C

ommunicating effectively is a key element to success. It involves the elements of transmitting, receiving and understanding the message being directed to others in relationships especially in the workforce. As a senior leader and manager, I welcomed my employees to state the problem. However, when they bring a problem to the staff meeting they must have some possible solutions in mind to resolve the issue. Moaning, groaning and constant complaining will not work. Seeking resolution will bring respect to you from your managers and fellow colleagues. Here are a few strategies to help you rise to the top in most situations:

confront. Let them know first there is a problem and attempt to “resolve” first before moving to the next level. You don’t want to damage relationships; you want to build good relationships and keep the "Bridge" you cross going up as you may need it coming back down.

Take ownership and avoid blaming. Why, you will be isolated in your agency across staff lines. There will be a time when the “who done it” needs to be identified, not humiliated in public. If you see yourself as a "team player” then you are not a part of the problem. Blaming others and excluding yourself is not the approach that will win you friends, but will guarantee you enemies. The goal is to resolve and see a win-win when possible.

Honor your commitments. Each piece of the puzzle is needed to complete the puzzle. A team member is like that piece of the puzzle. Your “lack of” causes a “crack of” and can result in failure to meet critical deadlines. If your “plate” is full ask for help or let someone know before the commitment is due. Help others along the way. Mentor - Coach - Teach one or reach one. You can’t help everyone, but you can help someone. Educate, Encourage and motive others and help them find opportunities to use their gifts, talents and skill sets.

Actions speak louder than words. Your nonverbal and verbal communications are extremely critical. If you speak distastefully about your leaders, managers or peers, those listening or not will have formed and opinion about your professional decorum. If you are looking for a promotion, as a core value working and coping with others is a skill set that you will need to move to your next level.

I am Cita Maloon-Gibson, the one and only Empowerment Doc. Growing and Empowering Future Leaders Now! My Why? Is your success. Accomplishments are not done alone. Give credit where credit is due. A Nation’s Greatness Depends on Its Leader By Suzy Kassem

T

o vastly improve your country and truly make it great again, start by choosing a better leader. Do not let the media or the establishment make you pick from the people they choose, but instead choose from those they do not pick. Pick a leader from among the people who is heart-driven, one who identifies with the common man on the street and understands what the country needs on every level. Do not pick a leader who is only money-driven and does not understand or identify with the common man, but only what corporations need on every level. Pick a peacemaker. One who unites, not divides. A cultured leader who supports the arts and true freedom of speech, not censorship. Pick a leader who will not only bail out banks and airlines, but also families from losing their homes -- or jobs due to their companies moving to other countries. Pick a leader who will fund schools, not limit spending on education and allow libraries to close. Pick a leader who chooses diplomacy over war. An honest broker in foreign relations. A leader with integrity, one who says what they mean, keeps their word and does not lie to their people. Pick a leader who is strong and confident, yet humble. Intelligent, but not sly. A leader who encourages diversity, not racism. One who understands the needs of the farmer, the teacher, the doctor, and the environmentalist -- not only the banker, the oil tycoon, the weapons developer, or the insurance and pharmaceutical lobbyist. Pick a leader who will keep jobs in your country by offering companies incentives to hire only within their borders, not one who allows corporations to outsource jobs for cheaper labor when there is a national employment crisis. Choose a leader who will invest in building bridges, not walls. Books, not weapons. Morality, not corruption. Intellectualism and wisdom, not ignorance. Stability, not fear and

