PREVIEW The 2012-13 LSU women’s golf team is small in numbers this year, but all six players will all have the chance to contribute meaningful rounds that will be a key factor in the success of this year’s team.
outstanding post-season in which she finished solo fourth at the SEC Championships (+7, 223), tied for eighth in the NCAA West Regional (+1, 217) and three counting rounds in the 72-hole NCAA Championships (70-72-74).
The Lady Tigers will have new faces and will overall be younger than in some past years, but this is a team with credentials to continue in time the success of years past.
Sagstrom had two other top five finishes on the year, for a total of four, and 14 rounds of par or under.
But Coach Karen Bahnsen knows that the college golf season is a long and lengthy journey and Bahnsen and Assistant Alexis Rather will develop this LSU team so that it is reaching its peak when the spring season is beginning to point toward post-season play.
Also earning post-season honors for her first year of play a year ago is junior Lindsay Gahm of Louisville, Ky. Gahm played every round for LSU during the 2012-13 season, earning Louisiana Newcomer of the Year for first-year non-freshman players in the state. Gahm had a very solid year, averaging 76.2 per round. She provided lots of counting scores that helped LSU to four team wins a year ago and success through the post-season. This past summer, the transfer from Indiana was a wire-to-wire winner of the Kentucky Women’s Open at 5-under 141.
Returnees Madelene Sagstrom made the All-SEC Freshman team a year ago and the Swedish star showed many times that she is going to be a possible contender every time she tees it up. The Louisiana Freshman of the Year, played in every round a year ago for the Lady Tigers and averaged 73.6 for the season (third on the team and the leading returning scorer). She was also a part of the third-place team at the NCAA Championships and had an

LSU’s third returnee transferred last season from LSU after two years at San Francisco and she will be asked to step into a bigger role this year. Katrina Hegge will be the lone senior on the LSU team. The Seattle, Wash., native played in four tournaments a year ago with a 77.9 stroke average.

The Lady Tigers welcome a solid transfer and two freshmen for the 2012-13 season. With six on the roster, all three will probably have roles in the success of this year’s LSU team.
Coach Karen Bahnsen has always tried to have her team play a variety of teams on a variety of courses and this year is no exception. She feels this will prepare her team for what lies ahead at the end of the season.
Ali Lucas played her first two years at Louisiana-Monroe and took 2.5 strokes off her average from the freshman to sophomore years, from 78.48 to 75.90. Lucas had six career top 10 finishes for the Lady Warhawks, including a win at the Claud Jacobs Challenge at 9-over 224. This followed the previous tournament when she posted a second place finish.
Featured in the opening part of the schedule is the annual Fall Preview at a course LSU is very familiar with at the University of Georgia. After defending its title at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational, LSU closes out the fall at a first-time event for LSU to play in, the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio.
Lucas is a native of Crowley and multiple prep state championships at Notre Dame High School in Crowley. Also with multiple prep state honors is freshman Elise Bradley of Mandeville and Mandeville High School. A winner of three state championships, she (like Lucas) is a winner of the Louisiana Women’s Amateur title. She also has won three Louisiana Girls Junior Amateur championships as well in her decorated career. LSU’s third newcomer hails from Vienna, Austria, Nadine Dreher. Dreher has solid credentials as part of the Austrian National team. She also participated in the international field that gathered in Miami in 2011 for the Doral-Publix championship as part of the First Tee program. She also caddied for former LSU golfer Jacqueline Hedwall’s twin sister, Caroline, when she won her third Ladies European Tour event in Austria in 2011.
In the spring are some events that are time-tested and some events quickly becoming must-play events for teams, starting with a return to the Tulane Sugar Bowl Classic at the outstanding English Turn Golf Club in New Orleans. From there, it will be on to Hilton Head Island for the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. That event is put on by the University of South Carolina and the longtime superstar singer over a very difficult Long Cove Club. March brings the Lady Tigers back home to Baton Rouge to the University Club for the long-standing LSU Tiger Golf Classic. A strong field of 14 teams, including several past winners of the event will be on hand as LSU looks to win the event for the eighth time overall. An early April stop in Oxford, Miss., will close out the spring. The SECs will start post-season play in the first year of a new era in the championships that will see the event played on a neutral site in Birmingham at the prestigious Greystone Country Club. From there the Lady Tigers will go on to regional play and hopefully back to the NCAA Championships in Athens. For the Lady Tigers and Coach Bahnsen, it just means another year of following the path of a little white ball that hopefully stays more on fairways and greens.

individual NCAA champion and a team bringing home a big NCAA trophy during each of the last two years.
The LSU women’s golf team under Coach Karen Bahnsen recorded the best combined finishes in the NCAA championship over the last two years with backto-back third-place results.
The 2011-12 LSU team also showed its prowess during the regular season, winning four tournaments (including a tie for first in the NCAA Regional), making it one of the best seasons in program history and the Tigers advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 12th time, 11 times under Coach Bahnsen, including three of the last four years and 10 times in the last 17 years.
After a 2011 season that saw then freshman Austin Ernst sink the last putt on the 18th green on the final day of the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships that gave her the individual championship and the team its program best third place finish, 2012 would prove to be as good if not better. While Ernst would not repeat her individual title in 2012, senior Tessa Teachman was in the battle for the individual title until the end of the event, finishing third. The LSU team on the final day would play its best golf, shooting a 1-over 289 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club with the team posting a combined 9-under par on just the ninth and 18th holes. LSU posted its number first and watched as its 21-over par score would finish just two shots off the winning score as the Lady Tigers again put itself in the middle of women’s college golf’s national spotlight. The last two years has seen LSU accomplish more than any teams in the 33year history of the program that began in the 1979-80 season with a certain coach as its first recruit. In that time, the LSU women’s team has gone from a team that had to go to the LSU Bookstore to buy matching shirts to a team that had an

The Coach has had a lot to smile about since Buddy Alexander handed her the keys to the LSU women’s golf program prior to the 1984-85 season. The enthusiasm and competitive nature that Bahnsen showed then is the same enthusiasm and competitive nature that she exhibits today. The memories of the past two years are pleasant and easy to remember, but now she is ready to direct another golf adventure for the Lady Tigers. It’s one she hopes will take her team back to the NCAA Championship, but she knows it will be one filled with lessons learned that will make her team better at the end of the journey. She has had the drive, the determination and a willingness to succeed ever since she was playing at LSU in the early 1980s, joining the fledgling program as its first signee. One can also say that those who have succeeded in this program are those that possess the same drive, determination and willingness to do whatever is necessary that Bahnsen preaches.
COACHES Bahnsen knows what it takes to get to the pinnacle of women’s collegiate golf - the NCAA Women’s Championship Tournament. She will ask her team to work hard and respond to the challenge, but it will be nothing less than she ever asked of herself as a player. If the player accepts and understands, success usually follows. Now that message is being spread farther thanks to those who have worked and played for her. Two former assistants - Marci Kornegay (South Florida) and Golda Borst (Kentucky) are now head coaches. Ashley (Winn) Tonore, who played for Bahnsen in 1995-98, served for several years as the Director of Golf and head
women’s coach at ULM. Former player Alexis Rather has also joined the coaching fraternity in her fifth year as an assistant and her third at LSU. Over the years Bahnsen has come up with a simple philosophy that she started using as a player. It’s so simple, but so amazingly effective when put into play. She wants her team to play each shot as a separate event. If something bad happens, forget it and move on. Don’t let it carry on for four or five holes. Most of all, she wants her players to have fun. Bahnsen’s love and desire for a program she has devoted over half her life to is what also gives her a smiling satisfaction about a program she has virtually helped design from scratch. Plus, all these years of coaching have done nothing to slow her down. In fact, she is more energized than ever to make the program a continuing contender in the national spotlight. How many programs are there in any sport in Division I intercollegiate athletics where the program’s first recruit goes on to become the head coach of the program and stays long enough to not only be the dean of league coaches in the sport, but also one of the longest tenured coaches in school history? But she’s not just going through the motions. A season with an individual national champion and back-to-back third place team finishes tell you that. She is one of the most respected individuals in the game today, not just in the SEC

