Serious Games Technology Designed to bridge the gap between knowledge and practical application of processes and procedures, Serious Games aim to create a pressured situation where previous training and knowledge transfer can be put to the test, without endangering the lives of learners. Gaming, particularly for the newest generations of seafarers, is pervasive to all areas of life what with the prevalence of smart phones, tablets and computers. Harnessing the skills required for video games and turning them into learning opportunities just makes sense. Enclosed – Safety in Enclosed Spaces is a video game developed from the existing Entry into Enclosed Spaces developed with Mines Rescue that takes the learners into a realistic scenario, measures their proficiency in an authentic, potentially life-threatening situation and assesses their knowledge base and reactions. Raal Harris, head of Videotel’s Multi-Media department is excited about this emerging training method, describing Serious Games as innovate tools that motivate the learner and ensure their performance is measurable. His presentation of the concept, featuring a look at Enclosed – Safety in Enclosed Spaces to the Nautical Institute at NW Kent College on 11th September 2013 was very well received.

Videotel Academy Course Recognised by IMarEST On 28 September 2013, Videotel Academy received the fabulous news that the Institute of Marine Engineering , Science & Technology (IMarEST) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Working Group was ‘most impressed by’ and has recognised the Marine Machinery Plant Management Course as ‘contributing to an individual member’s professional development requirements.’ Learning Management System (LMS) Manager Martyn Littell and course author Paul Russell of Thamesview Maritime Limited have worked hard on developing this course aimed at the professional development of engineers at sea and designed to prepare them for their flag state examinations.

Keeping busy... Videotel’s Production team have been busy, with the awards mentioned on this page, the huge Catering On Board Ship series from the front page, as well as the new and updated titles enclosed. In addition, our Senior Producer, Ron Branscombe, completed a video production for ExxonMobil Marine in October which was filmed in Singapore, featuring the first of their bunker barges to be fitted with a mass flow metering system, which is faster and more accurate than traditional tank dipping.

A Great Week for London Shipping September 2013 saw the shipping world flock to the capital for London International Shipping Week (LISW), with a packed programme of debates, seminars, meetings and events held across London. Key industry figures and government representatives from more than 50 countries attended over 60 events which were held the length and breadth of the capital and beyond. Videotel were amongst the first to see the potential of LISW and stepped up to the plate straight away, as one of the founding sponsors of the event. “When first mooted to us, we knew that the original concept of LISW was sound,” explained Nigel Cleave, CEO of Videotel. “However with such tremendous support from government and industry, LISW exceeded all expectations and has truly earned its place in the shipping industry’s calendar of must-attend events.” “The inaugural LISW blossomed into an incredibly well-supported event that brought the global shipping industry firmly together. Networking was of the highest standard and, as a sponsor, we were delighted to have been part of such an important event, providing a welcome opportunity to spread the Videotel message so effectively.” The week culminated in a sell-out conference, and Gala Dinner for over

Energy Efficiency and Ships - making understanding and compliance easier

For 40 years Videotel has been listening to the requirements of seafarers. Feedback is extremely important to Videotel as it is how we decide what programmes, courses and CBTs are needed by the industry, what training and assessments are required to meet new or changing regulations and how we can continue to meet the training needs of the world’s seafarers and shore-based personnel. To this end, we are publishing a series of White Papers on our Linkedin site (www.linkedin.com/company/videotelmarine-international). Please take the time to let us know how we can help by commenting on LinkedIn, sending emails to oncourse-helpdesk@videotel.com, or contacting the Videotel International Representative in your region.

With the release of the IMO’s new guidelines (soon to be regulations) on energy-efficient ship design and operation, Indra Nath Bose’s new book, titled Energy Efficiency and Ships, has entered the market at an opportune moment. Comprehensively divided into two main parts, Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP), the book includes a brief history of the IMO’s efforts to combat greenhouse gas emissions, summaries of various guidelines developed to aid in those efforts and a section on Energy Efficeincy Operational Indicator. Bose’s text provides a detailed explanation and practical guideline for Energy Efficiency Regulations of Chapter 4 of Annex VI of MARPOL Convention. The intention is to make compliance easier among ship designers, ship builders and ship operators by providing all necessary background information and rationale for the regulations. NEW PROGRAMS & COURSES Bitesize information on some of our most important new productions. Please see the enclosed sheets for more details. ISO50001 Energy Management Training Course – This sevenmodule course is aimed at personnel on ships and in the shore based offices of shipping companies implementing an Energy Management System. It teaches them about the rationale, the practicalities and the procedures that are essential to Energy Management Systems. COLREGS & IALA Buoyage Training Course – This course examines in great detail two essential topics for deck officers and crew, Collision Regulations and IALA buoyage. Experience and investigation of casualties indicates that the understanding of and adherence to the rules is not as comprehensive as would be expected. Catering on board ship series – Healthy food is a vital part of all seafarers’ welfare on board. This series addresses the new MLC 2006 regulations, the importance of food safety, the relationship between diet and health, the planning and production of healthier and more varied meals, within the provisioning budget. Videotel Academy - Marine Machinery Plant Management – This course provides training on the best practices and rocedures that junior engineering officers should observe when fulfilling their duties on board with the further aim of facilitating their career progression. Alcohol Beware! A Seafarer’s Guide – This updated training package looks at the potential harmful effects of alcohol and stresses the need for seafarers to drink moderately at all times. Drugs - Way Off Course – This updated training package looks at the potential harmful effects of drugs, stresses the need for seafarers to avoid them at all times and the risk to the livelihood of the individual, to the ship and other crew members. Drugs and Alcohol - A Manager’s Guide – This new training

package, aimed directly at management ashore and on board, has been produced in support of Videotel’s existing programmes on the subject of drugs and alcohol abuse. Managers need to be made aware of their responsibilities and encouraged to put in place an effective drugs and alcohol policy. Deep Water Ship Handling – Good ship handling in deep water means monitoring those factors which cannot be controlled and managing those that can, such as the ship’s speed, course, schedule, load factors and other variables. This programme looks at some of the situations ships and their crews may have to face and how to overcome them. Intervention - Do The Right Thing! – In spite of all the improvements in design safety features and procedures introduced on to ships, near misses and catastrophic accidents at sea keep happening. This programme is about the importance of speaking up when there is a concern for the safety of the ship and/or crew. Leadership and training courses – provides essential knowledge and useful theory not only on the skills needed by senior managers at sea, but also includes skills required by junior officers and acts as a stepping stone towards more formal management training. Individual modules, How to Communicate in Writing, How to Communicate Verbally and How to Manage your Time, cover practical, everyday leadership and management skills. Making the Difference - Passenger Mustering and Crowd Control – This programme looks at all aspects of passenger mustering, in particular the flow of passengers on stairways and the care and control of passengers once they are assembled in their designated muster stations. Say No to Bullying, Say No to Harassment! – Companies need to provide clear guidelines that harassment and bullying of any sort is not acceptable. This training package clearly spells out the effect on the lives of victims and suggests how companies should go about eliminating such behaviour. The Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) (Edition 2) – This updated training package takes the SEEMP and its implementation as a platform to examine energy efficiency measures on ships.
