Professor CHEUNG Yan Leung Stephen Honorary Chairman, Learning and Teaching @HKIEd Festival 2015 Organizing Committee President, The Hong Kong Institute of Education
It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to our Learning and Teaching Festival @HKIEd 2015. With the theme “Emerging Practices: Learning and Teaching in Higher Education”, the Festival is organized by the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC), in conjunction with Faculties, Departments and Academic Support Units of the Institute. As it is in its third year of operation, I would also like to congratulate the Organizing Committee for launching this highly meaningful event annually. The Festival 2015 provides a unique opportunity for our colleagues to share their emerging learning and teaching practices, which are derived from both classroom experience and academic research in a university environment. Apart from keeping the participants posted of the latest philosophies, technologies and pedagogies, it will also facilitate mutual support among members of the Institute community. At this sharing platform for learning and teaching excellence, we are very pleased to have the recipients of the UGC Teaching Award 2014, Mr. LIN Chun Han John of the University of Hong Kong and Dr. LIU Suk Ching Elaine of the City University of Hong Kong to join us as the keynote speakers of the Conference; and Prof. KWONG Yim Tze Charles of the Lingnan University to be the guest speaker of the Professional Development Seminar. It is our honour to have them sharing their insights into good teaching practices and the engagement of student learning. I am sure that our colleagues are looking forward to learning their success of delivering tangible commercial projects and knowledge of research studies out of their own pedagogical practices. I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Festival reviewers from sister universities. They are: Dr. Eva Y. W. WONG of the Hong Kong Baptist University and Dr. HO Suk Ping Angela of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. We look forward to receiving their precious comments on further enhancing the Learning and Teaching Festival in the future years. To those who are less familiar with the Hong Kong Institute of Education, I would like to share with you that the Institute has in recent years been undergoing a rapid transformation to become a leading university in the Asia Pacific region. With the emphasis on applied research and research excellence, the Institute also focuses on and greatly treasures “Scholarship of Learning and Teaching”, for the purpose of promoting good teaching practices and enhancing student learning. The core mission of the Institute is to nurture students to become caring and competent professionals through learning and teaching initiatives and activities. We are offering programmes in Education and related disciplines of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral levels. We hope that our students will transform from what they were upon admission, to better persons, and will be well equipped to become professionals who possess the right qualities to nurture and inspire future students and the people around them. I wish the Festival 2015 a great success and all the participants a most fruitful experience and enlightening sharing at the event. Thank you! P2

Professor LEE Chi Kin John Honorary Co-Chairman, Learning and Teaching @HKIEd Festival 2015 Organizing Committee Vice President (Academic), The Hong Kong Institute of Education
It is my honour to extend our appreciation to the guests, colleagues and students supporting the Learning and Teaching Festival @HKIEd 2015. Since it was first held in 2013, it has been an important annual initiative at HKIEd for the development of learning and teaching excellence through the sharing of emerging and good practices. The Festival gathers colleagues from different Faculties and Departments to exchange novel ideas and share their experiences in learning and teaching where a community of practice is formed. The Learning and Teaching Festival @HKIEd 2015 has been coordinated by the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC). My grateful thanks go to the Organizing Committee, chaired by Prof. KONG Siu Cheung, for organizing the Festival for promoting and sharing the successful learning and teaching evidence on “Emerging Practices: Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and engaging colleagues and students to showcase their achievements at HKIEd. A series of learning and teaching activities will be carried out in February and March. I encourage colleagues to participate in the Open Class Observation and Invited Talk/Seminar, which will further strengthen a culture of professional sharing amongst our colleagues in their classrooms as well as with the external scholars in their talks and seminars. Moreover, I would like to invite all of you to spare some time to tour zones D1 and D2-LP during the Festival, as Faculties, Departments and Academic Support Units have shared their learning and teaching initiatives through the large scale Poster Board Exhibition. It will be an excellent opportunity for different units to display what they have accomplished this year and will provide an overview of the learning and teaching activities taking place across the Institute. Besides, Teaching Awardees from Faculties also share their learning and teaching experiences and vibrant learning activities in their classes with us through the Video Showcase on the TVs at D1 and D2-LP, B2 and D2-G/F, and the Canteen. Last but not least, the Festival Conference held on 20 March will provide a good summary of the entire Learning and Teaching Festival. We are proud to announce that the 2014 UGC Teaching Awardees from sister universities will deliver speeches on engaging students' experiential learning and good teaching practices, and our colleagues and students are also encouraged to share their pursuit of excellence in learning and teaching in the parallel sessions. I believe that February and March will be fabulous months for all of our colleagues and students. I wish the Learning and Teaching @HKIEd Festival 2015 a great success and you all fruitful exchanges at the Festival.