terror. Peace, not chaos. Love, not hate. Convergence, not segregation. Tolerance, not discrimination. Fairness, not hypocrisy. Substance, not superficiality. Character, not immaturity. Transparency, not secrecy. Justice, not lawlessness. Environmental improvement and preservation, not destruction. Truth, not lies. Most importantly, a great leader must serve the best interests of the people first, not those of multinational corporations. Human life should never be sacrificed for monetary profit. There are no exceptions. In addition, a leader should always be open to criticism, not silencing dissent. Any leader who does not tolerate criticism from the public is afraid of their dirty hands to be revealed under heavy light. And such a leader is dangerous, because they only feel secure in the darkness. Only a leader who is free from corruption welcomes scrutiny; for scrutiny allows a good leader to be an even greater leader. And lastly, pick a leader who will make their citizens proud. One who will stir the hearts of the people, so that the sons and daughters of a given nation strive to emulate their leader's greatness. Only then will a nation be truly great, when a leader inspires and produces citizens worthy of becoming future leaders, honorable decision makers and peacemakers. And in these times, a great leader must be extremely brave. Their leadership must be steered only by their conscience, not a bribe.”

Executive women Finding Courage to Take Risks & Crack Open the Box By Dr. Madeline Ann Lewis

I

f you want to make big moves in life, you have to take risks. But taking risks isn’t easy, and it puts most people in unfamiliar territory. Unfamiliar territory can, in turn, often feel dangerous and cumbersome. The human mind loves familiarity, as familiarity usually means safety in some form as well as access to resources. This love of familiarity is literally hardwired into our brains and with good reason. During our evolution, those who could remember where water holes and predators were located, well, they had a better day! Tossing all of this familiarity aside and deciding to take risks and think outside the box can be very difficult and feel scary. Yet, it is critical that you realize that this is exactly what you may need to do to reach your career or business goals. Taking bold and decisive action at the right moment in time may be what separates you from the fulfilling life you want and living a life that is less than what you dream. Oddly enough, walking away from the security of the known and into the insecurity of the unknown is likely what you’ll need to do to achieve your goals and happiness. Risks are not "one-size fits all" affairs. If you are not accustomed to taking any risks at all, then even a small risk may seem huge. Keep this fact in mind as you move forward. You need to first think about what the risk is you are contemplating and then measure that risk against reality. Will your business or livelihood go “down the drain” if you fail? Or is the risk in question a minor or medium risk move? Understanding the difference can go a long way towards helping you decide just how cautious you

6

THINK DIFFERENTLY Fall 2016

need to be. The greater the potential downside of failure, the greater your preparation must be, period! Finding the courage to take risks and think outside the box often comes down to motivation. If you want or need more courage to take the steps you need to take to be happy, then you need to step back and think about what motivates you. Fully understanding what it is that motivates you will help you get the courage that you need. You can use these motivating factors to help you zero in and stay focused during times of weakness. In many situations, the consequences of not taking bold action are so unpleasant especially over the long haul, that you are left with no option other than to act. If you can’t imagine not taking bold action and changing the course of your life, then you should have all the motivation and thus all the courage you need. So don’t be afraid to think big. Then go ahead and plan meticulously to make the most out of your out of the box thinking.

How to Build Your Dream Business and Be an Awesome Mother

By Regina Clay

I

f you work for yourself, you will have the freedom to create your own time. You can build your job around your life and things you like. It is a satisfying feeling to remain good for your family and still develop a strong, profitable business. Also, when you’re performing what you like, it doesn’t feel as though work. If you have been wondering taking the step into entrepreneurship, below are steps to help you get started on the right path to building a prosperous business. Study your concept. People invest in services and products that solve their problem. The problem must be a big issue that folks care about it and want it resolved. Spend time studying your concept, see if it is been done before and if others has become profitable at it. Get all the guides, magazines and content you will find on this subject. Having knowledge or an interest is a great start, but you will need a complete knowledge of the sector you want to get into. Associate yourself with get-it people. You wish to have people in your part who realize your dreams and support you with what you’re doing. Staying in business may be lonely, particularly if most people in your network do company jobs. You need anyone to bounce suggestions from, to help you carry out your ideas

