EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S LETTER

Dear Members, Supporters, and Friends of the LSU Museum of Art: I am excited to join the museum as the new executive director as of June 2023.

As I embark on this incredible journey as the new Director of the LSU Museum of Art, I am filled with excitement and anticipation for the transformative path ahead. My career has been shaped by meaningful experiences, one of which involved creating an International Children’s Museum program in a Texas middle school. This initiative allowed students and teachers to orchestrate an art exchange with a foreign school, fostering administrative skills and mentorship from museum professionals. During that time, a curious 6th-grade student prompted me to reflect on the essence of a good museum director, and I shared a simple yet profound answer—empathy.

Empathy, the cornerstone of my leadership philosophy, guides my interactions with museum staff, colleagues, and our valued visitors. Recognizing that our shared passion for art unites us, I celebrate the diversity of experiences within our team, creating an environment where ideas flow freely across all operational levels. Our galleries, extensions of this philosophy, serve as “safe places” for conversations about ideas and issues that may not find space elsewhere. At the LSU Museum of Art, our mission revolves around serving our campus and community partners. I am committed to shaping the museum’s direction in a way that ensures success for both the institution and our community. While our role as “public intellectuals” remains central, we acknowledge the power of art to broaden perspectives and enrich lives. Achieving this mission requires the dedication of our staff and the unwavering support of our Advisory and Friends Board volunteers. Within the pages of this annual report, you’ll delve into a comprehensive overview of our exhibitions, programs, and the intricate workings that sustain the LSU Museum of Art. It provides an insightful glimpse into the dedicated efforts that go into running a museum committed to serving our vibrant community. As you read, you’ll witness the pride we take in contributing to the cultural fabric of our surroundings. We express our deepest gratitude to our esteemed members, donors, and patrons whose invaluable support fuels our endeavors. AWARDS & EXHIBITION SUPPORT

Michelle Schulte, Chief Curator and Director of Public Programs, received the 2022 Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC) Museum Leadership Award. Initiated in 1994, this award recognizes mid-career museum professionals who have shown significant advancement within the profession by leadership in museum activities at his or her institution, within the museum profession as a whole, especially in the Southeast region. Award recipients were celebrated during the SEMC 2022 Annual Meeting Awards Luncheon on October 26, 2022, in Rogers, Arkansas, with a live-streamed leadership round table discussion. "Michelle has over fifteen years of experience as a curator, educator, and museum professional. Her sustained, active involvement in the Southeastern Museums Conference has established Michelle as a “go-to” leader in the region for advice and guidance for museum professionals at all career LSUMOA Curator Michelle Schulte (left) and levels. The LSU Museum of Art received awards in the 2022 Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC) Exhibition and Publication Competitions. The annual competition is open to museums in the Southeastern region to submit exhibition and publication projects for review of merit. The Boneyard: The Ceramics Teaching Collection, was selected for the Bronze Award in the Under $25,000 budget exhibition category and Form & Fire: American Studio Ceramics from the E. John Bullard Collection, Campaign was awarded a Gold Medal in the Campaigns category. Art Talk Newsletter was also awarded an Honorable Mention in the Magazines & Newsletters category. The publication projects were designed by LSUMOA's Communications and Marketing Specialist Sarah Amacker. 12

Louisiana Abstraction April 7–October 2, 2022

This exhibition included a selection of artworks from the LSU Museum of Art's permanent collection. Mounted as a compliment to, Blurring Boundaries, the exhibition showcased the immense talent found within our state, focusing on abstract artwork by women with connections to Louisiana. While their styles and techniques are uniquely individualized, they are bound by an affection for the state and artwork that moves the spirit.

