LSU

Season Preview

Coming up in 2016 After showing tremendous progression from year one to year two, the future certainly looks bright for the LSU beach volleyball team, who is now in its third year of competition and its first year as an NCAA-sanctioned sport. The Lady Tigers are coming off a year where they improved their win total by eight games, and they return all but one starter from last year’s starting pairs. The incoming recruiting class looks to provide more depth, consisting of five exceptionally talented freshmen who are expected to contend for early playing time. LSU is also ranked for the first time, coming in at No. 19 in the DiG Magazine Collegiate Poll. The Lady Tigers also boast two CCSA Preseason All-Conference representatives in sophomore Mandi Orellana and senior Katie Lindelow, as well as senior Cati Leak, who received 2016 CCSA Preseason Watch List recognition. With all the improvement demonstrated over the last two years, associate head coach Russell Brock hopes to ‘‘exceed expectations’’ this year in order to make 2016 a very special season. “We talked about exceeding expectations,’’ said Brock. ‘‘That was our theme this year. For the last couple of years, people didn’t really know what we were about, and since then we’ve been improving, beating people and receiving (preseason) recognition in being ranked. It’s a step in the right direction. Now, people know who we are, and we want to be better than they expect us to be.’’

THE JUNIORS

THE SENIORS

THE FRESHMEN

Katie Lindelow, Helen Boyle, and Cati Leak will anchor an experienced senior class that has played with the team since its inception. As the most seasoned players on the roster, this class is looking to keep up their dominating play among the top three pairings for the team. Victoria Boraski and transfer Roxanne McVey are also important pieces who can play pivotal roles, providing an abundance of depth to an already stacked roster. ‘‘We’ve known from the beginning that they were going to be the cornerstone of our program as those blockers who have been involved from the get go who are super talented and driven,’’ said associate head coach Russell Brock. ‘‘They can compete with any program across the country. We’ve added more pieces around them to allow them to be more successful, and this is the year where we’’ll see how good we can be.’

3

2016 LSU BEACH VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

LSU features two juniors in Callan Molle and Emma Hiller who wil look to continue their impressive performances from last year. Molle has won 10 of her last 11 matches with Leak. Hiller compiled nine wins alongside her partner, sophomore Riley Young. “They’ve already been through two seasons, and they’ve had to carry the load from the standpoint of being beach-only players from the beginning,” said Brock. “It’s important for them to embrace that role and lead well, and we expect them to do that.”

THE SOPHOMORES The sophomore class proved to be invaluable last year as Carly Morris, Mandi Orellana, Cheyenne Wood and Riley Young all became starters by seasons end. Lilly Kessler will look to rebound this season after receiving playing time at the two spot earlier in the year before suffering a season-ending illness. Taylor Wilson earned her first career win last year in straight sets against New Orleans. “We missed (Lilly) last year being out of the lineup, and she’s going to be another player who will contribute,’’ said Brock. ‘‘For all the rest of the second-year players, they’ve had a year under their belt to interact and be involved , and we expect more from them this year.”

While they have yet to play a collegiate beach match, the LSU freshmen class is incredibly talented, and they are expected to push for early playing time, despite the Lady Tigers returning all but one starter from last season. Ashley Allmer, Megan Davenport, Jeni Clark, Addison Hoven, and Maddie Ligon will all be primed for breakout seasons when given the opportunity to compete. “We’ve known from the beginning that they’re a good, strong group, and we would need for them to contribute if we’re going to improve,” said Brock. ‘‘There’s no doubt that they’re really talented, and they’ve bought in to what we need them to do and be better and play this game at the level the game needs to be played.”

LSU

“My goal for every studentathlete who competes on my team is to allow and help them develop into a successful person in all aspects of life.”

FRAN FLORY HEAD COACH

LSU Athletics has a great tradition of winning championships, and our volleyball program is built on that tradition. We compete each and every day to “win” in the classroom and on the court. Everything we do brings us one step closer to the ultimate goal of graduating from this great University and the ultimate goal of winning that special championship. We emphasize balance in all aspects of your collegiate career, working to be great on the court, in the classroom and in the community. Success becomes contagious and one area feeds off the next until you are able to truly fulfill your potential. You earn what you get in life and hard work on the court and in the classroom are the first steps toward unlocking that

potential. We have recently added the LSU Leadership Academy to our athletic department. With the implementation of this new program, we have seen our players begin to grow into the true leaders of the future, not just for this university and our program, but for society and within their chosen professions. They are empowered to lead and impact others. We strongly believe in family. Our players, past and present, are tied together for life and will forever be part of our LSU volleyball family. We have all walked the same pathway, and have paved the way for the next student-athletes who have the honor of wearing the purple and gold. Our Alumni events are wonderful experiences for the old and the new. We have the chance to celebrate past Championships and set our sights on future championships. Once a Tiger, always a Tiger.

RUSSELL BROCK ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH

Associate head coach Russell Brock is now in his third season with the LSU beach volleyball team. Last year, Brock helped oversee a team that made drastic improvement from year one to year two. Under Brock’s direction, the Tigers added eight more wins in their second year, posting a 14-9 record in 2015. Brock also coached No. 1 pair Katie Lindelow and Mandi Orellana to the 2015 AVCA Pairs Championship in Gulf Shores. Brock started his career at LSU in 2013 after Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva hired him to help coach the inaugural season for beach volleyball. Brock is a combined 20-19 at LSU in his two years as associate coach. Before his stint at LSU, Brock spent eight seasons with the indoor volleyball program at Rice University. He served as a volunteer coach from 2006 to 2008 before being promoted to assistant coach from 2009, where the Owls totaled 141

wins, two NCAA tournament trips and the program’s first Conference USA championship in 2009. Brock helped in the development of middle blockers. He coached Natalie Bogan and Nancy Cole to AVCA All-American honors, and coached four of the top seven players on Rice’s all-time total blocks list. Prior to Rice University, Brock spent 11 years at Baytown Christian Academy in Texas as the school’s athletic director and operations manager. He coached the girl’s volleyball team and won four Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools state titles. Brock was a stand out athlete at the University of Southern California. He led the program’s all-time record in digs tallying 956, a record he held for 10 years. He also set a NCAA record with 45 matches with 10-plus digs. Brock graduated from USC in 1996 with a B.S. in exercise science. He and his wife, Kristi, have two daughters, Brooklynn, Kaelynn, and one son, Kory.
