Summer and school holidays will soon be on us. This does not mean that you and your child need to spend the time indoors avoiding the heat. What better way to spend a couple of hours out of the uncomfortable heat, cooling down, by taking a refreshing dip in a pool or in the sea.

As we live on an Island surrounded by sea, for safety and survival reasons it becomes very important that children should at least have the basic survival skills of knowing how to swim. Enrolling in a purposely designed swimming programme for youngsters is a great way to occupy and entertain children during the summer months, instead of them spending their time in front of a TV or playing video games. At the start, young children are afraid of water which is why swimming should be introduced in early ages to boost their confidence when facing water. Involving a professional swimming teacher who knows how to handle young children is also very important. Through their expertise and guidiance they will teach the necessary skills and build confidence of a child enabling them to swim and stay afloat without armbands. Learning to swim apart from providing a physical activity, is also a great way for children to make new

friends. In addition, parents can also make good use of the time, spending time in the pool too or alternatively excercising in the gym close by. A swimming programme offered by the Kunsill Malti g˙all-iSport ‘Summer on the Move’, which consists of an 8-week programme and includes a number of other sporting activities will commence on the 12th July. Applications are currently being accepted. There are three programmes available on various days for ages 4 years to 10 years, 11 years to 16 years and Adults. Getting Ready for Summer some safety tips Summer is a great time for kids – long, sunny days filled with swimming, family vacations, and warm nights around the campfire. Of course, along with the good times come the inevitable sunburns and bug bites. We advise you to prevent such situations by using Sun protection and Mosquito repellents. Here are some safety guidelines that we suggest you should follow to guarantee a safe summer for you and your family. • The worst hours for going out in the sun are from 10 AM to 4 PM. It is best to avoid going out in the sun during this time frame because the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) strength is at its peak. If for some reason you have to be out in the sun at these hours use the maximum amount of protection that you can. A sunblock with an SPF rating of 50 is the ideal during these hours. Non-protected exposure during these hours would increase your family’s risk of cancer tremendously.

• When do we put on the sunblock? Rub it on half an hour before exposure to the sun. Some people only apply it after going outside. This is a mistake since it takes time for your skin to absorb the sunblock. • A common mistake that we make is forgetting certain spots when putting on the sunblock. So every part of the skin that is exposed should have sunblock. Ears, feet, behind the legs are places that we tend to forget. • Keep reapplying it every 2 hours. Especially if you go into the water. Even if your sunblock is water resistant you still need to reapply every 2 hours. • Clothing helps to block sun rays so if possible, wear a light-weight, long-sleeved shirt, sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat to help protect your skin.

• Remain in the shade as much as possible. When your kids are playing in the sand, have them remain under a large umbrella for more protection.

When your children tell you that they are afraid, tell them that you can see that they are frightened. Everyone needs to feel heard, even if what they say is childish. Ask them to describe their fears. Learning what exactly your children are afraid of may help you come up with creative solutions to calm their fears. Tips for Parents to Ease Their Child’s Fear of Darkness • For toddlers, becoming afraid of the dark actually shows that their imagination is developing in leaps and bounds. They may have access to television programming or video games that seem light-hearted during the day but frightening at night. These fears may cause them to lay in the dark feeling scared and consequently ashamed about being scared. Even adults, especially when sleeping in strange places, can feel that familiar attack of anxiety when the lights go off.

• NEVER berate or tease a toddler, child, or teenager for being afraid of the dark, and do not allow siblings to do so, either. These fears are very real and should not be diminished. • If the child is old enough, allow him to talk about his fears as a step in understanding and overcoming them. This teaches a child to open up emotionally when he has troubles or concerns. Offer him support, and tell him that nothing can hurt him. Respect the child’s thoughts. • Keep a night light on, or a special mobile lamp that allows the child to keep close to her bed.

0 to 6 MONTHS: Your baby should be placed in the crib before falling asleep. And it is not too early to establish a simple bedtime routine. Any soothing activities, such as a Cot mobile, performed consistently and in the same order each night, can make up the routine. Your baby will associate this with sleeping, and they willl help him or her wind down. You want your child to fall asleep independently, and a routine encourages babies to go back to sleep if they should wake up in the middle of the night. 6 to 12 MONTHS: Separation anxiety becomes a major issue for some babies and may cause them to start waking up again. But the rules for night-time awakenings are the same through a baby’s first birthday: Don’t pick up your baby, turn on the lights, sing, talk, play, or feed your child – unless serious worries about health or hunger. Do not let your baby get into the habit of waking up for attention in the middle of the night. Note the time of night when your toddler begins to show signs of sleepiness, and try establishing this as a regular bedtime. And you do not have to force a 2- or 3-year-old child to nap during the day unless they get cranky and overly tired. Establishing a bedtime routine helps kids relax and get ready for sleep. For a toddler, the routine may be from 15 to 30 minutes long and include calming activities such as reading a story, bathing, and listening to soft music.