Blurring Boundaries: The Women of American Abstract Artists, 1936 – Present July 14–October 23, 2022 Curated by Rebecca DiGiovanna, Administrative Manager at The Drawing Center This exhibition highlighted the indelible ways in which the women of American Abstract Artists have, for more than eighty years, shifted and shaped the frontiers of American abstraction. Through fifty-six works, Blurring Boundaries explored the artists’ astounding range of styles, including their individual approaches to the guiding principles of abstraction: color, space, light, material, and process. More than eighty years after its founding, AAA continues to nurture and support a vibrant community of artists with diverse identities and wide-ranging approaches to abstraction. This exhibition was organized by The Clara M. Eagle Gallery, Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky and the Ewing Gallery, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee and is toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC. It was locally sponsored by Taylor Porter Attorneys At Law. 17

Mario Moore: Responding to History July 14–October 23, 2022

EXHIBITIONS

Curated by Clarke Brown, LSUMOA Curatorial Fellow.

Featuring paintings and drawings, Mario Moore: Responding to History provided an in-depth look at Moore’s nuanced artwork During and After the Battle. At over five feet by six feet, the large-scale artwork offers much to contemplate. The painting within the painting makes this work even more intriguing. A product of a collaboration with fellow artist Mark Gibson, During and After the Battle responds to classical painting traditions, American history, and the Civil War, and reflects on the past and the present. Mario Moore: Responding to History also included Gibson’s painting Battle of Antietam, which gave visitors another view into Moore’s process for During and After the Battle.

Pearlware, Polish, and Privilege: Art by Paul Scott October 27, 2022–February 26, 2023 Curated by Michelle Schulte, LSUMOA Chief Curator. Paul Scott was the Paula G. Manship Endowed Lecture Series Visiting Artist, and this exhibit was a collaboration between the LSU College of Art + Design, the LSU School of Art, and the LSUMOA. Paul Scott transforms factory-made tableware with subversive imagery and commentary. He replicates traditional porcelain designs developed by late 18th century English artisans, such as the Willow pattern or Spode’s Blue Italian. These early ornamentations included appropriated motifs copied from hand-painted blue and white wares imported from China, and were mass-produced using printed glaze transfers applied on porcelain and pearlware blanks. At first glance, Scott’s contemporary redesigns are indistinguishable from manufactured originals. Scott's work was paired with objects from the LSUMOA's permanent collection to enhance the messaging, exploring themes of colonialism, slavery, civil rights, and environmental destruction 19

Mediterranea: American Art from the Graham D. Williford Collection November 17, 2022–February 26, 2023

Curated by Dr. Mark White, the Executive Director of the New Mexico Museum of Art.

The exhibition Mediterranea: American Art from the Graham D. Williford Collection, featured seventy-one works created by American artists who visited or studied in areas included in the Grand Tour tradition. The varied collection of late 19th and early 20th century paintings provided an overview of the Mediterranean and explored the rich diversity of the region, as seen through the eyes of American artists. Their paintings capture the environment, the distinct colors and atmosphere, the varied flora and fauna, and the uniqueness of the people who lived an ocean apart. This exhibition was made possible by the generous sponsorship and loan of artwork from The Jean and Graham Devoe Williford Charitable Trust in Fairfield, Texas.

Volterra and Pasqua by Kevin Benham November 17, 2022–February 26, 2023 Curated by Clarke Brown, LSUMOA Curatorial Fellow.

This exhibit was on view alongside the Mediterranea: American Art from the Graham D. Williford Collection. Kevin Benham’s photographic series Volterra captures the ecology of mosses, lichens, and other vegetation growing on the calcareous rock formations of an ancient theater built in the Augustan Period during the first century BC. On view alongside Benham’s photographs was a short film entitled Pasqua. Drawing inspiration from the early documentaries by the Italian imaginative realist film director Vittorio de Seta, Pasqua explores a contemporary view of the Transhumanza, an Italian term meaning transhumance, the traditional bi-yearly migration of sheep or cows from the highlands to the lowlands and back. Captured entirely during Holy Week in the Molise region of Italy, the film incorporates the tempo and rhythm of the day to record the relationship between the upland meadow and the herds of sheep, creating an intimate view of the remote agrarian landscape. 21

