BAHNSEN HEAD COACH • 30TH SEASON
Karen Bahnsen has seen seasons come and seasons go in her years first as a member of the LSU women’s golf team and then as the head coach of the women’s golf team at LSU. She has watched the sport progress forward with better equipment, better scores and better players. In many ways, she is a historian for college golf and especially the history of golf at LSU and in the Southeastern Conference. Bahnsen has developed the LSU program into a respected national contender and she is as enthusiastic about her 30th season in 2013-14 as she was when she stepped on the campus as a freshman in the fall of 1979. That’s why the dean of SEC coaches and a Women’s Golf Coaches Association Hall of Famer continues to get the job done for her program and her University each and every year. She is driven to succeed and has the beliefs and values that reach her players and gives them the chance to be successful as well. 30 years. 30 successful years. It’s not just wins and losses. It’s grade point average as well as greens in regulation. It’s graduation day as well as tournament championships. It’s the big picture of preparing for the future whether that is as a business woman, a woman raising a family and if the chance to play professionally arises, then the LSU Lady Tigers are prepared for that as well. As the program enters its 35th season, the 30th under the head coaching watch of Bahnsen, it’s easy to see how far this program has come – from visiting the campus book store to get matching shirts for the first tournament to back-to-back third place team finishes in the NCAA Championships.

2013-2014 WOMEN’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE
She was the first recruit of a program that LSU started in the fall of 1979 that has under the tutelage of Bahnsen contributed her share of great starts in her years as head coach. There was the nation’s No. 1 player, Jenny Lidback, in the mid-1980s who won seven tournaments in one year. Lidback, the first women’s golfer in the LSU Hall of Fame, would go on to win an LPGA major in her long professional career. Also from the 1980s, came Jackie Gallagher, a steady player who had a long and successful career on the women’s tour including an LPGA victory. The “Three Amigas” signaled a new era in LSU women’s golf in the mid1990s when the highly recruited trio of Ashley Winn, Michelle Louviere and Laura Moore, led LSU to a succession of NCAA appearances (including a fifth place NCAA finish in 1998), a No. 1 ranking and nine tournament titles. Katy Wilkinson Harris ended the 1990s with All-American bookend performances in her freshman and senior years. The 2000s opened with Shreveport’s Meredith Duncan bringing LSU more national recognition by winning the United States Women’s Amateur title and helping her country keep the Curtis Cup in the matches with Britain and Ireland. Both Duncan and Lisette Lee in that same time period would win the prestigious Diana Shore award from the LPGA for their play as college seniors. By the end of the decade new starts were growing at LSU. First it was five-time champion Megan McChrystal, who would join Winn and Duncan as four-time SEC selections. McChrystal would earn three All-American citations while setting LSU records for single season and career stroke average. Then came Austin Ernst, who in two seasons would earn All-American honors and in

her freshman season win the NCAA individual championship. She also advanced to the 2011 semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur and the 2012 North-South Championship. Baton Rouge senior Tessa Teachman had her best season in 2012, shooting 1-under for 72 holes to finish third in the NCAA Championships. It was 2011 and 2012 that the Lady Tigers brought home third place hardware from the NCAA team championships. The Tigers have advanced to that championship round 12 times, 11 under Coach Bahnsen, including three of the last five years.
who played for Bahnsen in 1995-98, served for several years as the Director of Golf and head women’s coach at ULM. Former player Alexis Rather has also joined the coaching fraternity in her sixth year as an assistant and her fourth at LSU. Over the years Bahnsen has come up with a simple philosophy that she started using as a player. It’s so simple, but so amazingly effective when put into play. She wants her team to play each shot as a separate event. If something bad happens, forget it and move on. Don’t let it carry on for four or five holes.
Now the wheels have turned to 2013-14 and new expectations are sitting on the horizon. A young Lady Tiger team, suddenly in the midst of the best teams in the country, learned and got better from the experience of the 201213 season and is now ready to challenge again. They have seen the best, played with the best and are now ready, with the help of some incoming freshman, to be among the best. To Coach Bahnsen, it seems like only yesterday when Buddy Alexander, who was handling both the men’s and women’s golf teams at LSU, elected to hand her the keys to the LSU women’s golf program prior to the 1984-85 season. The enthusiasm and competitive spirit that Bahnsen showed people like Alexander as a player is the same enthusiasm and competitive spirit that is evident as a coach. She has had the drive, the determination and the willingness to succeed ever since those playing days. Now that drive, determination and willingness to succeed can be seen in those that have had success under Bahnsen’s careful vision. Bahnsen knows what it takes to get to the pinnacle of women’s collegiate golf – the NCAA Women’s Championship Tournament. She will ask her team to work hard and respond to the challenge, but it will be nothing less than she ever asked of herself as a player. If the player accepts and understands, success usually follows. Now that message is being spread farther thanks to those who have worked and played for her. Two former assistants – Marci Kornegay (South Florida) and Golda Borst (Kentucky) are now head coaches. Ashley (Winn) Tonore,
Most of all, she wants her players to have fun. Bahnsen’s love and desire for a program she has devoted over half her life to is what also gives her a smiling satisfaction about a program she has virtually helped design from scratch. Plus, all these years of coaching have done nothing to slow her down. In fact, she is more energized than ever to make the program a continuing contender in the national spotlight. How many programs are there in any sport in Division I intercollegiate athletics where the program’s first recruit goes on to become the head coach of the program and stays long enough to not only be the dean of league coaches in the sport, but also one of the longest tenured coaches in school history? But she’s not just going through the motions. A season with an individual national champion and back-to-back third place team finishes tell you that. She is one of the most respected individuals in the game today, not just in the SEC but all college golf circles. Bahnsen takes the LSU program to the 2013-14 season with the same dogged determination she has shown throughout her days as a player and during her years as head coach. The numbers show her success: 21 All-Americans, 45 All-SEC, 36 tournament titles, 37 individual titles, 11 top three finishes in the SEC championships, 19 appearances in the NCAA regionals, 11 appearances in the NCAA Division I championships and seven top-10 finishes in those 11 events. Let’s talk off the course as well. There have been 89 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections, 29 Women’s Golf Coaches Association Academic Scholars and

