A Message from the Chamber Since 1913, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce’s mission of strengthening, promoting and serving its member businesses has positively benefited the entire region and local quality of life. As the largest business federation on the South Plains, the Chamber represents almost 2,200 members who employ approximately 73,000 workers, and account for around $900 million in economic impact in Lubbock and West Texas. This is accomplished without the use of tax dollars. Each day, the Chamber strengthens, promotes and serves its member businesses through numerous programs and events. The Chamber advocates on local, state and federal levels and offers diverse programs for both large and small as well as minority-owned businesses.

2014 Business Expo “Launching Bold Pursuits” was the theme for the 2014 Business Expo, presented by American National Bank, at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center on May 8. The largest business trade show on the South Plains featured over 200 business exhibitors and plenty of networking opportunities for both exhibitors and consumers. This year marked the 21st year of the Business Expo! The day began with an Exhibitor Only networking time, meant for exhibitors to meet and greet each other and learn more about each other’s businesses. This new feature proved to be a favorite feature for exhibitors this year! A celebratory ribbon cutting was held right before the doors opened to the public. New to Business Expo this year was the “Wellness Zone: Launchpad to a Healthier You,” held in the Banquet Hall. This area was reserved for businesses showcasing products, services and resources focused on fitness, health and wellness. The Wellness Zone drew 18 exhibitors and featured special door prizes donated by Chamber members, only available to visitors who

Cinco de Mayo Luncheon The Chamber’s Cinco de Mayo luncheon was held on Mon., May 5 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. The luncheon gave members of the Lubbock business community the opportunity to celebrate the Hispanic heritage common to many of our members and fellow citizens. The Imagine Lubbock Together Steering Committee held a Public Information Sharing Session on May 13, at the Studios at 5th and J (1106 5th Street) in the downtown arts and entertainment district. The event gave the public an opportunity to learn what has been happening with the Imagine Lubbock Together eight key element areas since the Implementation Phase started last July. Imagine Lubbock Together has enjoyed continued progress with many of its partners on the community-wide strategic plan based on its previous year-long visioning process. Introducting Newest Chamber Staff Members Meet Christye Weld, Vice President of Business Development The Chamber welcomes Christye Weld as Vice President of Business Development. Weld began her duties at the Chamber on March 17. A native of Abernathy, Texas, Weld joined the Chamber staff after serving two and a half years as Vice President of Marketing at Built for Dreams. Weld brings with her Chamber of Commerce experience as she spent three years as the Membership Representative at the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. She also has been actively involved with the Lubbock Chamber serving as an Ambassador. Weld, who received her Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University, currently sits on the Board of Directors for Goodwill Industries of North Texas and the Wine & Food Foundation of Texas.
As the Vice President of Business Development for the Chamber, Weld will work to increase the Chamber’s ability to offer stellar programs and services to its members by providing a core stream of diversified events that expand non-dues revenue, showcase member businesses and offer valuable networking opportunities. Other responsibilities include: organize, plan and coordinate the Chamber’s Business Expo and the Hub City BBQ Cook-off, identify issues that will impact Lubbock and member businesses, and formulate, prioritize and promote the business positions on behalf of the Chamber membership.
Meet Haily Assiter, Marketing Specialist A few months into her job, Haily Assiter has been in full swing as the Marketing Specialist in the Communications and Marketing Division. A native of Lubbock, Assiter came to the Chamber after spending the last two years working in Community Relations for the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Southwest in Lubbock. She received her bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Texas Tech University. Assiter is no stranger to the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce having served as an Ambassador for two years. As Marketing Specialist, she is responsible for communicating and marketing Chamber sponsorships; assisting with cre-
ating and implementing meaningful Chamber communications; and coordinating the Ambassadors program, ribbon cuttings/ground breakings, Business after Hours events and Chamber 101. Assiter has implemented a new media outlet for the Chamber to communicate through, during her time at the Chamber. Assiter has successfully launched “Chamber Chat,” a weekly Chamber news update.

