THE BEST WE’VE SEEN 2010-11 SEASON REVIEW

The subhead said it all on the preview for the 2010-11 LSU Women’s Golf Team: “Better Than Ever.” Every school tries to use a catch phrase that goes with their program, not just in women’s golf, but in a lot of sports. This one turned out to be so true as the Lady Tigers had the greatest season in their history, as a senior wrapped up one of the greatest four-year careers in history and a freshman had the best possible season a golfer could have. Amazing Start In the first three tournaments of the fall season, the Lady Tigers would win once and finish second twice, posting nine rounds under par with a combined score of 51-under par. LSU would win the Mason Rudolph Classic on the site of the 2012 NCAA Championships with a three-day school record total of 21-under 843, thanks to a school record start of 10-under 278 in the opening round. LSU would equal that 278 total again in the final round of the Tar Heel Invitational. Senior Megan McChrystal birdied four of the final five holes to win the NCAA Golf Preview, including the 17th and 18th to score a two-shot victory with a final round of 65 posting a school-record 10-under par total of 206. She would lose in a playoff in the Tar Heel but she was well on her way to topping her own marks for season average and posting a career average number that would be difficult to top. In the Tar Heel, a freshman named Austin Ernst of Seneca, N.C., made her first appearance for the Lady Tigers and put people in the golf world on notice to keep an eye on her as she posted a five-under 211 and a tie for 10th.

AUSTIN ERNST

LSU

TESSA TEACHMAN

A Title to Start The Spring Ernst helped LSU to a second place finish in the opening event of the spring, the Central District Invitational, becoming the first freshman to win a tournament for the Lady Tigers since 1997. Ernst finished with a three-under 213 (72-67-72). McChrystal finished third at even par 216.

The Post-Season Begins The Lady Tigers had their lineup set when the post-season began in what would be the best post-season over three tournaments the team had in its long history -- seniors McChrystal and Amalie Valle, juniors Jacqueline Hedwall and Tessa Teachman and freshman Ernst. LSU had its best finish in the SEC tournament since 2004 with a third place finish, shooting 23-over 887. Ernst led LSU with a three-over 219 to finish in a tie for ninth and four LSU golfers were in the top 20. For the Lady Tigers, despite not getting putts to drop on the last two days, it was a confidence building trip on the way to the NCAA Central Regional in South Bend, Ind. In the Regional, LSU was not going to forget the year before when they failed to advance to the NCAA Championships by one shot. Needing to be in the top eight, there wasn’t much doubt of LSU’s advancement after two rounds. In fact, LSU was trying to win the tournament by the third round and they finished second behind powerful UCLA, just four shots behind the Bruins. It equaled the best finish ever in an NCAA Regional for the Lady Tigers and sent LSU to the NCAA Division I Championship for the third time in four years. McChrystal won her fifth individual title of her career, tying for the individual title with a two-over 218. For Ernst it was her second top 10 of the post-season with a three-over 219.

On To College Station There was a feeling of confidence when the LSU team left for College Station because 1) of the way the team played in the NCAA Preview and 2) the way the team was playing entering the tournament. LSU put itself in the thick of things in the opening round for the team title and then Ernst put her name at the top of the leaderboard after two rounds after a second-round 66 that included birdies on the final three holes of the round. LSU’s third round was derailed by a two-hour lightening delay that forced the Lady Tigers to come back and finish the round at the first peak of sunlight on Saturday. Ernst had two triples on her card, taking a 77 while Tiffany Lau of UCLA took the lead after a two-hole stretch of hole-in-one, 30-foot birdie. But in a whatever you can do, I can do better type of mentality, Ernst came out later in the afternoon for the final round and aced the second hole and then rolled in a 60-foot birdie on the next hole to take the lead for good. She would finish at seven-under 281 after a second 66 to claim the title and put LSU at its best finishing position in the NCAAs – third, just eight shots away from the title. Better Than Ever? For now the 2010-11 season may well have been the best in the 30-plus years of women’s golf at LSU. It is one that will be tough to top but the 2011-12 team wants to try. Why Not Again? The toughest thing to do sometimes in college athletics is to have success on top of success. But after the season the Lady Tigers had in 2011, with three returnees including an NCAA champion, two top transfers from major universities and an incoming freshman continuing the Swedish tradition that the LSU Lady Tigers have drawn from in recent years, there is really no need to think that anything other than another good season is in the cards. LSU is coming off a year where success didn’t come easy, but it came in a way that showed their hard work paid off. It resulted in several record team rounds and a third-place finish in the NCAA Division I Championship, LSU’s best finish ever.

