Dear Friends,
The 2012-13 fiscal year was a time of great change and success for the LSU Foundation. A few highlights from the year were: •
We launched an agressive four-year strategic plan that will ultimately double our fundraising efforts while transforming how we raise money for LSU and significantly growing our endowment.
•
Through the generosity of our donors, we raised more than $30 million, exceeding our goal for this fiscal year by $2 million.
•
Our endowed assets grew from $331 million to $354 million, largely as an outcome of market performance. While the growth is exciting, we recognize the continued importance of increasing our endowment through private giving to provide a perpetual stream of funding for the university.
•
Phyllis M. Taylor announced that she would make a $15 million gift to honor the legacy of Patrick F. Taylor and accelerate the momentum of the $100 million public-private partnership to renovate Patrick F. Taylor Hall and construct a chemical engineering facility. Her generosity kicked off our 2013-14 fiscal year to an exciting start and exemplifies high-impact philanthropy.
Toward the end of the fiscal year, we had the opportunity to meet and begin working with LSU President and Chancellor F. King Alexander. He is a committed partner for us in increasing philanthropic support for LSU, and we look forward to working with him and all of our university colleagues in the year ahead. We are grateful for your generous support, and we take seriously our responsibilities to steward your gifts wisely and to uphold the highest levels of integrity, accountability and transparency. STRATEGIC PLAN In January 2012, the Foundation’s Board of Directors and staff began a collaborative strategic-planning process that included an internal assessment of the organization and external research to benchmark performance and identify best practices. A striking new vision for the LSU Foundation emerged that foregoes the shelter of modest goals, instead recognizing the opportunity to build an extraordinary new level of support for LSU. It is a twofold vision: 1. Increase the amount of total annual fundraising from the current $30 million per year average over the last 10 years to more than $60 million per year by 2016. 2. Increase the LSU Foundation endowment from $330 million to $425 million by 2016 and to $680 million by 2022.

Dear Friends, As I near completion of my first year as chairperson of the LSU Foundation Board of Directors, I appreciate the opportunity to thank you, our donors, for your continued support. I am pleased to report that our total returns for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, were up over 11 percent for both endowed portfolios. That is significantly improved over the previous fiscal year. Additionally, in early October, we again received a clean audit opinion from our outside accountants, Postlethwaite & Netterville. The Board’s Investment Committee and our chief investment officer and consultants, FEG, continue to manage and direct donated funds in line with industry best practices. The Board sets the endowed asset allocations to achieve long-term returns to meet our targets while minimizing risk. Two national achievements were credited to the CIO, George Moss. Asset International Chief Investment Officers recognized him as a 2013 “40 Under 40” Honoree and profiled him in the April issue of aiCIO. George was also named Small Endowment Manager of the Year by Institutional Investor magazine. Also notable, the Investment Committee has added several experienced and talented members from the Board who are versed in investment direction and strategy. These members will help ensure a prudent and practical direction for future investing of endowed funds. The LSU Foundation is headed in the right direction, a path of strength, growth and innovation. The LSU Foundation Laureate Society recognizes individuals, couples and organizations whose cumulative gifts to the LSU Foundation total $100,000 or more in support for LSU, the LSU AgCenter and the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center. Introduced in November 2006, Laureate Society levels were named for individuals whose contributions to LSU laid the groundwork for the university’s success today.

Gov. Parker, who served as governor of Louisiana from 1920-24, began the “Greater University” movement that led to the foundation of the present-day campus, including moving LSU from North Baton Rouge. He also passed a 2 percent severance tax to support education.
History professor Williams brought international attention to LSU academics when he won the 1970 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for “Huey Long.” Williams was a lecturer extraordinaire and served on the LSU faculty for 38 years.

TROY H. MIDDLETON LAUREATE $1,000,000-$4,999,999 As LSU president, Middleton helped restore LSU’s financial and academic reputation after a series of scandals in the 1930s. Boyd Professorships were created during his tenure. Despite a stellar military career, Middleton called his time at LSU his “most satisfying and rewarding.”