High Plains Water District is a “Water-Smart Business“ Sandra Harris, Chairwoman of the Chamber Water-Smart Task Force, presented the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District its Water-Smart award this month.
New Century Leadership and Leadership Lubbock: A Year in Review Each year, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce provides opportunity for Chamber members to participate in the annual Leadership Lubbock program. Now in its 38th year, Leadership Lubbock boasts over 1,300 graduates. New this year to Leadership Lubbock were six leadership forums led by 1999 Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Chairman, David Miller, through Spirit Ranch. Miller’s wisdom and leadership training challenged the class to reach beyond their leadership skills and seek a higher understanding of what being a leader means, and how to achieve a balance in being a leader while serving their community. Modeled after Leadership Lubbock, New Century Leadership is a program specifically for high school juniors. Both programs teach leadership skills while introducing participants to community leaders, businesses, and organizations vital to our thriving economy. New Century Leadership students were given a leadership skill of the day to practice and learn firsthand. Each month featured a new skill that was incorporated into the day’s planning.
Leadercast 2014 Leadercast 2014 launched on May 9 at Bacon Heights Baptist Church. Leadercast is a leadership seminar, broadcast live globally. Designated locations, across the world, were invited to tune in and watch the program. This year’s list of speakers was comprised of Andy Stanley, Leadership Communicator and Best-Selling Author; Henry Cloud, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist and Leadership Consultant; Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Laureate and Human Rights Activist; Laura Schroff, Former Advertising Sales Executive and Best-Selling Author; Laura Bush, Former First Lady of the United

Interview skills, social media etiquette, and dining etiquette are just a few examples of what students learned. Both groups traveled throughout Lubbock and the surrounding community, going as far as Ropesville to visit Buster’s Gin during Ag & Energy Day or as close to home as the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts for Sports, Recreation & Entertainment Day. Llano Logistics provided a detailed tour of its facilities; The Triple J Chophouse & Brew Co. revealed how to make beer; the Byron Martin Technology Center provided an in-depth tour and explanation of its career training programs; and the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance presented an exciting overview of our current economic trends and the future of Lubbock. Each business who presented, spoke, visited and took time to teach left a mark on the classes, impressing upon students the value of smart business and learning about our community. Thank you to all of our presenters and guests who taught each class something new and for taking time to be with us.

June Business of the Month: Chick-fil-A The Chamber congratulates Chick-fil-A at South Plains Crossing and 82nd and Milwaukee for being named the Chamber’s June Business of the Month. Abie Rampy, Chick-fil-A’s Director of Marketing, said the Chamber has opened a door for Chick-fil-A to influence other businesses’ customer service practices by allowing Chickfil-A to present their model at Chamber University, as well as to Chamber members such as Walgreens and Texas Tech. “We feel that the Chamber has a giant impact in helping Chick-fil-A create business contacts through the many events such as the Business Expo, Hub City BBQ, and the golf tournament,” Rampy stated. “Our partnership has exposed our business to many local companies with catering needs, speaking engagements and community leadership.” Chick-fil-A has been a member of the Chamber since 1998.

“We know the true success of leaving a lasting impression in your local community is actually being seen in the community,” Rampy said. “The Chamber allows us to be present in the community where we can reach as many people as possible through charitable events and community involvement.” Chick-fil-A’s involvement in the Business Expo, Leadercast, golf tournament, Chamber University and Leadership Lubbock has created a channel that allows Chick-filA to be seen as a leader in Lubbock. The Chamber is proud to congratulate Chick-fil-A on its June Business of the Month achievement. Chick-fil-A, along with all of the other businesses of the month for 2014, will be considered for the Chamber’s Business of the Year award, in December 2014.

by Diana Fabing The Leadership Lubbock year drew to a close on May 20 with its annual banquet. After spending the last nine months trekking through the community together learning about our Chamber businesses, class members eagerly greeted each other and exchanged introductions with guests. Once classmates, they were now friends and a tight-knit group. It was a packed house at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center and the excitement grew as the audience moved into the banquet hall following the reception and cocktail opening. Chairwoman, Jeanna Roach, of Betenbough Homes greeted the audience and class member Raymond Richardson, Lubbock Christian University, gave a stirring invocation. Dr. Gary Schwantz asked the audience to remember grace and respect in business,

and to always treat others, as well as ourselves, with the highest human dignity. This year’s Distinguished Alumni was awarded to Matt Bumstead for his boundless energy and dedication to improving the Lubbock community. Greg Stevens, Lubbock Police Department, challenged the class to use its resources, focus, and time on people rather than objects and things to reap the highest satisfaction in life and work. The evening drew to a close with the introduction of the 2014-2015 Leadership Lubbock Steering committee. A tremendous thank you to our businesses who sponsored, presented and hosted the many events and programs held throughout the year.

