Bulgaria “It’s very important to be able to work while I am studying in the UK. Not only does it help to support you through your economical university life but also gives you great life experience.

Working for a global brand such as Mamas & Papas has helped to develop my communication skills and team working abilities. My job allows me to get involved in decision-making processes that help consumers make the right purchase for their bundles of joy.”

Alina Chiriceanu Romania

Interviewer, The Leadership Factor Product Design BA(Hons)

“The education provided by the University is at the highest level and the employability rate after graduation is one of the best in the UK. Nearly all students have some sort of part-time job. In my first year, the first term was all about getting used to the schedule, getting to know my colleagues, the campus and the town. In the second term I started looking for a part-time job and shortly after I was offered a position. It’s a job which does not interfere with my studies. I am only working a few evenings a week and I earn enough to support myself.“

As a mature student it is important for me to have a part-time job, which will cover my living expenses.

Latvia “After university, although it was fantastic to work for the Volkswagen group in a team of 30 other supply analysts, I knew that I wanted to be passionate about what I’m doing and although I enjoyed my responsibilities-shipping car tools wasn’t for me. I wanted to get meaning in what I do – therefore Medical Devices Supply Chain felt a much better fit. Johnson & Johnson has an amazing attitude towards their customers and everything that J&J do.

Sales and Operations Planning Coordinator, Johnson and Johnson me saved more than €2m for the company. It was quite a big deal for me as a student to have an opportunity not only to learn but also to prove myself and improve by real business processes.

So at the end I found my perfect fit – I wanted to have a broad set of responsibilities, to feel accepted and appreciated within a team. To be given a chance to do challenging projects that can make a difference and to work for a company that has strong ‘CREDO’ values and a great attitude all across the business. Taking a work placement is definitely a win-win deal. In exchange for one year of your life you get a really professional experience, fast development opportunities and a clear understanding about many things relevant in the future. On top of that, you get the opportunity to live in another country, to travel around, learn additional language and meet some really awesome people. The University’s logistics degree placement gave me the opportunity to work for J&J’s directors which meant working in a highly professional environment, with many responsibilities and a chance to lead projects and teams. Ivana Uličná Slovakia “The quality education provided at the University of Huddersfield has had a very positive impact on my career and I believe it prepared me for real world situations. The lectures, supervisions and the facilities available are all on a very high level. The professionality of the University staff teaches the students how to work and act as professionals themselves.

Programme Coordinator, Pontis Foundation My Bachelor’s course in Criminology and International Politics seemed quite rare and offered a mixture of disciplines showing us correlations between crime and poverty. With our lecturers and classmates, we spent much time debating, discussing and sharing ideas. This motivated and pushed me to learn a lot on my own. It taught me to think more independently and critically, putting emphasis on ability to analyse, which is crucial for effective international development project management, which I wanted to focus on. My master’s by research degree allowed me to look into international development in greater depth. It also required me to take responsibility for my own work and improved my ability to plan ahead. Moreover, I appreciated the opportunity to develop within a multinational environment, learning about other cultures. I think all of these skills were crucial in securing my dream job in international development and the University was where it all began.”

United Kingdom “I am from Huddersfield so maybe I am biased but it is a great town with friendly people. During the course of my degree in Communication Arts with Spanish I got involved in some good projects in local radio and television that inspired me towards a career in sports journalism, as well as getting to spend a year working in Oviedo, Spain.

MotoGP Presenter, BBC Sport This gave me the opportunity to pursue my early career in Barcelona, which eventually led back to the BBC. I don’t think you fully appreciate the opportunities presented to you whilst at university and how close they are to the real world. The biggest lesson is that you must apply yourself because nobody else will do it for you. As in life, you will only get out what you are prepared to put in.”

Huddersfield is a good size and really gave you that feel of a university town. My time at the University has had an impact on my career and is certainly where it all began. The course seemed unusual and offered a mixture of disciplines including linguistics, French literature and mediarelations among other areas. I and some other students spent a year in a French university in the city of Besançon which furthered my studies of French television and culture.” Sally has been working for the BBC for over 15 years, starting as a broadcast journalist at her local radio station.

After I came back from my placement, in the final year the module tutor gave me amazing support for all types of hospitality projects and dissertation, and through that I have learnt new skills by working on various projects.

This whole experience helped me to develop my technical and educational knowledge, which supported me to become more confident and gave me the opportunity to fully discover my ability and perform as the best.

