Programme Coordinator, Pontis Foundation My Bachelor’s course in Criminology and International Politics seemed quite rare and offered a mixture of disciplines showing us correlations between crime and poverty. With our lecturers and classmates, we spent much time debating, discussing and sharing ideas. This motivated and pushed me to learn a lot on my own. It taught me to think more independently and critically, putting emphasis on ability to analyse, which is crucial for effective international development project management, which I wanted to focus on. “I completed my BEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering course at the University of Huddersfield and straight after, I have been offered a PhD fee-waiver scholarship which I happily accepted. My research was about developing a novel method for non-invasive blood flow measurement. Following this, I managed to secure a job as an electronic engineer at Dyson research and development (R&D). “I have spent 9 years at the University of Huddersfield for both of my degrees and I am lucky to witness the massive transformation that the University went through including new buildings, facilities and services. I had such a great experience at the University, and with the help of the University teaching and support staff, I acquired the skills I needed to allow me to join the industrial world.

Aside from my studies, I enjoyed very much the vibrant and friendly atmosphere on campus. I always had passion for sports and particularly volleyball and the University did not let me down. The University helped me to start the volleyball club where I competed in local leagues and won several trophies. The University also organised events throughout the years such as International Sport and Food days. All those sports and social activities gave me the opportunity to meet new students and make friends.

Hong Yen Au Vietnam â&#x20AC;&#x153;I chose International Design Marketing and Communications as my graduate programme because the programme was the perfect match of what I was looking for which had both design and Communications. The University of Huddersfield was also the only university which started the programme in January, which suited me well.

Going to the University of Huddersfield has been a great experience in my life. During my time at the University, I was taught and mentored by knowledgeable and well respected professors. Courses were built based on one-to-one models where every student had the valuable time for their university projects.

Before the University of Huddersfield, my background was in Graphic Design. When I looked for a good university to further my education, the University of Huddersfield was the right decision due to its well-designed programs. They are comprehensive with limited numbers of students. Also, the programmes were built for different interests and learning methodologies.

Every class was made of in-class sections, research and group work. After graduation, the knowledge and skills I gained through the university have helped me in many ways with my daily work.

During my time there, the University always provided the students with up to date technologies and learning materials. Access to the library was 24 hour with an incredible variety of books and unlimited online courses which were vital for students to complete their assignments. The staff were friendly and helpful whenever I had any questions or concerns.

“I came across the internship through the University’s Careers and Employability Service. My role at Visual Systems Healthcare involved starting and managing the new Marketing, Research and Development Department. This internship led to a full-time job managing the Marketing, Research and Development Department. It improved my confidence greatly and gave me the freedom to try different approaches.

During my internship I was given the freedom of making decisions right from the start, which not only helped build up my confidence, but also gave me the real industry feedback I needed. One of the first decisions I made was to design a new brand identity and a new website. I was researching, designing and testing marketing strategies whilst building up the structure of my department. The experience I gained through this complex work is invaluable to me.

I had the chance of practicing a broad range of skills, which I now like to believe improved immensely, giving me the confidence that I can undertake any challenge in any role involving Market Research, Digital Marketing, Graphic Design and Product Development.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;On my placement year I provided support with the HR operations for Sia Fibral Ltd. and company sister â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Sia Abrafoam Ltd. During my placement year I have learned what an organisational culture is, how a company functions in terms of processes and legal requirements, what it means to be a valuable part of a team and also how to effectively communicate in a business. Along with that, I have gained friends, I had a lovely time and I used to go to work with the smile on my face, knowing that I belonged there and I could make a difference. Throughout the year, I have developed my communication skills, gained confidence, improved my overall HR knowledge and learning processes critical to the HR position. I also developed my IT skills and developed creativity by being allowed to work on projects both on my own and in a team.