Ms. WONG Hing Yi Orieta Student, Doctor of Education
Developing from a language teacher to an emerging researcher – my pathway in HKIEd Having been a language teacher in local secondary school for quite some time, I am currently an EdD student major in Educational and Developmental Psychology, and at the same time, working part-time in the Graduate School as a Research Assistant. The chance of affiliation to different departments or research centres is a conscious effort of the Institute to develop the research ability of postgraduate students; and I am grateful for the chance of being shaped and formed and cultivated as a researcher-to-be under this conscious policy. Indeed, the Institute has a clear outlook of developing into both a teaching and research centre for education in East Asia. For this, bounty resources have been investigated on the training of research skills and statistical analysis. My classmates and I will always remember how we stumbled through the first statistical shock to the nightmare of presentation of thesis proposal using well-structured statistical modelling, and hopefully, one day we’ll be able to deliver a well-grounded thesis with evidence-based data that support hard core theoretical arguments. So thanks once again, HKIEd.

Ms. Lorraine DE BEAUFORT Student, Doctor of Philosophy Hong Kong and HKIEd: studying the intersection of the local and the global in additional language learning After twenty years in the classroom trying different approaches to the teaching of French and English, and studying online and by distance, I felt I had reached a turning point. I became aware that in a globalized world, international exposure and new media were affecting students’ foreign language learning practices, use of language and perspectives on language learning. The main questions were: what was the language lesson going to become, with all these influences creeping into the classroom? In tertiary education, do these changes signal the ‘de-centering’ of the traditional university, as claimed by Francis (2010)? What can the study of additional languages such as French tell us about these changes, and how do they relate to learner identities and learning practices? I was fortunate to be chosen by HKIEd for my PhD project, which is intended to provide some answers to these and other questions. Hong Kong is the perfect place to examine the changes brought about by globalization, and HKIEd, with its expertise in education, is the perfect institution in which to study their effects on language learning. I hope that the study will contribute to an improved understanding of language learning in the age of globalization and new technologies, and that it will be of use for learners, teachers and policymakers.

Presentation Crossing the EMI Threshold: Helping Students to Study Effectively in the English Medium 3 Mar 2015 // 14:00 – 16:00 // D4-G/F-05A
Professor LAI Fung Kuen Eva Retired Professor, United International College of Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University
Abstract Upon the launch of the new language policy in the HKIEd, more and more courses previously taught in the Chinese medium are now offered in the English medium. However, it is noticeable that some teachers might not be ready for changing the medium of instruction and some students might still be afraid of learning content subjects through English. As they might need clearer directions for crossing this EMI threshold, Prof. Eva LAI will share her experiences about how teachers can teach more effectively and help their students study successfully in English. Biography With a Dip. TESOL from the University of Manchester, MA in Linguistics for ELT from the University of Lancaster and a PhD from the University of Hong Kong, Prof. Eva LAI had taught at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for 22 years and served as the Director of the English Language Centre at the United International College of the Beijing Normal University and the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) for some years before retirement. While teaching at CUHK, she also conducted research on language acquisition as a Visiting Scholar at Cambridge University and on the work of writing centers at five universities in USA including Harvard and Berkeley. She was also a Subject Specialist (English) of the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications.