ONLY ONE LSU

This is a group of players and a coaching staff who know that to be successful, the hard work will have to continue. That’s something members of this year’s team don’t seem to mind. Returnees Jacqueline Hedwall returns for her senior season after averaging 74.7 strokes per round in 2011, almost a two stroke reduction in stroke average from the 2010 season. She had nine rounds of par or under and came through with key rounds that helped LSU throughout the year in important tournaments. Hedwall, from Sweden, is a grinder who has played in every LSU tournament her first three years and had a top 30 finish in the NCAA championships with a key round of 73 in the delayed third round. Baton Rouge’s Tessa Teachman comes into her senior year off a top 25 performance in the World University Games in China this past summer. Teachman had one of the biggest rounds of her career at the end of the NCAA Championships, posting a one-over 73 to help LSU move back into third place after 72 holes. She averaged 75.5 stroke per round last year with eight rounds of par or under. The three-time member of the NGCA All-Scholar Team finished in a tie for fourth in a field of 93 in the NCAA Fall Preview with a five-under score of 211. She helped LSU’s win in the Mason Rudolph on the course of the 2012 NCAA Championship with an opening round of five-under 67. The other returnee had a freshman season unlike any other in the history of the LSU women’s program. Austin Ernst captured the NCAA Division I Individual Championship and then backed it up in her first tournament back after a summer of school work by reaching the 18th hole of the semifinals of the United States Women’s Amateur. Ernst fired rounds of 72-66-77-66 to shoot a school record total of seven-under 281 to win the NCAAs and the way she recovered in the final round after a third round that was carried over to Saturday showed the mettle of the young first-year college star. She finished in the top 10 in all three postseason events, the second consecutive year an LSU women’s golfer has achieved that mark. She made her mark in the first event of the spring, the Central District Invitational (three-under 213) when she became the first freshman to win a title for LSU since 1997. She averaged 73.2 for her first season with five top 10s and 14 rounds of par or under, six of those coming in the last rounds of tournaments.

Newcomers The unique thing about the 2011-12 team is that this will be a veteran team in many ways even with half the roster making their LSU debut. But two have experienced Division I college golf at other universities before transferring to Baton Rouge and that makes them extremely ready for the challenges that lie ahead. Lindsay Gahm comes into Baton Rouge after earning Freshman of the Year honors in the Big 10 after leading the Hoosier in stroke average at 75.4. She qualified for the NCAA Central Regional and had a third-place finish with a three-under 213 in the Lady Northern Invitational with a season-best 69 in the second round. She had two other top 10s, including a seventh in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic (75-73-72). The University of San Francisco is where Katrina Hegge played with success for two seasons before coming to Baton Rouge. She averaged 76.7 in both seasons with seven top 10 finishes in her two years, including a victory in the Fresno Lexus Classic at 216 (73-72-71). She finished in the top 10 in both West Coast Conference championship events. LSU’s lone freshman is Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom. In her pre-college days, she posted 11 wins with 10 second place finishes and is ranked seventh overall in the Swedish Ladies rankings. Sagstrom was part of the winning team in 2011 in the Ladies Team Amateur Championship and 11th in the French International Junior Amateur. She has also won the Swedish Junior Championship and has been a member of the Swedish National team.

The Schedule The Lady Tigers schedule set by head coach Karen Bahnsen is full of familiar stops including three of the four fall tournaments. The opener in September won’t be totally unfamiliar as LSU has had success in recent years at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic. Then it’s on to defend their title in the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview, which takes on greater importance this year as the Preview event of the 2012 NCAA Championship. The fall portion of the schedule ends with the Tar Heel Invitational (where LSU finished second a year ago) and the second year of the Pac-10/SEC Challenge, this time on the home course of the SEC in Knoxville. The spring portion features a bit of a different look as LSU opens the season in Puerto Rico before its normal opening spring tournament, the Central District Invitational in Parish, Fla. This year’s LSU Tiger Golf Classic is set for March 9-11 at the University Club and the regular season concludes at Tempe, Ariz., and the PING/ASU Invitational. The schedule sets itself up perfectly for a team that has the experience to be rewarded again with post-season success.

KAREN BAHNSEN HEAD COACH • 28TH SEASON

The media guide preview called the Lady Tiger’s 2011 team “Better Than Ever.” When freshman Austin Ernst sank the last putt on the 18th green on the final day of the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships that gave her the individual championship and the team its program best third place finish, the satisfied smile on Coach Karen Bahnsen’s face said it all. There was no doubt that her team had accomplished so much. In fact, it accomplished more than any team in the 32year history of the program that began in the 1979-80 season with a certain coach as its first recruit. In that time, the LSU women’s team has gone from a team that had to go to the LSU Bookstore to buy matching shirts to a team that had an individual NCAA champion and a team bringing home a big NCAA trophy for the first time.