The course was so helpful and the University tutor prepared me very well in communication, and theory in Hospitality Management, which helped to get a graduate job with JW Marriott, Indianapolis USA.

Electronics Engineer, Dyson

“I completed my BEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering course at the University of Huddersfield and straight after, I have been offered a PhD fee-waiver scholarship which I happily accepted. My research was about developing a novel method for non-invasive blood flow measurement. Following this, I managed to secure a job as an electronic engineer at Dyson research and development (R&D). “I have spent 9 years at the University of Huddersfield for both of my degrees and I am lucky to witness the massive transformation that the University went through including new buildings, facilities and services. I had such a great experience at the University, and with the help of the University teaching and support staff, I acquired the skills I needed to allow me to join the industrial world.

Aside from my studies, I enjoyed very much the vibrant and friendly atmosphere on campus. I always had passion for sports and particularly volleyball and the University did not let me down. The University helped me to start the volleyball club where I competed in local leagues and won several trophies. The University also organised events throughout the years such as International Sport and Food days. All those sports and social activities gave me the opportunity to meet new students and make friends.

Aftab Afzal Oman “My electrical engineering degree proved invaluable for developing my skills because when you start your first job it can often take time before you are given the responsibility to work on the high profile projects. But because of their confidence in the skills I had obtained from my degree here at Huddersfield, from day one, they have had me working on the important assignments, which is great. I have been involved in certification of Trent XWB EEC which has been installed on Trent XWB engine for Airbus A350. The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB, specifically designed for operation on the Airbus A350 XWB family, is the most efficient large civil aerospace engine ever produced.

Electronics Engineer, Rolls-Royce If you are a non-UK national this can often prove very difficult but with the help of the University's Computing and Engineering Placement Unit, in the third year of my BEng degree I took part in a really successful one year work-placement as an industrial engineer where I got hands on experience in my chosen industry. This shows just how successful the University is at helping students get into work during and after their studies. ”

Hong Yen Au Vietnam “I chose International Design Marketing and Communications as my graduate programme because the programme was the perfect match of what I was looking for which had both design and Communications. The University of Huddersfield was also the only university which started the programme in January, which suited me well.

Going to the University of Huddersfield has been a great experience in my life. During my time at the University, I was taught and mentored by knowledgeable and well respected professors. Courses were built based on one-to-one models where every student had the valuable time for their university projects.

Before the University of Huddersfield, my background was in Graphic Design. When I looked for a good university to further my education, the University of Huddersfield was the right decision due to its well-designed programs. They are comprehensive with limited numbers of students. Also, the programmes were built for different interests and learning methodologies.

Every class was made of in-class sections, research and group work. After graduation, the knowledge and skills I gained through the university have helped me in many ways with my daily work.

During my time there, the University always provided the students with up to date technologies and learning materials. Access to the library was 24 hour with an incredible variety of books and unlimited online courses which were vital for students to complete their assignments. The staff were friendly and helpful whenever I had any questions or concerns.

Last but not least, while my previous universities required students to memorise everything, the University of Huddersfield allowed and expected students to explore and think on their own. I heartily recommend the University of Huddersfield to any student looking for a comprehensive yet comfortable graduate educational programme."

Product Design BA(Hons) Intern at Visual Systems Healthcare

“I came across the internship through the University’s Careers and Employability Service. My role at Visual Systems Healthcare involved starting and managing the new Marketing, Research and Development Department. This internship led to a full-time job managing the Marketing, Research and Development Department. It improved my confidence greatly and gave me the freedom to try different approaches.

During my internship I was given the freedom of making decisions right from the start, which not only helped build up my confidence, but also gave me the real industry feedback I needed. One of the first decisions I made was to design a new brand identity and a new website. I was researching, designing and testing marketing strategies whilst building up the structure of my department. The experience I gained through this complex work is invaluable to me.

I had the chance of practicing a broad range of skills, which I now like to believe improved immensely, giving me the confidence that I can undertake any challenge in any role involving Market Research, Digital Marketing, Graphic Design and Product Development.

The University of Huddersfield offers the greatest international student experience and has one of the highest rates of employability. The Product Design course is also one of the top rated courses in the UK. The set of skills I have gained throughout my studies are just in line with what the industry is looking for. I have made many friends during the International campus events, and I have had the chance to organise some of the Romanian Society’s events as well. I have made many friends and I had the chance to learn about other cultures. Huddersfield provides great student experience, top level education and a high employability rate.”