Dr. MAN Ying Ling Assistant Professor, Department of Chinese Language Studies
Abstract Today, students have different expectations in pursuit of their studies. Whereas some students are keen on sharpening their professional knowledge, others enjoy the fun derived from the learning process; some like serious lectures while others prefer easy exchange of ideas. To cater for students’ diversified learning needs, teachers have to think carefully about curriculum design, lesson planning, class activities, and assessment strategies, etc. In this sharing session, Dr. MAN Ying Ling will share her experience with the audience on how she structures her lessons and supports her teaching through different pedagogies, learning activities and assessment strategies. As reflected in the student feedback, Dr. Man’s approach to teaching has proved to be effective in satisfying different students’ learning needs. Biography Dr. MAN Ying Ling, the Leader of Professional Development Programme (Chinese & Putonghua), has been serving the HKIEd since 1995. She teaches Traditional Chinese Culture, Reading theories and Strategies, General Education Subjects on Daoism within the BEd, BA and MEd Programmes. She supervises MEd & P16
EdD students on their theses. Dr. Man has been appointed as a member of the consultation panel of the West Kowloon Culture District Authority (2009-2015) and a member of Public Examinations Board (2014-2017). Dr. Man also serves as a member of Steering Committee on the Task Force on Language Support and the Support Scheme for ‘Putonghua as Medium of Instruction for Chinese Language Subject’ (PMIC). She is also the Chief Editor of the Chinese Language textbooks in the Secondary Schools.

Dr. CHUK Yim Ping Joanne Teaching Fellow, Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies
Abstract Catering for learner diversity remains a fascinating topic for teacher educators when teachers are increasingly asked to produce differentiated materials for different groups of learners in the local school context. Why is it challenging for teacher educators to cater for learner diversity? How do we cater for learner diversity? Dr. Joanne CHUK will give a presentation to address these questions with some sharing of her personal insights. Biography Dr. Joanne CHUK pursued her doctoral studies in learner and teacher autonomy after completing her master’s degrees at the University of Lancaster and the University of Hong Kong. Apart from having a keen interest in the development of learner and teacher autonomy, her main research interests include World Englishes, multilingualism in the classroom, first and second language acquisition, curriculum innovation and evaluation studies.

Abstract A quarter century after the publication of Ernest Boyer’s seminal book Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate, it is timely to reflect on how universities - in response to the changing contexts of global education - have changed, what priorities drive their continuing, rapid evolution and what this means to students, faculty and communities that universities have been called to serve. st
The first decade of the 21 century has exercised powerful pressures to change on North American universities. The economic downturn, decreasing government funding, increased global mobility, advances in learning technologies, growing international competition for students and faculty, and shifting societal attitudes and expectations have challenged and problematized the effectiveness of historically asserted academic structures and models, the relevance of traditional curricular and pedagogical practices and the adequacy of existing relationships between the university and the community. This unprecedented need to change - rapidly and thoughtfully - in order to respond to the new circumstances and to the expanded, re-defined societal mandates, has caused many universities to seriously reconsider their priorities, policies, programs and ways in which they define, deliver and reward academic quality. Research-intensive institutions have been particularly challenged to re-think how to continue to deliver on their knowledge generation mandate, while expanding their capacity to address the full spectrum of expectations and priorities that have now become closely tied to their economic viability. This presentation will offer a perspective on how the resulting adjustments have changed/are changing the teaching and learning landscapes for students and faculty; how they trigger possibilities to re-define academic roles and functions to ensure an ongoing capacity for effective and sustainable educational leadership; and how they open the door to mutually beneficial and impactful connections between the academia and the society in educational, research and community service endeavours. Biography Prof. Anna KINDLER is Senior Advisor to the Provost and Vice-President Academic and Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy, Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. In July 2014, she stepped down from the role of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President Academic, having served 10 years in this leadership position. Prof. Kindler received an MA in Industrial/Graphic Design from the Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw, Poland, followed by a second MA and a doctorate in Art Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She joined the University of British Columbia in 1990. Between 2001-2004, she took a leave of absence from UBC to take on the position of the Dean of the School of Creative Arts, Sciences and Technology at the HKIEd. During her two terms as Vice Provost and AVP Academic at UBC, Prof. Kindler was responsible for a large and diverse portfolio, including the oversight of offices and initiatives related to teaching and learning, Aboriginal strategy and international academic programs. She played a key role in initiating the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative, the Academic Leadership Development program, the new model of TA Training and the creation of the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology through the merger and restructuring of related units. She provided oversight of the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund and led efforts to develop UBC Student Evaluations of Teaching Policy and guidelines for Peer Review of Teaching. She introduced a new process of budgetary reviews of new programs and strengthened quality assurance processes, including reviews of academic units, through her work within UBC and externally, as a P18
representative of the research universities sector. She led the University’s effort to reinforce its commitment to teaching and learning through the introduction of the rank of Professor of Teaching. Prof. Kindler has gained international recognition for her research in artistic development, social cognition of art, museum education, multiculturalism and cross-cultural research, and has published widely in these areas. Her work in teacher education has focused on case-based learning and creativity in the classroom. She has been a member of editorial boards and review panels of major international journals and research granting agencies and served two terms as Vice President of the Canadian Society for Education through Art. She has contributed as a consultant to the British Columbia and Hong Kong governments on matters of curriculum reform and quality assurance. She is also a practicing artist exploring the medium of photography and has exhibited her work in North America, Europe and Asia. Prof. Kindler’s contributions have been recognized through numerous awards, including the Sam Black Award for Education and Development in the Visual and Creative Arts; the Lowenfeld Award for Outstanding Achievement in Art Education; the International Ziegfeld Award for outstanding and internationally recognized contribution to art education through achievement in scholarly writing and research; the NAEA Distinguished Fellow Award and the University of Illinois School of Art and Design Distinguished Alumni Award.