I have significantly improved my organisational skills as I have been organising our exhibition stands for the events we attend. Furthermore, being in charge of the Marketing budget has brought the need for me to use Microsoft Excel on a daily basis as a tool to monitor expenses and payments. Working with colleagues from Europe, I often have to proof-read content for website, product bulletins which are sent to customers etc. I’ve been involved in the process of launching the new website of the company and I was responsible for updating it on a daily basis. Additionally, I have been trained to use a new emailing system called Addemar. I am using this as a tool to send important information to our customers such as product bulletins, introducing new product/pack sizes etc. There is no doubt the that UK is famous for being one of the world’s best spots for further education, therefore, coming to the UK for getting a degree in Marketing has been a goal of mine I set at the age of 13. In addition, I am a person who likes to leave her comfort zone, a person who looks for new experiences and constantly challenges herself. I just fell in love with the University when I came to see it. The members of staff are really friendly and helpful. Tutors are very accommodating and always happy to help. It was the best decision I could make and was definitely worth all the effort I put into creating my portfolio. This work experience helped me to develop my skills as well as to learn new ones. I was given many opportunities to gain more responsibility on projects, some I would run independently. Half way through my time at I-AM I completed an entire project for a restaurant on my own. My role was to be responsible for the samples library, creating sample boards and mood boards, helping other designers with their work, doing plans as well as visuals, meeting and building up relationships with suppliers. From this experience I have learned how to be organised at work and how to manage my time in the most efficient way. I also understood many things about working in a team and exchanging our ideas with others. My placement year has also helped me to understand the design process, to consider drawing details and gave me a big knowledge about materials as well as the design software. I have also been given the opportunity to work and speak with suppliers developing my communication skills. With these perks I am now ready for my final year. We are an alternative rock band based in Huddersfield and started playing together in early 2015. So far we’ve done gigs in the North of the UK, Lithuania and France. We all enjoy playing gigs, traveling and making music together. We are recording our debut album in the University studios with help from fellow students. Overall this whole experience helped us gain a better understanding in how the music industry works in the real world and how to make money from it.

If not for the University we would not have had enough material to record an album by now. Also the recording facilities are one of the best in the country and during our time here we can record as much as we want for free. In Huddersfield there’s a really good acoustic music scene, plenty of events and nice people that do arts and music. My favourite part of the campus are the Green Rooms in the Technology building. Nice recording studios, plenty of equipment, you don’t have to book a lot of it in advance.

I chose to study at the University of Huddersfield because there’s a great course for Music Technology for which a lot of students from around the world come here to study. There are also quite a few well-known professional tutors in the University. My time at the University of Huddersfield helped me to get a better understanding of how the industry works. I have met quite a lot of talented musicians, experts on music technology, people who are willing to help with my work, and wanting to collaborate.

In 1990, she started her academic life as an MSc student. She obtained her PhD in measurement science in 1995. She was awarded a Chair in 2003, a DSc for Precision Metrology in 2007 and the director of the EPSRC Centre in advanced metrology 2011. Jane possesses both industrial and academic backgrounds in measurement science and precision engineering and enjoys creative research moving the subject forward. Jane’s research involves two major aspects: optical interferometry technology for fast on/in-line surface/geometry measurement; and mathematical modelling with characterisation technology for surface metrology. Besides this, she enjoys philosophical research in this subject area, successfully leading a Paradigm shifts review in surface metrology (Proc. Roy. Soc. A, 2007) and a 2011 Royal Society Discussion Meeting “Ultra Precision Engineering – from Physics to Manufacturing” (Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 2012).

Jane has published over 230 papers, author/ co-authored eight books and several patents on measurement science/surface metrology. Currently, she holds a prestigious Frontier Research Programme (Advanced Scheme) sponsored by the European Research Council for well-established word-leading researchers. Top 10 in England for teaching excellence* Professor David Bamford Professor of Operations Management David is an experienced industrialist/academic with multiple publications to his name, most recently a co-authored book (Essential Guide to Operations Management: Concepts and Case Notes, 2010). Professor Barbara Conway Professor of Pharmaceutics Following her first degree in Pharmacy at Queen’s University, Belfast, she registered as a pharmacist in 1990 and practised full-time in community pharmacy until joining Aston University in Birmingham in 1992 to undertake a PhD. Her PhD research project at Aston was in the pharmaceutics and drug delivery field, focusing on micro-encapsulation for delivery of biopharmaceuticals. Following completion of her PhD studies in 1995, she was employed in various posts at Aston University, including lecturer and senior lecturer and was Director of the mPharm programme prior to moving to the University of Huddersfield in 2010 as Professor of Pharmaceutics.