But Karen Bahnsen has had a lot to smile about since Buddy Alexander handed her the keys to the LSU women’s golf program prior to the 1984-85 season. The enthusiasm and competitive nature that Karen Bahnsen showed then is the same enthusiasm and competitive nature that she shows today. Now after the “Better Than Ever” season, Bahnsen settles in to prepare for a new season of college golf. The past is the past and the memories will always be pleasant, but now she is ready to direct another golf adventure for the Lady Tigers. It’s one she hopes will take her team back to the Championships, but she knows it will be one filled with lessons learned that will make her team better at the end of the journey. She has had the drive, the determination and a willingness to succeed ever since she was playing at LSU in the early 1980s, joining the fledgling program as its first signee. One can also say that those who have succeeded in this program are those that understand the same drive, determination and willingness to do whatever is necessary that Bahnsen preaches. Bahnsen knows what it takes to get to the pinnacle of women’s collegiate golf – the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship Tournament. She will ask her team to work hard and respond to the challenge, but it will be nothing less than she ever asked of herself as a player. If the player accepts and understands, success usually follows. Now that message is being spread farther thanks to those who have worked and played for her. coaches. Ashley (Winn) Tonore, who played for Bahnsen in 1995-98, is the Director of Golf and head women’s coach at ULM. Former player Alexis Rather has also joined the coaching fraternity in her fourth year as an assistant and her second at LSU. Over the years Bahnsen has come up with a simple philosophy that she started using as a player. It’s so simple, but so amazingly effecting when put into play. She wants her team to play each shot as a separate event. If something bad happens, forget it and move on. Don’t let it carry on for four or five holes. Most of all, she wants her players to have fun. Bahnsen’s love and desire for a program she has devoted over half her life is what also gives her a smiling satisfaction about a program she has virtually helped design from scratch. Plus, all these years of coaching have done nothing to slow her down. In fact, she is more energized than ever to make the program a continuing contender in the national spotlight. How many programs are there in any sport in Division I intercollegiate athletics where the program’s first recruit goes on to become the head

coach of the program and stays long enough to not only be the dean of league coaches in the sport, but also one of the longest tenured coaches in school history? But she’s not just going through the motions. A season with an individual national champion and third place team finish tell you that. She is one of the most respected individuals in the game today, not just in the SEC but in all college golf circles. That is why she was inducted in December 2008 into the National Golf Coaches Hall of Fame. She has also done a fabulous job of changing as women’s golf changed. Since her arrival at LSU in 1979, the sport of women’s golf has risen in talent and stature to the point that SEC championships and national championships are decided by mere strokes instead of one or two teams dominating a field. Bahnsen has contributed her share of names to the list of SEC stars in her years as head coach. There was the nation’s No. 1 player, Jenny Lidback, in the mid-1980s, who led LSU to the NCAA Championship Tournament and then went on to

become a major tournament winner on the LPGA Tour. Also, from the 1980s, came Jackie Gallagher, a steady player who had a long and successful career on the women’s tour. The “Three Amigas” signaled a new era in LSU women’s golf in the mid-1990s when the highly recruited Ashley Winn, Michelle Louviere and Laura Moore led LSU to a succession of NCAA appearances (including a program best fifth place finish in 1998), a No. 1 ranking and nine tournament titles. Katy Wilkinson-Harris ended the 1990s with bookend All-American performances in her freshman and senior years. The 2000s opened with Shreveport’s Meredith Duncan bringing LSU national recognition by winning the U.S. Women’s Amateur title and helping her country keep the Curtis Cup in matches with Great Britain and Ireland. Now a sensational career in college golf has ended and another one is a smashing success in its first year. Megan McChrystal earned All-American honors for the third straight year while setting all the LSU records for single season and career stroke average. Head Coach Karen Bahnsen

putting her third all-time in single season titles. Now LSU has its first national champion in freshman Austin Ernst, who shot a pair of six-under 66s and had a hole-in-one to capture the NCAA D1 Championship. She then proved it was no fluke in her first tournament since the NCAAs, the August USGA Women’s Amateur, advancing to the semifinal round. Also back this season are two members of the team that finished a best ever third in the Championships, Tessa Teachman and Jacqueline Hedwall. Simply put, the LSU women’s golf program remains and continues to grow in national status each and every year. Bahnsen takes the LSU program into its 33rd season with the same dogged determination she has shown throughout her days as a player and during her years as head coach. The numbers show her success: 19 All-Americans, 38 All-SEC, 32 tournament titles, 35 individual titles, 11 top three finishes in the SEC championships, 17 appearances in the NCAA regionals, 10 appearances in the NCAA Division I Championship and six top-10 finishes in those 10 events. She has coached two winners of the prestigious LPGA Diana Shore Award (Lisette Lee in 2000 and Meredith Duncan in 2002) and the 1986 College

Player of the Year (Jenny Lidback). But let’s talk off the course as well. There have been 78 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections, 25 National Golf Coaches Association Academic Scholars, and for many years, the women’s golf team has had one of the highest GPAs for an athletic team at the school. In 2010 Bahnsen’s golf team was recognized as just one of three teams at LSU to earn an NCAA Public Recognition Award for exceptional work in the classroom. The awards are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rate (APR). She knows nothing on the LPGA or Futures tour is guaranteed for any golfer. She knows what it is like to have a husband, a family and the need to divide time between the coaching job and the family job. Her values on balancing both are what make her a special person and a coach that players want to play for. Every year has brought new challenges and every time Bahnsen has answered that call. Every year, the desire to succeed is that much greater and that is what seems to continue to light the fire of the lady who knows LSU golf inside and outside, backwards and forwards. Bahnsen’s teams learn a lot about golf during their LSU days, but they also learn a lot about the ups and

downs of sports. She doesn’t just go through the motions of being a coach. Bahnsen knows what the girls are going through with each shot they take and she feels their excitement and disappointments. She is there to congratulate, offer a tip when necessary and provide the consoling hands of sympathy when things don’t go the right way. It’s that style which has earned her the respect of her peers throughout the league and country. Bahnsen came to LSU with credentials that were excellent, lettering in golf at McGill-Toolen High School in Mobile, Ala. She led the school to two state titles and in 1979 won the state individual championship and the National High School Tournament. He mother was an LPGA teaching professional, a four-time Alabama state women’s champion, and a Mobile Sports Hall of Fame inductee. Bahnsen is married to LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director David “Bo” Bahnsen. “They have two children, son, Darren, 22 (a former member of state championship basketball and golf teams at University High in Baton Rouge and Head Manager for the LSU men’s basketball team) and daughter, Devin, 20, a sophomore at LSU.