Presentation Strengthening EMI in HKIEd 24 Mar 2015 // 14:30 – 16:00 // D1-LP-08
Professor Bob ADAMSON Chair Professor of Curriculum Reform Head, Department of International Education and Lifelong Learning Director, Centre for Lifelong Learning Research and Development
Abstract In January 2014, the Academic Board approved a new language policy that marks a major shift in practices. Approximately 80% of undergraduate courses are to be delivered through the English as the medium of instruction (EMI), although classes may be conducted with the judicious use of innovative multilingual pedagogy. The new language policy has caused some unease among staff and students, who fear that using EMI may inhibit learning or who are unsure how to prepare for and deliver classes through EMI or through multilingual channels. In this presentation, I contextualize the greater emphasis on English as the EMI in HKIEd is part of a strategy to foster biliterate and trilingual students. I will present several strategies that are designed to help make learning in EMI classes enjoyable, accessible and successful. I also argue that we can move towards social equity through providing accessible quality learning to all students despite their diverse language backgrounds. Biography Bob ADAMSON is Chair Professor of Curriculum Reform, Head of Department of International Education and Lifelong Learning and Director of the Centre for Lifelong Learning Research and Development. His research covers language policy, curriculum studies, and comparative education and his most recent book is Trilingualism in Education in China: Models and Challenges (with Anwei Feng, 2015). His other books include China’s English; Curriculum, schooling and society in Hong Kong (with Paul Morris); Comparative Education Research Approaches and Methods (co-edited with Mark Bray and Mark Mason—a work translated into six languages); Higher Education in Post-Mao China (co-edited with Michael Agelasto); and The Reorientation of Higher Education: Challenging the East-West Dichotomy (co-edited with Jon Nixon and Feng Su). He has been a consultant to the Ministry of Education in China for more than 25 years and, in 2013, he was awarded the title of Kunlun Expert by Qinghai Province for his work on minority education.

