2013 Fiestas Patrias Luncheon Friday, September 13, 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m. • Civic Center Banquet Hall • 1501 Mac Davis Lane

In Texas and throughout the Southwest, two Mexican national holidays (fiestas patrias) are celebrated – Cinco de Mayo and Diez y Seis de Septiembre (September 16). Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called for the end of Spanish rule in Mexico in the grito de Dolores (cry of Dolores) on September 16, 1810, at the village of Dolores, near Guanajuato. On September 16, 1825, the Republic of Mexico officially declared Diez y Seis de Septiembre its national Independence Day. At the time of the Texas Revolution of 1836, which ended Mexican Texas, Hispanic peoples possessed a unique cultural heritage enriched by a combination of Spanish and Indian customs. This biculturation enabled them to adapt and join the mainstream culture while retaining their valued ethnic traditions in group relationships and family structures. Mexican Americans began celebrating fiestas patrias to reinforce their cultural links with each other and with Mexico. The first fiestas patrias were held in Texas in the early 1820s. (Texas State Historical Association Handbook of Texas Online)

June Ambassador of the Month: Myndee Pool By Keely Hamman

Congratulations to Myndee Pool, marketing and public relations for Carpet Tech, for earning June’s Ambassador of the Month award! Pool, who has been active in the Lubbock Community as well as the Lubbock Chamber, has been a Chamber ambassador for the past three years. “I became an ambassador because Carpet Tech believes whole heartedly in serving the community that helps us continue to grow. We think it is important to support our fellow business owners in order to continue to support our economy and the growth and development of our great city,” Pool said. “We believe in relationships and having an employee in an ambassador role is the least we could do to support our Chamber and the community.” Pool said she enjoys the opportunity to network with individuals and businesses throughout the Lubbock area. “Being able to actively welcome individuals and businesses into Lubbock is a huge part of what makes this city so special. I love the sense of community that the Chamber provides and I am truly honored to be a part of the Chamber Ambassadors; helping promote growth, strength, and relationships to Lubbock.”

Pool has been a part of Carpet Tech’s team for four and a half years. Being involved with Carpet Tech as well as being involved with the Chamber has created strong relationships throughout the community for her. “Having the honor to represent Carpet Tech within the community while forming irreplaceable friendships with other business representatives is one of the most rewarding parts of being an ambassador,” said Pool. “I love getting to serve this wonderful community through my involvement as well as having the opportunity to talk about Carpet Tech to so many people.” If you want to meet Pool, you won’t have to look far because she attends many Chamber events. Pool said she loves all of the Chamber events and enjoys being really involved in all of them. “My favorite though would probably be the Hub City BBQ!” Congratulations again Myndee, we are looking forward to celebrating your award with you at your favorite event in September. Business of the Month: Hillcrest Country Club By: Robin Raney & Keely Hamman

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Hillcrest Country Club for its over the top support of the Chamber’s golf tournament by awarding them with the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month award! After delays due to the Korean War, the golf course opened in 1953 with a traditional layout designed by Warren Cantrell. The course is set on the north side of Lubbock in a rocky, caliche-laced field loaded with deep gullies with the layout stretching 6,842 yards from the tips and plays to a par 72. Hillcrest, celebrating its 60th anniversary, has been in the Robertson family for the past 10 years and they have been actively renovating since claiming ownership.

8

The facilities include a championship golf course, eight outdoor tennis courts, swimming pool and a variety of dining options as well as an outdoor patio with a phenomenal view of the 18th hole. Hillcrest has been a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce since 2004 and an active supporter of Chamber golf events. “The Chamber Tournament is one of my favorite tournaments that we host,” said Jared Robertson, General Manager. “The Chamber’s staff and volunteers’ hard work are the reason that the tournament is such a success every year. Anybody who hasn’t played in this tournament is missing out on what I would consider as one of the best tournaments in Lubbock every year.” Congratulations again to Hillcrest Country Club and thank you for your continued support to the Lubbock Chamber. • Banquet facilities are available for member and nonmember use and can accommodate groups from 20 to 200. • For membership information, contact General Manager Jared Robertson at 765-6601 or jared@hillcrestcc.com.

“I couldn’t do it without my three G’s. My God, my guy and my girls.” DeVore named 2013 Small Business Person of the Year

By Keely Hamman

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce congratulates Susan DeVore, Diamontrigue of Lubbock, for winning ‘2013 Small Business Person of the Year – Lubbock Area’. Diamontrigue, a member of the Chamber since 2006, is “Lubbock’s every occasion jewelry store!” DeVore, a graduate of the Leadership Lubbock Program, has also been involved with the Chamber Ambassadors by hosting events at the store. “I also participate in the Chamber’s Health Care Plan which has been a great benefit, and have been involved in the Total Resource Campaign effort to reward Chamber volunteers for their services.” DeVore said that her involvement with the Chamber has helped herself and her business grow and improve each year. “I remember the other Leadership Lubbock participants the year I was involved and have contacted many of them through the years. Having other people to brainstorm with and problem solve has been invaluable over the years and the support of your peers is priceless. The Chamber has been very gracious to do ribbon cuttings when I first assumed ownership of the store and when we expanded in 2010 to our new location, said DeVore. “They celebrate, encourage and assist in any way they can. It provides us various opportunites to participate in the Lubbock business community and is still a go-to resource for me.” Although DeVore is busy with Diamontrique, she doesn’t keep all her “chickens in a basket”. DeVore is also a full time employee for Dr. Gray in Lubbock, while working at Diamontrigue at night and through her spare time. “I love what I do. It is worth every single moment. Good, bad, stressful or tiring, it is truly worth every single moment. And, I love Lubbock,” states DeVore. “I wouldn’t live anywhere but here!”

16

Diamontrigue its known for their premium quality diamond simulant jewelry, but also offer other unique national and international jewelry lines such as Chamilia, Ti Sento Milano, Phillip Gavriel, Karisma, and Fantasmania of Switzerland. Diamontrigue offers a no-commission salon style environment and also offer jewelry repair and custom design services. “We represent a practical, sensible and reasonable alternative to genuine diamonds for those who want the identical look, prestige and symbolism of the diamond for an investment that will fit their budget and offer a no interest, no time limit layaway plan,” said DeVore. “Our sales consultants do not work on a commission basis so it is a pressure-free shopping experience.” Diamontrigue tries to stand out from the rest by having excitment and creativity. “Every year we are doing things that have not been tried before,” DeVore stated. “Much more than that, what I think comes through in all our interations, whether it’s customers or colleagues, is that this isn’t just about growing a strong business, it’s about the belief that I have that Diamontrigue offers something unique both in the product and how people experience it and it’s our responsibility to keep that fresh. It’s a deep passion for helping celebrate the joyous, sentimental moments in life and the continual search to help people find the perfect gifts to do that. People share their lives and special moments with us and place their trust in us, and they tell us that no matter how much they have to spend on a gift, we make them feel as if they have purchased a very expensive piece of jewelry. They give so much to us, and in return we give back to them and the community at large as a way to thank them for giving us the opportunity to serve.”