Some Boys, a Few Bunnies, and One Lousy Unicorn: Sculptures by Alex Podesta October 13, 2022 – April 2, 2023

EXHIBITIONS

Curated by Michelle Schulte, LSUMOA Chief Curator. As a child, New Orleans artist Alex Podesta, dressed in his favorite fuzzy, footed pajamas, imagined himself as a rabbit, taking on the characteristics of his cartoon hero—Bugs Bunny. Armed with Bugs’s wit, self-confidence, and keenness, Podesta went on adventures, both real and imagined. The artist captures this childhood innocence and fascination with the world through meticulously modeled sculptural self-portraits. The fantastical tableaux reference Podesta’s inner thoughts, desires, and memories. While whimsical at first sight, the existential scenes become darker upon further examination. We get a sense of loneliness, isolation, and the loss of childhood wonder as adulthood inevitably takes over our lives. Thank you to Leonard H. Sedlin for supporting this exhibition. 22

I, Too, Am Thornton Dial March 30–July 2, 2023 The LSUMOA exhibition was curated by Michelle Schulte, LSUMOA Chief Curator. The original exhibition was curated by Paul Barrett.

I, Too, Am Thornton Dial, included over seventy pivotal drawings, sculptures, paintings, and assemblages drawn from private and family collections. Dial drew inspiration from his life experiences, blending complex themes like Civil Rights, race, class, and family into sophisticated drawings, arrangements, and assemblages crafted with found objects—everything from bones, wood, toys, metal, and clothing. Hank Willis Thomas Unbranded: Reflections in Black by Corporate America April 20–July 30, 2023

Curated by Clarke Brown, LSUMOA Curatorial Fellow.

Hank Willis Thomas investigates race, identity, and class, with a focus on African American imagery and references in advertising, media, and popular culture. Thomas’s series Unbranded surveys fifty years of print advertising targeting African Americans. Thomas strips the advertisements of text and all references to product names and slogans, revealing subliminal messages of inequality and reinforce cultural stereotypes seen in popular culture. Art in Louisiana: Views into the Collection Updated annually with works from the permanent collection Curated by Michelle Schulte, LSUMOA Chief Curator. Featuring works from the LSUMOA permanent collection of over 6,500 objects, these galleries include: Modern & Contemporary, Portrait, Chinese Jade, an Intro Gallery, and a newly renovated Ceramics Gallery. Artworks are rotated and updated regularly for visitors to experience and view new works throughout the year. NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS PROJECT

ART EDUCATION The Summer 2023 Neighborhood Arts Project (NAP) was one for the books!

The LSU Museum of Art Education Department added several new sites to the NAP tour. Coupled with established sites from years past, we were joined by members of other community-based groups and volunteers. Participants created art inspired by works found in our galleries. From Gee’s Bend quilts to Clementine Hunter’s painting Zinnias, our community’s artists experienced the beauty of these artists’ works and many more across this great city. The Neighborhood Arts Project would not have been a success if it were not for our committed LSU student workers, Ella, Omari, and Sarah. Their hard work and compassion for service truly impacted the lives of every participant. A huge thank you to MayorPresident Sharon Weston Broome and our friends at CareSouth for being dedicated sponsors to this initiative. Due to their generous gifts, over 600 artworks were created. The Neighborhood Arts Project has been committed to serving the East Baton Rouge Parish for over a decade, and will continue to do so for years to come.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

LSUMOA provided art activities and information about the museum at: ⊲ Baton Rouge Pride Fest ⊲ Juneteenth Fest in Donaldsonville, LA ⊲ Back to School Bash in Baton Rouge, LA

LSUMOA expanded outreach and evolved programs with the goal of more inclusivity: ⊲B REC’s Sunshine Interactive Program and Sunshine Club, which provides social and creative activities to adults with a variety of special needs and challenges, displayed artworks in the LSU Museum of Art's Community Gallery. ⊲2 25 Fest brought art to the local community. ⊲N eighborhood Arts Project began providing art activities for senior citizens.