Presentation Series of Hong Kong Higher Education Teaching Awardees’ Experience Sharing (3): Values, Research & Confusion: Whither Education? 26 Mar 2015 // 12:30 – 14:00 // D2-LP-09
Professor KWONG Yim Tze Charles Professor of Chinese and Translation, Adjunct Professor of Philosophy, Lingnan University The Recipient of the 2014 UGC Teaching Award
Abstract Materially and supra-materially, individually and socially, education is perhaps the most potent agent in transforming life. While poor countries are still struggling to raise basic literacy rates, higher education in more advanced places seems to be going down a blind alley, or suffering from “affluence disease”. If traditional education laid stress on cultivating virtuous beings and responsible citizens, naturally leaning towards a whole-person, all-round approach, modern education has emphasized training in specialized expertise in the past century. Even institutions that champion what is known as liberal (arts) education are not immune to this distortion. At the forefront and also a product of this educational model is the academic researcher-cum-professor. Consciously or unconsciously, eagerly or helplessly, this tensional creature has been drifting in the gap between qualifications and qualities, “professorship” and teaching, research and education, publication and learning, academic and intellectual activity. Aggravating these partly self-inflicted sources of tension and confusion are evaluations by management above and students below, externals pressures that often turn modern scholars into hostages. How many can still maintain a clear sense of direction and keep a sense of ideal? If they themselves are confused, what message will educators convey to students? From teacher to student, the gravest problem facing education and society is a crisis in values. This seminar will explore some of the fundamental issues education needs to address today.
Biography Prof. Charles KWONG, 2014 UGC Teaching Excellence Award Winner, Professor of Chinese and Translation, Adjunct Professor of Philosophy, Lingnan University. Prof. Charles KWONG read English at HKU and Oxford before studying Chinese Literature and Philosophy at Yale. Having taught in the US, he now holds a triple appointment as Professor of Chinese and Translation and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at Lingnan University. His research comprises books and articles in English and Chinese covering classical Chinese poetry and fiction, comparative poetics, the history of ideas and literary translation. His creative writings include 2,200 classical Chinese poems in 22 collections, and 2 collections of modern Chinese prose. His translations include rendering the Chinese texts for a book of paintings into English. He is a recipient of the prestigious UGC Teaching Excellence Award (2014) and of multiple research and writing competitive grants, including 2 RGC-GRF grants and 13 HK Arts Development Council grants. He has also won a Research Excellence Award, 2 Teaching Excellence Awards and 2 Certificates of Merit in Teaching at Lingnan University.

Presentation 2 Development of A Corpus-based Online Pronunciation Learning System for Chinese Learners of English 11 Feb 2015 // 12:30 – 13:30 // D2-LP-08
Dr. CHEN Hsueh Chu Rebecca Assistant Professor, Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies
Abstract In this talk, we will introduce the major products of our TDG project and discuss the possibilities of engaging students in corpus-based ‘data-driven learning’. A learner speech corpus was established in order to help learners, teachers and researchers inside and outside Hong Kong to (a) identify Hong Kong and Mainland learners’ recurrent segmental and suprasegmental difficulties in learning English pronunciation and (b) suggest possible remedies that may reduce or eliminate such difficulties and enhance intra- and inter-cultural communication. Apart from a learner speech corpus, an online pronunciation learning platform was developed for learners to (a) discover the possible causes of common pronunciation problems spotted in the corpus, (b) practice segmental and suprasegmental aspects of pronunciation through a variety of perception and production exercises that were designed based on the pronunciation problems collected from the corpus, and (c) learn some basic sound analysis techniques via a Praat beginners’ manual compiled by the research team. Biography Dr. CHEN Hsueh Chu Rebecca joined HKIEd in 2008 and is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies. She is serving Chair of Departmental Learning and Teaching Committee responsible for quality assurance and enhancement. Dr. Chen has been investigating a wide range of issues in inter-language phonology, experimental phonetics and computer assisted language. Recently she has completed the construction of one publicly accessible corpus-based pronunciation learning website (http://ec-concord.ied.edu.hk/phonetics_and_phonology/wordpress/), which provides a spoken corpus of the English of Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese learners (http://corpus.ied.edu.hk/phonetics/), a wide range of resources and exercises for pronunciation learning and teaching, and a Praat beginners' manual for acoustic phonetics research. Programme: Master of Education (Liberal Studies Specialization) Course: Learning, Teaching and Assessing Liberal Studies Topic: Critical Thinking and Inference Making in Liberal Studies
Dr. CHENG Nga Yee Irene Assistant Professor, Department of Science and Environmental Studies The Recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching 2012-2013
Abstract Liberal Studies of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum aims to broaden students’ knowledge base and enhance their social awareness through the study of a wide range of issues. To understand the pluralistic nature of the contemporary world around them, students need to learn to examine issues from a variety of perspectives, construct knowledge and develop their critical thinking skills in order to prepare them to confidently face any challenges of the future. To help students to become critical thinkers who can make independent informed decisions on issues that have relevance to their daily lives, it is essential for the teachers themselves to have a good understanding of the nature, the models and process on which critical thinking can be developed. In this lecture, participants are exposed to the process of critical thinking development through examining a real life health issue. In the process, participants do not just identify the major problems and concepts behind the case only, but they will also attempt to analyze the case by referring to the process of critical thinking as advocated in the Toulmin Argumentation Process Model. Through this experiential learning approach, participants will evaluate their own learning as on whether their thinking is more articulate, logical and clearly structured. Towards the end of the lecture, participants are asked to identify the academic, operational and technical concerns regarding the process of thinking development they have just experienced.

