Lake Como to host IGTM 2014 The 2014 International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) will be hosted in Italy’s Lake Como region, one of Europe’s most beautiful and popular travel destinations. The event will take place from October 27-30, 2014, at the Villa Erba Exhibition and Conference Centre, sited on the banks of Lake Como. The unique Exhibition and Conference Centre at Villa Erba, built in 1988 by famous architect Mario Bellini, overlooks 24 acres of magnificent trees and parkland and at its centre, features a domed pavilion from which depart three distinct wings: Lario, Cernobbio and Regina. SMS survey reveals Spanish golf tourism worth €340 million Data released by Sports Marketing Surveys Inc (SMS) at IGTM today shows that golf tourism is now a €340 million industry in Spain. The SMS survey, called ‘European Spotlight on Golf Tourism to Spain’, was commissioned by IGTM organisers, Reed Travel Exhibitions. It shows golf tourism across Europe is worth some €1.55 billion annually and that Spain is the number one travel destination for visitors from France, Germany, Scandinavia and the UK. A Budding new attraction at Carnoustie

Unprecedented plan to push Porto A new scheme has been launched to promote golf in the Porto region of Portugal to international visitors. The Porto Golf Group brings together golf clubs, as well as upmarket hotels and resorts, and has the backing of the Porto & Northern Portugal Tourism Board.
Carnoustie Golf Links Management Committee has announced that its revamped Buddon Links will be fully open for play in time for the start of the 2014 season. Two brand new holes have been constructed, one removed and another two amalgamated resulting in the overall length of the course increasing by just under 600 yards for men and a little less than 500 yards for ladies. The new Buddon Links course now measures 5,921 yards from the men’s tees and plays to a par of 68 rather than the previous 65.
The ladies par has gone up from 64 to 67 with the total yardage increasing to 5,035 yards. The revamp of the course has been undertaken by Mackenzie & Ebert, who have recently worked on five Open Championship courses. The firm’s Martin Ebert said: “We are honoured to have been asked to advise at Carnoustie. The region boasts five 18-hole courses, including the Oporto Golf Club – established in 1890 and one of the oldest in continental Europe; and Vidago Palace – originally laid out in 1936, but recently redesigned to USGA specifications. “An initiative like this has never been properly established in this region before,” said Helena Gonçalves, executive director of the Porto & Northern Portugal Tourism Board, adding “The Tourism Board will do its upmost to help promote the work of the group through marketing initiatives, media campaigns and familiarisation trips. After all, our region is known as the ‘essence’ of Portugal, so it is essential we promote golf in Porto and the North of Portugal in a similar way.” Alexandre Barroso, director of golf at Vidago Palace Hotel and spokesperson for the Porto Golf Group, added: “The golf courses are designed to be played with many enjoying incredible views free from green-side property developments. IGTM admires the raw beauty of Argentina Latin American destinations have come out in force at this year’s IGTM, and none more so than Argentina, which is promoting its wealth of golf courses (around 250 and counting), and the excellent conditions for European golfers to play there during the winter months. Among the many golf courses highlighted by at the show by Belen Rodriguez, coordinator of Polo & Golf at the Argentina National Institute of Tourism Promotion, were a number in the north of the country, described as an oasis of green surrounded by mountains. Here, courses such as Palpalá Golf Tenis Club and La Esperanza Golf Club offer very different although equally challenging and fascinating styles, with Palpala in the valleys, just nine miles from the capital city San Salvador de Jujuy, and the tricky La Esperanza course located 40 miles from san Salvador. In the region of Mendoza, Tupungato Winelands is situated just 49 miles from the capital city of the same name. On this challenging course, the difficulty of navigating sloping holes is compensated for by the very generous fairways. At this moment in time, the golf product is taking on a dimension it has never had before, particularly in spring and autumn. The opportunities are huge, and the potential of our seven courses on the Costa Daurada is being fully leveraged. A few years ago, having less of an offer was indeed a handicap, but this shortcoming has been taken care of and now we know that we can become a major golf destination in the Mediterranean area. Do you have a specific strategy for promoting golf tourism in Costa Daurada, as distinct from general tourism? Yes, it has to be that way, because it is a product with specific aspects in terms of markets and segments. We are also focusing on the Nordic countries and the UK and Germany. Our annual promotion plan contains a dedicated programme for the golf product, we also support the Costa Daurada Golf Association in order to provide a more suitable and optimised coordination of all actions. Are there more courses planned in the area? If so, can you give us a sneak preview? No, at the moment there are no plans for new courses in the short term. The latest ones were the 3 Lumine Golf courses, which have been extremely useful in enabling us to present a wider offer to the market. What can you do to encourage tour operators to direct clients towards the province? I think that novelty is a factor that should be taken into account. There are already many well-known destinations in Europe, and we can be presented as a new area with excellent-quality courses that could be very attractive to golfers who have already travelled a great deal and seek new proposals. We offer courses where you can play without the pressure of schedules. We have a fantastic climate all year round, a very interesting complementary offer for golfers, a great wine offer - the largest in Catalonia and Spain in terms of wine-producing areas - and we are near Barcelona... So as you can see, there are many good reasons to visit the Costa Daurada. I think that in the future we will be a golf destination to be reckoned with in the Mediterranean. Where do the majority of your visitors come from? The structure of our demand is quite stable: 45% are from the domestic market, i.e. clients from places here in Catalonia and Spain overall. The international market therefore accounts for 55% ... This figure is led by 06 IGTM DAILY THURSDAY
the Russians, with 23%, the French are second, with 22%, the UK is third, with 19%, while the Dutch are not far behind, with 12%. Are you finding things changing in terms of visitor behaviour - i.e. length of stay, number of rounds of golf, more families? Yes, things are changing. In the first half of 2013, the number of green fees doubled versus the same period in 2012. We believe that the IGTM has had an effect in this regard, and we are fairly satisfied. The Costa Daurada is one of the main family tourism destinations in the Mediterranean, and this permits specialisation of its offer and the combination of golf stays and family holidays. Do you have a sense that things are finally recovering? In your province, in Catalonia and in Spain? The tourism sector has behaved well over the last few years. We have continued to grow, which is a good sign that our industry is strong and doing well. Remember that the Costa Daurada generates some 19.5 million overnight stays and is visited by 5.2 million tourists a year. It is true that the country has been immersed in a major crisis since 2007, but it seems that the end of the crisis is nigh and that the tendency is changing. In the third quarter of the year, the economy grew by 0.1%, and if we take other indicators into account this would seem to point to a change of cycle. Let us hope that this is the case.