ALEXIS RATHER ASSISTANT COACH • 2ND SEASON

The Rather File Name: Alexis Jane Rather Hometown: Tupelo, Miss. Date of Birth: March 2, 1985 College: LSU BA, Communications, 2007 MA, Sports Managment, 2008

If it seems that LSU Head Coach Karen Bahnsen and Alexis Rather are in sync after just one season together in a Coach-Assistant relationship and a season that led to a schoolbest third-place team finish in the NCAA, then you would be correct. But it’s not like Rather suddenly gained all the knowledge of LSU women’s golf in one short year. She is an LSU program veteran and, like her mentor, she knows the history of the team and what is necessary to get teams through delicate moments in important rounds because she has lived it. The former LSU golfer is back for her second season as assistant coach for the LSU program following a two-year stint as assistant coach at Ole Miss. The native of Tupelo, Miss., was a fouryear letter winner at LSU, appeared in two NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships and was a four-time National Golf Coaches Association scholar-athlete. Rather, a two-time First-Team All-Louisiana golfer, had three top 10 finishes in her 2008 senior season. That year, she also chipped in for the only birdie in sudden death in a playoff for the final qualifying spot at the NCAA East Regional that got LSU to the Division I National Championships. LSU finished in 15th place in the NCAA Championships that season. Over the course of her career, Rather played in all but three tournaments during her four years. She posted three top 10s and six top 20 performances and her 128 career rounds played is tied for fourth most rounds played by an LSU women’s golfer.

12

2011-12 LSU WOMEN’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE

She averaged 76.84 strokes through her fouryear career. She was also a four-time member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. At Ole Miss, she showed the type of coach she would be, helping guide the Rebels back to postseason play and win a tournament for the first time since 2004 as the women’s golf team earned the Chancellor’s Cup for the women’s varsity team at Ole Miss with the highest grade point average. Since returning to LSU, she has helped the program at practice, in tournaments and on the road, giving LSU another important voice on the road when it comes to recruiting. During tournaments, Rather can be seen at various spots on the course, offering help when needed and just encouragement to the Lady Tigers at other times when needed. Rather was named LSU’s recipient on the SEC Community Service Team while in college and heavily involved her entire LSU career with CHAMPS service projects throughout the community. She graduated from LSU in July 2007 with an honors degree in Communications and her master’s in Sports Management from LSU in 2008. “It is wonderful having Alexis here at LSU as my assistant,” said Coach Bahnsen. “She is a great addition to our LSU family. As a former player, she has brought a lot to our team and in the assistant coach position has played a big role in our success this past season. It is great to have her to work with and I believe we make a great team.”

Bryan, Texas -- May 18-21, 2011 The Traditions Club -- Par 72 LSU posted its best finish ever in the NCAA Division I Championships with a strong third place showing in which the Lady Tigers finished just eight shots out of the lead of winner UCLA. Even bigger, freshman Austin Ernst fired a six-under 66 in the final round to win the individual title with a school record 72-hole score of seven-under 281 (27-66-77-66). Ernst had the first hole-in-one of her career on the second hole to jump start what would be the second 66 of the tournament. At the time she became the first LSU golfer, man or woman, to win the individual title in 70 years (Earl Stewart, 1941) and the first freshman to win the women’s national championship since Jennifer Rosales of USC in 1998. SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS

1992 LSU SEC Champions

The Southeastern Conference has continuted to show its leadership in the intergration of athletic competition and higher education. Since its formation in 1933, the SEC has achieved both stature and stability by designating governing/voting power to the presidents of the member institutions. They have determined the policies of the conference and through the years this involvement has been the principal source of strength in the evolution of the SEC. Intercollegiate athletics encountered many challenges in the 1990s and the SEC provided guidance. In 1993, the member institutions adopted The Principles of Gender Equity. Committed to increasing the quantity and quality of women’s athletic opportunities, each school provides at least two more women’s intercollegiate programs than the number of men’s. SEC schools began athletic competition over 100 years ago as members of the Southern YEAR SITE WINNER 1981 Opelika, Ala. Florida LSU-3rd 1982 Pine Mountain, Ga. NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS It was a confident group of LSU Lady Tigers who arrived in Bryan, Texas for the NCAA D1 Golf Championships. And why not? This team had already finished second with a then-school record 54-hole total in the Fall Preview on the same Traditions Club Course. The fivesome of seniors Megan McChrystal and Amalie Valle, juniors Tessa Teachman and Jacqueline Hedwall, and freshman Austin Ernst had just posted a third place finish in the SEC Championships and a school-best second place finish in the NCAA regional in South Bend. In the second round, the indication of how special a week this might be came in to focus as Ernst birdied the final three holes to shoot six-under 66

