NCAA CHAMPIONSIPS & THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE
Setting the Standard for Intercollegiate Athletics in Swimming and Diving
Over the course of several decades, the Southeastern Conference has been a constant force in swimming and diving.
During the 2023 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, three schools in the SEC took top-10 spots in the final team rankings. Florida, Tennessee, and Auburn finished sixth, seventh, and tenth respectively, with LSU rounding out the top-16. Alongside the three top finishers, Georgia, Texas A&M, Missouri, and Alabama earned enough points to close out the year within the top-20 nationally. LSU’s finish at No. 16 is the second-straight season it has finished in the top-16. The Tigers (Brooks Curry, Carson Paul, Adrian Abadia Garcia) collected six All-American honors from finishing in the top-16 of individual events. To round out the 32 teams that qualified, the SEC also saw the likes of South Carolina and Kentucky compete for the national title.
At the 2023 Women’s NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, Tennessee and Florida earned spots within the top 10 teams at the event. LSU, with graduate transfer Maggie MacNeil leading the way, finished 13th in the country with 112 team points. MacNeil, the national champion in the 50-free, led the Tigers to their best finish at NCAAs since finishing 13th in 1993. On top of the individual national championship, a group of 11 Tigers competed at the NCAA Championships in Knoxville, Tenn, where they earned a total of nine All-American honors across six athletes. LSU and its counterparts like Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Auburn rounded out the top-32.
• 2023 marked the 54th consecutive year that the SEC has had at least one team in the top 10 of the NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships. The SEC has placed a total of 148 teams in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships since 1969. The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a gap year in this trend.
• SEC athletes in men’s swimming & diving have captured a total of 198 individual NCAA titles.
• With Texas A&M earning the third spot at the 2018 NCAA Championships, an SEC school had finished on the podium in the Championships every year since 1999. That streak was broken when Stanford, Cal and Michigan took the top-3 spots in 2019.
• Since 1982, the SEC has placed 110 teams in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships.
• 253 individual NCAA titles have been captured by SEC athletes.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Maggie MacNeil was a part of two historic races for LSU at the 2023 NCAA Championships and the SEC Championships, as she won the 50-free national title (20.79 - NCAA Record) and swam the second leg for the victorious 200-yard free relay team on day two of the SEC meet. MacNeil defeated one of the best swimmers in the country, Gretchen Walsh of Virginia
• In a much anticipated timed final for the 200-free relay, LSU looked to show what they could do on a national stage with strong competitors. MacNeil, alongside Katarina Milutinovich, Peyton Curry, and Michaela de Villiers, not only lowered the school record and bettered their A standard time, but they won gold. The SEC title marked the first time an LSU women’s relay has won an SEC Championship since 1986. It also becomes the first gold medal any Tiger woman has won at the SEC meet since 2015. During the second leg of the event, MacNeil put together the second-fastest 50-free split in history with a 20.44. Her time ended up being the catalyst for Curry and de Villiers to finish it out and clock a time of 1:26.70. MacNeil was named the Female Swimmer of the Meet.
• The LSU women’s historic performance at the 2023 SEC Championships saw MacNeil, Ella Varga, Jenna Bridges, Montserrat Lavenant, and two separate quartets of Tigers earn a total of eight
gold medals. The Tiger women finished in fifth-place, the highest for the program since the 2014-15 season. The team finished with 775 points. At the conclusion of the meet, MacNeil was awarded the Commissioner’s trophy after collecting 96 points and she is the first LSU athlete to win since 1997.
• The LSU men scored all of their points across three athletes and yielded 62.5 points for a 16th finish.
• LSU swimmers and divers combined to break 18 school records in Coach Rick Bishop’s second season. MacNeil broke four individually and was a part of four superior relay times in program history. Additionally Jenna Bridges broke the 500-free and 200-fly marks, Brooks Curry lowered the 200-free time, plus Griffin Curtis (200-back), Mitch Mason (100-breast, 200-breast), Lavenant (Platform), and Varga also broke school records
• At the Women’s NCAA Championship, LSU had 11 representatives with four divers and seven swimmers. Lavenant garnered the highest finish outside of MacNeil’s performance, placing second in the platform dive with a final score of 347.00 - a school record.
• The Tiger men had three represetatives at the 2023 NCAA meet (Brooks Curry, Adrian Abadia Garcia, and Carson Paul). Curry earned three first team All-American honors.
