Lubbock Business Network
A Message from the President/CEO Eddie McBride The September 1999 edition of Lubbock Business Network carried my first article after I started work at the Lubbock Chamber. I accidentally ran onto that newsletter after my wife Debbie asked me to clean out my closet. Coincidence, sure, but nonetheless I found the article interesting to reflect on from the last 15 years. Actually, the reflection was more on the many changes we’ve experienced. In that article, it was pointed out that “we were going to listen to our membership and provide the voice for the business community.” The intent was to work together, volunteers and staff to be out on point, be results oriented and accomplishment based in all of our programs and activities. We are doing that today with a Board led by a succession of tremendous Chairmen that share their vision and help create policy for the Chamber staff to execute. Our outstanding volunteers help plan and execute world class events and programs that help us meet our mission to strengthen, promote, and serve our member businesses. We’ve grown from almost 1,400 members to over 2,100 largely thanks to our nationally renowned Chamber Employer Health Care Plan that provided employee benefits to many small businesses that previously could not afford to support their employees with such a plan. We are grateful to our FirstCare Health Plans partners, along with Covenant Health and UMC Health System leaders that made this plan possible to our membership.
That 1999 article spoke to the need of increasing the role of the Chamber in the community and enhancing existing community betterment programs.
Our efforts over the last several years of leading the Imagine Lubbock Together community-wide strategic planning effort will reap long term dividends in our hometown and we thank the many citizens who gave us direction and those committee volunteers for their leadership, service, and sacrifice. Partnerships were a main theme, “… one in which our growth and success will be ensured by collaboration.” We merged
with the Lubbock Hispanic Chamber of Commerce that allowed us to enrich and enhance the diversity of our Board leadership and that of the many committees of the Chamber. Our relationships have matured with LEDA/Market Lubbock, Inc., Workforce Solutions of the South Plains, TTU Small Business Development Center, Small Business Administration and numerous other groups that have proven to be beneficial for our entire region. As we set out in September 1999 to be more of a leader in our community, to serve as the voice of business, we knew we couldn’t do it alone. Thanks to our members who expect us to advocate on their behalf and perform for them; thanks to the legions of awesome business leaders and volunteers who have led our growth; and most of all, thanks to undoubtedly the best staff of Chamber professionals in America who have truly made this a wonderful experience for me. We still have a lot of great work to achieve on behalf of our members and the community but we’ve succeeded in many areas as was the stated goal in the last sentence of that September 1999 article, “I look forward to collaborating with all of you to help make Lubbock’s Chamber of Commerce the premier program in America.”
2014 Harvest Luncheon The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce will host its annual event to celebrate the area harvest with a Harvest Luncheon on Wed., Oct. 1, at the Bayer Museum of Agriculture, 1121 Canyon Lake Dr. The serving line will begin at 11:45 a.m., and the program will begin promptly at noon. Board Member Spotlight: Diannah Tatum Getting to know Board Member, Diannah Tatum.
How did you get involved with the Chamber and what keeps you involved? Stephanie Massengale called me while my husband and I were on vacation in Costa Rica. She told me she had recommended me for the Chamber Board. She felt it was perfect for me and really encouraged me to agree to serve and become engaged. She was right – I have met so many wonderful people and business peers. I feel like the Chamber is good for our business as I am constantly interacting with other business owners who make the decisions on where to place their insurance. It not only gives you the opportunity to give back to your community, but also to give back to your own business.
What is your favorite event or program of the Chamber? I have really enjoyed all that I have had the opportunity to be involved in, but my favorites are the prayer breakfast, Business Expo and the Barbeque. What are some of your other community leadership roles? Independent Insurance Agents of Lubbock – Secretary/ Treasurer; Covenant Foundation Board; Covenant Children’s Task Force; Texas Tech Chancellor’s Advisory Committee; Meals on Wheels. Finish this sentence: Never again will I… just wait and see. It is so much more fun and satisfying to participate and get things done.
Young Professionals of Greater Lubbock Spotlight: Christi Chadwell working opportunities and chances to meet people. I actually decided to dive right in and get involved on the YP steering committee my first year. I wanted to be able to meet people and get involved, and YP gave me that opportunity. How long have you been a YP member? I joined in February 2012, so about 2 ½ years.