and take a three-shot lead midway through the tournament. That scored helped the Lady Tigers stand a solid third halfway home in the event. The freshman from Seneca, S.C., who had assistant coach Alexis Rather walking with her the entire day, showed maturity beyond her first year telling the media, “The ball doesn’t know how old you are.” The third round had its bizarre moments as a near two-hour lightening delay, that would force an hour of play the next day to finish, seemed to take the starch out of LSU’s third-round play and Ernst as LSU dropped out of the top three and Ernst struggled on a couple of holes. But this was a team that had one of the best, if not the best, final round stroke averages in the country and it was a confident group that

took to the course later that afternoon. They knew they could finish with a flourish and flourish they did. The Lady Tiger team shot its best round of the event, a two-over 290 and LSU finished a solid third, just eight shots away from winner UCLA. It was the best ever finish for LSU in the history of the event. Ernst was at the top of her game and posted another six-under 66 that included a spectacular hole-in-one on the second hole and then a 60-foot birdie putt on the third hole that gave her back the individual lead for good. Ernst had rounds of 72-66-77-66 for a school record 72-hole score of seven-under 281 as she became the first freshman to win the women’s national championship since 1998. Hedwall also had a good tournament, finishing in a tie for 26th. It marked the second straight year an LSU golfer made national news in the championships as the year before in Wilmington, N.C., then junior Megan McChrystal shot a school single round, course and event record for an NCAA D1 Women’s Championship. The Stuart, Fla., native had nine birdies and just one bogey on her card to shoot an eight-under par round of 64 to finish in a tie for fifth place in the 2010 championships.

2012 NCAA Championship/LSU Championship History The regional rounds for the 2012 Championships will again be conducted over three different golf courses -East: Penn State Golf Course, State College, Pa.; Central: The Ohio State University Scarlet Course, Columbus, Ohio; West: Colorado at the Colorado National Country Club in Erie, Col. The regionals are from May 3-5. A total of 24 teams and six individuals are seeded into each regional. The eight lowest scoring teams, as well as the two lowest individuals not on those eight qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships at The Vanderbilt Ledgends Club in Franklin, Tenn., May 15-18. LSU made its first of 11 NCAA championship appearances in the first NCAA event in 1982 in Palo Alto, Calif., when LSU finished 16th. The Lady Tigers would return in 1986 when LSU, led by Player of the Year Jenny Lidback, helped the Tigers to a ninth-place finish. Lidback finished tied for 17th. The Lady Tigers made their longest championship run starting in 1986, when the Three Amigas (Ashley Winn, Laura Moore and Michelle Louviere) took the Lady Tigers to top 10-finishes in 1996 (8th) and 1998 (5th). Louviere finished tied for 19th in 1986 and Ashley Winn tied for 15th.

NCAA Championships The Tigers posted 10th-place finishes in 1999 and 2000 and a 12th place finish in 2001 on teams led by Katy Harris and Meredith Duncan. Duncan played the last 54 holes in 2-under par after opening with a 10-over 82 to finish in a tie for seventh place in 2000 and Harris shot a 1-under 287 to finish in a tie for third in LSU’s appearance in 2001. Katy Harris, Meredith Duncan and now Megan McChrystal are the three LSU players who played in the championships all four years of their careers. Harris made it on four teams from 1998 to 2001, while Duncan qualified on three teams and once individually from 1999-2002. McChrystal’s four years (2008-11) included three team appearances, including assisting this year’s team best third place finish. Since 1993, to get to the NCAA Division I Championships, teams and individuals must go through the NCAA Regional Tournaments. LSU has hosted the regional on three occasions (1993, 2002, 2007). LSU has advanced to the regional round of NCAA post-season play since that first tournament in 1993 every year but 1994 and 2003.

THE UNIVERSITY CLUB

For the past decade, the LSU men’s and women’s golf teams have called University Club home. After undergoing a nine-month renovation in 2009-10, the home of LSU’s nationally-ranked programs features a newly-designed par-72 layout that serves as an impressive showpiece for generations to come. The course at the University Club was re-designed under the guidance of LSU legend and PGA Tour pro David Toms and renowned golf course architect Jim Lipe,