April Ambassador of the Month: Rex Andrews Congratulations to Rex Andrews for being named Ambassador of the Month for the second consecutive month. Andrews represents Edge Concepts, Innovative Designs, Metro L&L, L.L.C., and Shaded Acres Tree & Boulder Farm. In April, Andrews earned 89 points. In 2014, Andrews’ Ambassador Team, Team Soliz, has earned 940 points. Andrews has contributed 272 of those points. In the Q&A below, we ask Andrews about what he has done to achieve his successful professional experiences. Andrews also gives advice to new Chamber members and ambassadors. What steps did you take to get to where you are today professionally? Seeking God’s advice daily. Connecting with the proper people. Don’t take no for an answer. What steps did you take to get to where you are today in the LCOC? Once I became an Ambassador, I took full advantage of what the organization was designed for. I used my membership to get to know other people that could help benefit the businesses that I represent, and made great contacts and friends along the way.

What advice do you have for aspiring sales representatives? Be honest. Do exactly what you say you’re going to do. Answer your phone. If you don’t have the answer find it in a very short time. Return calls. If you say you are going to be there, then be there. Be on time always, and on time is at least five minutes early. If you sell yourself, you can sell anyone. Smile! What advice do you have for new Chamber members? If you’re going to spend the money to be a member, then be involved. Go to all activities available when your job allows, shake hands, tell people what you do and how your company can help theirs. What advice do you have for new Chamber ambassadors? Congratulations, Team Soliz, Ambassador Team of the Month! Team Soliz finished April with 272 points and 71 percent participation. To date, Team Soliz has earned 940 points this year. The Chamber’s ambassador program is comprised of 194 ambassadors, representing their member businesses. These 194 ambassadors are split up into five teams. Ambassadors compete, every month, for the most patricipation in ambassador events. Ambassadors are most commonly seen welcoming new businesses and helping existing businesses celebrate milestones at ribbon cuttings and ground breakings. They also serve as greeters and hosts for monthly luncheon meetings, Business After Hours, Chamber 101, and a number of other Chamber special events, receptions, meetings, etc. If you are interested in sponsoring the Ambassador Team of the Month Award through June 2015 or if you are interested in becoming an ambassador, please contact Haily Assiter, Marketing Specialist, at haily.assiter@lubbockbiz.org or by phone at (806) 761-7003.

Board Member Spotlight: Sidney Hopper Getting to know Sidney Hopper, Board gaining a better understanding of how Member. they can serve in their communities. How did you get involved with the Chamber and what keeps you involved? I had been involved with the Chamber in other communities that I had lived in, and have always appreciated the role they play in supporting business in our communities. When Eddie called and asked if I would serve it was an easy decision. What is your favorite event or program of the Chamber? I feel that the Chamber has many valuable programs for its members to benefit from, however, I personally think the Leadership Program is one of the best. Our company has used the Chamber Leadership program in all of our markets as part of our internal leadership development program. We have found the opportunity it presents for some of our up and coming leaders is invaluable in the relationships they build as well as
What are some of your other community leadership roles? I am leading our company’s United Way campaign this year. I also currently serve as vice-president of our Foundation Board, which handles all charitable giving and donations in all of our trade areas. Finish this sentence: Never again will I... underestimate the power of people working together with the same purpose and overcoming obstacles to achieve great results. I have the opportunity to work alongside over 12,000 outstanding team members every day and see first hand what they can accomplish working together and how dedicated they are to serving our guests. 2014 Community Prayer Breakfast The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Community Prayer Breakfast May 1 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. The Community Prayer Breakfast started years ago and has been tied to the National Day of Prayer during the month of May. Each year, the breakfast features a Christian speaker or performer to present a message to the business community honoring the National Day of Prayer. This year’s performer was Award-winning contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Jason Gray. Gray garnered his first No. 1 single when “Nothing is Wasted” reached the top spot on the Soft Adult Contemporary Chart in May 2013. Also, that same month, he was honored at the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers’ (ASCAP) 35th Annual Christian Music Awards with the “Most Performed Song Award” for his song “Good to Be Alive”. The song was a top five single on Christian radio and was released on Gray’s album A Way to See in the Dark.