During this time, she also became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and supervised projects on the application of e-learning technologies in Pharmacy. She was also a Medici Fellow, specialising in driving forward innovation within the university sector and holds several patents in the pharmaceutical area. She has supervised over 20 PhD students and on-going research programmes focus on chrontherapeutic delivery and delivery of antimicrobials, novel excipients for drug delivery, the mechanical properties of pharmaceuticals and excipients and the development of chewing gum delivery systems. She has a number of successful collaborations with other universities, NHS and the pharmaceutical industry leading to publications and development of new products.

Inspiring, Innovative, International. Professor Nicholas Temple Professor of Architecture Nicholas joined the University of Huddersfield as Professor of Architecture in April 2012, having previously taught at the University of Lincoln as both Professor of Architecture and Head of the School of Architecture. Born in Australia, Temple studied architecture at Cambridge University and has a PhD on the subject of architecture and urbanism in early 16th Century Rome. He was a Rome Scholar in Architecture (1986-88) at the British School at Rome, and recently was awarded a Paul Mellon Rome Fellow (2012).

This examination transgresses the conventional boundaries between architecture, painting, inscription, cartography and sculpture, incorporating broader inter-disciplinary research across historical periods and regions.

Temple’s recent research and scholarship focuses on the historical inter-relationships between architecture, topography, ceremony and geography, examining territorial, symbolic and ideological exchanges between interiors, buildings, cities and regions.

At the same time Temple has engaged in detailed research on the study of architecture as a humanistic discipline, examining in particular connections between architecture, language and pictorial representation. This research has highlighted how the humanistic tradition of linguistic enquiry, during the early modern period, served as a critical backdrop to the emergence of modern forms of Encyclopedism and the increasing interest in the possibility of both a universal linguistic system and an architectural language.

Much of the research has been focused on the city of Rome, as-evidenced in his numerous publications and in Temple’s recent award as the Paul Mellon Rome Fellow at the British School at Rome (2012).

Professor Monty Adkins Professor of Experimental Electronic Music Monty has created installations, concert and audio-visual works, and a number of collaborations with contemporary performers. His works have been commissioned by Ina-GRM, IRCAM, BBC Radio 3, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (HCMF), SpACE-Net, ZKM (Centre for Art and Media, Karlsruhe) and Sonic Arts Network (SAN), among others. For his oeuvre he has been awarded over 15 international prizes including the Stockholm Electronic Arts Award (Sweden), Grand Prize at Musica Nova (Prague, Czech republic), and five prizes at the Bourges International Electro-Acoustic Music Competition (France).

Having read music at Pembroke College where he studied French mediaeval and Italian renaissance music, Adkins then studied electronic music with Jonty Harrison at the University of Birmingham where he performed across Europe with the Birmingham Electro-Acoustic Sound Theatre (BEAST), and Simon Waters at the University of East Anglia. He is currently Professor of Experimental Electronic Music at the University of Huddersfield. Adkins is also active as a writer and concert curator. He completed his first book in 2011 on the relationship between art and music (Shibusa – Extracting Beauty), a second on the music of Roberto Gerhard in 2013. The game revolves around a fictional fruit juice company that is running at a loss and confronted by a wide range of business problems.

Winner: The Fresh Connection Teams which play The Fresh Connection must attempt to turn the company around and return it to profit. The game is widely seen in the business world as a powerful training tool and the University of Huddersfield was the first in the UK to embed The Fresh Connection into its courses. "One of the most valuable skills I have developed during my Advertising and Marketing Communications course at Huddersfield is the ability of thinking both creatively and very strategically, which I believe is very important for this particular industry.

