soccer and track facilities. “Joe Alleva brings a wealth of experience and accomplishment to LSU,” LSU President John Lombardi said of hiring Alleva. “I’m confident we’ve found a new leader for LSU athletics who exemplifies the vision and integrity needed to lead our sports programs to new heights, a champion of student athletes who believes in the highest standards of competition both on the field and in the classroom.” Alleva’s impressive tenure as director of athletics at Duke propelled the university into the ranks of America’s top all-around collegiate programs. Among his outstanding list of accomplishments includes the greatest 10-year period in Duke athletics, winning more ACC and NCAA championships than in any other decade in school history. Also, his fundraising reached extensive heights providing new facilities or renovations for all 26 sports at Duke, which enhanced the experience for every student-athlete. Alleva is active on the national collegiate athletics scene, having served on the Football Bowl Certification Committee. He sat on several Atlantic Coast Conference committees and served on the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet. Alleva majored in Finance at Lehigh University and received his bachelor’s degree in 1975. While at Lehigh, Alleva was the quarterback of the football team and team captain in 1974. Alleva also played on the Lehigh baseball team. He served as a graduate assistant football coach and earned an MBA in 1976. Alleva began his 32-year career at Duke University in 1976. He spent 28 years in the athletic administration prior to becoming director of athletics in 1998. Alleva played a key role in Durham’s community sports scene. He started Little League Baseball in Durham over 20 years ago, and also began the American Legion baseball program Alleva is a member of the North Carolina American Legion Hall of Fame, Suffern High School Hall of Fame and the Rockland County Hall of Fame. Alleva and his wife, Annie, have three children, J.D., Jeff, and Jenny.
