Learning to swim
Summer and school holidays will soon be on us. This does not mean that you and your child need to spend the time indoors avoiding the heat. What better way to spend a couple of hours out of the uncomfortable heat, cooling down, by taking a refreshing dip in a pool or in the sea.

As we live on an Island surrounded by sea, for safety and survival reasons it becomes very important that children should at least have the basic survival skills of knowing how to swim. Enrolling in a purposely designed swimming programme for youngsters is a great way to occupy and entertain children during the summer months, instead of them spending their time in front of a TV or playing video games. At the start, young children are afraid of water which is why swimming should be introduced in early ages to boost their confidence when facing water. Involving a professional swimming teacher who knows how to handle young children is also very important. Through their expertise and guidiance they will teach the necessary skills and build confidence of a child enabling them to swim and stay afloat without armbands. Learning to swim apart from providing a physical activity, is also a great way for children to make new

friends. In addition, parents can also make good use of the time, spending time in the pool too or alternatively excercising in the gym close by. A swimming programme offered by the Kunsill Malti g˙all-iSport ‘Summer on the Move’, which consists of an 8-week programme and includes a number of other sporting activities will commence on the 12th July. Applications are currently being accepted. There are three programmes available on various days for ages 4 years to 10 years, 11 years to 16 years and Adults. The swimming programme is held at the Tal-Qroqq Sports Complex (transport is available from the Cottonera Sports Complex).