I am using this as a tool to send important information to our customers such as product bulletins, introducing new product/pack sizes etc. There is no doubt the that UK is famous for being one of the world’s best spots for further education, therefore, coming to the UK for getting a degree in Marketing has been a goal of mine I set at the age of 13. In addition, I am a person who likes to leave her comfort zone, a person who looks for new experiences and constantly challenges herself. I just fell in love with the University when I came to see it. The members of staff are really friendly and helpful. Tutors are very accommodating and always happy to help. During the placement ‘hunting’ process the members of the Placement Unit in the Business School were extremely supportive.

Poland BA (Hons) Interior Design Junior Interior Designer at I-AM Associates “Working for this company was an amazing and unforgettable experience! It was the best decision I could make and was definitely worth all the effort I put into creating my portfolio. This work experience helped me to develop my skills as well as to learn new ones. I was given many opportunities to gain more responsibility on projects, some I would run independently. Half way through my time at I-AM I completed an entire project for a restaurant on my own. My role was to be responsible for the samples library, creating sample boards and mood boards, helping other designers with their work, doing plans as well as visuals, meeting and building up relationships with suppliers. From this experience I have learned how to be organised at work and how to manage my time in the most efficient way. I also understood many things about working in a team and exchanging our ideas with others. My placement year has also helped me to understand the design process, to consider drawing details and gave me a big knowledge about materials as well as the design software. I have also been given the opportunity to work and speak with suppliers developing my communication skills. With these perks I am now ready for my final year. I choose to study at the University of Huddersfield because of the course I was interested in. It is one of the leaders in commercial and retail design in the country. This has given me the opportunity to learn at the highest standards, to become a good designer and to be confident in finding a job after graduation. The environment is very friendly for the students. They have everything they need here and are still able to save some money. My time at the University of Huddersfield was great and I want to make the last year even better. Thanks to the tutors and their hard work, I gained all essential skills to start working in the industry. I learned how to be organised, responsible and selfmotivated. I made so many friends at the University and I hope we will meet many times in the future or even that we will have an opportunity to work together."

Batyr Ospanov Kazakhstan “I graduated with a degree in Transport design from the University of Huddersfield. My company is a young, but rapidly developing company based in the heart of Almaty City, Kazakhstan. In 2015 we were awarded the prestigious Luxury Lifestyle award in the category of Best Interior design studio. The event was held in Dubai and has been officially partnered and sponsored by Audi Corporate.

I believe that the degree at Huddersfield gave me a broad variety of skills and knowledge to be successful in the creative industry.

I have had a very broad experience with the leading companies that are based in London, Italy and Monaco. After graduating I worked in the field of super yacht design, private jets and interior design on large-scale residential projects. The short-term internships turned into successful employment that lasted for almost 3 years. Not only did I get the extensive and valuable experience to develop professionally, but I was inspired to create a design company focused on luxury segment in my homeland. During the operating years the company had a great opportunity to design luxurious jewellery and perfume retails shops, high end luxury apartments and villas in Kazakhstan and Central Europe. I believe that the degree at Huddersfield gave me a broad variety of skills and knowledge to be successful in the creative industry.

Founder/Designer, Batyr Ospanov Designs "The employers were amazed on the amount of input that I was giving into the design process during my work experiences. I can't forget how at the end of the first week of a short internship in one of the companies the director offered me a full time position. During the employment years I always dreamt of running my own company and just couldn't wait long time for it. When I decided to work for myself and establish a proper company I was criticised by some experts due to little experience at the field and lack of financial stability. I agree it is very scary to start your own company; you make mistakes and run crazy sometimes. But it is such a great feeling when you see your clients with happy faces using bespoke products and interior spaces which are results of combined creativity and clients wishes. For those who wish to run their own businesses I would suggest to gain some experience from the best companies in the market, even for free as you are investing in yourself. Do not stay for long time, try to learn as much as you can and find a perfect time to leave and start at your own. I think employers would hate me after reading this!" batyrospanov.com

Dr Zeus Sosa Mejia Managing Director, Synergy Biotech

Mexico “My experience at the University of Huddersfield was good as I was able to learn state-of-the-art techniques in microbiology and molecular biology which were the foundation of my research. It was not easy, as I was coming from an engineering background, these novel methodologies were a whole new world that I had to explore, understand and apply quickly to succeed in my project. Fortunately, I had good and patient supervisors and laboratory technicians whom were utterly helpful. The experience and knowledge I got helped me to obtain a position as post doctorate in Food microbiology at the University of Wageningen, Holland in less than two weeks after passing my viva.