for many years, the women’s golf team has had one of the highest GPAs for an athletic team at the school. In 2010 Bahnsen’s golf team was recognized as just one of three teams at LSU to earn an NCAA Public Recognition Award for exceptional work in the classroom. The awards are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rate (APR). She knows that nothing on the LPGA or the Symetra tours is guaranteed for any golfer. She knows what it is like to have a husband, a family and the need to divide time between the coaching job and the family job. Her values on balancing both are what make her a special person and a coach that players want to play for. Every year has brought new challenges and every time Bahnsen has answered that call. Every year, the desire to succeed is that much greater and that is what seems to continue to light the fire of the lady who knows LSU golf inside and outside, backwards and forwards. Bahnsen’s teams learn a lot about golf during their LSU days, but they also learn a lot about the ups and downs of sports. She doesn’t just go through the motions of being a coach. Bahnsen knows what the girls are going through with each shot they take and she feels their excitement and disappointments. She is there to congratulate, offer a tip when necessary and provide the consoling hands of sympathy when things don’t go the right way. It’s the style which has earned her the respect of her peers throughout the league and country. Bahnsen came to LSU with credentials that were excellent, lettering in golf at McGill-Toolen High School in Mobile, Ala. She led the school to two state titles and in 1979 won the state individual championship and the National High School Tournament. Her mother was an LPGA teaching professional, a four-time Alabama state women’s champion, and a Mobile Sports Hall of Fame inductee. Bahnsen is married to LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director David “Bo” Bahnsen. They have two children, son, Darren, 25 (an LSU graduate, a former member of state championship basketball and golf teams at University High in Baton Rouge and a graduate assistant for the LSU men’s basketball team) and daughter, Devin, 22.

ASSISTANT COACH • 4TH SEASON
Alexis Rather teams with Karen Bahnsen for a fourth year as the LSU women’s golf team’s assistant coach in a relationship that has grown to the point where the two can complete each other’s sentences and successfully work together to keep the LSU women’s golf program one of the tops in the country. The pair put together a class of golfers that finished third in the NCAA championships both in 2011 and 2012 and have brought together a young group with a year’s experience and some new recruits that should put LSU back in the national picture in 2014. See one coach on the course and the other one is usually close by. They both know the advice to give and the proper times to give it. They know when to press and when to back off. It’s a coaching staff in sync in recruiting talent and then developing it to be the best it can be. Now it’s not like Rather suddenly gained all the knowledge of LSU’s women’s golf overnight. She is an LSU program veteran and, like her mentor, she knows the history of the team and what is necessary to get teams through delicate moments in important rounds because she has lived it. The former LSU golfer served two years as an assistant coach at Ole Miss before beginning her tenure at LSU. The native of Tupelo, Miss., was a four-year letter winner at LSU, appeared in two NCAA Women’s Golf Championships as a player and was a four-time Women’s Golf Coaches Association scholar-athlete. Rather, a two-time FirstTeam All-Louisiana golfer, had three top 10 finishes in her 2008 senior season. That year, she also chipped in for the only birdie in a sudden death playoff for the eighth and final qualifying spot at the NCAA East Regional that got LSU to the NCAA Women’s National Championships. LSU finished in 15th place in the NCAA Championships that season. Over the course of her career, Rather played in all but three tournaments.
She posted three top 10s and six top 20 performances and her 128 career rounds played is tied for the fourth most rounds played by an LSU women’s golfer. She averaged 76.84 strokes during her four-year career. She was also a four-time member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. At Ole Miss, she showed the type of coach she could be, helping guide the Rebels back to postseason play and win a tournament for the first time since 2004 as the women’s golf team earned the Chancellor’s Cup for the women’s varsity team at Ole Miss with the highest grade point average. Since returning to LSU, she has helped the program with practice routines, helped put together the annual LSU Tiger Golf Classic and been on the course for tournaments both at home and on the road. With Rather around, there is another important voice for LSU traveling the world recruiting. During tournaments, Rather can be seen at various spots on the course, offering help and encouragement to the Lady Tigers when needed. Rather was named LSU’s recipient on the SEC Community Service Team while in college and has been heavily involved her entire LSU career with the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program and service projects throughout the community. She graduated from LSU in July 2007 with an honors degree in Communications and her master’s in Sports Management from LSU in 2008. “It has been wonderful having Alexis back here at LSU as an assistant,” said Coach Bahnsen. “She is truly a part of our LSU family. As a former player, she has brought a lot to our team and in her position as assistant coach, she has played a big role in our success. It is great to have her to work with and we really do make a great team.” The results prove that right.