and to give you that boost you need to continue going. If you don’t have such interactions in your circle, a coach may be one of your finest assets. Keep that day job. When you’re just starting, keep your present job available to avoid the unwanted pressure of wanting to pay your debts while developing a business. You may lose a little sleep, but getting a day job will help to ease anxiety and opens you to be more innovative while starting your new business opportunity. When you’re working, give 100 percent to your work. Don’t exhaust your employer’s valuable time and assets for your own business. Develop a one-page business strategy. Once you have picked your dream business, invest time creating a one-page action oriented business strategy. This is an essential step in leading your actions and will work as a significant structure for analyzing future possibilities. A good part of your success will come from your potential to stay strong and say no to problems that do not result in your business imagination. Now that you own a basic strategy for what you want to model your dream business, it is advisable for you to put your plans into action and continue being an awesome mother. Executive women What

is

? By Dr. Jo Anne White

Knowing what success means personally leads you closer to the answer and closer to mastery.

S

Close your eyes for a moment. Who do you see or think about when you think of a successful person? Why do you believe that person is successful?

uccess is not the same for everyone. Success is personal and relative. We all have different measures of success. Not only is it different for each person; it may be different for each area of our lives such as work, relationships, children, partnerships, financial, etc. Knowing what your definition of success is will help you attain it. How do you measure your own success? Is it by money in your bank account, investments, inner peace, valued friends and relationships? Is it about a strong sense of personal worth or freedom? Is it something else and something more? Success is also measured by certain standards and other’s perceptions that are outward or external. Yet, you also need to pay attention to your internal standards of success. In my book, Mastering the Art of Success, that very important success question is addressed by me and by other influential professionals and success figures like Jack Canfield, Les Brown and Mark Victor Hansen. Before you can master anything, whether it’s cooking, teaching, painting, parenting or running a business, you need to know what it means to you.

8

THINK DIFFERENTLY Fall 2016

Next, think about what you need to feel successful. Imagine how your life would be. Creating a powerful active vision of your success is vital. You set your own standard and your direction. Ultimately, the answer is up to you, based on what resonates with you and who you are, and with your important values or principles. We need to remember that success is not some fixed moment of arrival. Get comfortable with the idea that success is a process, a journey of growth, discovery and challenge. We can achieve small successes in the different life domains that add value to our lives and others. Applaud each of your successes along the way!

Growing and Empowering Future Leaders to By Dr. Amicitia Maloon-Gibson

H

ere’s an empowerment moment for you that will be a stepping stone to your success as you start your journey and follow your passion in any career field. Many of you are already creative and have found your passion, especially those in the creative arts of musicality. As a product of the baby boomer generation, here are some tidbits I can share with you on your journey to success that will save you thousands of dollars and time in going down the wrong path. Answer these questions. First: Are you an individual seeking job satisfaction? Second: What is the greatest obstacle that is paralyzing you from reaching your goal? If you are an employee, you should have a back-up plan? Third: Do you have an option or back-up plan if you are released from your current position today? Like Nike says, “Just Do it!” Why? Well, employers are doing more with less and not really looking at succession planning, meaning that today you are the best thing that ever happened to them yesterday. Employers are seeking to retain the best of the best and that may not be you, although you have greatness in you. Putting it nicely, there is a projected shortage of highly skilled employees and employers, like the baby boomer generation, recognize this skillsets-GAP-lack. Highly skilled and experienced Boomers are being offered retention bonus and other benefits to stay in the workforce as late as 75 years of age. Boomers are being offered work-at-home options, flexwork schedules, promotions and health packages never offered in previous generations. Why? Boomers have coined the work ethics that no other generation has exemplified. Even living longer, boomers have skillsets that are unique and valuable, so they can retire early, start a second career or become an