but in all college golf circles. That is why she was inducted in December 2008 into the National Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in December 2008. She has also done a fabulous job of changing as women’s golf changed. Since her arrival at LSU in 1979, the sport of women’s golf has risen in talent and stature to the point that SEC championships and national championships are decided by mere strokes instead of one or two teams dominating a field. Bahnsen has contributed her share of names to the list of SEC stars in her years as head coach. There was the nation’s No. 1 player, Jenny Lidback, in the
mid-1980s, who led LSU to the NCAA Championship Tournament and then went on to become a major tournament winner on the LPGA Tour. Also, from the 1980s, came Jackie Gallagher, a steady player who had a long and successful career on the women’s tour. The “Three Amigas” signaled a new era in LSU women’s golf in the mid-1990s when the highly recruited Ashley Winn, Michelle Louviere and Laura Moore led LSU to a succession of NCAA appearances (including a fifth place finish in 1998), a No. 1 ranking and nine tournament titles. Katy Wilkinson-Harris ended the 1990s with bookend All-American performances in her freshman and senior years. The 2000s opened with Shreveport’s Meredith Duncan bringing LSU national recognition by winning the U.S. Women’s Amateur title and helping her country keep the Curtis Cup in matches with Great Britain and Ireland. Megan McChrystal earned All-American honors for three straight years while setting all the LSU records for single season and career stroke average. The Stuart, Fla., native punched out five victories, putting her third all-time in single season titles. LSU’s first national championship came from freshman Austin Ernst, who shot a pair of six-under 66s and had a hole-in-one to capture the NCAA Championship in 2011 and she helped the Lady Tigers to the back-to-back third place finishes. She also advanced to the 2011 semifinals of the USGA Women’s Amateur, and the 2012 North-South championship.
Bahnsen knows what the girls are going through with each shot they take and she feels their excitement and disappointments. She is there to congratulate, offer a tip when necessary and provide the consoling hands of sympathy when things don’t go the right way. It’s that style which has earned her the respect of her peers throughout the league and country.

Baton Rouge senior Tessa Teachman had her best season in 2012, shooting 1-under for 72 holes to finish third in the championships as she helped push the Lady Tigers to another third place finish. Lindsay Gahm and Madelen Sagstrom will also be back in 2012-13 after playing in every event in their first year at LSU. They will join a strong recruiting class that Coaches Bahnsen and Rather have brought in to accept the challenge to get back again to the Championships. Simply put, the LSU women’s golf program remains and continues to grow in national status each and every year, facing the best in tournaments throughout the country in preparation to be ready for post-season play. Bahnsen takes the LSU program to the 2012-13 season with the same dogged determination she has shown throughout her days as a player and during her years as head coach. The numbers show her success: 21 All-Americans, 44 AllSEC, 39 tournament titles, 37 individual titles, 11 top three finishes in the SEC championships, 18 appearances in the NCAA regionals, 11 appearances in the NCAA Division I Championship and seven top-10 finishes in those 11 events. She has coached two winners of the prestigious LPGA Diana Shore Award (Lisette Lee in 2000 and Meredith Duncan in 2002) and the 1986 College Player of the Year (Jenny Lidback). But let’s talk off the course as well. There have been 84 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections, 27 National Golf Coaches Association Academic Scholars, and for many years, the women’s golf team has had one of the highest GPAs for an athletic team at the school.

Every year has brought new challenges and every time Bahnsen has answered that call. Every year, the desire to succeed is that much greater and that is what seems to continue to light the fire of the lady who knows LSU golf inside and outside, backwards and forwards. Bahnsen’s teams learn a lot about golf during their LSU days, but they also learn a lot about the ups and downs of sports. She doesn’t just go through the motions of being a coach. Bahnsen knows what the girls are going through with each shot they take and she feels their excitement and disappointments. She is there to congratulate, offer a tip when necessary and provide the consoling hands of sympathy when things don’t go the right way. It’s that style which has earned her the respect of her peers throughout the league and country. Bahnsen came to LSU with credentials that were excellent, lettering in golf at McGill-Toolen High School in Mobile, Ala. She led the school to two state titles and in 1979 won the state individual championship and the National High School Tournament. Her mother was an LPGA teaching professional, a four-time Alabama state women’s champion, and a Mobile Sports Hall of Fame inductee. Bahnsen is married to LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director David “Bo” Bahnsen. They have two children, son, Darren, 24 (an LSU graduate, a former member of state championship basketball and golf teams at University High in Baton Rouge and a graduate assistant for the LSU men’s basketball team) and daughter, Devin, 22.

They haven’t gotten to the point where they are completing each other’s sentences, but the teaming up of Head Coach Karen Bahnsen and former player now Assistant Coach Alexis Rather has brought LSU women’s golf to another level.
Over the course of her career, Rather played in all but three tournaments during her four years. She posted three top 10s and six top 20 performances and her 128 career rounds played is tied for fourth most rounds played by an LSU women’s golfer.
The pair has put helped put together back-to-back third place team finishes in the NCAA Golf Championships, the best in the 30-plus years of women’s golf at LSU.
She averaged 76.84 strokes through her four-year career. She was also a four-time member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
See one on the court and the other one is close by. They both know the advice to give and the proper times to give it. They know when to press and when to back off. It’s a coaching staff in sync in recruiting talent and then developing it to be the best it can be.
At Ole Miss, she showed the type of coach she would be, helping guide the Rebels back to postseason play and win a tournament for the first time since 2004 as the women’s golf team earned the Chancellor’s Cup for the women’s varsity team at Ole Miss with the highest grade point average.
Now it’s not like Rather suddenly gained all the knowledge of LSU women’s golf overnight. She is an LSU program veteran and, like her mentor, she knows the history of the team and what is necessary to get teams through delicate moments in important rounds because she has lived it.
Since returning to LSU, she has helped the program at practice, in tournaments and on the road, giving LSU another important voice on the road when it comes to recruiting. During tournaments, Rather can be seen at various spots on the course, offering help and encouragement to the Lady Tigers at other times when needed.
The former LSU golfer is back for her third season as assistant coach for the LSU program following a two-year stint as assistant coach at Ole Miss.
Rather was named LSU’s recipient on the SEC Community Service Team while in college and heavily involved her entire LSU career with Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills service projects throughout the community. She graduated from LSU in July 2007 with an honors degree in Communications and her master’s in Sports Management from LSU in 2008.
The native of Tupelo, Miss., was a four-year letter winner at LSU, appeared in two NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships as a player and was a four-time National Golf Coaches Association scholar-athlete. Rather, a two-time First-Team AllLouisiana golfer, had three top 10 finishes in her 2008 senior season. That year, she also chipped in for the only birdie in sudden death in a playoff for the final qualifying spot at the NCAA East Regional that got LSU to the NCAA Women’s National Championships.
“It is wonderful having Alexis here at LSU as my assistant,” said Coach Bahnsen. “She is part of our LSU family. As a former player, she has brought a lot to our team and in the assistant coach position has played a big role in our success the last two years. It is great to have her to work with and I believe we make a great team.” The results prove that right.
LSU finished in 15th place in the NCAA Championships that season.