who designed the original University Club in 1998. The course is carved into nearly 300 acres of land just seven miles south of the LSU campus on Nicholson Drive. It comes as no surprise that the University Club has already been selected as an NCAA Men’s Golf Regional host site for the 2013 season, marking the first time in the illustrious history of the LSU men’s golf program that the Tigers will serve as hosts to an NCAA postseason tournament on its home course. The challenging 18-hole, par-72 course at University Club will play to 7,700 yards from its championship tees and feature wide fairways bordered by pine hammocks and native grasses, in addition to 2,000 feet of beautiful bulkhead. Four additional sets of tees are also available for players of all ages and skill levels. In addition, the lake areas have been increased by 110,000 cubic yards in total and more than 500 trees have been added throughout the course to provide a challenging test of golf for anyone playing the University Club. Not only that, but the course now has one of the most impressive finishing holes in golf as the 18th hole features a new championship “Tiger” tee with a beautiful six-foot high wood bulkhead. The lake was expanded near the green, where an additional 180 feet of bulkhead was also added. In the summer of 2011, the members of the University Club voted the 18th hole as the course’s “Signature Hole.” The course was built on land donated to the Tiger Athletic Foundation and subsequently leased to The University Club. The original vision that drove University Club’s development was having a premier course that would provide a place for TAF members to play, as well as a home for the men’s and women’s golf teams at LSU. The course opened for members on Oct. 22, 1998. The swimming and tennis facility adjacent to the course opened in the summer of 2000. The surrounding housing development continues to grow, adding to the beauty of the area surrounding the golf course. The Tiger Athletic Foundation is a private, non-profit corporation that serves as the fund-raising and development arm of the LSU athletics department. Each year, the TAF underwrites scholarship and academics awards, as well as capital development projects for LSU athletics.

U-Club Hole-By-Hole In its original state, through the summer of 2009, the U-Club played at just over 7,200 yards from its Tiger Tees and just over 6,000 yards for the early LSU Women’s Golf Classics. Now the course measures out at a hefty 7,700 yards from the Tiger Tees

and an impressive 6,602 yards from member tees. Here are some characteristics of the course and pictures of the holes (tees are listed in the following order: Tiger-Scratch-Member-SeniorLadies/Jrs.)

Distances

No. 3

Tiger Tee – 3892-3808 – 7700 Scratch – 3648-3586 – 7234 Member -- 3377-3225 – 6602

Senior – 3043-2935 – 5978 Ladies/Jrs. – 2660-2643 -- 5303

No. 1 – Par 4 – 456-402-385-349-274 A championship tee lengthened the hole some 50 yards. The former waste bunker on the left side was replaced by an area of pine hammock and several trees planted in the right rough. On the approach shot, players have to watch for a grass hollow that replaced greenside bunkers.

No. 1

No. 2 – Par 4 – 447-435-382-324-312 A good hole that didn’t need a lot of change. Two bunkers tempt those looking to carry a drive and the raised left side of the green creates a top shelf pin placement. No. 3 – Par 5 – 673-632-578-542-496 Can you say long? The No.1 handicap hole on the course had 53 yards added to its Tiger distance and features native grass areas down both sides of a fairway that was much easier to hit. The water has been expanded off the tee, replacing the old fairway bunker. The elevated green makes a more demanding approach.

No. 4 – Par 4 – 375-341-315-288-231 This was a short par 4 that some long hitters could put the ball at the edge of the green with an accurate drive. That task is a little tougher as the left side water now extends into the fairway. The green has been extended back for an addition hole location.

No. 6

No. 5 – Par 3 – 189-172-155-137-96 This picturesque par 3 loses the wide bail-out area on the right as you look from the tee. The lake extends closer to the green making accuracy everything from the tee box. No. 6 – Par 5 – 573-554-522-478-450 This hole has a whole new identity with a new lake down the entire length of the hole. A creek also crosses the fairway, directly in the landing zone of most hitters. The creek extends into a pond at the green making the approach shot more demanding.

No. 8

No. 8 – Par 3 – 222-188-166-130-107 The long par-3 eighth has undergone a complete renovation. The tee box has been reshaped and elevated some seven feet. The water on the hole has expanded to the front left of the green. The putting surface has been reshaped with three new bunkers. No. 9 – par 4 – 486-467-443-394-345 The second longest par 4 on the course has several trees down the right side. Waste bunkers have been replaced by pine hammock areas and native grass comes into play on the left side. The result is a tighter landing area to try to place a drive.

No. 11 – Par 5 – 567-557-516-484-429 This long par 5 has native dunes on the left side. A fairway bunker in the middle of the fairway that is 110 yards out from the green will cause approach problems. The water down the right has been expended close to the newly-elevated green, placing a premium on getting the ball to the hole. No. 12 – Par 4 – 422-410-368-350-307 Several trees will cause problem with errant drives on both sides of the hole. A new sand bunker has replaced a grass bunker in front of the green. No. 15 – Par 4 – 365-347-327-287-244 This hole probably had some of the biggest changes on the golf course. There is a new elevated tee box and the right side of the hole features mounding with native grasses. The fairway has been reshaped and bunkers added on the left. 2012 LSU TIGER GOLF CLASSIC THE HISTORY