Success

entrepreneur. Here are the surveyed statistical data that should stimulate and give you a wakeup call or aha moment. Some survey show that 76 percent of baby boomers intend to keep working and earning in retirement, although many say they will "retire" from their current job at 64 and then jump into an entirely new job or career. According to Silvernail Consultants, by the year 2030, 57.8 million baby boomers will still be alive with 54.9 percent being female. For more statistics visit census.gov/ipc/www/ usinterimproj/ and refer to the link genpolicy.com/2006_journal/ index_articles.html. Explore the following site that will help calculate your estimated SSI payments: ssa.gov/OACT/quickcalc/index.html. However, Social Security benefits may not be available to your generation. Again I ask you, “What are your options and back-up plans if you are released from your current position today?” As a twice retired senior executive, I can tell you from experience that thousands have benefited from baby boomers like me. At MGAA Professional Development Institute, our mission is “growing and empowering future leaders now” the next generation—you. We want you to be the best of the best. We want your team, church, choir and organization to stand out as 21st Century great leaders and we have the experience, tools and skillset to get you there. You benefit from our mistakes and stepping stones that took us to the top! Lack of mentorship, coaching and leadership results in performance that is marginal and poor. FINANCIAL SUCCESS The Key to Building Wealth: 3 Areas of Focus By Shawn Dorrough

M

y mentor abruptly interrupted me from one of my usual complaint sessions; this one was about my job not paying me enough

money.

Sensing his patience was being tested; I threw a little passion behind my argument like a defense attorney going in for the big close. But he just looked at me unfazed and strongly advised me to take a hard look at my bank account, poor health, terrible job situation and other areas where I was unhappy and realize that there was only one individual responsible for my situation. He was right. Since that day I have had the privilege to work with several wealthy individuals and I noticed how they share some of the same intense focuses to succeed - and excuses is not one of them. So I’d like to offer three important areas of focus that could create financial success: FOCUS ON SELF-IMPROVEMENT. Wealthy people don’t waste time and energy on things that don’t create returns. Instead of watching television all weekend they read books, attend seminars, listen to or watch educational audio and DVD programs. They spend their free time learning how to create opportunities or find ways to become more valuable to their community, customers and clients.

to avoid risk. In a sense you can’t blame them because no one enjoys putting their necks on the line for the fun of it (unless you’re the adventurous type). However, taking smart calculated risk is the key to creating real wealth and managing that risk is a regular part of the wealthy person’s life. What I learned: There’s a huge difference between playing to win and playing not to lose. FOCUS ON ASSETS, NOT LIABILITIES. For the wealthy a “toy” is fun to have but their priorities are on assets first before creating debts. They spend their money on real assets and use them to pay for the expenses they create. Items like stocks, bonds, real estate, businesses, education, intellectual property and similar income producers are their income generators they always take precedent over buying ‘stuff’. What I learned: to someone that has wealth, an asset is a thousand times more valuable than a house or car. The good news is that anyone can become wealthy. Years ago my mentor convinced me of that. It just requires the right focus, add great value and a lot of work than step back and watch your income begin to grow exponentially.

What I learned: If you want to be wealthy, you must be willing to become a better version of yourself. FOCUS ON TAKING CALCULATED RISK. The average person does just about everything possible

POLITICAL LEGEND

Shirley Chisholm By Dr. Madeline Ann Lewis

Legendary Pioneer in Presidential Politics

By Farrell J. Chiles

A

s we go to the presidential election voting this November, we must not forget the pioneer who helped pave the way for the first African American president and the first woman to get nominated for the presidency by a major political party. Shirley Chisholm – short in stature, but tall with ambition – is just one of the ways you can describe the first black congresswoman. But, she described herself as the “first black woman congressman”. She was a trailblazer who challenged conventional thinking by running for President of the United States of America. Determined not to be mistaken as a candidate for any political bosses or special interest, she was known as “Fighting Shirley Chisholm – Unbought and Unbossed”.

racism there and fought against it. Black students were denied the opportunity to join a social club and Miss St. Hill was moved to start a club of her own. In 1942, she graduated from Brooklyn College with honors, but could not get a job that matched her educational status. After being turned down due to racism, she accepted a position as a teacher, but was not discouraged. Chisholm went on to obtain her Master’s degree in elementary education from Teachers College at Colombia University. From 1953-1959, she was the Director of HamiltonMadison Child Care Center and became an educational consultant for the Division of Day Care from 1959-1964. In 1949, Shirley St. Hill became Shirley St. Hill Chisholm; she married Conrad Chisholm, a Jamaican, who worked as a private investigator. They had similar interests in politics, locally and nationally. They helped to form the BedfordStuyvesant Political League and in 1960, Chisholm started the Unity Democratic Club, thus helping to mobilize African American and Hispanic voters.