Getting to know Christi Chadwell, Young Professionals of Greater Lubbock member. Chadwell is also on the Agriculture Committee, Water-Smart Task Force Committee, and the YPGL Steering Committee. Why did you choose to be a member of Young Professionals of Greater Lubbock? When I graduated with my undergraduate degree, I was searching for new opportunities to get involved around Lubbock. I had a few friends that had been members of Young Professionals and always talked about the great net-
10
What are some of your favorite YP events to attend? I love Lunch and Learns. Even when the topics aren’t directly relevant to my interests, I still enjoy going to hear presentations and learn new things. There is always a new group of people that attend Lunch and Learns that don’t always come to other events, so you get to meet different people all the time. And of course, I really enjoy the First Tuesday Networking events. They are a good time to socialize and interact in a more relaxed atmosphere, and really get to know people. What do you feel is the most rewarding part of being a YP member? The relationships and friendships I have made because of my involvement in YP are priceless. I’m so glad I was able to join an organization that allowed me to meet people my same age, older and younger than me, people that are successful in their career, and create friendships that will last a lifetime.
Why is being a YP member important to you? I think it’s vital for young professionals to be involved in their community. YP offers that opportunity. Where do you work? I work at Texas Tech University, in the Department of Plant and Soil Science. What is your position? I am the unit coordinator for student recruitment and communications. What all does your position entail? I am in charge of all the student recruitment, programs, materials, and organizations for our academic programs. I travel to high schools, science fairs, and trade shows to promote our department and our academic programs. I also work on all of our communications and marketing efforts for the department. This is a large umbrella that includes event planning, community relations, and other miscellaneous items needed at our various research institute. How long have you been with your current company? I started in this position in February of 2012, so about 2 ½ years, and I love it!

September Business of the Month: FirstCare Health Plans Congratulations, FirstCare Health Plans, the Chamber’s September Business of the Month! “FirstCare joined the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce 12 years ago to show its support for Lubbock and the local business community,” said Regional Executive Director Chuck Walker, “and to take advantage of the programs and services afforded its membership by the Chamber.” Since joining the Chamber in 2002, FirstCare has made great efforts in supporting the Chamber and the Chamber’s mission to strengthen, promote and serve its members. The Chamber admires the dedication and effort FirstCare puts into its membership. “Being a Chamber member has increased FirstCare’s name and brand recognition throughout the community through the various programs and sponsorships in which we’ve had the opportunity to participate,” said Walker. “The business contacts made and the relationships that have been established and strengthened over the years have played a major role in FirstCare’s growth and success in Lubbock and the South Plains.” FirstCare’s involvement with the Chamber is vast. A number of FirstCare employees serve and participate in the Chamber
as board members, committee members, members of Leadership Lubbock, and as volunteers. “The most visible involvement with the
Chamber is FirstCare’s eight-year partnership with the award-winning Lubbock Chamber Employer Health Plan, through which over 600 employers and 7,000 members purchase their health benefits,” Walker stated. Walker said FirstCare considers it a privilege to have sponsored and participated in multiple Chamber events over the course of its membership; those events include the Annual Meeting, Business After Hours, Business Expo, Business Mercado, Golf Classic and Hub City BBQ Cook-Off. FirstCare enjoys its diverse participation and involvement in Chamber events. Nevertheless, the event its staff enjoys the most is the Business Expo. “The opportunity Business Expo provides for business to business networking, connecting with other event sponsors, community leaders and citizens of
our great city on a personal level is just extraordinary,” said Walker. “We have been a sponsor of Business Expo for many years, and look forward to many more in the future.” The Chamber also looks forward to its continued partnership and future endeavors with FirstCare. “We consider it a privilege to be a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and we support the values, mission and goals of the Chamber and its stellar representation and support of the Lubbock business community,” Walker said. The Chamber is proud to congratulate FirstCare Health Plans on its September Business of the Month achievement. FirstCare, along with all of the other businesses of the month for 2014, will be considered for the Chamber’s Business of the Year award, in December 2014.