Earl Chevalier has worked in the LSU weight room since the spring of 2001, starting first as an intern under Strength and Conditioning Coach Tommy Moffitt, before being promoted to full-time assistant coach in the department following his graduation. The New Orleans native graduated from LSU in May of 2004 with a degree in Kinesiology. As an intern, Chevalier worked with the LSU football program during their national title year in 2003 and assisted with the men’s and women’s basketball teams. He is currently the head strength coach for the nationally-ranked women’s gymnastics and golf teams.
Pam Workman
Softball/Women’s Golf Trainer Pam Workman, who earned her bacherlor’s degree at LSU in 2005, returns to LSU in the fall of 2012 as a full-time member of the LSU Athletic Training staff and among her duties will be working with the school’s nationally-ranked women’s golf team. Workman came to LSU from the University of Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss., where she was the Associate Athletic Trainer in charge of athletic training in baseball, women’s golf and volleyball. She also served as the primary insurance coordinator for all Southern Mississippi student-athletes. Workman went to Southern Miss after graduating with her degree in kinesiology in 2005 where she earned her maters in sports management in 2007 where she served as a graduate assistant in the athletic training operations before being hired full-time after graduation. Before coming to LSU, Workman began her college work at LSUEunice where she was a two-year member of the LSU-Eunice women’s basketball team. While at LSU she was awarded the Adam Sturlese Memorial Award for top student athletic trainer and the Tiger Cub Merit Scholarship for top athletic training observation student. Workman is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the Southeast Athletic Trainers’ Association. She also has cerification from the American Red Cross as Cardiopulmonary Resucitation and Professional Rescuer and American Red Cross Auomated External Defibrillator Certification.

A member of the LSU Sports Information staff since August 1988, Kent Lowe was appointed senior associate SID in August 2000. He serves as the primary media contact for the LSU men’s basketball team and women’s golf team. He has teamed with Graphic Design Coordinator Krystal Bennett the last several years to edit four times one of the top five best women’s golf media guides in the country as determined by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), including a third for the 2010 guide. His 2010 men’s basketball guide was voted “Best in the Nation.” His voice is also well known as the color analyst on softball broadcasts on the LSU Sports Radio Network and for the past 20 years has written a bowling column for The (Baton Rouge) Advocate that was honored in 2009 with a national award from the Bowling Proprietors Association of Amerca. Lowe, 54, came to LSU from Louisiana Downs where he served as publicity director for the Bossier City, La., racetrack. Lowe is a member of CoSIDA and its prestigious Academic AllAmerican committee and is a past president and now treasurer of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Lowe, a native of Shreveport, is a 1979 graduate of LSU-Shreveport. He earned his master’s degree at LSU in 1982.
Matt Dahlke
Academic Advisor Academic Center for Athletes Matt Dahlke is currently in his second year as a member of the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes team. He is the advisor for LSU’s men’s and women’s golf program, the men’s and women’s tennis programs as well as the men’s and women’s cross country teams. Dahlke will also coordinate all awards for all LSU student-athletes. Prior to LSU, Dahlke held a position at the University of Missouri as a graduate assistant with Academic Services. There he worked with the football, soccer and gymnastics programs as well as the Enhanced Learning Program. Dahlke received his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Missouri in May of 2009 and also earned his Master’s degree in Education (Health Education and Promotion) at the University of Missouri in the Spring of 2011.

REVIEW How do you compare the 2011 LSU women’s golf season to 2012‘s just completed season? It would have to be argued that you don’t compare, you congratulate what were arguably two of the greatest teams in the 30-plus years of women’s golf at LSU. A second consecutive third place finish right on the cusp of a national title and four team wins made 2012 an outstanding season for Coach Karen Bahnsen and her Lady Tigers and the success of the season, like 2011, started early.
The Start The Lady Tigers won two of their first three tournaments and it took some record numbers to get it done. In the opener at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, LSU set a single round record to rally to win the team title and sophomore Austin Ernst came from a shot down to win the individual title, posting her own record score. Senior Tessa Teachman would tie for third. The fourth-ranked Lady Tigers would post an 11-under par score of 277 in the final round, topping by one shot the school record. LSU finished with the second lowest aggregate score in school history, a 16-under 848. Ernst shot a 67 in the final round to shoot a winning school record total of 13-under par 203. Two tournaments later at the Tar Heel Invitational, No. 3-ranked LSU was again rallying to win in the final round for its second win of the year. LSU was able to win
after entering the final round tied with Alabama after the first 36 holes. The Lady Tigers had seven birdies and an eagle down the stretch as LSU finished at 8-under 856 for the tournament and a four-shot win. Freshman Madelene Sagstrom posted 7-under 209 to finish in a tie for fifth.
Another Win In Spring The 7th-ranked Lady Tigers rallied from a stroke down to record the third team victory of the year in the opening event of the spring, winning the Lady Puerto Rico Classic by two shots over Georgia. Georgia was one shot ahead entering the final round, but LSU finished at 20-over par 884 with Georgia two shots back at 886. Both Ernst (5th) and Teachman (9th) finished in the top 10. LSU came close to getting its fourth win at its home event, the LSU Tiger Golf Classic, in March, finishing second to Tennessee by two shots after the two teams entered the final round tied. Tennessee shot 16-over 880 and LSU 18-over 882. Sagstrom posted even par 216 to finish solo third and Ernst at 2-over 218 was fourth.