Chisholm was born on November 30, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York to Charles (British Guiana) and Ruby (Barbados) as Shirley Anita St. Hill. At the age of 3, she was sent to Barbados to live with her maternal grandmother to be educated in the British school system where she received a strong academic background.

Chisholm ran for a state assembly seat which she won and served in the New York Assembly for 1964-68. While in the Assembly, she proposed a bill to provide state aid to daycare centers and voted to increase funding for schools on a per-pupil basis.

Chisholm returned to New York at the age of 10 to attend an all-girls school from which she graduated with top honors. Brooklyn College was her choice of schools to attend after graduation. She faced

In 1968, Chisholm campaigned to represent New York’s Twelfth Congressional District. She won and thus became the first African American woman elected to Congress. She used her position to (Continued SHIRLEY CHISHOLM on Page 12)

She was placed on the Veteran Affairs Committee as a freshman in Congress after refusing an assignment to the House Agricultural Committee. She was elected to a second term in Congress in 1970.In 1971, Chisholm became a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus. On January 25, 1972, Chisholm announced her candidacy for president. She ran for the office in spite of hopeless odds. Her demonstrated sheer will was marked by her refusal to accept the status quo. Chisholm received 152 first-ballot votes at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. The whole point of her campaign was not to win, but enter the struggle and pave the way for the future. She lost her bid for the Presidency, but made an impact on the Nation. She continued to serve in the House for a total of seven terms. She retired from Congress in 1983, Chisholm fought for Social Welfare, equal education for children and opposed the draft. After retirement from Congress, she moved to Florida and remained an active political figure, lecturer, and spokeswoman. She was the creator and chair of the National Political Congress of Black Women and served on the Advisory Council of the National Organization for Women.

In 1993, Chisholm was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Chisholm said,

“When I die, I want to be remembered as a woman who lived in the twentieth century and who dared to be a catalyst for change. I don't want be remembered as the first black woman who went to Congress, and I don't even want to be remembered as the first woman who happen to be black to make a bid for the presidency. I want to be remembered as a woman who fought for change in the twentieth century. That's what I want.” Chisholm is remembered as a woman who fought for change in the 20th century. Her mission was accomplished, but not finished. She was a creative personality and a fighter until her death on January 1, 2005 at the age of 80. On April 9, 2006, a documentary film, entitled. “Shirley Chisholm ’72: Unbought and Unbossed”, chronicling Chisholm’s 1972 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, was announced as a winner of a Peabody Award. Shirley Chisholm did not win the 1972 nomination for the Democratic Party. But she did win. She made history by challenging the political system and impacting the future of the United States. Health & wellness

By Dr. Amicitia Maloon Maloon--Gibson

O

ne day during a coaching session, a client asked me, “After thirty years of service to the nation, what keeps you glowing, smiling and looking youthful?” I replied, good genetic composition from my parents. Then, I gave another response and said, “It’s called an investment in yourself, for yourself, and those you love.” My father died when he was 93. He lived an abundantly healthy life. Several of the things he did in his life daily connected to the core denominator of a strong spiritual foundation. He walked everyday and he always ate breakfast. His process was before any of the known health systems. Oh! I forgot, castor oil was constant too. He was “old school” and a man of great intellect and wisdom. There is a challenge in living a healthier life, however, it is not impossible and you too can live a healthier life. But we are living in a society today where there is an abundance of just about everything—food, sports activities, health spas, resorts, and a propitiation for fast food restaurants. We have moved from the basic microwave quick fixes to fast foods that can be super-sized instantaneously. We are in the generational era of “want more”. We want more education, more promotions, more money, more assets, more this and more that. Who is who in what and who is not. We are grandmothers, mothers, daughters, wives, aunties, sisters and sister-in-law, caregivers, entrepreneurs, chief executive officers, volunteers, board of directors, ministers, choir directors, and the list goes on. Can you hear me now? Help me! I am beyond the “Superwoman Syndrome”, I am an emotional wreck, some going through menopause, others going through hormonal changes, weight gain, weight loss. What else can happen? I say to