SEASON PREVIEW

SEASON
PREVIEW LSU women’s golf coach Karen Bahnsen made reference more than once during the past season that her young Lady tiger golf team was going through a “learning experience” as they looked to find their place among the nation’s best teams. But experts noted the improvement during the course of the year when LSU was in position to win again. They also noticed the recruiting class that Bahnsen and assistant Alexis Rather were bringing in and quickly put LSU back into the pre-season top 25 at No. 24. The young Lady Tigers are now an experienced group ready to combine with two freshmen to march LSU back to the NCAA Championship event.
Returnees Lyndsey Gahm is one of two seniors on this year’s LSU team, coming off a junior season when she averaged 74.34, second on the team. She finished in fifth with an even par 216 in the Liz Murphey NCAA Fall Preview and finished the season with four consecutive top 16 finishes, including an 11th place finish at the Southeastern Conference Championship and a tie for 14th place finish at the NCAA Women’s West Regional after shooting a 4-over 217. Gahm had nine rounds of par or under on the year for LSU and had a good summer as well, rallying on the final day to win for the second year in a row, the Kentucky Women’s Open championship.
Ali Lucas joined the team as a junior last year after two years at LouisianaMonroe and Lucas proved a solid part of the LSU lineup that could provide some reliable rounds during the course of the tournament. The Crowley, La., native averaged 76.42 for the season. Lucas posted a par 72 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate and had a 1-under 71 in the LSU Tiger Golf Classic to help LSU to its third place finish. Lucas also won the Collegiate Players Tour event this summer in Baton Rouge at Santa Maria Golf Course. Junior Madelene Sagstrom has had two strong years at LSU, including earning first-team All-SEC honors this past year, averaging 73.59. The native of Sweden, who played for her country this past summer in the European Women’s Amateur Team Championship, had four top 10’s, including back-to-back second place finishes. Sagstrom finished at even par 213 in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and followed it up with a 5-over 221 at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic. Sagstrom had a career best low aggregate round of 4-under 67 in the Rucker and posted 4-under 68s at the Alamo Invitational and on the LSU home course, the University Club. Sophomore Nadine Dreher, who led Austria to a second-place finish in the Women’s European Amateur, averaged 77.10 in her first freshman season, again learning all about women’s college golf and providing key scores for the team total. Dreher posted a 5-over 221 for a 16th place finish in her best outing in the Rebel Intercollegiate.

Elise Bradley from Mandeville took home third behind Lucas at the CPT event in Baton Rouge. Bradley averaged 77.23 strokes per round, playing in 26 of the possible 29 rounds. She posted a 13th place finish at 2-over par at a course she’s familiar with – English Turn – in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate and then followed it up with a 14-place finish in LSU’s runnerup effort at the Darius Rucker.
Newcomers LSU’s recruiting class features two star golfers with outstanding credentials entering their freshman year. Carly Ray Goldstein enters as one of the more decorated junior golfers to come to LSU as far as pre-college wins, having recorded her 100th win of her career this past summer. Goldstein won the 2012 Class 2A Individual State High School championship and was named Miss Florida Golf. Her state championship win earned her a spot in “Faces In The Crowd” in Sports Illustrated. Having played golf since she was eight, Goldstein brings a winning style of play to the LSU program that gives her a chance to compete for a possible starting spot right away. Denmark has sent National Team member Caroline Nistrup to join the Tiger troops and she has a strong amateur individual and team record. A member of the Danish National Team since 2007, she comes to LSU as the third ranked player in Denmark with three wins in 2012 and 2013 combined and 10 top 10
placements. She has represented Denmark five times in the European Team Championships, including this past year when her country finished second.
The Schedule Coach Bahnsen has put together a strong schedule again this year and of course the highlight will be the annual home event, the LSU Tiger Golf Classic, March 21-23. This tournament has developed into an annual event filled with hospitality (thanks to the ultra-successful annual college-am on the day prior to the tournament) and exciting competition over the testing University Club layout. Country music and women’s golf is becoming a gathering point and LSU will take part in two tournaments sponsored by top stars – The Toby Keith Foundation’s Schooner Fall Classic in October and the prestigious Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in March. Last year, LSU had one of its best tournaments in the Rucker, finishing second in the event. LSU will play a second tournament in the state to open the spring schedule, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in February. That event is played at the former home of the PGA team, English Turn Golf and Country Club. The learning experience of 2012-13 is ready to start a campaign of success in 2013-14. The goal is simple – improve each and every day – on the way to the NCAA Championships. Coaches Bahnsen and Rather are excited about what lies ahead and so are the players. Let the season begin!

2012-2013 LSU WOMEN’S GOLF
SEASON
REVIEW The 2012-13 women’s golf season proved to have some very good moments for the LSU program as the young team learned the things that can happen in the college golf season, lessons that will carry over to make the 2013-14 season even more successful for the Lady Tiger Golf Program.
THE FALL Junior Lindsay Gahm was the first to crack the top 10 on the season, shooting an even par 216 in the second tournament of the year at the Liz Murphey NCAA Fall Preview in Athens, Ga. Gahm had rounds of 73-72-71 to finish in a tie for fifth. Sophomore Madelene Sagstrom posted the first of back-to-back top 10s in the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational with a 2-over 218 (74-72-72). She followed that up in the final event of the fall, the Alamo Invitational with rounds of 73-72 and a 4-under 68 to shoot 3-under 213 to finish in a tie for fifth. The Lady Tigers as a team finished eighth, but posted its best 54-hole total of the fall at 17-over par 881 (291297-293).
THE SPRING The spring golf season saw the Lady Tigers again on the improve taking sixth in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at 16-over. Sagstrom and freshman Elise Bradley both shot 2-over 146 to tie for 13th place. LSU made its first appearance in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and the Lady Tigers had their best team finish of second place at 28-over par, just four shots behind winner Alabama. Sagstrom was right on the verge of her first collegiate title after an impressive second round of 67, finishing second at even par 213.