My 4 years at the University have been very diverse. I had the opportunity to undertake an Erasmus exchange programme in Paris and a 12 months placement in a great international company working as part of their e-commerce team.

My course gave me the possibility to be part of a huge international competition, L'Oreal Brandstorm, where skills such as team work, strategic thinking, creativity, planning, and innovation is being challenged and you get to have a lot of fun and meet professionals from an exciting industry. Working with my classmates was a real opportunity to put into practice what we had been taught and enjoy this experience together.

The Student Leadership Awards aim is to help students take the next step after University and into working life by giving students a complete portfolio that represents key graduate competencies that employers are looking for. There are several levels of the award to work towards and those that display exceptional dedication are eligible for the Vice-Chancellor's Award.

Through her portfolio Alizée demonstrated excellent examples of her involvement in student life, but she was also able to accurately reflect how she developed her skills in the participation of these activities, and understand the positive impact her actions have on others.

Vivian Chan Winner: Yip Sau Kuen Award

Hong Kong The Yip Sau Kuen Award is now bestowed on a social work student who has shown outstanding personal resilience to complete their studies. The award was instituted following the death of Cecilia Yip, who was a Huddersfield student in the 1990’s. She returned to Hong Kong, where she developed a successful social work career.

PhD student Katerina Alba won the 2013 Institute of Food Science and Technology North of England Young Scientist Competition. Katerina's presentation titled; ‘The use of pectin extract from okra pods as an emulsifier in acidic food environments’ was judged to be the best presentation in the postgraduate category of the competition. I worked continuously on this project since my Master’s degree and developed considerable expertise in the field of food hydrocolloids. During my first year as a PhD student I managed to extract material and characterise it. The IFST Young Scientists Award is the first prize for my work on okra pectins. “The recognition of my research encourages me to move forward and meet new challenges.”

The Students’ Union Huddersfield Students’ Union (SU) is the home of student life on campus. Accommodation Preferred, recommended and approved halls

Where will I live? It’s the question we get asked the most. Well, there are lots of options to choose from. The first thing you’ll discover when looking for accommodation is that we don’t offer accommodation directly. We do that through DIGS Student, a privately owned company that specialises in providing high quality, affordable accommodation and who are recommended and approved by us. DIGS operate Storthes Hall Park Student Village and Ashenhurst Student Houses. Both offer excellent facilities and a community of like-minded students, so you’ll be getting to know new friends in no time.

Storthes Hall Park This accommodation and community provides a lively environment to live in. There are 1386 bedrooms within the student village in a beautiful location. Each bedroom has en-suite facilities and you can choose from a range of room types and sizes to suit all budgets and needs. You will be in a flat with up to seven other students sharing a kitchen/dining area. Great if you want to impress your new friends with your culinary skills.

There is never a dull moment at Storthes Hall. At the newly refurbished “Venue” you can enjoy our games room, gaming console room, study area and cinema room. The perfect place to meet with firends. Our on site amenities also include a gym, shop and laundrette. Commuting to University couldn’t be

easier with a regular shuttle bus that runs between the University and Storthes Hall seven days a week and takes around 15 minutes. A bus pass is available for a small one-off fee that entitles you to travel for free. The accommodation rates include all your bills meaning no extra hidden costs.

International Study Centre Degree preparation for international students The International Study Centre (ISC) offers English language and academic preparation for international students who do not currently meet the University’s direct entry requirements. Undergraduate Course Accelerator science MSc