Programme: General Education Course: Being Chinese: Insights from Cross-cultural Psychology Topic: Values and Morals
Dr. Emma BUCHTEL Assistant Professor, Department of Psychological Studies The Recipient of the Faculty’s Excellent Teaching Award 2013-2014
Abstract In this 3-hour session I lectured on several models of moral development, starting with classic theories and going on to cultural-psychology criticisms. I then asked students to individually respond on a worksheet to a real-life cultural conflict dilemma (in which a recent immigrant to the USA was arrested for engaging in behaviour that appeared to be pedophilia but was encouraged by his culture of origin). I then randomly assigned students into groups to analyze why the conflict arose (using the moral theories), and engage in worksheet-guided critical thinking about what appropriate solutions would be if such a situation arose in Hong Kong. We ended with group summaries and an all-class discussion.

Presentation A Classroom in the Real World 20 Mar 2015 // 09:50 – 10:20 // D2-LP-05
Mr. LIN Chun Han John Associate Professor, Faculty of Architecture, The University of Hong Kong The Recipient of the 2014 UGC Teaching Award
Abstract As university teachers, we touch only a fraction of a person’s entire professional career; operating at a turning point between years of classroom study to work in the real world. It is important to keep in mind the difference between the classroom and the real world. Though ideas are incubated in the classroom, they must ultimately be tested in the complexity of the real world. Real life situations often lack ‘right’ answers; addressing these situations involves working with different professionals, and constantly negotiating competing agendas. Experiential learning finds a complement between teaching in a studio or classroom setting and HKU students and villagers work together to rebuild a bridge in Guizhou Province, China bringing the classroom into the real world. This form of learning can re-define the role between teachers and students, and develop curriculum reform, assessment standards and design studio projects which are collective and multi-disciplinary. Ultimately, the goal is to strengthen students’ ability to deal with conditions that pertain in the real world after university. Biography Mr. John LIN is an architect based in Hong Kong and currently an Associate Professor at the University of Hong Kong. He was born in Taiwan and immigrated to the US in 1983. After studying in both the Art and Engineering programs at the Cooper Union in New York City, he received a professional degree in Architecture in 2002. Together with Joshua Bolchover he is the Director of Rural Urban Framework (RUF), a non-profit research and design organization dedicated to developing sustainable prototypes for developing rural areas. Their approach combines research into the large scale processes of urbanization and integration of local construction practices with contemporary technology. (www.rufwork.org) RUF is the recipient of numerous international awards including the Ralph Erskine Award 2014, given for innovation in architecture that “benefits the less privileged in society”. RUF is also the recipient of Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard and the ICON Award Emerging Architectural Practice of the Year in 2013. The “House For All Seasons”, a rural prototype built in China is the winner of the Architectural Review’s House Award in 2012, the WA Chinese Architecture Award 2012 and the Wienerberger Brick Award 2014. A recently published book, Rural Urban Framework: Transforming the Chinese Countryside (Birkhauser, 2013), presents the research and projects of RUF in over 18 villages in China, discussing not only successful projects, but failures and speculations on the changes in rural China since 2006. Mr. John LIN has taught previously at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is the 2010 recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Award at the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong UGC (University Grants Committee) Teaching Awardee in 2014. P40