you: I can hear you now! Calm down, you haven’t crashed yet and may I suggest a few life changes that you can implement to make your life healthier and joyful from the inside out. Sharing a process for you take a look at your life from a holistic perspective. It is our responsibility as individuals to eat healthy and be proactive in taking care of ourselves and our bodies which is our temple. When you commit to living a healthier life, it does not matter if there is or is not a universal healthcare plan in the U.S. Why? Because you are committing to living healthier and being proactive in taking necessary steps to facilitate a healthier you. “A Healthier You” a publication based on the dietary guidelines for Americans, suggests that there are three main components of living a healthier life. First, it’s about choices. Our daily intake of food and activity contribute to how we feel daily. Second, it’s about balance. Everyone needs to allocate more time in life to do things that make them happy, healthy and productive. Third, it’s about a healthy lifestyle. To make lifestyle changes effective, you must take small steps one day at a time. The Healthier Spool for Life consists of “The Eight Dimensions of Living a Healthier Life.” Why eight and not 10? Well the number eight signifies “new beginnings” in biblical studies. They are (1) Spiritual, (2) Relational, (3) Physical, (4) Mental, (5) Career, (6) Community, (7) Financial, and (8) Emotional. In addition, treat yourself to a spa for a massage and repeat positive affirmations everyday. You will be amazed at how self-talk and visualization will change your life in a positive way. inspiration T MASTER KEYS H E

of Life

By Pastor Mel Keyes

H

e said it himself. He made it clear: Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. [John 14:6 NKJV] Gone then, should be the days when we think that God is out to get us or to take away our joy. No, just the opposite; our father seeks for his children to learn and live what life is really all about. Even when he corrects us; it is for our benefit; so that we could experience life to the max. I thank God that within the last decade of my life, my heavenly father broke the cycle of my blindness helping me to see three master keys for opening up the vibrant life he had awaiting me. Just to think; it was right in front of my face all along. So, what is a life in him all about and how do you open that door? I submit to you that first and foremost, you’ll need the master key of “Ministry.” Your ministry is your service to the world. It is how you most add value to those much in need of your gifting that God has placed deeply within you. However, please don’t make the mistake of thinking your “ministry” is to be restricted to the sanctuary. God forbid. It is to bring God glory everywhere you go! It is the “light” that your father has entrusted to you to shine in those dark, dismal places where he seems to be absent to others. My friend when you show up things should change not just by what you say but by your gift of service; by virtue of the value

14

THINK DIFFERENTLY Fall 2016

that you add when you arrive. That is an essential master key for the life that God has ordained for you. Then also consider the master key of “entrepreneurship.” For the longest time, I lived confused. Why did I think so passionately about business when I knew I was called to ministry? Most told me, I should choose one of the other. After much failure and frustration I eventually succumbed to those around me striving to fit into a box that was never meant for me. I shut down everything entrepreneurial in nature within me for almost a decade until God opened my eyes and introduced me to me. I had to learn, just as in every gift; God gives them for a purpose. Lastly, if you really want to live life to the full; you’ll need the master key of leadership. For leadership in it’s essence is the service you render turned inside out. It is the amplification and multiplication of your value carried on in others that you mentor, coach and influence long after you have left the scene. Family, I speak life to you. Let’s live life to the full with these three master keys; “Ministry, Entrepreneurship and Leadership.”
