Welcome to the Southern Building Show On behalf of the membership of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association and the Home Builders Association of Georgia, welcome to the 2010 Southern Building Show and Conference! We applaud the sound business decision that brought you to the 17th Annual Southern Building Show. As builders, we clearly understand the building business and the challenges presented by the current economic environment. We believe that this year’s show will provide you with the tools and resources you need to navigate this economic cycle and position your business for success as our industry rebounds. The Southern Building Show’s education line-up is guaranteed to deliver the tools you need to succeed and the motivation to inspire you to action. The nation’s leading industry experts will conduct more than 30 dynamic seminars designed to provide you with practical, take-home ideas and simple implementation techniques. The show’s educational programming covers five subject tracks central to the fundamental issues and trends that directly impact your business. The exhibit hall will be the gathering place during the 2010 Southern Building Show! The exhibit hall is the place to learn about the latest trends in building products, services and technology that can give your company a winning edge in this highly competitive market. The Midtown Green will be the centerpiece of the exhibit hall where you can explore the products and services that were used in the 2010 Midtown Green Showcase Home. In addition to the traditional exhibits, all seminars, meetings, activities, meet the experts, live demonstrations, the vendor showcase and even the Builder Bookstore will all be located on the trade show floor. Networking opportunities are another feature of the Southern Building Show. The widely popular Big Bash Reception will be held on the show floor on Thursday afternoon. Enjoy great food and fun while networking with old friends and making new acquaintances. This reception is free to all exhibitors and attendees. New for this year’s show is the Southern Building Show’s Builder Exchange, which is a formalized expansion of the popular Builder Appointment Program that was introduced last year. The Builder Exchange will be a permanent feature of the show and we believe is the first of its kind to be incorporated into a trade show in our industry. The Builder Exchange, as well as many of the new enhancements you will enjoy at this year’s show, are a direct result of your feedback and our commitment to continue to provide our exhibitors and attendees with the valuable tools that you need to succeed during this recovery period and beyond. From the dozens of educational seminars and social events to the variety of products showcased in the exhibit hall and the opportunity to network with thousands of industry professionals from around the Southeast, you are bound to walk away with important information to help sustain your business and increase your productivity and profits. Using value engineering disciplines and laying out a comprehensive linear product line, builders will begin to systemize their approach to homebuilding based on facts and not guess work. Systemizing your approach to product design and product line creation will add dollars to your bottom line. Patrick Miller is Senior Product Designer for SMA Consulting, a financial and operational consulting firm that focuses on bringing advanced systems and plan designs to smaller and mid-size homebuilders. Patrick’s design philosophy focuses on simple design and easy-tobuild homes that deliver more home for less price to his customers. Adapting Your Building Company to the Remodeling Market — Classroom 1 Track: Construction/Building Science
Christine Fortenberry It is a natural progression for home builders to consider expanding or redefining their home building companies to participate in the world of remodeling. But, the selling, managing of the project and customer and the marketing are very different. There are no real estate agents involved to assist with communication, pacifying, marketing, advertising, customer definition and a marketing plan. The task list for this transition is long and the prioritizing of this task list to enter the world of remodeling will significantly influence the transition and your success or failure. Christine Fortenberry, a graduate of Georgia Tech, has earned CAPS and CGB designations and is a NAHB course instructor. Fortenberry serves with the CAPS Board of Governors, National 50+ Council and Professional Women in Business Council, and is on the board of directors for the NAHB, Remodeler’s Council and Atlanta HBA. She is a guest lecturer for the Georgia Tech School of Architecture and other organizations on the subjects of universal design and aging-in-place.

The drive to take advantage of all the opportunities placed in front of us has done little to build resilience and renewal in the foundations of our companies. And as the market slows down, the temptation is to put your nose even closer to the grindstone. But as leaders “dodo-do,” they risk failing to recognize an opportunity when it comes their way. Instead of “doing” it all, leaders should oversee it all by replacing themselves. This program is designed to wake-up leaders to the realization that the key to the health and growth of their organization is to replace themselves and become true leaders. Clay S. Nelson is a former “nail belt wearing” contractor who successfully ran his own company for over 14 years. Nelson’s speeches address specific problems, not textbook generalities. For more than two decades, Nelson has been providing leaders, and their teams, with business and professional coaching, mediation, facilitation, planning, system analyses and seminar leadership. He founded Clay Nelson Life Balance™, a division of Consulting Services Network LLC.

Raising the Ranch – Using Design to Get the Most from a Ranch Remodel — Classroom 3 Track: Design & Architecture

Two of these case studies were included in the Not So Big House book series by Sarah Susanka. Emphasis will be given to using practical and aesthetic architectural strategies to “raise” the design quality of any house. Steve Robinson formed Axios Architecture in 2006 to focus primarily on single family residential projects. He graduated from Auburn University’s Architecture program and was awarded the Humphries Scholarship as the Outstanding Graduating Senior. His design work has been featured in exhibitions, magazines and books, including Inside the Not So Big House and Remodeling Not So Big.