A master landscaper and arborist, Burden designed and facilitated much of Baton Rouge's green space. The LSU campus is a testament to his love for the land. Many of LSU's live oak and magnolia trees, valued at $50 million, were planted by Burden in the 1930s.

Involvement with LSU allows corporate and foundation partners to gain visibility as an employer of choice, a community citizen and a benefactor. The LSU Foundation’s Corporate and Foundation Relations team facilitates university-wide partnerships with corporations and private foundations in the areas of recruiting, research, education, outreach, employee training, environmental action and marketing. Corporations and foundations support LSU in a host of ways, through annual giving, matching employees’ gifts, service to community projects, and support of events, leadership initiatives, scholarships and facilities. Among the many areas of support provided last year were: Annual Giving Chevron, through its University Partnership Program, gave $860,000 to programs campus-wide, including Career Services, College of Engineering, College of Science, E. J. Ourso College of Business and the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center. Shell gave $151,500 in support of Career Services, College of Engineering, College of Science, E. J. Ourso College of Business, Honors College and Disability Services. Career Services BASF announced a $100,000 gift toward construction of the LSU Olinde Career Center, a multi-million dollar project that will bring together Career Services’ two current locations in a new, state-of-the-art environment better suited to prepare LSU students and alumni for their careers. Community Engagement Campus Federal sponsored Fall Fest, an opportunity for the campus community to celebrate the spirit of LSU with entertainment, fellowship and food on the Parade Ground, and provided support for LSU’s Rainmakers, faculty members who are nationally and internationally recognized for innovative research and creative scholarship, compete for external funding at the highest levels, and attract and mentor exceptional graduate students. Albemarle was a sponsor of LSU’s Spring Greening Day, through which students, staff and faculty participated in beautification projects on 12 campus sites, and provided support to the LSU Rural Life Museum, an open-air museum containing artifacts that exemplify everyday rural life through the 19th century. Program Support Fluor visited campus for the ribbon-cutting of the Fluor Industrial Safety Research Laboratory in the College of Engineering’s Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering. AT&T made a $300,000 donation to the Louisiana State Youth Opportunities Unlimited (LSYOU) program in the College of Human Sciences & Education to support the enhancement of a case-managed dropout prevention for 75 at-risk 9th grade students. Matching Gifts ExxonMobil employees, retirees and annuitants were recognized for giving more than $319,000 in support of LSU, which the ExxonMobil Foundation matched with a gift of $886,774. LSU celebrated the successful achievement of the National Math and Science Initiative’s $2 million matching gift challenge, through which NMSI matched $1 million in endowed support that was given to the LSU Foundation to sustain and grow the GeauxTeach Math/Science teacher preparation program.

Total assets include LSU Foundation endowed and non-endowed assets managed for the benefit of LSU, the LSU AgCenter and the LSU Paul M. The purpose of an endowment is to provide a source of perpetual funding. As such, endowment investing is a long-term proposition. Market fluctuations are expected, making longer-term returns more relevant to consider than the returns for a particular year. The LSU Foundation provides investment performance data to the National Association of College and University Business Officers for its annual endowment study. In comparison to those of its peer institutions, the LSU Foundation’s endowed pools perform favorably over longer-term timeframes. The five-year and 10-year returns of the general endowed pool have outperformed the median returns of the peer group. Performance for the General Endowed Portfolio for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, is presented in the bar chart below. Total return for the year was +11.1 percent.

The Board of Regents Support Fund Combined Portfolio is composed of endowed gifts that are matched through the Board of Regents’ matching program for chairs and professorships, as well as of the related matching funds received from the state. The five-year returns of this portfolio have outperformed the median returns of the peer group as a positive outcome of meaningful policy changes that began more than five years ago, with the most sweeping changes made effective in January 2013.