The International Institute for Accelerator Applications Particle accelerators are well known for their role at the frontiers of science, as in the discovery of the Higgs Boson. They also make a surprisingly important contribution to everyday life, from making better smartphones to treating cancer. The Huddersfield International Institute for Accelerator Applications (IIAA) brings together research in accelerator science and engineering, from low energy devices in its own laboratories eg. Electronic Beam Ion Source (EBIS) and Medium Energy Ion Scattering (MEIS), to the highest energy machines at sites around the world, including the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva and the European Spallation Source in Lund. Research staff link with others across the school and the University on a wide range of projects including FFAGS (Fixed-Field Alternating Gradients), proton therapy, and ADSRS (Accelerator Driven Subcritical Reactors). Researchers also work at national and international centres (CERN, TRIUMF, ESS, ILL, ESRF, ISIS) and play a strong role in The Thorium Energy Association (ThorEA) organisation to encourage the construction of Thoriumfuelled ADSRS. Tier 4 Doctorate Extension Scheme This scheme was introduced in April 2013 to allow students completing a doctorate-level qualification at a higher education institution in the UK to apply to stay in the UK on a Tier 4 visa for 12 months after they complete their course. The Doctorate Extension Scheme is designed to allow full-time Tier 4 students who complete a PhD or other doctorate a longer period to find work with a Tier 2 employer, set up as an entrepreneur, or to gain practical work experience in their field. Applicants will be supported and monitored by the University. There is no limit to the number of places available. All students seeking sponsorship under the doctorate extension scheme must meet the University’s requirements as well as the Home Office eligibility criteria.

Finding a PhD supervisor

All international research students can benefit from English language training to ensure they can reach their full academic potential. Depending on your needs we can support you in a variety of forms including one-to-one advisory sessions, small group workshops and short courses.

The supervision of your research will be conducted by your main supervisor, who will be a suitably experienced member of our academic staff, assisted by a team. Supervisors are there to support and offer you guidance throughout your PhD, helping you to write your best possible thesis.

Research degrees

To give you the best chance of acceptance onto your chosen research degree, it is strongly recommended that you make contact with a potential supervisor to discuss with them how your research interests may be compatible with their own interests and experience. Applicant Portal We will confirm by email when we have received your application and send you account details for our Applicant Portal. Here you can track your application’s progress and gain access to other useful facilities and information. You will need to quickly accept our offer of a place so that we can reserve a place for you on the course before it fills up. Please read any conditions of your offer carefully and let us know when you have met them, because without them we cannot proceed any further. For example, you may need to send us copies of your results or pay a tuition fee deposit.

Entry requirements We accept a very wide range of international qualifications and when you apply for a place, your application will be examined by one of our Admissions Tutors who will assess your academic qualifications and advise if an offer can be made to you. This will be confirmed to you by email and on your Applicant Portal. Details of the Portal will be confirmed to you once you submit your application.

English language skills For students whose first language is not English, the University requires you to have a recognised qualification in English language before you can begin the course.

Acceptable English language qualifications The qualification the University normally requires is: .0 in the International English 6 Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent Please note that some courses require a higher level of english, therefore please see the specific course details on the website for guidance. Prospectus information We will always try to deliver your course as described in this prospectus. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below. We review all optional modules each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let students know in good time the options available for them to choose for the following year. We will only change core modules for a course if it is necessary for us to do so, for example to maintain course accreditation. We will let you know about any such changes as soon as possible, usually before you begin the relevant academic year. Students’ Union membership Under the 1994 education act, students at all UK universities have the right to join, or not to join, the Students’ Union. There is no membership fee. If you choose not to join you have the right not to be disadvantaged; however you are not entitled to vote, take part in elections, or hold any office. The following arrangements apply in order that non-Union members are not disadvantaged: on-members are welcome N to take part in the activities of Affiliated Clubs and Societies on payment of the appropriate subscription. How to get to Huddersfield Whether travelling by air, rail or road, the University of Huddersfield is easily accessible.

Air The closest major airport to the University is Manchester International Airport, which connects with most International cities, and where we operate our ‘Meet and Greet’ service. You can fly directly to Manchester from many countries, or make a short connection from London Heathrow (British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, etc), Frankfurt (Germany, Lufthansa), Paris (France, Air France), Amsterdam (Netherlands, KLM) and Zurich (Switzerland, Swiss Air), which are all within about one hour of Manchester by air.