The Post-Season LSU punched its ticket to the national championship tournament with its best ever finish in an NCAA Regional golf tournament when they tied for first with UCLA in the final round of the West Regional at hot and cold Erie, Colo. Round one was played in temperatures in the mid-80s with temperatures in the mid-40s for the final two days. For LSU it was its fourth win of the season, marking the second best season for wins in the history of the program. Only the 1986 team with five wins had more championships than the 2011-12 team. It also qualified LSU for its 12th Championship and third in the last four years. LSU finished at 9-over par 873 with consistent rounds of 291, 290 and 292. In the national championships, senior Teachman did everything she could to put the team on her shoulders and not only help the Lady Tigers in her final event, but give herself a chance at a national individual title. After three rounds at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., birdies on the 17th and 18th holes left the Baton Rouge native at 3-under 213 after 54 holes, just one shot out of the lead. Meanwhile, the LSU team, found itself being windblown around the course on the front nine of the third round and in danger of falling out of the top 10. But six birdies in the final three holes and a 30-foot par save by Lindsay Gahm put LSU suddenly back
to sixth place, just seven shots out of the lead at 20-over 884. Bahnsen noted all year long that the Lady Tigers “were such fighters” and LSU showed it by playing the last 21 holes in 5-under par, including taking advantage of the par 5 ninth and 18th holes. All five players birdied the ninth and LSU got three birdies and an eagle on the 18th hole, finishing the 72 holes at 21-over. LSU finished third for a second straight year, finishing just two shots behind winner Alabama with definitely the best cumulative back-to-back finishes of any team in the last two championships. Teachman would shoot a 1-under 287 and finish with a tie for third in the championships, equaling the second best finish for an LSU golfer in tournament history.
Post-Season Honors Ernst and Teachman earned All-SEC second team honors while Sagstrom was named to the All-SEC freshman team. After the championships, the NGCA named both Ernst and Teachman honorable mention All-Americans and Teachman earned her fourth scholar-athlete citation, becoming just the second LSU golfer, joining her assistant coach Alexis Rather, to earn four scholar-athlete awards. 2011 or 2012. Was one better than the other? As far as LSU women’s golf is concerned, both were great.

SEASON TOURNAMENTS Cougar Challenge Charleston, S.C. -- Sept. 11-13, 2011 Yeaman Hall Course -- Par 72 The Lady Tigers started the 2011-12 season with a flourish, setting a single round record to rally to win the team title and sophomore Austin Ernst came from a shot down to win the individual title as well. The win was the 33rd and the first of four on the year for Coach Karen Bahnsen and the third career win for Ernst. LSU finished at 32-over 896 (303-300-293), good enough for 11th in the 18-team event, won by defending NCAA Champion UCLA. LSU’s final round was paced by two under par rounds with freshman Madelene Sagstrom posting a 2-under par 70 and sophomore Austin Ernst scoring a 1-under 71. Tar Heel Invitational Chapel Hill, N.C. -- October 7-9, 2011 UNC Finley Golf Course -- Par 72 The No. 3-ranked LSU women’s golf team gave long-time head coach Karen Bahnsen a nice early birthday present, rallying on the back nine to win the Lady Tar Heel Invitational. LSU got some putts to drop in what Bahnsen, whose birthday was two days after the tournament, called “quite a battle” down the stretch as LSU turned the tables to win by four shots over No. 4 Alabama after the teams started the round tied at 7-under par through the first 36 holes. The win was the second in three tournaments for the Lady Tigers this fall. The winning charge came suddenly as LSU got seven birdies on the final nine holes, including an eagle from Lindsay Gahm to help claim the win. LSU was 1-under for the final round and 8-under for the tournament with a threeday total of 856 (284-285-287). Madelene Sagstrom led LSU on the final day with a 1-under 71 to finish at 7-under 209, tying for fifth.

SEC-Pac 12 Challenge Palo Alto, Calif. -- November 5-7, 2010 Stanford Univeristy Golf Club -- Par 72 For the second straight year, LSU had a bit of opening round trouble in this matchup of SEC and Pac-12 teams. The Lady Tigers did put together rounds in the 290s in the final two trips around the Holston Hills Country Club to finish the day at 36-over par 900 (307-295-298) and in a tie for 15th place. SPRING SEASON Lady Puerto Rico Classic Rio Grande, Puerto Rico -- Feb. 12-14, 2012 Rio Mar Country Club River Course -- Par 72 LSU rallied from a stroke back entering the final round to record its third team victory of the 2011-12 golf season, capturing the title of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic over Georgia. The win marked the fourth time in LSU women’s golf history that the team has had at least three team victories during the course of a year. LSU posted a 10-over round of 298, three shots better than Georgia, which had been tied with LSU after the first round and then one shot ahead entering the final 18 holes. Austin Ernst recorded her second top five of the season, finishing at even par 216 and taking solo fifth place (71-72-73). Teachman finished at 2-under 214 (69-75-70), two shots behind wire-to-wire winner Chirpat Jao-Javanil of Oklahoma. It was Teachman’s second top three of the year. The seventh-ranked LSU team was in the mix in a four-way battle for the team title, eventually finishing fourth three shots out of the championship won by TCU. Top Teams 1. The Lady Tigers posted their best ever finish in an NCAA regional golf tournament when they tied for first with UCLA in the final round of the West Regional at the Colorado National Golf Club. It was LSU’s fourth win of the season, marking the second best season for wins in the history of the program. Only the 1986 team, with five wins, had more championships. NCAA Women’s Championship Franklin, Tenn. -- May 22-25, 2012 Vanderbilt Legends Club -- Par 72 Coach Karen Bahnsen’s team was about to fall out of the top 10 in a windy third round at the national championships but finished with six birdies over the final three holes and in fifth place. By the end of Friday’s final round, the Lady Tigers would have a third-place finish for the second straight year, just two shots out of the victory posted by Alabama. LSU would play the last 21 holes of the tournament in 5-under par and posted a 21-over 1,173 (293-294-297-289).It was the lowest 72-hole score ever for LSU at the championships. Tessa Teachman, in her final collegiate tournament, tied for third at 1-under 287 (69-74-70-74). The Baton Rouge native became the fourth LSU golfer to finish in the top three in the history of the national championships. The Alabama Sports Foundation, in conjunction with the Southeastern Conference announced this past Auguest that Greystone Golf & Country Club in Hoover, Ala., will be host to the 2013 through 2016 SEC Women’s Golf Championship. “We are proud to host the SEC Women’s Golf Championship,” stated Calvin Bolling, General Manager of Greystone Golf & Country Club. “Greystone’s rich tradition in golf includes hosting 15 Champions Tour events, as well as annually hosting for the past 20 years one of the top 20 amateur tournaments in the country, The Greystone Invitational. Our goal is to provide a formidable challenge to the best collegiate women in the country, while sharing a taste of our southern hospitality. We invite golf fans from the SEC region to Greystone to enjoy the spirit of competition and camaraderie, while viewing a showcase of the SEC Women’s Golf Championship. We are excited to share in the history of this prestigious event.” The championship will consist of 14 teams competing in three rounds of tournament play. This will be only the second time that the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area has hosted the SEC Women’s Golf Championship since it began in 1981. “The Alabama Sports Foundation is proud to host another SEC Championship in Hoover,” stated Gene Hallman, Executive Director of the Alabama Sports Foundation. “We value our outstanding partnership with the conference and are pleased to have this opportunity. very familiar with the quality of SEC Women’s golf given our background in managing numerous women’s professional golf tournaments. The number of SEC Women alumnae playing at the elite professional level is truly amazing. Additionally, Greystone Golf & Country Club is an outstanding facility and will be a tremendous host.” The SEC has a strong history in women’s collegiate golf, with four NCAA National Championships. SEC teams have finished in the top ten every year except two since 1983 and have had six NCAA Individual Champions. The University of Georgia still holds the record of total SEC Championships won with eleven, but the Auburn Tigers follow close behind with nine wins, including both 2011 and 2012. “We are excited about our women’s golf championship coming to Greystone Golf & Country Club, while also expanding our relationship with the City of Hoover with another quality SEC event,” Commissioner Mike Slive said. “Hoover’s dedication to the conference, along with the expertise the Alabama Sports Foundation has in running high-level golf events, will certainly give SEC teams and fans a great postseason experience.” The Alabama Sports Foundation (ASF) serves as the official sports lobby for the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area, as well as the State of Alabama. The Foundation’s mission is to recruit, manage and promote major spectator sporting events throughout Alabama.

