The 2014 Total Resource Campaign (TRC) will start sponsorship renewals on January 8. We thank you for your continued support of the Chamber and the TRC. The annual Total Resource Campaign is an eight-week campaign that begins in March and goes through the end of April, in which Chamber volunteers go into the business community to secure sponsorships for the upcoming year’s Chamber events and programs. “The TRC helps our member businesses better plan their budgets, support the Chamber and become involved in community-wide events,” said Campaign Coordinator Sheri Nugent. One of the biggest benefits businesses receive when participating in the TRC is an immense amount of exposure throughout the year. Not only do businesses receive recognition for their sponsorship during the TRC but also in the promotions leading up to the event they chose to sponsor, as well as being listed in the full page newspaper advertisement from the Chamber to thank the sponsors. “It’s a general benefit of friendship,” Chairman of the TRC, Brice Foste said. “I like getting to see the folks I’ve met through the TRC out in the community that I get to keep up with. It’s all about building new relationships.” As the Chamber moves closer to the start of the TRC we look forward to working with our volunteers who are passionate about growing the business community in Lubbock.

Save the Date: Learn About Public Service, Campaigns and Candidacy! January 23, 2014

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce will host a “Public Service, Candidates and Campaigns School” from 1-5 p.m., Thurs., Jan. 23 at the Texas Tech Club. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited. The program will be non-partisan in nature and provide a nuts-and-bolts overview of what Lubbock County residents need to know to run for office, what to be ready for if a friend or family member runs for office, or if they might want to participate in campaigns for issue-based ballot measures in the future. “If you haven’t made your mind up yet as to whether or not you really want to jump into the political process, or if you’d like to get involved in a future campaign related to a local or even statewide ballot measure, this is a good place to help get you started,” said Eddie McBride, Lubbock Chamber of Commerce President and CEO. Topics to be covered will range from teaching potential candidates how to tell if they are ready to run for office, to basic campaign strategies, and procedures for filing for placement on the ballot and reporting contributions. Facilitators will be experienced local professionals who have run for office or assisted on the campaign trail. Those confirmed so far are Mike Stevens with

6

Action Printing and Former Lubbock Mayor Marc McDougal. The Public Service Candidate School will not cover an exhaustive education on the issues, rather it will focus on the public service and candidacy process. The class also will give basic information such as laws dictating campaigns and reporting of contributions. The school also will cover media relations and the importance of building a solid campaign team. The program is modeled on several successful candidate schools held throughout Texas and the United States by other chambers of commerce. Such public service seminars have been identified as a best practice for chambers of commerce by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Candidate School is open to any civically-minded citizen of Lubbock County. Class size is limited, pre-registration is required, and the fee is $35 to attend (Chamber members receive a discounted fee of $25). For more information, please contact Norma Ritz Johnson at 806.761.7000 or norma.johnson@lubbockbiz.org.

LEADERSHIP CLASSES

Community business leaders have a great starting base provided by the leadership programs at the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. Programs are designed to educate participants about main industries, introduce them to key business and community leaders as well as make the classes aware of the needs of the community.

New Century Leadership Skills development and direct interaction are the foundation each class is built upon. High school students spend a day each month visiting local businesses and learning directly from professionals the ins and outs of a business and the behind-the-scenes functions of running one. Leadership Lubbock Created especially for the busy professional, each monthly class focuses on developing leadership skills to improve connections while providing participants with a thorough knowledge of our great city and the community we all live in. Thank You, Leadership Lubbock Sponsors!

Each class highlights a specific industry, whether it is health, agriculture, media, or government. Activities include tours, speaker presentations, and interactive learning to help participants fully explore the realm of each industry identified. These educational opportunities are made possible through the generosity of our sponsors and we are grateful for their support of our educational endeavors to serve our business members.

Leadership Lubbock:

City/County Services Day “Leadership is equivalent to servanthood” spoke the Honorable Judge Bill Sowder as City/County Services Day hit a high note at the very beginning. The 99th District Judge’s courtroom was full as he and Sunshine Stanek of the Lubbock Criminal District Attorney’s Office presented on the daily life of the Lubbock County Courthouse. David Miller presented on the value of “Communication and Clarity” and a hands-on experiment drove home the importance of proper communication in a team effort. The community’s city boards are in full swing and Thomas Harris and Becky Garza re-

10

layed the importance of community involvement. Jennie Hill reminded the class of the importance of advocating for foster care children in the court system through CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of the South Plains. An in-depth tour of the Lubbock County Detention Center and the Lubbock Police Department provided the final conclusion to a fun-filled and informative day of the services the city provides.

New Century Leadership: Health & Wellness Day

The soft beeping of the monitor echoed throughout the room but all eyes were riveted on the tour guide of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UMC Health System. Health & Wellness Day began bright and early on Thurs., Dec. 12, and an intense day of tours and presentations provided high school students an opportunity to learn the many facets of patientcentered healthcare in Lubbock. AeroCare facilities wowed students from the onset and the state-of-the-art aircraft and extensive life support equipment was a sight to behold. A visit through the halls of the F. Marie Hall SimLife Center gave an eye-opening view of how advanced technology has changed the face of hands-on learning. The

consequences of drunk driving were addressed in a lunchtime presentation that incorporated laughter as part of the learning process to ease the seriousness of the discussion. A tour of the Covenant Rehabilitation Department addressed the therapies available to recovering patients. The day came to an end after an intensive session of Laughter Yoga that applied the theories of voluntary laughter and the physiological and psychological benefits. The next New Century Leadership class is Media Day on Wed., Jan. 22.

The Chamber congratulates Jeff Franks on being awarded the November Ambassador of the Month. Franks has been actively involved in the Chamber’s Ambassador Program since the spring of 2011. Franks is a Sales Manager at Brink Fleet. Franks said he is passionate about his work in the auto industry. “I really enjoy helping people buy vehicles from start to finish with whatever they need,” Franks said. Franks said being an Ambassador is important to him because he enjoys getting to take part in the community. “Originally, I joined the Chamber to promote my business,” Franks said. “But I have found it to be a great outlet to promote others’ businesses as well.” For Franks, he said the most rewarding part of being an ambassador is meeting new people. He also said he appreciates the networking opportunities that come with being a Chamber Ambassador. Franks said his favorite Chamber event is the Hub City BBQ.