2013-2014 WOMEN’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE
LSU was again in the thick of the competition in its own LSU Tiger Golf Classic, finishing third to wire-to-wire winner Arkansas. Sagstrom and Gahm had great showing on the tough University Club layout as Sagstrom tied for second at 5-over 221 (78-68-75) while Gahm tied for 12 at 10-over 226. For Gahm, it was the start of a strong string of top 16 finishes as she finished in a tie for 16th (as did Nadine Dreher) at the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate, 11th in the SEC Championships and 14th at 4-over par in the NCAA West Regional (78-70-69 – 217). The Lady Tigers in post-season play would finish seventh on a very difficult layout in Birmingham for the Southeastern Conference championship and would miss advancing to the NCAA championships after a 12th place finish in the NCAA West Regional.
HONORS Madelene Sagstrom had one of the best stroke averages in the Southeastern Conference at 73.59, nearly matching her stroke average of her freshman season. She earned first-team All-SEC honors from the league coaches. Sagstrom had six top 20 finishes and three top five finishes. Gahm, who also had six top 20 finishes, averaged 74.34. Two Lady Tigers – Dreher and Ali Lucas – were named Women’s Golf Coaches Association Scholar Athletes for their efforts in the classroom during the year. .

Lindsay Gahm just missed a top 10 in the SECs with a tie for 11th placing at 13-over par (74-78-77 -- 229). Top Teams 1. Alabama 2. Georgia 3. South Carolina 4. Vanderbilt 5. Kentucky 5. LSU shot a 12-over 296 to finish the 54-hole event over the Stanford University Golf Course at 45-over par 897. Lindsay Gahm finished second with back-to-back under par rounds of 70 and 69 to finish at 4-over 217 (78-70-69) to finish in a tie for 14th.

CHAMPIONSHIPS The Southeastern Conference has continuted to show its leadership in the intergration of athletic competition and higher education. Since its formation in 1933, the SEC has achieved both stature and stability by designating governing/voting power to the presidents of the member institutions. They have determined the policies of the conference and through the years this involvement has been the principal source of strength in the evolution of the SEC. Intercollegiate athletics encountered many challenges in the 1990s and the SEC provided guidance. In 1993, the member institutions adopted The Principles of Gender Equity. Committed to increasing the quantity and quality of women’s athletic opportunities, each school provides at least two more women’s intercollegiate programs than the number of men’s. SEC schools began athletic competition over 100 years ago as members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized as the Southeastern

Conference at the annual Southern Conference meeting in 1932. Charter members of the new conference were Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU , Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Sewanee, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. In the 1979-80 academic year, SEC championships for women were recognized in basketball, tennis and volleyball. The following year golf, gymnastics, swimming and track and field were added. Arkansas and South Carolina joined the league in 1992 and in 2012-13 the league expanded to 14 teams with the addition of new members Texas A&M and Missouri. The SEC currently regulates nine men’s sports and 11 women’s sports. The women’s sports are volleyball, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track (cross country, indoor, outdoor) and volleyball.

2014 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
LSU POSTED BACK-TO-BACK THIRD PLACE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP FINISHES IN 2010 (TOP) AND 2011 (BOTTOM).
LSU CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY The LSU Lady Tigers will look to go back to the NCAA Championship event in 2014 after failing to advance from the regional round in 2013. LSU had its best national championship finishes in 2011 and 2012 taking home third place both years. In 2012, the Lady Tigers were just two shots out of the title. The regional sites for the 2014 Championships will again be conducted over three different golf courses -- East: SouthWood Golf Club, Tallahassee, Fla. (Florida State University); Central: Karsten Creek Golf Club, Stillwater, Okla. (Oklahoma State University): and, West: Tumble Creek at Suncadia Resort; Roslyn, Wash. (University of Washington). The regionals are from May 8-10. A total of 24 teams and six individuals are seeded into each regional. The eight lowest scoring teams, as well as the two lowest individuals not on those eight qualifying teams will advance from each regional to the NCAA Women’s Championships at The Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., May 20-23.
Harris, Duncan and Megan McChrystal are the three LSU players who played in the championships all four years of their careers. Harris made it on four teams from 1998 to 2001, while Duncan qualified on three teams and once individually from 1999-2002. McChrystal’s four years (2008-11) included three team appearances, including assisting in the 2011 team’s first of back-to-back third place finishes. Tessa Teachman and Jacqueline Hedwall are the latest to join the group of LSU players who participated in three NCAA Championships (2009, 2011, 2012). Kristi Coats (1990, 1991, 1992), Caroline Martens (2006, 2008, 2009) and Amalie Valle (2008, 2009, 2011) are the three other golfers with three NCAA Championships appearances. Highlighting this decade were third place team finishes in both 2011 and 2012 and the individual championship by freshman Austin Ernst in 2011 when she closed with a 6-under 66 that included a hole-in -one.
LSU has made 12 team appearances in the NCAA Championships since they began in 1982. The Lady Tigers were in that first event in Palo Alto, Calif., when LSU finished 16th. The Lady Tigers would return in 1986 when LSU, led by Player of the Year Jenny Lidback, helped the Tigers to a ninth-place finish. Lidback finished tied for 17th. LSU’s longest championship run started in 1986, when the Three Amigas (Ashley Winn, Laura Moore and Michelle Louviere) took the Lady Tigers to top 10-finishes in 1996 (8th) and 1998 (5th). Louviere finished tied for 19th in 1986 and Ashley Winn tied for 15th. The Tigers posted 10th-place finishes in 1999 and 2000 and a 12th place finish in 2001 on teams led by Katy Harris and Meredith Duncan. Duncan played the last 54 holes in 2-under par after opening with a 10-over 82 to finish in a tie for seventh place in 2000 and Harris shot a 1-under 287 to finish in a tie for third in LSU’s appearance in 2001.
Since 1993, to get to the NCAA Division I Championships, teams and individuals must go through the NCAA Regional Tournaments. LSU has hosted the regional on three occasions (1993, 2002, 2007). LSU has advanced to the regional round of NCAA post-season play since that first tournament in 1993 every year but 1994 and 2003. Regionals are make-or-break tournaments that reward the teams playing the best over those 54 holes. In 2009, LSU used a chip-in birdie by Alexis Rather on the first hole of sudden death to go to the Championships, but in 2010, one shot meant the difference between eighth and ninth place as LSU missed a chance to go back again. LSU won its first regional title in 2012, capturing the West Regional in Erie, Colo., en route to its second consecutive third place finish at the Championships.