CHAMPIONSHIPS The Southeastern Conference has continuted to show its leadership in the intergration of athletic competition and higher education. Since its formation in 1933, the SEC has achieved both stature and stability by designating governing/voting power to the presidents of the member institutions. They have determined the policies of the conference and through the years this involvement has been the principal source of strength in the evolution of the SEC. Intercollegiate athletics encountered many challenges in the 1990s and the SEC provided guidance. In 1993, the member institutions adopted The Principles of Gender Equity. Committed to increasing the quantity and quality of women’s athletic opportunities, each school provides at least two more women’s intercollegiate programs than the number of men’s. SEC schools began athletic competition over 100 years ago as members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The 13 members west and south of the
Appalachian Mountains reorganized as the Southeastern Conference at the annual Southern Conference meeting in 1932. Charter members of the new conference were Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU , Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Sewanee, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. In the 1979-80 academic year, SEC championships for women were recognized in basketball, tennis and volleyball. The following year golf, gymnastics, swimming and track and field were added. The administration of women’s athletics officially came under the auspices of the conference office in 1984. Arkansas and South Carolina joined the league in 1992 and in 2012-13 the league expanded to 14 teams with the addition of new members Texas A&M and Missouri. The SEC currently regulates nine men’s sports and 11 women’s sports. The women’s sports are volleyball, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track (cross country, indoor, outdoor) and volleyball.

CHAMPIONSHIPS To tell the story of LSU’s 2012 NCAA Championship run, let’s back the season up a couple of weeks to the NCAA Regional round in Erie, Colo. LSU set the tone early and it was obvious nothing about hanging on to eighth place had to be discussed. In the cold and wind of Erie, Colo., LSU was determined to win a regional title for the first time. Although they had to share it with UCLA, this was a title LSU was proud of in so many ways. The Lady Tigers 54-hole score of 9-over 873 gave seventh-ranked LSU its fourth tournament title of the year, the second most season titles for the team in the 30-plus year history of the program. So for Austin Ernst, Lindsay Gahm Jacqueline Hedwall, Madelene Sagstrom and Tessa Teachman it was on to the Championships at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. Ernst, Hedwall and Teachman helped the Lady Tigers to their best finish of third as the team coached by Karen Bahnsen and Alexis Rather finished just eight shots out of the 2011 title. Austin Ernst had won the individual title as a freshman in 2011. Could the Lady Tigers prove that the magic and ability was still there one more year? Yes they could. After having up and down moments through the first 45 holes, the Lady Tigers began to assert themselves into the competition on the back nine of the third round. LSU finished with six birdies in the final three holes and a 30-foot par save by Gahm on the 18th hole. That got LSU back to 20-over after 54 holes, just seven shots out of Alabama’s lead.
Meanwhile, Teachman had taken the LSU team on her back and while helping LSU to a good team position, her 54-hole total of 3-under 213 put her one shot out of the individual lead. In the final round, LSU used the par-5 ninth and par-5 18th holes to its ultimate benefit posting 4-under on the ninth and 5-under 18th (3 birdies and an eagle) to post its best round of the tournament on the a1-under 289 to finish at 21-over 1,173 (293294-297-289). LSU would finish just two shots out of the first place score of Alabama, equaling the Lady Tigers best finish with a second straight third place trophy. Teachman, from Baton Rouge, concluded her collegiate career with a 72-hole total of 1-under 287 (69-74-70-74). Teachman was one of just four golfers to finish 72 holes under par and in a tie for third place. She became the fourth LSU golfer to finish in the top three in the history of the NCAA Championships joining Austin Ernst, the 2011 champion; and Katy Harris in 2001 and Kristi Coats in 1991 who both finished third. Ernst ended her reign as champion with a 4-under 68 and her 7-over 295 finished in a tie for 29th. LSU returned home with back-to-back third-place trophies marking the best combined two-year finish of any team in the 2011 and 2012 national championship events.

LSU CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY The regional rounds for the 2013 Championships will again be conducted over three different golf courses -East: Auburn University Golf Course, Auburn, Ala.; Central: The Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course, Norman, Okla.; West: Stanford University Course, Stanford, Calif. The regionals are from May 9-11. A total of 24 teams and six individuals are seeded into each regional. The eight lowest scoring teams, as well as the two lowest individuals not on those eight qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Women’s Championships at The University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga., May 21-24.
Katy Harris, Meredith Duncan and now Megan McChrystal are the three LSU players who played in the championships all four years of their careers. Harris made it on four teams from 1998 to 2001, while Duncan qualified on three teams and once individually from 1999-2002. McChrystal’s four years (2008-11) included three team appearances, including assisting in the 2011 team’s first of back-to-back third place finishes. Teachman and Hedwall joined the group of LSU players who participated in three NCAA Championships (2009, 2011, 2012). Kristi Coats (1990, 1991, 1992), Caroline Martens (2006, 2008, 2009) and Amalie Valle (2008, 2009, 2011) are the three other golfers with three NCAA Championships appearances.
LSU made its first of 12 NCAA championship appearances in the first NCAA event in 1982 in Palo Alto, Calif., when LSU finished 16th.
Since 1993, to get to the NCAA Division I Championships, teams and individuals must go through the NCAA Regional Tournaments. LSU has hosted the regional on three occasions (1993, 2002, 2007).
The Lady Tigers would return in 1986 when LSU, led by Player of the Year Jenny Lidback, helped the Tigers to a ninth-place finish. Lidback finished tied for 17th.
LSU has advanced to the regional round of NCAA post-season play since that first tournament in 1993 every year but 1994 and 2003.
The Lady Tigers made their longest championship run starting in 1986, when the Three Amigas (Ashley Winn, Laura Moore and Michelle Louviere) took the Lady Tigers to top 10-finishes in 1996 (8th) and 1998 (5th). Louviere finished tied for 19th in 1986 and Ashley Winn tied for 15th.
Regionals are make or break tournaments that reward the best teams playing the best over those 54 holes. In 2009, LSU used a chip-in birdie by Alexis Rather on the first hole of sudden death to go to the Championships, but in 2010, one shot meant the difference between eighth and ninth place as LSU missed a chance to go back again.
The Tigers posted 10th-place finishes in 1999 and 2000 and a 12th place finish in 2001 on teams led by Katy Harris and Meredith Duncan. Duncan played the last 54 holes in 2-under par after opening with a 10-over 82 to finish in a tie for seventh place in 2000 and Harris shot a 1-under 287 to finish in a tie for third in LSU’s appearance in 2001.

