Total Resource Campaign, TRC Network, Underway! The 2017 Total Resource Campaign (TRC), TRC Network, kicked off in February and will run through April 14. The eight-week campaign features the best volunteers in town. They are out in the community securing sponsorships from local business members for all Chamber events and programs. By participating in the TRC, businesses receive significant exposure by being included in the marketing and promotions for the events they choose to sponsor. The TRC has more than 60 dedicated volunteers this year with a goal to raise $535,000. Last year, with a goal of $510,000, the TRC volunteers were able to exceed expectations by raising more than $540,000. Volunteers form divisions having a minimum monetary goal. The volunteers who reach benchmark achievements are
awarded prizes throughout the campaign at weekly reward sessions. If you’re interested in sponsoring an event, please contact Sheri Nugent at sheri.nugent@ lubbockbiz.org or call (806) 761- 7000. Introducing our March Business of the Month, Wayland Baptist University How has being a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce helped to increase your business, relationships in the business community and/or community involvement? Being a part of the Chamber has allowed us to raise our awareness in the community and reach out to our target student base, which is primarily members of the business community that are looking to advance their careers.
hours, you are able to build friendships through the chamber while promoting your business. In what ways is Wayland Baptist University involved with the Chamber? We are sponsors and participants of the Community Prayer Luncheon, the Business Expo, and this year we will be at the Hub City BBQ. We also host the annual TRC trainings for new TRC volunteers.
When/Why did the Wayland Baptist University join the Chamber? We have been a member of the Chamber for as long as any of us have been here. We joined the Chamber to be a good corporate citizen and community partner in Lubbock. We realize the strength of the Lubbock Chamber is something that is unique and allows Lubbock to be a great place to live and work.
Does Wayland Baptist University have a favorite Chamber event? We love that the Chamber does the prayer breakfast and luncheon every year. It is a great event that brings the community together and helps spread the love of Jesus. We also are very fond of the Hub City BBQ. We have several employees that have been judges in the past and we look forward to cooking in it this year. There is nothing as tasty as a good Texas BBQ!
What is your favorite part of being a member of the Chamber? The relationships you build with fellow chamber members, whether it is serving on committees or meeting at business after
Don’t miss Wayland Baptist’s 11th Annual Lubbock Lights Scholarship Gala in Memory of Jon Randles. Click here for more information.
Get to Know Board Member, Alona Beesinger Where do you work and what does your job entail? I am employed with Suddenlink Communications. I am the Sales and Community Manager. I have a Direct Sales Department with two supervisors and 24 employees and the Retail Lobby with one supervisor and 10 employees. I oversee both of those departments and also anything to do with Community or PR for all of Lubbock. How did you get involved with the Chamber and what keeps you involved? I have been involved with the Lubbock Chamber for many years. Working for another company, SPS, I was a member and my boss served as Chairman so very quickly was immersed in all things Chamber. One of best memories was serving on the inaugural Committee for Champions. I was selected to be a part of one of the classes of Leadership Lubbock and was also on the Steering Committee for that great group for a couple of years. When Irasema Velasquez was Chairwoman, she asked me to serve on the Board of Directors, which was a dream of mine. I served as Chairwoman of the TRC, Board Treasurer, Board Chair Elect and in 2014 served as Chairwoman of the best and awarding-winning Chamber. What a thrill and honor. I stay involved because of the great staff and fellow board members. They provide a voice for the Lubbock Business Community and I am very proud of their record. What is your favorite event or program of the Chamber? All of the events and programs are awesome. My personal favorite is the Hub City BBQ. What a fun event that just keeps on growing. I think it provides great awareness to our community about the Chamber and its programs and benefits. You are able to network with so many people and it is a wonderful team builder for the companies that participate.
Alona Beesinger
Sales and Community Manager Suddenlink Communications What are some of your other community leadership roles? I have served in many capacities for different groups and boards throughout the community. We have so many worthy organizations that it is hard to refuse anyone. However, since Suddenlink has been involved with a work transition and I have accepted an early retirement offer, I have stepped down from most of the boards I have served on and just concentrate on the Chamber Board. Finish this sentence: Never again will I...think that I cannot learn something new. I just love how much you can still learn and grow in all areas of your life if you just open up to the possibilities!

YEA! Spotlight: Meet Young Entrepreneur Alpha Garcia Meet Young Entrepreneur’s Academy participant Alpha Garcia. Garcia is 18 years old and attends Springboard Academics. He is eager to learn about entrepreneurship and how to start his own business. His mother has always encouraged him to want more for himself. “The world is full of opportunity, you just have to take it”, a motto she reminds him of regularly. She inspires him to be more and to give more in all that he does. Garcia learned of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy by attending the Workforce Solutions Youth Job Fair in April of 2016. He was so excited to learn that this type of program existed in Lubbock. He left his resume and applied as soon as he could. Having a love for animals and volunteering, Garcia has begun working on a business plan to start his own dog training business. He will come to your home and work with your furry animals one-on-one. He bought his first puppy, Rachel, when he was 15 years old, and he said “it was the best investment I have ever made”. So he wants others to make an investment in their pets and get them trained the right way.