Golfing gladiators to slug it out in Tunisia At this year’s IGTM, the Tunisian Tourist Board announced its intention to create golf holes within the historic amphitheatre at El Djem. Far from being an act of vandalism, the project is designed to promote golf in Tunisia, while highlighting the country’s many historic attractions. Moncef Battikh, Head of Promotions at the Tunisian Tourist Board, unveiled the new initiative, saying: “In April 2014, we are planning a very unusual event and it will take place in the Colosseum of El Djem, where the Gladiator movie was partly shot.” During the short promotion, a number of high-profile professionals will enter the amphitheatre to test their skills against the miniature course. “Golf is a priority for is in Tunisia now,” said Mr Battikh, “and we have a strategy to build two golf courses each year. “International professionals have told us that you can only be talked about as a golfing destination when you have 30 courses, so we can reach that in three years.” In a separate announcement, it was revealed that Tunisia welcomed 400,000 British tourists into the country this year – the largest number since the tourist board’s London office first opened in 1969.

ClubstoHire.com has made the most of its time at IGTM, signing deals to operate on the Costa Daurada and in Cape Town, South Africa.
The Costa Brava region in northeast Spain has proven even more popular with golf tourists in 2013 than it did in 2012, a study has shown.
The Dublin-based firm, which has next year’s Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley as its ambassador, already operates across 16 locations in Europe – but the new agreement with Neil’s Transport Services represents its first foray into Africa.
The Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board has analysed the total number of rounds played by international travellers in the region over the past two years and discovered that while its domestic market still dominates the landscape (50 per cent) it is increasingly popular with foreign golfers.
Judge said: “This a great opportunity for us to expand beyond Europe and South Africa is an incredible destination for golfers.” On the new deal in Spain, he said: “We’re delighted to be on the Costa Daurada. The number of golfers visiting resorts such as PortAventura is growing fast and for us this represents a continuation of the excellent growth we’ve enjoyed over the past few years.” Since its formation in the summer of 2010, the company has established a customer base of 90,000 who can make substantial saving by hiring equipment at their destination rather than transporting their own clubs. Prices for a set of clubs start from €35 per week. ClubstoHire.com stocks some 3,000 sets of equipment from brands from budget gear to the latest kit, from brands such as TaylorMade and Callaway, giving golfers the opportunity to play with familiar clubs or to try out new items.
Visitors from neighbouring nation, France, have shown the most significant increment with an increase of 8.5 per cent in French visitors making use of the region’s diverse golf facilities. Among its varied golf destinations, Costa Brava boasts three former Spanish Open venues including PGA Catalunya Resort, near Girona. Ramón Ramos, Director at Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board, said: “The area is increasingly being recognised as a reputable golf destination, and especially since we were announced the IAGTO Emerging Golf Destination of the Year at IGTM 2000.”

Castelfalfi In 2007, TUI AG made a bold decision – even for Europe’s leading travel group – to purchase an 800-year-old castle-estate in the heart of Tuscany. At the time, the real estate comprised a village, or Borgo, an 11th century citadel and castle, a small church, and some abandoned farmhouses – along with surrounding land incorporating vineyards and olive groves. That was the starting point of a €250million investment intended to bring the Medieval village and its environs back to life as a luxury resort, through a combination of painstaking restoration and sympathetic development. This was never going to be a get-rich-quick project; after all, the development – now officially named Toscana Resort Castelfalfi – is not due to be completed until 2018, more than a decade after the initial purchase of the estate. At that point it will include three hotels, residential and resort real estate, restaurants featuring gourmet and Tuscan fare, retail outlets, meetings facilities, wine and olive production and, of course, some great golf. From the earliest days of the project, golf was planned to be at the heart of the Castelfalfi development, and the course that was already in situ was renovated in 2010. Now, golf at the resort includes the rejuvenated 18-hole Mountain Course – regarded as one of the most beautiful and challenging, yet eminently playable for all skill levels, in Italy. Add to that a nine-hole Lake Course, which will be extended to 18 holes in the future, and the resort is set to attract golfers from across Europe and beyond. Castelfalfi currently operates one restaurant, renowned for its authentic 14 IGTM DAILY THURSDAY
Tuscan cuisine and locally-sourced produce. A second fine-dining establishment is due to open in the spring, within the walls of the castle. This summer, the first phase of real estate development was completed, including 41 luxury apartments, housed within 300-year-old buildings that line the main thoroughfare of the Borgo. Also available are 18 farmhouses, which will be custom-renovated to buyers’ specifications, with contemporary, classic, modern or eclectic interiors. For golf lovers, there are seven villas currently under construction, which will run along the edges of both the Mountain and Lake courses. Owners of these sought-after properties will be able to place them into a rental pool for resort visitors. The first hotel at Castelfalfi opened in March of this year; a former cigar tobacco factory, the historic building now operates as a 31-room boutique hotel. The resort will add a second four-star hotel and spa in 2016, with a third planned at the end of the resort’s development stage, in 2018.