Being on call 24/7 is no joke, it is very stressful and tiring. Also, a high percentage of mothers, choose to keep on working while their children are still very young. Most working mothers feel guilty to spend time on their own, since they feel that if they are not at work they should be spending time with their children. This is not the case. Time off is very important for everyone not only for stay home mothers. It is not only beneficial for the mother but for every member of the family. The following are some suggestions how you can find time for your self. The most important thing to succeed is to be willing and determined to invest in your self and your partner: Steal 5 Minutes – wherever you are: If the baby is asleep and there is another adult in the house, why not leave for a short walk on your own? Or even sit down reading a book in the court yard? Taking your mind off house work or worrying for your baby for some time, will help you to re-focus and calm down. Spend time together, on your own: It is important that you spend time with your partner, without the children. Ask the grandparents to baby sit or even book a baby sitter and go out for dinner or for a drink. Do this once every two weeks or even once a week if possible! A weekend

through regular check ups and healthy eating. Daily exercise will help as well. Sit down and eat: Enjoy your food! Don’t just gobble it in a rush or whilst you are running after your child. Food needs to be enjoyed. Try to relax for 10 minutes whilst eating. Be Assertive: Set your priorities and stick to them, you are in charge of your own calendar. Do not accept events or other commitments if they will stress your routine or your calendar. Be firm! Spend time with your girlfriends: Isn’t it just great when you sit down for a coffee with your girlfriends to chat and catch up once in a while? Try and do it more often and pencil it in your diary so that you will not have any excuses of forgetting about it! Go for a massage together, shopping, or just sit down next to the beach and talk…You’ll feel great afterwards! The above points are just some suggestions of how you can increase time for yourself. There are many other things which you can do. What you need is a little bit of personal motivation and determination. Don’t forget that you are a very important element in the family, which needs to be taken care of! If you are stressed then all the family will be. If you are happy, then we will have a happy family. When your child shows at least three signs from this list, then you are ready to consider starting potty training. 10

The right time to begin training will differ from child to child – no two are the same and, while some will be trained in a week or two, others can take a few months. What we do know is that is that it will all happen somewhere between two to four years. When and how is up to you. You know him best!

The checklist will help you assess your child’s readiness to begin. Never force your child to start until he/she is ready as it will almost always end in failure and frustration for you both. Getting Ready Before you begin, invest in a potty or a special seat that fits over the toilet, and consider buying an explanatory picture book to show your child and help them get them interested in potty training. Start a routine You can begin with sitting your child on the potty seat fully clothed at a regular time, before bath time or after a meal, so they accept it as part of a daily routine – never force your child to sit on the potty, or physically restrain them. The last thing you want to happen is for your child to become scared. Initially it is important that your child just becomes used to the potty, and becomes used to sitting on it. Remember a potty is portable, so make sure it is always in a convenient place and readily available if your child wants it. Removing the nappy After your child has accepted sitting on the potty regularly, start sitting them on the potty seat without his nappy. If you have older children, explain this is what their brother or sister do, if not what Mummy or Daddy do, and it is a very ‘grown up’ thing to do.

If they do produce something in the potty, praise them but, if not, do not push them to perform. It may also help to show the child the process between sittings and producing, if your child fills the potty, take them by the hand and empty the potty into the toilet, let your child flush the toilet and wash their hands afterwards. If you can, let your child run around without a nappy on and have the potty to hand. Encourage them to sit on the potty whenever they want to and also tell you if they feel the urge to go. Training Pants Some children really like training pants, it can make them feel as if they are wearing proper underwear like everyone else in the family and can be a very good half-way-house for both parents and the child. They also have the advantage of the child being able to take them down and pull them up themselves, so adapting to real pants. They can be very useful to parents who have to take the child out shopping or away from home and the usual routine. There’s always the possibility of an accident at the beginning. Setbacks Expect accidents! All children have them before they’re completely trained, day and at night. Don’t be disappointed. Don’t feel you or the child have failed. Don’t get angry, and don’t punish. After all, it’s only recently

that their muscles have developed sufficiently to allow them control. Mastering the process will take time. When they have an accident, calmly clean it up and suggest that next time they tell you and try using their potty instead. Night time Even when your child is consistently clean and dry all day, it may take several more months or even years to master night training, so don’t throw away the nappies just yet. At this age, their bodies are still too immature to reliably wake them up in the middle of the night just to go to the bathroom. You can help cut down on wet nights by not letting him drink too much before bedtime and telling them that if they do wake up in the middle of the night they can call you to help them get to the potty. You can also try leaving the potty near the side of the bed in case they want to use it. Congratulations – it’s done! There will be many times during the ‘potty training’ period when you think it will never happen. Keep calm! Believe it or not, when your child is ready to learn this new grown-up skill, he/she will. And if you wait until it is really the right time for your child to start, the process shouldn’t be too painful for either of you. Your child will eventually be trained, and you won’t have to think about it again – at least, not until their future brother or sister arrives! 11

Chicken & Vegetable Soup Ingredients: • 150 grams skinned chicken breast cut into cubes • 1 small carrot • 1 medium potato • 1 ½ teaspoon corn flour • 4 tablespoons of water • 160ml of SMA Progress Kids milk • 1 or 2 triangles of cheese • Olive oil • 15 grams of pasta Method 1. Boil the carrot and potato until they are tender, then mash them. 2. Place the chicken in a medium saucepan and fry with a bit of olive oil and then add 160ml of SMA Progress Kids milk, and bring to the boil. 3. Meanwhile mix 1 ½ teaspoon of corn flour with 4 tablespoons of water and add to the chicken and SMA Progress Kids milk. Stir continuously until the soup thickens up. 4. Turn down the heat and mix in the vegetables, cheese and pasta, when the pasta is ready leave to simmer for 1 minute.

The soup is now ready to serve!