For well over a decade now, the LSU men’s and women’s golf teams have called the University Club home. After undergoing a nine-month renovation in 2009-10, the home of LSU’s nationallyranked programs features a renown par-72 layout that serves as an impressive showpiece for generations to come. The course at the University Club was re-designed under the guidance of LSU legend and PGA Tour pro David Toms and noted golf course architect Jim Lipe, who designed the original University Club in 1998. The course is carved into nearly 300 acres of land just seven miles south of the LSU campus on Nicholson Drive. It comes as no surprise that the University Club has been selected as an NCAA Men’s Golf Regional host site for the 2013 season, marking the first time in the illustrious history of the LSU men’s golf program that the Tigers will serve as hosts to an NCAA postseason tournament on its home course. The challenging 18-hole course at University Club can play to 7,700 yards from its championship tees and feature wide fairways bordered by pine hammocks and native grasses, in addition to 2,000 feet of beautiful bulkhead. Four additional sets of tees are also available for players of all ages and skill levels. In addition, the lake areas have been increased by 110,000 cubic yards in total and more than 500 trees were added throughout the course to provide a challenging test of golf for anyone playing the University Club. Not only that, but the course now has one of the most impressive finishing holes in golf as the 18th hole features a new championship “Tiger” tee with a beautiful six-foot high wood bulkhead. The lake was expanded near the green, where an additional 180 feet of bulkhead was also added. In the summer of 2011, the members of the University Club voted the 18th hole as the course’s “Signature Hole.” The course was built on land donated to the Tiger Athletic Foundation and subsequently leased to The University Club. The original vision that drove University Club’s development was having a premier course that would provide a place for TAF members to play, as well as a home for the men’s and women’s golf teams at LSU.

The course opened for members on Oct. 22, 1998. The swimming and tennis facility adjacent to the course opened in the summer of 2000. The surrounding housing development continues to grow, adding to the beauty of the area surrounding the golf course. The Tiger Athletic Foundation is a private, non-profit corporation that serves as the fund-raising and development arm of the LSU athletics department. Each year, the TAF underwrites scholarship and academics awards, as well as capital development projects for LSU athletics.

HOLE-BY-HOLE In its original state, through the summer of 2009, the U-Club played at just over 7,200 yards from its Tiger Tees and just over 6,000 yards for the early LSU Women’s Golf Classics. Now the course measures out at a hefty 7,700 yards from the Tiger Tees and an impressive 6,602 yards from member tees. Here are some characteristics of the course and pictures of the holes (tees are listed in the following order: Tiger-Scratch-Member-Senior-Ladies/Jrs.)

Can you say long? The No.1 handicap hole on the course had 53 yards added to its Tiger distance and features native grass areas down both sides of a fairway that was much easier to hit. The water has been expanded off the tee, replacing the old fairway bunker. The elevated green makes a more demanding approach.
A championship tee lengthened the hole some 50 yards. The former waste bunker on the left side was replaced by an area of pine hammock and several trees planted in the right rough. On the approach shot, players have to watch for a grass hollow that replaced greenside bunkers.

A good hole that didn’t need a lot of change. Two bunkers tempt those looking to carry a drive and the raised left side of the green creates a top shelf pin placement.

No. 4 – Par 4 – 375-341-315-288-231 This was a short par 4 that some long hitters could put the ball at the edge of the green with an accurate drive. That task is a little tougher as the left side water now extends into the fairway. The green has been extended back for an addition hole location.
No. 5 – Par 3 – 189-172-155-137-96 This picturesque par 3 loses the wide bail-out area on the right as you look from the tee. The lake extends closer to the green making accuracy everything from the tee box.
No. 6 – Par 5 – 573-554-522-478-450 This hole has a whole new identity with a new lake down the entire length of the hole. A creek also crosses the fairway, directly in the landing zone of most hitters. The creek extends into a pond at the green making the approach shot more demanding.

No. 8 – Par 3 – 222-188-166-130-107 The long par-3 eighth has undergone a complete renovation. The tee box has been reshaped and elevated some seven feet. The water on the hole has expanded to the front left of the green. The putting surface has been reshaped with three new bunkers.
No. 9 – par 4 – 486-467-443-394-345 The second longest par 4 on the course has several trees down the right side. Waste bunkers have been replaced by pine hammock areas and native grass comes into play on the left side. The result is a tighter landing area to try to place a drive.

No. 11 – Par 5 – 567-557-516-484-429 This long par 5 has native dunes on the left side. A fairway bunker in the middle of the fairway that is 110 yards out from the green will cause approach problems. The water down the right has been expended close to the newlyelevated green, placing a premium on getting the ball to the hole.
No. 12 – Par 4 – 422-410-368-350-307 Several trees will cause problem with errant drives on both sides of the hole. A new sand bunker has replaced a grass bunker in front of the green. An accurate tee shot is a must.

No. 13 – Par 3 – 209-179-151-141-119 This has always been one of the best holes on the course. Some trees have been added and the green expanded to add hole locations. A straightforward tee shot is necessary with severe bunkers on the left side of the green.
No. 14 – Par 4 – 460-448-404-351-317 One of the more intimidating holes on the course with an uncompromising dogleg left leaving little room for error off the tee. Water has been extended into the fairway on the left side and pine hammocks down the right. The green has been expanded to the back and to the right.
No. 15 – Par 4 – 365-347-327-287-244 This hole probably had some of the biggest changes on the golf course. There is a new elevated tee box and the right side of the hole features mounding with native grasses. The fairway has been reshaped and bunkers added on the left. The hole has the potential to be played as a drivable par 4.

THE UNIVERSITY CLUB No. 16 – Par 3 – 253-215-167-144-117 This hole now could play 250 yards over water from the Tiger tee as opposed to the old distance of 188 yards. The existing green has been expanded to the right to allow more hole locations. Water has been added to the right of the green.
No. 17 – Par 5 – 551-528-501-452-443 The hole has several trees down the right side of the entire hole. The water on the left expands toward the fairway approaching the hole. A lake at the green makes an accurate approach imperative. Long hitters can reach the green in two.
No. 18 – Par 4 – 497-458-389-372-340 The U-Club’s signature hole is one of the best finishing holes in the state. Native grasses are both right and left on this dogleg left hole. The lake which has always been in play off the tee has been expanded near the green, replacing the left greenside bunker. There is 180 feet of bulkhead bordering the left side of the green.