Presentation Beyond the Intellectual Craftsman: My Story and the Quest to Merge Social Science and Education 20 Mar 2015 // 14:15 – 14:45 // D2-LP-05
Dr. LIU Suk Ching Elaine Associate Professor, Department of Applied Social Sciences, City University of Hong Kong The Recipient of the 2014 UGC Teaching Award
Abstract “From Sage on the Stage to a Guide on the Side” – Alison King (1993) As educators in the 21st Century, we still tend to adhere to the 2000-year old framework of ‘passing’ on information to the youth within the designated setting of a classroom. We are socialized to believe that an educated person, i.e., one who thinks, perceives, and acts accurately and clearly in a social environment, is resultant of going through ‘education institutions’ and our jobs, as educators, are to be the ‘sage on the stage’ to deliver that education within the classroom setting. This concept of education and our formal role as educators, however, is limited. As research in the social sciences will show, mediating the link between the self and the environment can be developed beyond the classroom; home-schooling and service-learning are stellar examples of this argument. At the heart of the examples is the, often overseen, close link between social sciences and education. Educators need to learn how to break the confines of the ‘sage on the stage’ and surface with a renewed perspective of education, one which transcends the traditional boundaries of ‘institutionalized’ education to achieve the same goal. In this talk, I will delve into my personal story of how I broke through the formal role of an ‘educator’ to become a ‘social scientist to guide’ to make a difference beyond the classroom. Biography Dr. Elaine LIU is Associate Professor and Assistant Head of Department of Applied Social Sciences, City University of Hong Kong. Her primary teaching and research interests are in children, youth and family, and volunteerism. Recently, she has been advocating and promoting youth development and empowerment, youth volunteerism and youth cross-cultural learning both locally and internationally. She is now the principle researcher of the City-youth Empowerment Project in the University. She received from City University of Hong Kong the Teaching Excellence Award and the University Grants Committee Teaching Award, both in 2013-2014 recognizing her contribution to student development and learning.

Presentation Sharing the Experiences of Enhancing Pedagogies in Blended Learning: Lessons Learned Project Team Dr. SZETO Sing Ying Elson, Dr. Darren Anthony BRYANT, Dr. CHENG Yan Ni Annie and Dr. LEE Tai Hoi Theodore Abstract This parallel session focuses on our experience of enhancing pedagogies in teaching courses in blended learning environment. The objective of this session is to share the lesson learned from the implementation of our pedagogic approaches to blended learning in Semester 2 of 2013/2014. We expected to develop innovative pedagogies with the use of information and communication technology (ICT) for the selected courses in the environment. Our collaborative effort has extended the notion of innovative pedagogies across the BEd courses we taught in that semester. We explored ways of blending face-to-face interaction in digital classrooms with online activities for authentic teaching and learning beyond the campus. Extending our collaborative effort across the courses, we identify success factors and potential challenges in the blended mode of teaching and learning. This parallel session will be an opportunity to disseminate our findings and share the lessons learned in the context of our teaching. Abstract Mobile devices (including smart phones, iPad and laptops) are common nowadays. In this sharing session, I am going to share how mobile devices can be used for teaching and learning English listening and speaking. During my English lessons, I have organized several in-class activities using mobile apps to strengthen students’ listening and speaking skills. For instance, read-aloud activities can be initiated through the use of WhatsApp. To enhance students’ vocabulary skills for speaking, dictionary apps such as Merriam-Webster were also introduced to encourage students to learn vocabulary outside class time. Some more useful and smart apps for learning listening and speaking will be further introduced during the sharing. Biography Dr. Ruby YANG is a Teaching Fellow from the Unit of Associate Degree Studies. Her teaching areas in the Unit are EAP/ESP courses for sub-degree students and her current research interest is using mobile technologies to facilitate students' English Language learning.

Abstract To enhance the quality of life in the classroom, video assessment can be used as an alternative to traditional in-class presentations. In one of the courses that the presenter taught, students were asked to videotape their presentations outside of class beforehand and videos of presentations were then shown in class for assessment purpose. All students were invited to be peer assessors during the video broadcast. It was found that most students made good use of the video presentations to demonstrate their creativity and talent. It is shown from this experience that digital video technology is worth being used as an alternative to traditional student presentations.