FREE FIRST SUNDAYS AND FREE FRIDAY NIGHTS

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

The museum offers free museum admission with exhibition-specific activities for children and adults on the first Sunday of each month and every Friday night. LSU PARTNERSHIPS In response to the rising demand for digital content post-pandemic, Chief Curator Michelle Schulte collaborated with LSU Assistant Professor of Virtual Production and Immersive Media, Jason Jamerson on a digital twin project. This project also includes producing 3D scans of permanent collection objects and augmented reality experiences. To kick off the project, LSU’s Digital Media Arts and Engineering (DMAE) graduate students, Katherine Wilson and Meredyth Yorek, crafted 3D scans of Thornton Dial’s artworks from the exhibition I, Too, Am Thornton Dial.

ART AT LUNCH LSUMOA launched this new free program series, inviting art professionals and artists to share their knowledge and experience with visitors during a monthly lunch break.

TODDLER THURSDAYS Another new program series created was just for toddler museum visitors and their families. Through engaging and interactive activities, toddlers make art, learn about current exhibitions at the museum, and collaboratively explore their creativity.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

PANEL DISCUSSIONS & ARTIST TALKS The museum hosted many engaging panel discussions and artist talks for the public. One of the goals of programming is to foster a dynamic environment for learning, interaction, dialogue, and art appreciation. Programs included a panel with Richard Dial (son of artist Thornton Dial) and museum professionals Ann Collins Smith and Paul Barrett who gave both a personal and historical perspective of Thornton Dial's artworks; a panel discussion about the impact of imagery from the Hank Willis Thomas: Unbranded exhibition; and visiting artist talks such as Paul Scott, and many more.

COLLECTIONS TOURS The museum hosted many behind-the-scenes tours in the permanent collections storage facility. Classes from LSU were able to learn about how museums care for art, collecting practices, and the opportunity to interact and engage with museum staff members

GROUP & SCHOOL TOURS The museum's education department held many group and school tours sharing information on artists and artworks featured in exhibitions to all ages visiting the museum through gallery walk-throughs and art activities.

COMMUNITY PERFORMANCES Community members and groups were invited to use the gallery space to host programming that enriched the visitor experience in new ways. Music performances were paired with the artwork on view to create immersive rich experiences in the museum.

The LSU Museum of Art's permanent collection expanded with the acquisitions of 143 objects including artworks by Anne Noggle, J. Fiber, Ruenell Foy Temps, Robert von Sternberg, Luis Cruz Azaceta, and more.

CURATORIAL FELLOWSHIP CLARKE BROWN

LSUMOA’s first Curatorial Fellow, Clarke Brown made significant contributions during her tenure. She began at the Museum in July 2020, initially tasked with researching methods to increase diversity within the museum’s permanent collection and assisting the curatorial team. Over the following two years, the position grew, with Brown playing an integral role in exhibitions and programming, seeing her independently curate three exhibitions featuring underrepresented artists, and leading numerous educational initiatives. She helped organize our collection database, actively participated in the Collections Committee, and provided acquisition recommendations.

The Museum’s premiere fellowship was made possible by a generous gift from Winifred and Kevin P. Reilly, as part of the Winifred and Kevin P. Reilly Initiative for Underrepresented Artists. Founded in 2020, the Initiative not only provided the critical resources to fund Brown’s fellowship, but also allowed the LSUMOA to considerably expand its holdings of artwork by historically overlooked populations, particularly African American and Latinx artists. Thanks to the donation, the Museum has acquired pieces by numerous pivotal American artists including Sonya Clarke, Radcliffe Bailey, and renowned Gee’s Bend quilter, Mary Lee Bendolph. Winifred Reilly shared her larger vision for the project in 2022, stating, “Kevin and I developed this initiative with the museum staff to support structural change at LSU MOA by fostering greater inclusivity. We hope this gift will encourage others to join us now and in future gifting to support LSU MOA’s commitment to becoming a place where everyone sees themselves, their culture, and their values represented.” Thank you Clarke!
