Dear Friends,
When I stepped into the president and CEO role in summer 2011, I intended to serve in the interim position for six months. At the request of the Board of Directors, I stayed on and have been privileged to lead your LSU Foundation into a new chapter of fundraising success. I now look forward to retiring (again!) while staying actively involved on the Board. Last year was another successful one for us, and I am glad to share a few of the achievements that your support made possible: •
We are a little more than halfway through our four-year strategic plan and have, so far, exceeded our goals for both total fundraising and endowment growth.
•
Through the generosity of our donors, we raised $68.6 million, outpacing our goal for the 2013-14 fiscal year by $30 million.
•
Our endowed assets grew from $354 million to $395 million, largely as an outcome of market performance. We continue to work to increase our endowment through private giving to provide a perpetual stream of funding for the university.
•
The College of Engineering successfully wrapped its Breaking New Ground campaign, the most successful short-term fundraising effort in LSU’s history, to fund the renovation and expansion of Patrick F. Taylor Hall and construction of a Chemical Engineering Annex. Donors contributed $55 million, which the state of Louisiana is matching dollar for dollar.
Our Board of Directors is conducting a search for my successor, who will also serve as LSU’s vice president of university advancement. He or she will establish and communicate university-wide fundraising priorities, coordinate fundraising activities on behalf of LSU, and work closely with the LSU-affiliated foundations to create a more functional advancement environment and a better experience for donors. I cannot overstate the importance of private philanthropy to LSU—or your role in our success. In gratitude for your continued support,
G. Lee Griffin (MS Business, 1962) President and CEO
MISSION, VISION & VALUES The LSU Foundation Board of Directors recently adopted new mission, vision and values statements for the LSU Foundation that reflect our commitment to our donors and LSU.
Mission
Vision
The LSU Foundation inspires and shepherds philanthropic giving to LSU and builds long-lasting relationships with donors who bring life to current and emerging university priorities. We support LSU in its quest to enhance the student experience, provide working capital to recruit and retain world-class faculty and staff, support life-changing research, and drive economic development. We are dedicated to stewarding each gift to maximize donors’ impact on making LSU one of the best universities in the world.
The LSU Foundation aspires to be a recognized leader among the country’s university-related foundations. Our work to inspire a culture that unites philanthropic desires with university priorities will position LSU to lead public universities in all aspects of academic excellence. We will set the bar in honoring the trust our donors place in us. We will exemplify integrity, accountability, and transparency as we steward every gift we receive.
Values Integrity: We always do the right thing. We demonstrate truth and honesty while maintaining our donors’ right to confidentiality, earning the confidence of our donors and the extended LSU community. Transparency: We do what we say we will do. We clearly communicate our policies, actions, and results to the community we serve. Donor-centered Development: We respect our donors, first and foremost. We embrace only those development strategies that respect donors’ interests and foster mutually beneficial relationships. Stewardship: We treat each donor’s gift as if we made it ourselves. We are committed to efficiently and effectively using our resources, making wise investments, and honoring our responsibility to be accountable and transparent to our donors.

Dear Friends, It has been my pleasure to serve the LSU Foundation as chair of the Board of Directors over the last two years. As I conclude my term, I feel a great sense of excitement about the future. Our Board has a longstanding history of strength, stability and engagement, but we have recently taken the opportunity to delve into ways we can do even more for the LSU Foundation. Several months ago, we engaged the Association of Governing Boards, a prestigious international consulting firm, to help us benchmark our Board against those of other institutionally related foundations. Just as we have done in other areas of the organization, working with experts on high-performing boards helps us to make decisions that will ultimately result in more philanthropic support of LSU. Keeping attuned to “best practices” for Board leadership enables us to operate as efficiently and effectively as possible—especially important given the growing importance of philanthropy to LSU’s success. We have strengthened and realigned our committee structures, and our new board members have quickly taken on leadership roles that have greatly enhanced our work for the benefit of LSU. An internal Board taskforce is at the helm of reviewing and implementing our research into best practices and benchmarking against peers. Over the past 54 years, the LSU Foundation has continually evolved to meet LSU’s needs. We embrace opportunities to enhance our work, and our emerging model for higher education fundraising will put us at the forefront of institutionally related foundations across the country. Your LSU Foundation is poised to achieve a level of success that will instill pride in all who care about LSU, and we could not do it without you. Forever LSU,

