Letter of Introduction

Spring Issue

About Ltg. Caring… Our way of life. Brooke A brief Introduction letter

Dear New Jersey District of Key Club International, Greetings, my name is Brooke Willemstyn, and I am honored to write this letter of introduction as your lieutenant governor of division 10 for the 2014-2015 service year. I have worked as treasurer, acting secretary, and president of my home club, Red Bank Regional, giving me a solid platform of knowledge for training club officers at upcoming Regional Training Conferences, and will keep up to date as to whether or not they are performing their respective duties. I originate from division 9, but could not be more excited to be brought into this new division. I encourage and will assist division 10’s magnificent key clubs to work with, and grow together as a division this service year. Throughout my entire life, service has always appealed to me on a level more than self-gain. While it is nice to receive a pat on the back for a job well-done, it is much more gratifying to see the impact in the eyes of those who’s lives we Key Clubbers have the ability to impact, and often, improve upon. It would be a selfish endeavor to keep this joy of service to myself, and so throughout this term I will be focusing on growth of my existing clubs, and the chartering of new local clubs, with the help of the K-Family. To do so, I have determined the following goals, to be gradually completed throughout my term: • •

• 2

Visit all existing clubs and contact prospective schools (clubs to be chartered) by the end of the 2014 school year. Have the majority of officers trained by or shortly after Fall Rally, at a regional training conference (RTC), and by offering conveniently placed and timed officer training conferences (OTC). Increase attendance at district events such as District Convention (DCON; the annual weekend conference held at Ocean Place in Long Branch where awards are distributed, workshops held, and lots of fun had by the entire NJ District) and Fall Rally (gathering at Six Flags Great Adventure) by publicizing the events and providing opportunities to fundraise to participate (including chocolate sales, fundraising ideas presentation or powerpoint, etc.). Introduce service projects for clubs to take over and prepare them to be competitors for big service awards (as well as all other awards) at DCON 2015; such include the Yuda Bands project. Let the goals of the NJ District reflect the needs of division 10.

Samantha Levisay District Governor

Issue [#] :: [Date]

Jacqueline Dragon District Secretary

Daniel McCormack District Treasurer

Patrick Quinn District Editor

Check out these beautiful people! We’re talking about… THE 2014-2015 DISTRICT EXECUTIVE BOARD Governor Levisay: I could not be more pleased to be working with such a selfless individual, and I know she is able to handle any challenge we through her way. She shows a professionalism well beyond her years, and I really believe that if we “Leave it to Levisay” we can maintain NJ’s glory at the international level. Secretary Dragon: Her name can basically tell you how awesome of a person Jackie is, but her organizational skills and time management are beyond compare. I don’t think we could have gotten luckier in this fabulous young woman for secretary Treasurer McCormack: One of my favorite facts about Dan is that he lives on a farm (like his Facebook page! à McCormack Farms). He’s super easy to talk to, and continues to shock me with his intelligence, and instill in me the confidence that he can manage our district budget. Editor Quinn: The legendary “Brad Pitt” as he is sometimes called is leading rightfully in Pak’s footsteps, and continuing the excellence of our Jersey Key. This fabulous design-connoisseur is both professional and down to the Earth, where he is an active volunteer (which is the very best isn’t it?!)

Srikar Gudipati District Webmaster

Webmaster Gudipati: Although Webmaster is an appointed position, I could not be more thrilled that Srikar was appointed, just like me! He’s already begun crafting our njkeyclub.org to fit his ideas, and I must say, they are fabulous ideas indeed!

“Hi Brooke, I’m a Key Clubber and I have no idea what I’m doing…” Please send me more of these emails! As lieutenant governor of your division, it is my responsibility to keep you informed on your duties and responsibilities, until all of you can ask me to start doing things. Here’s some basic ropes to being a Key Clubber (all officers should know the following) DCON: This is the abbreviation for District Convention. It marks the end of the service year and beginning of a new one. Key Clubbers from all over New Jersey meet to attend workshops, meet each other, and participate in all the amazing events! DCM: This stands for Divisional Council Meeting. Basically I round everyone up (at least one representative per club), create an agenda, and we have a good-old fashioned face-to-face conversation, mainly about what we as a division want to accomplish, as well as what the District requires of us.

Fundraising Key Club can sometimes feel expensive, and people often feel as if they need to pay for all these events out of pocket. But why not FUNdraise? Ask family members for small $10 contributions, walk your neighbor’s cats, or hold a bake sale! There are dozens of ways to raise funds to go to these events, just stick to the following rules, and you’ll be blue, white, and especially gold this service year!!

1

APPROVAL: before you start selling any sort of cookie, wrapping paper, or pin on school grounds, or private property – administrative permission is KEY.

2

CREATIVITY: try to get involved in a fundraiser that sells something people want, or leave collection jars in creative (and approved) places.

3

SUPPORT: get some other Key Clubbers in on the FUNdraising action. To the left are some fun examples.

OTC: Congrats! If you got to an Officer Training Conference it means you’ve been elected to an officer position in your club. Governor Levisay sent out training manuals for this meeting, so I can help you understand the ins-and-outs of your position. Fall Rally: Everyone should be pumped! Fall Rally is the “get-psyched” event for us dedicated Key Clubbers, where we all gather at six flags for a day of fun, and socializing for other Key Clubbers. Keep your eyes out for the coveted spirit stick!

(Continued) Communication! Chatter! People talking to other people! It seems relatively easy, but it’s often surprising to see how little is none the further down you go on the Key Club structure. Considering general members really are the most important, this is a major no-can-do! As you’re lieutenant governor I am your representative at the District level. YOU tell me what to tell the board, so the opinions of your club matter very much in determining the course of future events! HOLMDEL: after a very productive meeting with Holmdel’s Key Club with visiting Kiwanian Mr. Joey G on April 22, I discovered a gold mine of ideas! Adviser Ms. Lazar offered her experienced opinion about several DCON workshops, and officer Blake Portmann discussed a very creative pumpkin fundraiser for next fall. How can you help? PLEASE send in your officer roster form ASAP, even if your club doesn’t hold elections until the Fall (we can re-do it then) With these rosters, I can organize my email to send out divisional updates, and keep you all informed throughout the service year. I’ll share these forms with everyone so you can text/email each other, and better Prove you read the newsletter! Ask me about any of the images and I’ll give you the explanation!