BAHNSEN
KAREN BAHNSEN TIMELINE A COACH’S TIMELINE Karen Bahnsen • Entering her 30 Season As Head Coach FALL 1984 – Coach Buddy Alexander, coach of both teams at LSU, relinquishes control of the women’s team and Karen Bahnsen, the first recruit of the program in 1979, is named the head coach. SPRING 1985 – Coach Bahnsen records her first team win at the LSU-Lou Besson Invitational in Baton Rouge. 1985-86 – The Lady Tigers win five times as a team, still the best single season team-wise for wins. Jenny Lidback transfers to LSU for her senior season, wins seven tournaments and is named POY … LSU earns its second NCAA berth, the first under Coach Bahnsen, finishing ninth. 1991 – Kristi Coats captures the school’s first individual SEC title in women’s golf, winning at Lexington, Ky., with a score of 224 … She would go on to make the NCAA Championships as an individual player and finish third with a 5-over score of 293. Coats would win six titles for LSU between 1990 & 1993, still the second most wins in school history. 1992 – Karen Bahnsen hosts the SEC Women’s Golf Championships for the first time at Santa Maria and LSU would win its first ever league championship, posting a score of 892 … The members of the winning team included: Coats, Jennifer Vernon, Julie Rigazio, Page Oeser and Laurie Robbins.
1994-98 – Prior to the 1994-95 season, Coach Bahnsen pulled off a recruiting coup that brought top recruits Ashley Winn of West Monroe, Michelle Louviere of Lafayette and Laura Moore of Diamondhead, Miss. … They would combine to get LSU nine team wins over four years, two runnerup SEC finishes and two top eight finishes in the NCAA Championships … Winn would win three titles over her career and Moore would score one title ... Then New Orleans Times-Picayune golf writer Dave LeGarde nicknamed the trio “The Three Amigas.”
1999 – LSU was back in the NCAA Championships for the first time in back-toback years, finishing 10th.
2000 – LSU finished second in the SECs and easily advanced to another championship round, this time in Sunriver, Ore. … LSU would finish 10th again … Sophomore Meredith Duncan rallied from 82 in the first round to play the last 38 holes in 2-under par to finish in a tie for seventh place … Senior Lisette Lee would become LSU’s first winner of the prestigious LPGA Diana Shore Award.
2001-02 – The Tigers in 2001 would again finish second in the SEC championships and advanced to the NCAA Championships where they finished 12th … Katy Harris became the second LSU golfer to finish third in the national championships shooting 1-under for 72 holes … In the summer, Meredith Duncan, won the United States Women’s Amateur … She would earn three All-American honors, the 1992 Diana Shore Award and Duncan and Harris would finish their careers as the only LSU players to play in the NCAA Championships all four years.
2002 – Since 1998, the Lady Tigers had the luxury of their own home course at the University Club. Now in 2002, the Golf House opened on the team practice range providing both teams at LSU dressing room, coaches’ offices, meeting space and added all-weather practice facilities that would greatly benefit the programs.
2006, 2008, 2009 – LSU makes appearances in the NCAA Women’s Championships.
2008- Coach Bahnsen inducted in NGCA Hall of Fame. 2011 – LSU freshman Austin Ernst wins the first individual championship for LSU in women’s golf the first by any LSU golfer, male or female, in 70 years … Ernst has a hole-in-one early in her final round en route to a 6-under 66 … LSU with Ernst, Megan McChrystal, Jacqueline Hedwall, Tessa Teachman and Amalie Valle, finished third in the team event, the Lady Tigers best ever finish. 2012 – LSU would make it back-to-back third place team finishes, missing by just two strokes as Tessa Teachman finishes her career with a strong third place finish … Teachman, Austin Ernst, Madelene Sagstrom, Lindsay Gahm and Jacqueline Hedwall made up the lineup for this finish.

CLUB
The LSU men’s and women’s golf teams have had the privilege of calling the University Club home for some 15 years. After undergoing a nine-month renovation in 2009-10, the home of LSU’s nationally-ranked programs features a renown par-72 layout that serves as an impressive showpiece for generations to come. The course at the University Club was re-designed under the guidance of LSU legend and PGA Tour pro David Toms and noted golf course architect Jim Lipe, who designed the original University Club in 1998. The course is carved into nearly 300 acres of land just seven miles south of the LSU campus on Nicholson Drive. The club most recently received rave reviews as the host of the 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Regional, marking the first time in the illustrious history of the LSU men’s golf program that the Tigers served as hosts to an NCAA men’s postseason tournament on its home course. Overall, it was the third regional (2 women) to have been played on the LSU home course. The challenging 18-hole course at University Club can play to 7,700 yards from its championship tees and feature wide fairways bordered by pine hammocks and native grasses, in addition to 2,000 feet of bulkhead. Four additional sets of tees are also available for players of all ages and skill levels. In addition, the lake areas have been increased by 110,000 cubic yards in total and more than 500 trees were added throughout the course to provide a challenging test of golf for anyone playing the University Club. Not only that, but the course now has one of the most impressive finishing holes in golf as the 18th hole features a new championship “Tiger” tee with a beautiful six-foot high wood bulkhead. The lake was expanded near the green, where an additional 180 feet of bulkhead was also added. In the summer of 2011, the members of the University Club voted the 18th hole as the course’s “Signature Hole.” The course was built on land donated to the Tiger Athletic Foundation and subsequently leased to The University Club. University Club’s development was having a premier course that would provide a place for TAF members to play, as well as a home for the men’s and women’s golf teams at LSU. The course opened for members on Oct. 22, 1998. The swimming and tennis facility adjacent to the course opened in the summer of 2000. The surrounding housing development continues to grow, adding to the beauty of the area surrounding the golf course. The Tiger Athletic Foundation is a private, non-profit corporation that serves as the fund-raising and development arm of the LSU athletics department. Each year, the TAF underwrites scholarship and academics awards, as well as capital development projects for LSU athletics.