CORPORATE AND FOUNDATION RELATIONS Selected Partnerships
Sarah Edwards Senior Director for Corporate and Foundation Relations
Michelle Kasischke Associate Director for Corporate and Foundation Relations
Involvement with LSU allows corporate and foundation partners to gain visibility as an employer of choice, a community citizen and a benefactor. The LSU Foundation’s Corporate and Foundation Relations team facilitates university-wide partnerships with corporations and private foundations in the areas of recruiting, research, education, outreach, employee training, environmental action and marketing. Corporations and foundations support LSU in a host of ways, through departmental giving, matching employees’ gifts, service to community projects, and support of events, leadership initiatives, scholarships, students and facilities. Among the many areas of support provided last year were: Annual Giving Chevron, through its University Partnership Program, gave $1.06 million to programs campus-wide, including the Colleges of Engineering, Science and Human Sciences & Education; the E. J. Ourso College of Business; the LSU Olinde Career Center; and the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center. Shell gave $151,500 in support of Career Services; the Center for Community Engagement, Learning and Leadership; the Colleges of Engineering and Science; Communication Across the Curriculum; Disability Services; the E. J. Ourso College of Business; and the Honors College. Capital Projects The College of Engineering announced the successful completion of LSU’s largest-ever short-term fundraising campaign, to renovate and expand Patrick F. Taylor Hall and construct a Chemical Engineering Annex. More than 450 donors, including many corporations, pledged $55 million in private funds, which the state of Louisiana will match dollar for dollar. Corporate partners that contributed $1 million or more include Turner Industries Group, LLC; RoyOMartin; Baker Hughes; BASF Corporation; Chevron, Inc.; DOW Foundation; Entergy Louisiana; Freeport-McMoran Oil & Gas; and MMR Group. Career Center The LSU Olinde Career Center reached 95 percent of its $3.55 million fundraising goal for a new, state-ofthe-art facility centrally located in the LSU Student Union. The center’s ribbon-cutting was held in early fall of 2014. Program Support For the first time, LSU researchers secured funding through the W. M. Keck Foundation’s prestigious and extremely competitive grant process. A $500,000 grant was awarded for the development of new X-ray imaging techniques using interferometry. A $50,000 grant was awarded to assist LSU Coastal Sustainability Studio faculty in planning a transdisciplinary undergraduate research curriculum geared toward solving Louisiana’s coastal challenges. The Bella Bowman Foundation announced a $75,000 grant to the LSU Medical Physics program (in the College of Science), in partnership with Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. The gift will establish the Bella Bowman Foundation Radiation Necrosis Research Fund to examine the risks of radiation injuries to the brain as a result of proto radiation therapy. Matching Gifts ExxonMobil and its employees and retirees gave more than $1.3 million to the LSU Foundation. Employees, retirees and annuitants were recognized for giving more than $386,000 in support of LSU, which the ExxonMobil Foundation matched with a gift of $967,376. 31

GENERAL ENDOWED PERFORMANCE July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014
The purpose of an endowment is to provide a source of perpetual funding. As such, endowment investing is a long-term proposition. Market fluctuations are expected, making longer-term returns more relevant to consider than the returns for a particular year. The LSU Foundation provides investment performance data to the National Association of College and University Business Officers for its annual endowment study. Our endowed pools have performed consistently with our peers over longer timeframes, but returns for any single fiscal year have fallen in the top quartile, bottom quartile and everywhere in between. Peer return goals vary as a function of differing spending rates, administrative fees and risk tolerances; asset allocation and the resulting return in a given year will vary accordingly. The General Endowed Portfolio is composed of endowed gifts directed by donors for a wide variety of purposes, the most common of which is to fund scholarships. Total return for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014, was +11.66 percent.
Performance 11.66% Fiscal Year 2013-14 6.53% 3-Year Annualized

GENERAL ENDOWED ASSET ALLOCATION July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014
The LSU Foundation invests endowed funds that are not related to the Board of Regents Support Fund (for matched chairs and professorships) in its General Endowed Portfolio. This pool has undergone meaningful asset allocation changes over the last five years, with the most sweeping changes made over the last two years. The General Endowed Portfolio is more diversified than it has been historically, and more than the average peer. The return goal for this pool has been the same for the past five years, but we intend to achieve it with less volatility and less reliance on equity markets. The General Endowed Portfolio’s asset allocation is set forth at the sole discretion of the LSU Foundation’s Board of Directors, as advised by the internal investment staff and the external investment consultant. The asset allocation shown is as of June 30, 2014. Percentages do not total 100 due to rounding.