Lubbock Business Network Legislative Benefactor:
Voice of Business Chamber and Local Business Leaders Spend Day at State Capitol More than 130 local city officials and business leaders flooded the Texas State Capitol on Feb. 22 to give the Lubbock community a spotlight as well as the opportunity to meet legislators and discuss issues important to the area economy. Every two years the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce plans a trip for business leaders to go to Austin to meet with legislators. While there for the 85th Legislative session, Chamber leadership discussed issues important to the Lubbock business community, including: • Amend the Tax Code to allow Lubbock to pledge the revenue derived from the municipal hotel occupancy tax for the payment of bonds issued for an eligible project. • Support LP&L’s efforts to move into ERCOT. • Create a TCEQ funding stream to pay for failed permitted recycling centers around the state. Lubbock’s I-27 site is by far the largest of these in the state. • Support adequately increasing the amount allotted for facility maintenance in the budget of the Texas Army

•
National Guard to receive matching federal funds designated to complete the necessary upgrades and renovations of the Lubbock Armed Forces Reserve Center and other like projects. Support Texas Tech University in its pursuit for a substantial increase in formula funding--for both instruction and infrastructure. This will allow all higher education entities to fulfill their missions of instruction, research and public service with less cost shifting to the students (ie, tuition and fee increases).
Lubbock Day at the State Capitol kicked off with a Legislative Reception at the Sheraton Austin Hotel on Tues., Feb. 21, and was made up of a Legislative Breakfast at the Sheraton, group photo and legislative briefing at the Capitol, and recognition in the House and Senate. The day wrapped up with a luncheon featuring Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush.

Chamber Ambassador Program Meet Danny Soliz, January Ambassador of the Month! Congratulations to Danny Soliz for being named the January Ambassador of the Month. Soliz joined the Chamber Ambassador Program 16 years ago and has won this award four times! “I chose to become an Ambassador for the various networking opportunities and to follow up with businesses to inform them of Chamber services and programs. It also allows me the opportunity to tell others about Workforce Solutions,” Soliz said. Soliz has been employed by Workforce Solutions South Plains for 16 years as the Director of Business Development. “In this capacity, I have the opportunity to work with Economic Development Corporations, Chamber of Commerce’s, Employers and Dislocated Workers. In our 15 county local workforce development area, I work closely with local businesses, educational institutions, other Boards and related organizations to plan and coordinate training opportunities, such as Skills Development, Skills for Small Businesses and other related training programs,” stated Soliz. Soliz has worn many hats as an Ambassador over the last 16 years and strongly believes that the most rewarding part of being an ambassador is meeting new people and building
relationships. In true Chamber Ambassador spirit, some of his favorite Chamber events to volunteer for include The Business Expo, Hub City BBQ Cook-off and the Chamber Golf Classic. Danny Soliz receives his Ambassador of the Soliz lends much of his Month Award from Chairwoman Diannah Tatum. time to the chamber and continues active with Chamber events over the years. He recently joined the Agriculture and Hub City BBQ Cook-off committees. Outside of the chamber Soliz enjoys serving as a Board of Director for local Society of Human Resources 186. Community Prayer Luncheon to Feature Stars from Movie: I’ll Push You Mark your calendars for this year’s Community Prayer Luncheon that will be held on Thurs., May 4, at 11:30 a.m., at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. We are excited to bring you two phenomenal speakers in Patrick Gray and Justin Skeesuck, best friends who completed the 500-mile pilgrimage called Camino de Santiago. This was not your ordinary pilgrimage as Skeesuck lives life in a wheelchair due to a progressive neuromuscular disease. Over the past 20plus years, the disease has slowly taken away Skeesuck’s ability to use his arms and legs. In the spring of 2012, Skeesuck learned about the Camino de Santiago and asked his lifelong friend, Gray, what he thought about tackling the ancient pilgrimage. Gray’s response was “I’ll push you.” Two years later, they started their 34-day journey. Both Gray and Skeesuck are married and each have three children. They founded Push, Inc. where they help organizations and individuals realize they can achieve more, together. Since their return from Spain, Skeesuck and Gray have been delivering messages of hope, faith, friendship, leadership and the power of community. The two have a film being made about their friendship and journey, which is scheduled to be released in early fall of 2017. Tickets for the Community Prayer Luncheon will go on sale the end of March at LubbockChamber.com.