THE RITE OF SPRING AT LSU’S U-CLUB

This year’s LSU Golf Classic will mark the 31st consecutive spring that the LSU women’s golf team has hosted a tournament that has grown to be one of the most prestigious events of the women’s golf schedule. The Classic moved to the LSU University Club in 2000 and been played there every year except 2010 when U-Club renovations moved the event to English Turn in New Orleans, where the Lady Tigers hosted the event with Tulane. But the tournament roots go back to the local Fairwood Country Club and its unique membership that not only hosted and ran the tournament, but served as uncles and aunts for many of the teams that came each year. Club members hosted teams at their houses every year, allowing teams to save money in the days when women’s college golf wasn’t funded as it is today. Dinners were provided by the club along with member entertainment and some of the nation’s top golf teams and players came to participate. Jenny Lidback, who would go on to win a major championship on the LPGA tour, lost the tournament title in a playoff while at TCU and in 1986 would win the title as an LSU Lady Tiger. Arizona’s Marisa Baena had her coming out party as a freshman dominating the competition. In the final LSU-Fairwood event in 1999, Duke put on the course a lineup that would become one of the most dominating in the nation. Dan Brooks brought his Duke team back to Baton Rouge to win the 2007 renewal on the way to winning the East Regional at the U-Club, leading to a third straight NCAA Championship. LSU’s annual golf tournament has not only proven to be an important event on the women’s collegiate circuit, but it has proven to be a community event as seen by the hundreds of volunteers who take part each year. It’s those volunteers that the LSU golf program salutes for their tireless efforts that make the LSU event the success it is. Also thanks to the University Club for being a special home for LSU Golf and to the TAF for their work to continue to make the U-Club a strong test of golf.

The rite of spring known as the LSU Golf Classic returns to the newly-redesigned University Club, March 9-11, 2012. The Lady Tigers and their tournament returned in 2011 to their home University Club after a year away to allow a complete renovation of the course. This will mark the 31st year the Lady Tigers have hosted a tournament, the 30th in Baton Rouge. LSU has played the tournament (with the exception of 2010) at the U-Club every year since 2000 as well as hosting two NCAA regionals and an SEC Championship in that time. This year’s LSU Golf Classic has drawn another strong field of 18 teams as the Lady Tigers will host: College of Charleston, Kentucky, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisville, North Carolina, North Carolina State, North Carolina Wilmington, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Purdue, South Carolina, Tennessee, TCU, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest. TCU (1982, 1983), UNCW (2003), North Carolina (2004) and Virginia (2009) are previous winners of LSU women’s golf events. LSU has won its tournament seven times (1985, ‘86, ‘95, ‘98, 2000, ‘01, 05)

Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College has, throughout its 147-year history, served the people of Louisiana, the region, the nation, and the world. LSU is creating a revolution, one of pervasive change and advancement. For the past seven years, the focus of the LSU community has been an increased commitment to excellence. Our progress has been dramatic and shows no sign of stopping. Having witnessed many of yesterday’s possibilities become today’s tangible realities, the LSU community set forth to capitalize on its success. The goal was to improve our standing as a nationally competitive flagship university. Following intense discussions among the LSU Board of Supervisors, campus administrators, faculty, and student leaders, the objectives required to reach this status crystallized, providing the impetus for LSU’s National Flagship Agenda.

LSU’s Memorial Tower (top main photo) was one of the first structures completed on the present campus and sits east of the quadrangle (above, left). It represents the University as a memorial to those who gave their lives during World War I. Although it currently houses the LSU Anglo-American Art Museum, plans are in process to return Memorial Tower to a military museum as originally intended. The University lakes (above, right) on the LSU campus give various recreational options.

Prior to his appointment as LSU’s eighth chancellor, Dr. Martin established a distinguished career in higher education, serving most recently as president of New Mexico State University.

Before arriving at NMSU in 2004, Dr. Martin served for six years as vice president for agriculture and natural resources at the University of Florida, leading the university’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. He was elevated to senior vice president of the University of Florida shortly before being selected as NMSU’s president. Previously, he was vice president for agricultural policy and the dean of the College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota. He began his academic career at Oregon State University as a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. pieces for The Chronicle of Higher Education and University Business. Some of his philosophy is summed up in the following quote: “It is the tradition of land-grant universities to be non-traditional,” written as part of a 2001 article titled “The Land-Grant University in the 21st Century,” published in the Journal of Agricultural and Applied Economics. He traced the history of the land-grant movement from the mid-1800s and concluded that “the fundamental landgrant principles of accessibility, practical as well as classical education, research and discovery in the public interest, and connectedness to all the people remain powerful and profound.” A native of Crosby, Minn., Dr. Martin earned a bachelor’s degree in business and economics and a master’s degree in economics at Mankato State College (Minnesota State University) in Minnesota. He received his Ph.D. in applied economics from the University of Minnesota in 1977. Dr. Martin and his wife, Jan, have two children, both adopted from South Korea. Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics

LSU

Joe Alleva LSU Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics

Joe Alleva continues to bring unprecedented national recognition to LSU as Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics. Under Alleva’s leadership, LSU enjoys one of the country’s premier athletics programs with success on and off the field of competition. Now in his fourth season at LSU, Alleva is dedicated to athletic and academic excellence, and is committed to providing the opportunities and the resources necessary for student-athletes to excel in competition, in the classroom and in the community.