HOLE-BY-HOLE In its original state, through the summer of 2009, the U-Club played at just over 7,200 yards from its Tiger Tees and just over 6,000 yards for the early LSU Women’s Golf Classics. Now the course measures out at a hefty 7,700 yards from the Tiger Tees and an impressive 6,602 yards from member tees. Here are some characteristics of the course and pictures of the holes (tees are listed in the following order: Tiger-Scratch-Member-Senior-Ladies/Jrs.)
No. 1 – Par 4 – 456-402-385-349-274 A championship tee lengthened the hole some 50 yards. The former waste bunker on the left side was replaced by an area of pine hammock and several trees planted in the right rough. On the approach shot, players have to watch for a grass hollow that replaced greenside bunkers.
No. 2
No. 2 – Par 4 – 447-435-382-324-312 A good hole that didn’t need a lot of change. Two bunkers tempt those looking to carry a drive and the raised left side of the green creates a top shelf pin placement.
No. 3 – Par 5 – 673-632-578-542-496 Can you say long? The No.1 handicap hole on the course had 53 yards added to its Tiger distance and features native grass areas down both sides of a fairway that was much easier to hit. The water has been expanded off the tee, replacing the old fairway bunker. The elevated green makes a more demanding approach.

No. 4 – Par 4 – 375-341-315-288-231 This was a short par 4 that some long hitters could put the ball at the edge of the green with an accurate drive. That task is a little tougher as the left side water now extends into the fairway. The green has been extended back for an addition hole location.
No. 5 – Par 3 – 189-172-155-137-96 This picturesque par 3 loses the wide bail-out area on the right as you look from the tee. The lake extends closer to the green making accuracy everything from the tee box.
No. 6 – Par 5 – 573-554-522-478-450 This hole has a whole new identity with a new lake down the entire length of the hole. A creek also crosses the fairway, directly in the landing zone of most hitters. The creek extends into a pond at the green making the approach shot more demanding.

THE UNIVERSITY CLUB No. 7 – Par 4 – 471-457-431-401-349 The beginning of a tough stretch of three holes to close the front nine. Native grasses replaced the wetlands in front of the tee box. A fairway bunker has been added and a grass hollow is now left of the green.

No. 8 – Par 3 – 222-188-166-130-107 The long par-3 eighth has undergone a complete renovation. The tee box has been reshaped and elevated some seven feet. The water on the hole has expanded to the front left of the green. The putting surface has been reshaped with three new bunkers.
No. 9 – par 4 – 486-467-443-394-345 The second longest par 4 on the course has several trees down the right side. Waste bunkers have been replaced by pine hammock areas and native grass comes into play on the left side. The result is a tighter landing area to try to place a drive.

No. 10 – Par 4 – 484-444-402-354-327 Golfers will notice the trees down the left side that give the hole definition. The approach shot will have to avoid pine hammocks short and right of the green.
No. 11 – Par 5 – 567-557-516-484-429 This long par 5 has native dunes on the left side. A fairway bunker in the middle of the fairway that is 110 yards out from the green will cause approach problems. The water down the right has been expended close to the newly-elevated green, placing a premium on getting the ball to the hole.
No. 12 – Par 4 – 422-410-368-350-307 Several trees will cause problem with errant drives on both sides of the hole. A new sand bunker has replaced a grass bunker in front of the green. An accurate tee shot is a must.

No. 13 – Par 3 – 209-179-151-141-119 This has always been one of the best holes on the course. Some trees have been added and the green expanded to add hole locations. A straightforward tee shot is necessary with severe bunkers on the left side of the green.
No. 14 – Par 4 – 460-448-404-351-317 One of the more intimidating holes on the course with an uncompromising dogleg left leaving little room for error off the tee. Water has been extended into the fairway on the left side and pine hammocks down the right. The green has been expanded to the back and to the right.
No. 15 – Par 4 – 365-347-327-287-244 This hole probably had some of the biggest changes on the golf course. There is a new elevated tee box and the right side of the hole features mounding with native grasses. The fairway has been reshaped and bunkers added on the left. The hole has the potential to be played as a drivable par 4.

THE UNIVERSITY CLUB No. 16 – Par 3 – 253-215-167-144-117 This hole now could play 250 yards over water from the Tiger tee as opposed to the old distance of 188 yards. The existing green has been expanded to the right to allow more hole locations. Water has been added to the right of the green.
No. 17 – Par 5 – 551-528-501-452-443 The hole has several trees down the right side of the entire hole. The water on the left expands toward the fairway approaching the hole. A lake at the green makes an accurate approach imperative. Long hitters can reach the green in two.
No. 18 – Par 4 – 497-458-389-372-340 The U-Club’s signature hole is one of the best finishing holes in the state. Native grasses are both right and left on this dogleg left hole. The lake which has always been in play off the tee has been expanded near the green, replacing the left greenside bunker. There is 180 feet of bulkhead bordering the left side of the green.

