Dear Ed Expo Attendee: Welcome to Dallas and NSSEA’s Ed Expo 2009, the Back to School Bonanza! I want to encourage you to use your time at the tradeshow to take advantage of the collective knowledge of our members. Meet and talk to as many people as you can. Be sure to ask lots of questions and listen carefully to the answers. We have many challenges facing the industry as we try to maximize sales in a difficult economy. Make the most of your time here.
Welcome from the NSSEA Chair
The pages of this program will help you map out your strategy for working the show. The first tabbed section includes a schedule of events and all the information you need to know to make your time at the show run smoothly. The second tabbed section has information about all the events and activities happening at Ed Expo, including the “Saddle Up” Party at Eddie Deen’s Ranch, leadership meetings and special show features. The third tab includes full listings of exhibitors, show specials and a product index. Plan your show, and work your plan! In addition to the Show Program, I encourage you to take a few minutes to visit the NSSEA Website (www.NSSEA.org) and try out the new online tradeshow planner. My Ed Expo Planner is a new online tool being offered by NSSEA to help maximize your time and create a unique show planner for use onsite in Dallas. Once your planner is complete and you have added all the exhibitors you want to see, you can print out a floor plan that will easily direct you to the booths of interest to you and an agenda to manage your time most effectively. It has been my pleasure to serve as the Chair of the Board during this exciting time for NSSEA and the school market. With so much to do and see, be sure to use your time wisely at Ed Expo to source new products and forge business partnerships that will result in increased sales, market share and profits. Sincerely,
Jamey Firnberg School Aids, Inc. 2008-09 Board of Directors Chair

■ Service Providers that include consultants, mail list brokers, trade publishers, printers, catalog producers, inventory/POS systems, OEM, retail fixture manufacturers, and online service providers. ■ Independent Manufacturers Representatives who represent two or more suppliers in selling products to dealers, with orders being written in the name of the supplier.
NSSEA trade events provide you with the ideal venue to share in networking events, leadership meetings, and professional development workshops. ■ Ed Expo is the largest back-to-school ordering show and is open to the entire school supply market. This show is specifically geared toward the educational products retailer and distributor. ■ The School Equipment Show is tailored to the unique needs of the furniture and equipment segment of the school market, and is open to all equipment suppliers, distributors, and specifiers, including architects, facility planners, and school purchasing officials. ■ The Winter Conference Cruise is designed to provide plenty of time for networking, recharging, and team-building in a beautiful relaxing setting. ■ Workshops/Seminars — NSSEA provides highquality workshops at all its events, including the School Equipment Show, Ed Expo, and the Annual Winter Conference Cruise. Building A Marketing Plan: The Key To Success In The Modern Business Environment Room C141 Dave Fellman Dave Fellman and Associates Very few business people would argue the wisdom of establishing a comprehensive, full-year marketing plan, yet very few seem to actually do it. Why? In many cases, it is simply a matter of not knowing how. This session will consider some of the common marketing techniques in use today, and demonstrate how to put a full year’s worth of marketing activities together into a comprehensive, written marketing plan. You will learn about: • The difference between direct selling activities and support/ influence activities. • The specific difference between advertising and sales promotion. • The pluses and minuses of direct mail, telemarketing, and other common strategies. • Affinity marketing and other marketing trends from the “outside world.” • The role of a mission statement in your marketing plan. • The three key questions that provide the foundation of your marketing plan. • Transforming your sales goals into “action plans.” • The secret to accurate sales forecasting. • Building measurability into your marketing plan. • Using your marketing plan as an ongoing marketing and management tool. Dave Fellman is president of David Fellman & Associates, a sales & marketing consulting firm based in Cary, NC. He’s a popular speaker who has delivered seminars and keynotes at industry events across the United States, Canada, England, Ireland and Australia. I Have a Website – Now What?
The Next Five Years & Beyond in Retailing
Room C142 Carol Ann Waugh President, Xcellent Marketing
Room C140 Greg M. Gorman, Principal, GMG Design, Inc.
One of the keys to increasing your revenue from your Website is to put yourself into the shoes of your customer and evaluate how easy it is to find information and place an order. Attend this session to learn the essential ingredients to developing a successful Internet selling strategy. Keeping your eye on the basics of Website design, relationship building, and customer satisfaction is the foundation for future success.
Don’t keep yourself in the dark, but make solid decisions to move forward identifying the newest in-store design trends applicable to retailers today and into the future. Retailers must always change their retail environment to stay fresh and trendy for the customer. Customers have been educated to expect change. Be a leader and not a follower. Aviate, Navigate, Communicate Room C141 Dave Fellman Dave Fellman and Associates Several years ago, while piloting his own single-engine airplane, Dave Fellman was confronted with an in-flight engine failure. He immediately implemented the aviator’s emergency mantra...Aviate, Navigate,Communicate: maintain control of the airplane, pick an emergency landing site and fly toward it, and communicate with any internal and/or external resources who might be able to help. The story of his glide toward safety – and of the actions he took when a construction vehicle pulled out from nowhere onto his intended touchdown site – will hold you riveted to your seat. The story of how he recovered from his injuries will teach you something about the value of hard work. But that’s not the only “moral” of this story. The real lesson is in the way Dave ties Aviate, Navigate, Communicate to the challenges of modern business and modern life. This is an important message, delivered by a speaker who has truly “been there!”

Developing a Competitive Profile Room C140 Greg Cessna, School Specialty, Inc. When it comes time to gathering information about your competition, it pays to gather as much data as you can get your hands on. A great way to keep information about your competition organized is to create a profile on each of them. Doing so will not only help you understand them but it will also help you learn how to outperform them. How you see your competition should define the strategies you employ in competing with them. Whether large or small, a direct competitor or operating in an adjacent market, competition is real and usually shows up in the gaps where customers want what you don’t have. A competitive profile includes all that you know about them, their perceived weaknesses and strengths, and why they are successful. Learning how to profile your competition is the key to developing strategy that allows you to effectively compete with them. Greg Cessna is the President of School Specialty’s $750 million Educational Resources business. Greg was responsible for developing and implementing a strategy that would align School Specialty’s business units into a single customer facing business with the objective of improving the customer experience. Prior to joining School Specialty in 2005, Greg was the President of Polyvision Corporation’s Visual Communication Business, where he developed strategy and competitive analysis that led to the strategic roll up of more than seven regional competitors and established PolyVision as the largest visual communication business in the US and Europe before selling the company to Steelcase.