GOLF CLASSIC THE HISTORY This year’s LSU Golf Classic will mark the 32nd consecutive spring that the LSU women’s golf team has hosted a tournament that has grown to be one of the most prestigious events of the women’s golf schedule. The Classic moved to the LSU University Club in 2000 and been played there every year except 2010 when U-Club renovations moved the event to English Turn in New Orleans, where the Lady Tigers hosted the event with Tulane. But the tournament roots go back to the local Fairwood Country Club and its unique membership that not only hosted and ran the tournament, but served as uncles and aunts for many of the teams that came each year. Club members hosted teams at their houses every year, allowing teams to save money in the days when women’s college golf wasn’t funded as it is today. Dinners were provided by the club along with member entertainment and some of the nation’s top golf teams and players came to participate. Jenny Lidback, who would go on to win a major championship on the LPGA tour, lost the tournament title in a playoff while at TCU and in 1986 would win the title as an LSU Lady Tiger. Arizona’s Marisa Baena had her coming out party as a freshman dominating the competition. In the final LSU-Fairwood event in 1999, Duke put on the course a lineup that would become one of the most dominating in the nation. Dan Brooks brought his Duke team back to Baton Rouge to win the 2007 renewal on the way to winning the East Regional at the U-Club, leading to a third straight NCAA Championship. LSU’s annual golf tournament has not only proven to be an important event on the women’s collegiate circuit, but it has proven to be a community event as seen by the hundreds of volunteers who take part each year. It’s those volunteers that the LSU golf program salutes for their tireless efforts that make the LSU event the success it is. Also thanks to the University Club for being a special home for LSU Golf and to the TAF for their work to continue to make the U-Club a strong test of golf.
THE RITE OF SPRING AT LSU’S U-CLUB The rite of spring known as the LSU Golf Classic returns to the redesigned University Club, March 22-24, 2013. The Lady Tigers and the tournament returned in 2011 to their home University Club after a year away to allow a complete renovation of the course. This will mark the 32nd year the Lady Tigers have hosted a tournament, the 31st in Baton Rouge. LSU has played the tournament (with the exception of 2010) at the U-Club every year since 2000 as well as hosting two NCAA regionals and an SEC Championship in that time. This year’s LSU Golf Classic has drawn another strong field of 14 teams as the Lady Tigers will host: Arkansas, Georgia, Florida State, Kentucky, LouisianaMonroe, Ole Miss, Missouri, North Carolina State, North Carolina Wilmington, TCU, Tennessee, Tulane and Wake Forest.
Arkansas (2011), Florida State (1987, 1988, 1989, 2008), TCU (1982, 1983) and UNCW (2003) are previous winners of LSU women’s golf events. LSU has won its tournament seven times (1985, ‘86, ‘95, ‘98, 2000, ‘01, 05)

TRAINING LSU boasts the largest and most complete athletic training facilities in all of collegiate athletics with both the Operations Center and the Broussard Center for Athletic Training in Tiger Stadium. Both are furnished with the latest in technology and equipment. The Operations Center training room features a full view of the practice fields, two hot/cold jacuzzis and an underwater treadmill. The Broussard Center includes an on-site x-ray room, an in-house pharmacy, as well as the largest hydrotherapy pool in both collegiate and professional sports. It is also one of the few collegiate training centers with a fullservice pharmacy and a full-service vision center.
BROUSSARD ATHLETIC TRAINING CENTER The two-story, 22,000-square-foot facility contains 20 treatment tables with the newest forms of modalities available, 14 taping stations, a 1,600-square-foot rehabilitation area which contains the latest rehabilitation equipment including the Cybex Norm, Woodway treadmills and Body Master select rise equipment. LSU INTERIM PRESIDENT/CHANCELLOR Dr. William L. Jenkins Interim President/ Interim Chancellor, LSU
Dr. William L. Jenkins is serving his second term as President of the Louisiana State University System, which has an annual budget of $3.4 billion and more than 54,000 students at 10 institutions, including four academic campuses, a law center, one of the world’s leading obesity research centers, a statewide AgCenter extension service, two health science centers and 10 public hospitals. Jenkins returned to his duties leading the LSU System as Interim President after serving until 2007 as the fifth system chief executive. In June he was also named the Interim Chancellor of the Baton Rouge LSU campus. Prior to becoming System President, Dr. Jenkins, a veterinary scholar, held virtually every major administrative position at LSU, including provost and chancellor, since coming to the university as Dean of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. Jenkins’ tenure as System President was marked by unprecedented growth and challenges, including destruction at LSU institutions in New Orleans in the aftermath of hurricanes in the fall of 2005. Although faced with a fiscal crisis and deep budget cuts that disrupted academics and forced the furloughs and firings of thousands of LSU employees, Jenkins pressed for calm and reflexive responses to the calamities. A South Africa native, Dr. Jenkins received his veterinary medicine degree from the University of Pretoria in 1958 and specialist credentials in 1968. Following his graduation, he came to the United States where, in 1970, he received his Ph.D in veterinary medicine from the University of Missouri in Columbia. He returned to South Africa where he practiced veterinary medicine for four years before joining the faculty at the University of Pretoria, advancing through the ranks to become professor and head of the Department of Veterinary Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology. In 1978, Dr. Jenkins became a member of the faculty in the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology at Texas A&M University. He was appointed dean of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 1988 and was named LSU’s provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs in September 1993. Three years later in 1996, the LSU Board of Supervisors named him LSU’s fifth Chancellor. As chancellor, Dr. Jenkins led the reorganization of the main campus administration to make it more efficient and lead the effort to produce a strategic plan, measures that were major factors in the crafting of LSU’s Flagship Agenda. As a teacher and administrator, Dr. Jenkins has received numerous teaching and public service awards. In 1997, the Public Relations Association of Louisiana named him Communicator of the Year and the regional chapter of Toastmasters International presented him with its 1999 Communication and Leadership Award. Other honors include the Vision of Excellence Award 2000 by the New Orleans Regional Chamber of Commerce and the New Orleans Chapter of MetroVision. In addition, his alma mater, the University of Pretoria, bestowed an Honorary Doctorate on Dr. Jenkins in September of 2000. The Southern Economic Development Conference also presented him with the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2004.

An active participant in national continuing education efforts, Dr. Jenkins has delivered more than 150 lectures and addresses to diverse groups in both the United States and abroad. The co-author of a textbook on veterinary pharmacology, Dr. Jenkins also has taught extensively at both the professional and graduate levels written more than 60 scientific articles and contributed 15 chapters to various collegiate textbooks. Dr. Jenkins has been active in numerous professional and civic organizations as well as select national committees. He served on the National Institute of Health’s Alcohol Abuse and Misuse on College Campuses Committee and on a special Steering Committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools that reviewed accreditation criteria for colleges and universities. Dr. Jenkins also is a member of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges’ Committee on Food and Society and is a member of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Coastal Restoration and Conservation. In addition, he has served on a number of public boards such as the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, The Nature Conservancy of Louisiana, Teach for America South Louisiana, and the Greater Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Jenkins and his wife, Peggy, have four children—Sharon, Gwynn, Anthea, and Warren—and nine grandchildren.