THE 2014 LSU TIGER
GOLF CLASSIC THE HISTORY This year’s LSU Golf Classic will mark the 32nd consecutive spring that the LSU women’s golf team has hosted a tournament that has grown to be one of the most prestigious events of the women’s golf schedule. The Classic moved to the LSU University Club in 2000 and has been played there every year except 2010 when U-Club renovations moved the event to English Turn in New Orleans, where the Lady Tigers hosted the event with Tulane. But the tournament roots go back to the local Fairwood Country Club and its unique membership that not only hosted and ran the tournament, but served as uncles and aunts for many of the teams that came each year. Club members hosted teams at their houses every year, allowing teams to save money in the days when women’s college golf wasn’t funded as it is today. Dinners were provided by the club along with member entertainment and some of the nation’s top golf teams and players came to participate. Jenny Lidback, who would go on to win a major championship on the LPGA tour, lost the tournament title in a playoff while at TCU and in 1986 would win the title as an LSU Lady Tiger. Arizona’s Marisa Baena had her coming-out party as a freshman dominating the competition. In the final LSU-Fairwood event in 1999, Duke put on the course a lineup that would become one of the most dominating in the nation. Dan Brooks brought his Duke team back to Baton Rouge to win the 2007 renewal on the way to winning the East Regional at the U-Club, leading to a third straight NCAA Championship. LSU’s annual golf tournament has not only proven to be an important event on the women’s collegiate circuit, but it has proven to be a community event as seen by the hundreds of volunteers who take part each year. It’s those volunteers that the LSU golf program salutes for their tireless efforts that make the LSU event the success it is. Also thanks to the University Club for being a special home for LSU Golf and to the TAF for their work to continue to make the U-Club a strong test of golf.
THE RITE OF SPRING AT LSU’S U-CLUB The rite of spring known as the LSU Golf Classic returns to the redesigned University Club, March 22-24, 2014. The Lady Tigers and the tournament returned in 2011 to their home University Club after a year away to allow a complete renovation of the course. This will mark the 32nd year the Lady Tigers have hosted a tournament, the 31st in Baton Rouge. LSU has played the tournament (with the exception of 2010) at the U-Club every year since 2000 as well as hosting two NCAA regionals and an SEC Championship in that time. This year’s LSU Golf Classic has drawn another strong field of 15 teams as the Lady Tigers will host Kentucky, Baylor, UTSA, UNCW, Tulane, SMU, Notre Dame, UCF, Missouri, Denver, Arkansas (defending champions), TCU, ULM and Purdue.
Arkansas (2011, 2013), TCU (1982, 1983) and UNCW (2003) are previous winners of LSU women’s golf events. LSU has won its tournament seven times (1985, ‘86, ‘95, ‘98, 2000, ‘01, 05)