Alleva joined the LSU family on April 4, 2008 after a highly successful tenure as director of athletics at Duke University for 10 years. Alleva’s role at LSU was further expanded in August of 2009 when vice chancellor was added to his title by the LSU Board of Supervisors. It is the first time in school history that the director of athletics has also held a vice chancellor position. Alleva was recently appointed to a five-year term on the prestigious NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee, reinforcing his position as one of the most respected athletic administrators in the country. Upon his arrival at LSU, Alleva unveiled a strategic master plan for the LSU athletics program -- “LSU: Thru and True” -- to ensure the advancement and future of LSU Athletics as an exemplary program. The central mission of the plan is to create an environment for student-athletes to reach their ultimate potential, prepare them to be champions in life and to set out goals and values for the entire athletics program. Alleva’s vision for LSU athletics facilities includes plans to enhance the appearance of Tiger Stadium and transform the North Stadium Drive corridor into a showplace for the university. Under his direction, LSU’s world-renowned track and field program received a state-of the-art running surface last year when a new track was installed in Bernie Moore Stadium. Extensive renovations to the Tiger soccer facility will be completed this fall, and future plans include a new gymnastics practice facility, a tennis complex, and renovations to the Maravich Center and field house. Alleva directed a major renovation to the University Club golf course that was completed in September 2010 and allows the LSU men’s and women’s golf teams to compete on one of the most challenging courses in the country. The renovated course helped prepare Tiger golfers John Peterson and Austin Ernst, respectively, to win 2011 NCAA men’s and women’s individual championships, marking the first time both titles were claimed by players from the same school. The Lady Tiger golfers were third in the final team standings, marking the highest finish in LSU history. LSU Athletics completed another highly successful year in 2010-11, highlighted by a Fighting Tiger football squad that posted an 11-2 mark – including a Cotton Bowl victory – and finished the season ranked No. 8 in the nation. The 2010-11 athletic year also featured Top 5 national finishes both indoors and outdoors by the men’s and women’s track and field teams. In 2008-09, all 20 LSU sports competed in NCAA postseason play for the first time in school history and the Tiger baseball team won the national championship.

This past year LSU ranked second among Southeastern Conference teams in the Learfield Director’s Cup All-Sports standings and finished in the Top 20 for the sixth year in a row. Alleva ensures that the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes is a first-class facility that provides student-athletes the resources necessary for success in the classroom and personal development. The facility was recently enhanced by the addition of a media training center that gives student-athletes valuable assistance in improving their communications skills. And with a strong emphasis on community service and outreach programs, the implementation under Alleva’s direction of the “Geaux Givers” program fosters a relationship between the local community and LSU student-athletes, who regularly participate in philanthropic events. In addition, Alleva has bolstered the department’s L-Club program to reach out and connect with former student-athletes. Alleva oversees a staff of outstanding coaches and he made two critical additions to LSU’s coaching staff in the off-season. He lured the dynamic Nikki Caldwell to LSU to coach the Lady Tiger basketball team and then hired Beth Torina to direct the Tiger softball program, bringing a new wealth of knowledge and passion to the LSU women’s sports program. Alleva is an innovator with bold ideas that benefit not only LSU but all of Greater Baton Rouge. He has been instrumental in the planning of the Bayou Country Superfest, a two-day country music concert and festival held in Tiger Stadium each spring. The event attracts

nearly 100,000 visitors to the LSU campus and makes a tremendous economic impact upon the local community. Alleva has served on numerous national committees throughout his career including the Football Bowl Certification Committee, the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet and several Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference committees. He became director of athletics at Duke in 1998 and his impressive tenure there propelled the university into the ranks of America’s top all-around collegiate programs. Among his outstanding list of accomplishments includes the greatest 10-year period in Duke Athletics, winning more ACC and NCAA championships than in any other decade in school history. Alleva, whose hometown is Suffern, N.Y., majored in Finance at Lehigh University and received his bachelor’s degree in 1975. While at Lehigh, Alleva was the quarterback of the football team and team captain in 1974. Alleva also played on the Lehigh baseball team. He served as a graduate assistant football coach and earned an MBA in 1976. While at Duke, Alleva played a key role in Durham’s community sports scene. He started Little League Baseball in Durham over 20 years ago, and also began the American Legion baseball program. He is a member of the North Carolina American Legion Hall of Fame, Suffern High School Hall of Fame and the Rockland County Hall of Fame. Alleva and his wife, Annie, have three children, J.D., Jeff, and Jenny.

BILYEU GOLF PRACTICE FACILITY In April 2011, the LSU Golf House was given a well deserved renaming to the Mary and Woody Bilyeu Golf Practice Facility. The Tiger Athletic Foundation paid tribute to the couple for their generous donation that helped redo the University Club, making the course more challenging for collegiate golfers. Playing on the course helped both LSU teams reach the NCAA Championships in 2011 with the LSU women finishing a program best third in the country. “The generosity of the Bilyeu’s has been tremendous, and they are going to make people’s dreams come true for years and years to come,” TAF Senior Vice President Rick Perry said. “There will be young people with the opportunity to chase their dream, not only to be professional golfers but to get the opportunity to come to LSU and get an education. The facility features office and storage areas for both teams, indoor hitting bays, computer analysis stations and meeting and locker room space for both teams as well as graphic displays of the history of both golf programs through the years. The outdoor hitting area is expansive where players can work on all facets of their game.