Outside the laboratory I also had such a great experience at Huddersfield. I travelled extensively around the UK and Europe, joined the boxing club at the University and made some good Yorkshire friends. After finishing my post doc, I decided to come back to Mexico and start my own business: Synergy BioTech® which is a consultancy agency in food science and technology and a food testing laboratory. After two years of hard work, I now have four employees. We are about to obtain the ISO 17025 certification for the laboratory and have some high profile international companies as clients. In conclusion, I very much enjoyed my time at the University of Huddersfield, I have a huge appreciation of the Yorkshire/British culture and people, obtained useful skills, knowledge, experience and vision to come back to my homeland as a scientist and entrepreneur.” synergy-biotech.com

Terra Fin (Alternative rock band from Huddersfield)

I chose to study at the University of Huddersfield because there’s a great course for Music Technology

34

We are an alternative rock band based in Huddersfield and started playing together in early 2015. So far we’ve done gigs in the North of the UK, Lithuania and France. We all enjoy playing gigs, traveling and making music together. We are recording our debut album in the University studios with help from fellow students. Overall this whole experience helped us gain a better understanding in how the music industry works in the real world and how to make money from it.

If not for the University we would not have had enough material to record an album by now. Also the recording facilities are one of the best in the country and during our time here we can record as much as we want for free. In Huddersfield there’s a really good acoustic music scene, plenty of events and nice people that do arts and music. My favourite part of the campus are the Green Rooms in the Technology building. Nice recording studios, plenty of equipment, you don’t have to book a lot of it in advance.

I chose to study at the University of Huddersfield because there’s a great course for Music Technology for which a lot of students from around the world come here to study. There are also quite a few well-known professional tutors in the University. My time at the University of Huddersfield helped me to get a better understanding of how the industry works. I have met quite a lot of talented musicians, experts on music technology, people who are willing to help with my work, and wanting to collaborate.

I would recommend Huddersfield because there are a lot of talented performers and magical friendly people to meet here in Huddersfield. Also the rent is quite cheap here in the North and it’s not too busy, not too filled with traffic and mass media kind of atmosphere, as the big cities can sometimes seem.”

Inspiring, Innovative, International. Professor Nicholas Temple Professor of Architecture Nicholas joined the University of Huddersfield as Professor of Architecture in April 2012, having previously taught at the University of Lincoln as both Professor of Architecture and Head of the School of Architecture. Born in Australia, Temple studied architecture at Cambridge University and has a PhD on the subject of architecture and urbanism in early 16th Century Rome. He was a Rome Scholar in Architecture (1986-88) at the British School at Rome, and recently was awarded a Paul Mellon Rome Fellow (2012).

This examination transgresses the conventional boundaries between architecture, painting, inscription, cartography and sculpture, incorporating broader inter-disciplinary research across historical periods and regions.

Temple’s recent research and scholarship focuses on the historical inter-relationships between architecture, topography, ceremony and geography, examining territorial, symbolic and ideological exchanges between interiors, buildings, cities and regions.

At the same time Temple has engaged in detailed research on the study of architecture as a humanistic discipline, examining in particular connections between architecture, language and pictorial representation. This research has highlighted how the humanistic tradition of linguistic enquiry, during the early modern period, served as a critical backdrop to the emergence of modern forms of Encyclopedism and the increasing interest in the possibility of both a universal linguistic system and an architectural language.

Much of the research has been focused on the city of Rome, as-evidenced in his numerous publications and in Temple’s recent award as the Paul Mellon Rome Fellow at the British School at Rome (2012).

Professor Monty Adkins Professor of Experimental Electronic Music Monty has created installations, concert and audio-visual works, and a number of collaborations with contemporary performers. His works have been commissioned by Ina-GRM, IRCAM, BBC Radio 3, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (HCMF), SpACE-Net, ZKM (Centre for Art and Media, Karlsruhe) and Sonic Arts Network (SAN), among others. For his oeuvre he has been awarded over 15 international prizes including the Stockholm Electronic Arts Award (Sweden), Grand Prize at Musica Nova (Prague, Czech republic), and five prizes at the Bourges International Electro-Acoustic Music Competition (France).