VICE CHANCELOR/DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Joe Alleva
LSU
LSU Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Joe Alleva continues to bring unprecedented national recognition to LSU as Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics. Under Alleva’s leadership, LSU enjoys one of the country’s premier athletics programs with success on and off the field of competition. Now in his sixth year at LSU, Alleva is dedicated to athletic and academic excellence, and is committed to providing the opportunities and the resources necessary for student-athletes to excel in competition, in the classroom and in the community. Alleva joined the LSU family on April 4, 2008, after a highly successful tenure as director of athletics at Duke University for 10 years. Alleva’s role at LSU was further expanded in August 2009 when vice chancellor was added to his title by the LSU Board of Supervisors. It is the first time in school history that the director of athletics has also held a vice chancellor position. Alleva is currently serving a five-year term on the prestigious NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee, reinforcing his position as one of the most respected athletic administrators in the country. Upon his arrival at LSU, Alleva unveiled a strategic master plan for the LSU athletics program -- “LSU: Thru and True” -- to ensure the advancement and future of LSU Athletics as an exemplary program. The central mission of the plan is to create an environment for student-athletes to reach their ultimate potential, prepare them to be champions in life and to set out goals and values for the entire athletics program. Alleva’s vision will keep LSU among the nation’s leaders in athletic facilities. He launched an aggressive fund-raising campaign to replace several hundred windows in Tiger Stadium that were in disrepair, and a new coating to the facade of the structure has given the old stadium new life. A renovated gating system on the west side of the stadium debuted in the fall of 2012 to include a plaza that celebrates LSU’s football national championships and recognition walls that honor Tiger All-Americans. A new plaza will open on the north end of the stadium in the fall of 2013, further enriching the experience of visitors to the LSU campus. A new lighting system was installed prior to last season that turns the upper archways of the north end of the stadium purple and gold and lights the iconic “LSU” on the stadium’s north scoreboard. In addition, “Tiger Stadium” in 10-foot tall illuminated letters sits just below the west upper deck facing Nicholson Drive. Also in the fall of 2012, LSU began construction on an expansion of the South End Zone of the stadium -- a project that will add premium seating, general public seating and two state-of-the-art video boards -- continuing an effort to augment one of the most iconic venues in all of college sports. The project will be completed in time for the start of the 2014 football season. Under Alleva’s direction, LSU’s worldrenowned track and field program received a state-of the-art running surface in 2010 when a new track was installed in Bernie Moore Track Stadium and extensive renovations to the LSU Soccer Stadium were completed in the fall of 2011. Alleva directed a major renovation to the University Club golf course that was completed in September 2010 and allows the LSU men’s and women’s golf teams to compete on one of the most challenging courses in the country. The renovated course helped prepare Tiger golfers John Peterson and Austin Ernst, respectively, to win 2011 NCAA men’s and women’s individual championships, marking the first
time both titles were claimed by players from the same school. The LSU men’s team in 2013 played host to an NCAA Regional for the first time in the school’s illustrious golf history. Future plans include a new gymnastics practice facility, a new tennis complex featuring indoor and outdoor courts, and a state-of-the-art Nutrition Center for Student-Athletes, a facility that will house full-time chefs and nutritionists and provide the best dietary selections for all Fighting Tiger competitors. LSU’s prominence was evident in the final 2012-13 Learfield Sports Director’s Cup standings that recognize the nation’s best athletic programs, as the Tigers finished in the Top 20 for the eighth consecutive year. The year was highlighted by another 10-win season and bowl appearance for the Fighting Tiger football team, which recorded a double-digit victory total for the sixth time in eight years. The men’s basketball program was rejuvenated by first-year coach Johnny Jones, who directed the Tigers to a 19-12 mark while placing LSU back into consideration for a postseason berth. Women’s basketball continued its rise under second-year coach Nikki Caldwell, who guided the Lady Tigers to LSU’s first Sweet 16 berth in five years. The 2013 Fighting Tiger baseball team established a school record for victories with 57 and earned the school’s 16th College World Series appearance while capturing SEC Western Division and SEC Tournament titles. The softball squad won the SEC West and played host to an NCAA Regional in Tiger Park before record crowds. The LSU gymnastics team reached the prestigious Super Six for the third time in six seasons, and the women’s track team, led by Bowerman Award winner and national sprint champion Kimberlyn Duncan, placed fourth in the final NCAA Outdoor standings. But the 2012-13 year was about more than just athletic success. Living up to Alleva’s mantra of “competition, classroom, community,” LSU studentathletes logged more than 4,475 hours in community service work across 20 sports through LSU’s Geaux Givers program. And a total of 89 proud Tigers received their degrees from the University during LSU commencement ceremonies in December and May. The Tigers in 2011-12 finished fourth in both the men’s and women’s Capital One Cup competition that identifies athletic excellence. LSU was one of only two schools in the country – and the only one in the SEC -- to rank in the top four in both categories. Eighteen of the Tigers’ 20 varsity sports participated in NCAA postseason
competition in 2011-12. The year was highlighted by the football team’s undefeated regular season, an SEC championship and an appearance in the BCS National Championship Game. The Lady Tiger track and field team captured the SEC championship while the LSU softball squad advanced to the Women’s College World Series. The Fighting Tiger baseball team won the 2012 SEC championship, and LSU led the nation in attendance for the 17th-straight season. The 2011-12 season marked the first time in school history that LSU won the SEC title in both football and baseball in the same athletic year. Outstanding performances of the 2010-11 athletic season included the exploits of the Fighting Tiger football squad that posted an 11-2 mark – including a Cotton Bowl victory – and finished the season ranked No. 8 in the nation. The year also featured Top 5 national finishes both indoors and outdoors by the men’s and women’s track and field teams. In 2008-09, all 20 LSU sports competed in NCAA postseason play for the first time in school history and the Tiger baseball team won the national championship. LSU ranked second among Southeastern Conference teams in the Learfield Director’s Cup All-Sports standings and finished in the Top 20 for the sixth year in a row. With a strong commitment to academics, Alleva ensures that the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes is a first-class facility that provides student-athletes the resources necessary for success in the classroom and personal development. The facility was recently enhanced by the addition of a media training center that gives student-athletes valuable assistance in improving their communications skills. And with a strong emphasis on community service and outreach programs, the implementation under Alleva’s direction of the “Geaux Givers” program fosters a relationship between the local community and LSU student-athletes, who regularly participate in philanthropic events. In addition, Alleva has bolstered the department’s L-Club program to reach out and connect with former student-athletes. Alleva oversees a staff of outstanding coaches and he has made critical additions to LSU’s coaching staff in recent years. He hired former LSU guard Johnny Jones in April 2012 to breathe new life and enthusiasm into the men’s basketball program and last year added Julia Sell as the new women’s tennis coach. In 2011, he lured the dynamic Nikki Caldwell to LSU to coach the Lady Tiger basketball team and then hired Beth Torina to direct the Tiger softball program, both of whom
immediately returned their respective programs to NCAA postseason success. Alleva is an innovator with bold ideas that benefit not only LSU but all of Greater Baton Rouge. He has been instrumental in the planning of the Bayou Country Superfest, a two-day country music concert and festival held in Tiger Stadium each spring. The event attracts nearly 100,000 visitors to the LSU campus and makes a tremendous economic impact upon the local community. Alleva has served on numerous national committees throughout his career including the Football Bowl Certification Committee, the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet and several Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference committees. He became director of athletics at Duke in 1998 and his impressive tenure there propelled the University into the ranks of America’s top all-around collegiate programs. Among his outstanding list of accomplishments includes the greatest 10-year period in Duke Athletics, winning more ACC and NCAA championships than in any other decade in school history. Alleva, whose hometown is Suffern, N.Y., majored in Finance at Lehigh University and received his bachelor’s degree in 1975. While at Lehigh, Alleva was the quarterback of the football team and team captain in 1974. Alleva also played on the Lehigh baseball team. He served as a graduate assistant football coach and earned an MBA in 1976. While at Duke, Alleva played a key role in Durham’s community sports scene. He started Little League Baseball in Durham more than 20 years ago, and also began the American Legion baseball program. He is a member of the North Carolina American Legion Hall of Fame, Suffern High School Hall of Fame and the Rockland County Hall of Fame. Alleva and his wife, Annie, have three children, J.D., Jeff, and Jenny. Joe and Annie recently welcomed their first grandchild, Harper, the daughter of Jenny and husband Kyle Young.

BILYEU GOLF
PRACTICE FACILITY In April 2011, the LSU Golf House was given a well deserved renaming to the Mary and Woody Bilyeu Golf Practice Facility. The Tiger Athletic Foundation paid tribute to the couple for their generous donation that helped redo the University Club, making the course more challenging for collegiate golfers. Playing on the course helped the LSU women to their best ever third place finishes in both the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Championships. “The generosity of the Bilyeu’s has been tremendous, and they are going to make people’s dreams come true for years and years to come,” TAF Senior Vice President Rick Perry said. “There will be young people with the opportunity to chase their dream, not only to be professional golfers but to get the opportunity to come to LSU and get an education. The facility features office and storage areas for both teams, indoor hitting bays, computer analysis stations and meeting and locker room space for both teams as well as graphic displays of the history of both golf programs through the years. The outdoor hitting area is expansive where players can work on all facets of their game.
