INTRODUCTION

NCAA CHAMPIONSIPS & THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE Setting the Standard for Intercollegiate Athletics in Swimming and Diving

Over the course of several decades, the Southeastern Conference has been a constant force in swimming and diving. Last season, Texas A&M earned the highest finish in the SEC, taking third at the 2018 NCAA DI Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships for the second consecutive season. Tennessee also earned a top-10 finish, finishing in eighth. Five other teams manged to finish in the top 25. Geogia finished 12th overall, while Kentucky, Missouri, and Auburn finished 14th, 15th, and 16th, respectively. South Carolina made was the seventh SEC team to crack the top-20, finishing 20th. The conference has placed 103 women’s teams in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships, and the SEC has compiled 251 individual NCAA titles. At the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships, Florida and Georgia earned spots within the top 10 teams at the event, marking the 50th consecutive season in which the SEC has placed at least one men’s team in the top 10. Since 1969, 138 SEC teams have finished in the NCAA’s top 10.

• The SEC has had 11 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships titles: Tennessee - 1978; Florida - 1983 & 1985; Auburn - 1997, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009.

• The SEC has had 14 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships titles: Florida – 1982, 2010; Georgia – 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2013, 2014, 2016; Auburn – 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007.

• 2016 marked the 50th consecutive year that the SEC has had at least one team in the top 10 of the NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships. The SEC has placed a total of 138 teams in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships since 1969.

• With Texas A&M earning the third spot at the 2018 NCAA Championships, an SEC school has finished on the podium in the Championships since 1999.

• SEC athletes in men’s swimming & diving have captured a total of 182 individual NCAA titles.

• Since 1982, the SEC has placed 103 teams in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships. • 251 individual NCAA titles have been captured by SEC athletes.

HIGHLIGHTS

Championships, Celaya-Hernandez led the Tigers to their highest place finish at the NCAA Championships since 2005.

• At SEC Championships, LSU had eight swimmers and divers appear in championship finals for the Tigers.

Lizzie Cui continued to forge her place in LSU women’s diving history. Cui went undefeated in all dual-meet competitions, winning all 10 events she competed in. At the SEC Championships, Cui reached the finals on all three boards, including a silver medal on one-meter.

• Sophomore Juan Celaya-Hernandez continued to show that he is the best men’s diver in school history. The Mexico native broke his own three-meter school record at the Auburn Diving Invitational. He won SEC Championships on both one-meter and platform, as well as a school, Texas A&M pool, and SEC Record on one-meter, scoring 479.10 in the finals, and was named to the All-SEC First-Team.

Cui also earned NCAA All-America Honorable Mention honors on both springboards after finishing 12th on one-meter and 14th on three-meter. Her performances over the course of the season earned her a spot on the All-SEC Second Team.

At the NCAA Championships, Celaya-Hernandez earned NCAA First-Team All-America honors on both springboards after finishing seventh on one-meter and fourth on three-meter. The sophomore also earned NCAA All-America Honorable Mention honors on platform after finishing 15th overall.

• Matthew Phllip made his second appearance at the NCAA Championships, finishing 33rd overall on platform • Junior Harrison Jones broke the school record in the 200-yard butterfly at the SEC Championships to finish tied for fifth. Jones broke his own record a week later at the Texas A&M Last Chance Meet.

As a result, the sophomore was one of five divers to earn All-America honors on all three boards. Scoring every point for the men at the NCAA