Joe Alleva LSU Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Joe Alleva continues to bring unprecedented national recognition to LSU as Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics. Under Alleva’s leadership, LSU enjoys one of the country’s premier athletics programs with success on and off the field of competition. Now in his fifth year at LSU, Alleva is dedicated to athletic and academic excellence, and is committed to providing the opportunities and the resources necessary for studentathletes to excel in competition, in the classroom and in the community. LSU’s prominence was evident in the final 2011-12 Capital One Cup standings that recognize the nation’s best athletic programs. With a national championship and three Southeastern Conference titles during the year, the Tigers finished fourth in both the men’s and women’s Capital One Cup competition, one of only two schools in the country – and the only one in the SEC -- to rank in the top four in both categories. Alleva joined the LSU family on April 4, 2008 after a highly successful tenure as director of athletics at Duke University for 10 years. Alleva’s role at LSU was further expanded in August of 2009 when vice chancellor was added to his title by the LSU Board of Supervisors. It is the first time in school history that the director of athletics has also held a vice chancellor position. Alleva is currently serving a fiveyear term on the prestigious NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee, reinforcing his position as one of the most respected athletic administrators in the country. Upon his arrival at LSU, Alleva unveiled a strategic master plan for the LSU athletics program -- “LSU: Thru and True” -- to ensure the advancement and future of LSU Athletics as an exemplary program. The central mission of the plan is to create an environment for studentathletes to reach their ultimate potential, prepare them to be champions in life and to set out goals and values for the entire athletics program. Alleva’s vision will keep LSU among the nation’s leaders in athletic facilities. He launched an aggressive fund-raising campaign to replace several hundred windows on Tiger Stadium that were in disrepair and a new coating to the façade of the structure is bringing the old stadium to new life. A renovated gating system on the west side of the stadium will debut in the fall of 2012 to include a plaza that celebrates LSU’s football national championships and recognition walls that honor Tiger All-Americans. Also in the fall of 2012, LSU begins construction on an expansion of the South End Zone of the stadium -- a project that will add premium seating, general public seating and two state-of-the-art video boards -- continuing an effort to augment one of the most iconic venues in all of college sports. Under Alleva’s direction, LSU’s worldrenowned track and field program received a state-of the-art running surface in 2010 when a new track was installed in Bernie Moore Stadium. Extensive renovations to the Tiger soccer facility were completed last fall, and future plans include a new gymnastics practice facility, a tennis complex and renovations to the Maravich Center and Carl Maddox Field House. Alleva directed a major renovation to the University Club golf course that was completed in September 2010 and allows the LSU men’s and women’s golf teams to compete on one of the most
challenging courses in the country. The renovated course helped prepare Tiger golfers John Peterson and Austin Ernst, respectively, to win 2011 NCAA men’s and women’s individual championships, marking the first time both titles were claimed by players from the same school. The Lady Tiger golfers have finished third at the NCAA Championships two years in a row, marking the highest finishes in LSU history. LSU Athletics completed another highly successful year in 2011-12 as 18 of the Tigers’ 20 varsity sports participated in NCAA post-season competition. The year was highlighted by the football team’s undefeated regular season, an SEC championship and an appearance in the BCS National Championship Game. The Lady Tiger track and field team captured the SEC and NCAA outdoor championships while the LSU softball squad advanced to the Women’s College World Series. The Fighting Tiger baseball team won the 2012 SEC championship, and LSU led the nation in attendance for the 17th straight season. The 2011-12 season marked the first time in school history that LSU won both the SEC title in both football and baseball in the same athletic year. But the 2011-12 year was about more than just athletic success. Living up to Alleva’s mantra of “competition, classroom, community,” LSU studentathletes logged more than 3,700 hours in community service work across 20 sports through LSU’s Geaux Givers program. And 62 proud Tigers received their degrees from the university during LSU commencement ceremonies in May.
Outstanding performances of the 2010-11 athletic season included the exploits of the Fighting Tiger football squad that posted an 11-2 mark – including a Cotton Bowl victory – and finished the season ranked No. 8 in the nation. The year also featured Top 5 national finishes both indoors and outdoors by the men’s and women’s track and field teams. In 2008-09, all 20 LSU sports competed in NCAA postseason play for the first time in school history and the Tiger baseball team won the national championship. LSU ranked second among Southeastern Conference teams in the Learfield Director’s Cup All-Sports standings and finished in the Top 20 for the sixth year in a row. With a strong commitment to academics, Alleva ensures that the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes is a first-class facility that provides student-athletes the resources necessary for success in the classroom and personal development. The facility was recently enhanced by the addition of a media training center that gives student-athletes valuable assistance in improving their communications skills. And with a strong emphasis on community service and outreach programs, the implementation under Alleva’s direction of the “Geaux Givers” program fosters a relationship between the local community and LSU studentathletes, who regularly participate in philanthropic events. In addition, Alleva has bolstered the department’s L-Club program to reach out and connect with
former student-athletes. Alleva oversees a staff of outstanding coaches and he has made critical additions to LSU’s coaching staff over the past two years. He hired former LSU guard Johnny Jones in April to breathe new life and enthusiasm into the men’s basketball program and recently added Julia Sell as the new women’s tennis coach. Last year, he lured the dynamic Nikki Caldwell to LSU to coach the Lady Tiger basketball team and then hired Beth Torina to direct the Tiger softball program, both of whom immediately returned their respective programs to NCAA post-season success. Alleva is an innovator with bold ideas that benefit not only LSU but all of Greater Baton Rouge. He has been instrumental in the planning of the Bayou Country Superfest, a two-day country music concert and festival held in Tiger Stadium each spring. The event attracts nearly 100,000 visitors to the LSU campus and makes a tremendous economic impact upon the local community. Alleva has served on numerous national committees throughout his career including the Football Bowl Certification Committee, the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet and several Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference committees. He became director of athletics at Duke in 1998 and his impressive tenure there propelled the university into the ranks of America’s top allaround collegiate programs. Among his outstanding list of accomplishments includes the greatest 10-year period in Duke Athletics, winning more ACC and NCAA championships than in any other decade in school history. Alleva, whose hometown is Suffern, N.Y., majored in Finance at Lehigh University and received his bachelor’s degree in 1975. While at Lehigh, Alleva was the quarterback of the football team and team captain in 1974. Alleva also played on the Lehigh baseball team. He served as a graduate assistant football coach and earned an MBA in 1976. While at Duke, Alleva played a key role in Durham’s community sports scene. He started Little League Baseball in Durham over 20 years ago, and also began the American Legion baseball program. He is a member of the North Carolina American Legion Hall of Fame, Suffern High School Hall of Fame and the Rockland County Hall of Fame. Alleva and his wife, Annie, have three children, J.D., Jeff, and Jenny.

PRACTICE FACILITY In April 2011, the LSU Golf House was given a well deserved renaming to the Mary and Woody Bilyeu Golf Practice Facility. The Tiger Athletic Foundation paid tribute to the couple for their generous donation that helped redo the University Club, making the course more challenging for collegiate golfers. Playing on the course helped the LSU women to their best ever third place finishes in both the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Championships. “The generosity of the Bilyeu’s has been tremendous, and they are going to make people’s dreams come true for years and years to come,” TAF Senior Vice President Rick Perry said. “There will be young people with the opportunity to chase their dream, not only to be professional golfers but to get the opportunity to come to LSU and get an education. The facility features office and storage areas for both teams, indoor hitting bays, computer analysis stations and meeting and locker room space for both teams as well as graphic displays of the history of both golf programs through the years. The outdoor hitting area is expansive where players can work on all facets of their game.