Having read music at Pembroke College where he studied French mediaeval and Italian renaissance music, Adkins then studied electronic music with Jonty Harrison at the University of Birmingham where he performed across Europe with the Birmingham Electro-Acoustic Sound Theatre (BEAST), and Simon Waters at the University of East Anglia. He is currently Professor of Experimental Electronic Music at the University of Huddersfield. Adkins is also active as a writer and concert curator. He completed his first book in 2011 on the relationship between art and music (Shibusa – Extracting Beauty), a second on the music of Roberto Gerhard in 2013. Adkins is also Co-Artistic Director of the Electric Spring Festival. Held in Huddersfield, annually, this festival focuses on live electronic music and experimental performance. 39

Advertising and Marketing Communications BA(Hons) Semi-Finalists L’Oreal Brandstorm

"One of the most valuable skills I have developed during my Advertising and Marketing Communications course at Huddersfield is the ability of thinking both creatively and very strategically, which I believe is very important for this particular industry.

My 4 years at the University have been very diverse. I had the opportunity to undertake an Erasmus exchange programme in Paris and a 12 months placement in a great international company working as part of their e-commerce team.

My course gave me the possibility to be part of a huge international competition, L'Oreal Brandstorm, where skills such as team work, strategic thinking, creativity, planning, and innovation is being challenged and you get to have a lot of fun and meet professionals from an exciting industry. Working with my classmates was a real opportunity to put into practice what we had been taught and enjoy this experience together.

The years at the University of Huddersfield gave me a lot of confidence and opportunity to unleash my potential. Only now do i realise how much these experiences help me stand out among graduates from other universities. The relaxed and friendly attitude of my tutors, that perceived us as their friends, was crucial in the times when I needed support and motivation."

Undergraduate Course Accelerator science MSc

The International Institute for Accelerator Applications Particle accelerators are well known for their role at the frontiers of science, as in the discovery of the Higgs Boson. They also make a surprisingly important contribution to everyday life, from making better smartphones to treating cancer. The Huddersfield International Institute for Accelerator Applications (IIAA) brings together research in accelerator science and engineering, from low energy devices in its own laboratories eg. Electronic Beam Ion Source (EBIS) and Medium Energy Ion Scattering (MEIS), to the highest energy machines at sites around the world, including the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva and the European Spallation Source in Lund. Research staff link with others across the school and the University on a wide range of projects including FFAGS (Fixed-Field Alternating Gradients), proton therapy, and ADSRS (Accelerator Driven Subcritical Reactors). Researchers also work at national and international centres (CERN, TRIUMF, ESS, ILL, ESRF, ISIS) and play a strong role in The Thorium Energy Association (ThorEA) organisation to encourage the construction of Thoriumfuelled ADSRS. For more information visit www.thorea.org

English language support

Finding a PhD supervisor

All international research students can benefit from English language training to ensure they can reach their full academic potential. Depending on your needs we can support you in a variety of forms including one-to-one advisory sessions, small group workshops and short courses.

The supervision of your research will be conducted by your main supervisor, who will be a suitably experienced member of our academic staff, assisted by a team. Supervisors are there to support and offer you guidance throughout your PhD, helping you to write your best possible thesis.

Research degrees

To give you the best chance of acceptance onto your chosen research degree, it is strongly recommended that you make contact with a potential supervisor to discuss with them how your research interests may be compatible with their own interests and experience. You can use our keyword search to get you started: www.hud.ac/ourstaff

We have a number of research degrees that you can apply for including: Master’s level research (1 year Full time, 2 years part time) • Master’s by Research • Master of Enterprise. Doctorate level research (3 years full time, 6 years part time) • Doctor of Philosophy • Doctor of Enterprise • Doctor of Applied Linguistics*

It is important to feel comfortable with your supervisor; after all they will be your mentor for at least 3 years. If distance permits, you can arrange a meeting with them or a telephone conversation where you can discuss your proposed PhD and their research interests. We would recommend that you read more about the research expertise of the University on our website. This will give you an overview of the areas in which it is possible for you to undertake a research degree.

• Doctor of Education*. *Please note that these research degrees are professional doctorates and incorporate elements of taught modules.

For further information on how to apply please visit: www.hud.ac.uk/research
