He was also recognized by the Lincoln Business Journal as one of Lincoln’s 40 Under 40-business achievement award winners. The cost of the luncheon is $50. Introducing our November Business of the Month, Tailgate Express How did Tailgate Express start? Tailgate Express began during owner, John English’s senior year of college when he encountered a need for a tailgating service at Texas Tech University football games. English and his friends were tailgating before a game and multiple people from other tailgate parties wanted to run extension cords to his generator for electricity. One person offered to pay him $20 and that's when he realized that a tailgate service was needed. With thousands of fans outside the stadium in an unorganized chaotic environment, the chances of them needing supplies and the hassle they might go through to get them was a problem. English knew a tailgate service was the solution to that problem and that he could create a successful business model. Whether it was confidence in the business model or just an overwhelming adrenaline rush, English woke up Sunday morning, went to FedEx, and printed off 500 business cards with three phrases. Tailgate Express--John English--806-789-7085. Growing up in the country allowed English the opportunity to be around farming equipment, such as, generators. A portable generator is key to any tailgate because it is the power supply for any electronic device (tv's, speaker systems, space heaters, crockpots, etc). English also had an abnormal supply of generators back at the family barn because of a previous family business. After making sure they were all still working, he picked up his cell phone and called every tailgater he knew who might need a generator for the upcoming game. English had all of them rented out by the end of the day, totaling a whopping $150 for all three. Of course this price came with a full tank of gas, complete service, extension cord, and power strip. From that point on Tailgate Express blossomed into what it is today. The next Saturday a tailgate party asked if they could supply a TV service at their tailgate location. Without thinking twice English said no problem. English rushed to his dorm room, yanked the two TV's he owned off the wall and by the following Saturday Tailgate Express was providing a satellite TV service at different tailgate locations. One tailgate request led to another and by year two Tailgate Express was providing full service tailgate parties at Texas Tech University, Cowboys Stadium, and TCU’s stadium. This included complete setup and teardown of tailgate locations while renting out tents, TV's, speaker systems, generators, tables and chairs. English then struck a deal with a local catering company to provide the food at their events and a beer distributor to supply the alcohol. With these two important additions English finally had the complete Tailgate Express business model. A full service tailgating company allowing the fan a stress free way to enjoy their college football game day experience. They show up to their tailgate party and never worry about having enough beverages, or tearing down all the equipment after the game is over. No Hassle, No Stress... TAILGATE EXPRESS!
What is Tailgate Express’ core values, goals and overall mission? Tailgate Express strives to bring family and friends together to experience an outdoor event unique in design and festive in participation. Not only is it English’s goal to accomplish this for his clients, but also for his employees. Tailgate Express was started by a group of English’s closest friends and after three years of being in business this is still true today. Not often can you find a business being successfully ran by a group of friends. Tailgate Express is a very unique business model inside and out. In fact, the general manager of Tailgate Express is English’s brother. They know they have a service that can drastically change the way people enjoy their game day experience and it motivates them to bring outstanding customer service with a hard working mentality to every event they put on. A personal mission of English’s has been to bring his friends and family together to not only enjoy one another in a unique environment, such as tailgating, but most importantly learn to serve others. If you look up the definition of "service”, it is the action of helping or doing work for someone. To establish a company based upon service requires the willingness and ability to help someone else. This is a goal that English has instilled in all of his employees. Through teamwork and hard work English knows they can make a huge difference in the way people attend sporting events. How has being a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce helped to increase Tailgate Express’ business, relationships in the business community and/or community involvement? English said the chamber has been very proactive in boosting their business since becoming a member in August of 2015. “Last year, the chamber came out to Jones Stadium and provided an awesome ribbon cutting ceremony that drew over 100 people. There have been countless times that Tailgate Express has benefited from being a member of the Chamber of Commerce, as we’ve been able to serve other chamber members who enjoy tailgating,” stated English. English has also had the opportunity to coordinate with other business who are chamber members in sales, partnerships and community service projects. What is Tailgate Express’ favorite part of being a member of the Chamber? English said Tailgate Express loves being able to assist and provide service for the multiple special events that the Chamber does each year through donating generators, tents and service for the Hub City BBQ, Lubbock Uncorked and Cinco de Mayo to name a few.

Get to Know Board Member, Shannon Spencer How did you get involved with the Chamber and what keeps you involved? I have attended several Chamber events while on staff at the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains. My first connection with the Chamber, was being a lead for a focus group with Imigane Lubbock Together. I attended the training and it was impactful and inspiring. I knew then that I wanted to get more involved and I began to seek out other opportunities. I applied twice to participate in Leadership Lubbock and in 2013 I was selected. It was an experince of a lifetime. I often think back on the day I jumped off the pole and prayed that my team was holding on to the line with everything they had. I made great friends that day! I stay involved because Lubbock is a great place to live, work and worship. The Chamber, being a two-time Five Star Accredited Chamber and Chamber of the Year does a tremdeous job at promoting and serving its member businesses.
What are some of your other community leadership roles? I am the Membership Chair for the East Lubbock Community Alliance. I have been involved in Junior Leage since 2011 and currently I serve on the Leadership Team as the Administrative Coordinator. I am also an active member of the Estacado High School Booster Club. Go Matadors!
What is your favorite event or program of the Chamber? I would have to say Leadership Lubbock is my favorite program, and the Business Expo is my favorite event. Each year, I look forward to seeing businness promotions, as well as the great networking opportunities it offers.

Learn the Essential Elements of an Excellent Team at Chamber University The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce will host a Chamber University seminar on “Essential Elements of an Excellent Team” on Thurs., Nov. 17, from 8-11:30 a.m. at Sanford & Tatum Insurance Agency. The seminar will focus on the essential elements to build an excellent team. In work as in life, you can accomplish more as a team than you can by yourself, but there is a big difference between working together and merely working in the same place. The featured speaker will be Randy Anderson, co-founder of E3 Professional Trainers, which is a Lubbock-based training firm that provides workplace and life training for individuals, teams and companies. In his presentation, you’ll learn practical ways to help draw your people together to work toward common goals, and to share the mutual responsibility and accountability for accomplishing those goals. From identifying the characteristics that make a great teammate, to understanding and maximizing the five key human motivators, this approach to building a team will allow you to lead your team to produce greater results.
Chamber University is designed to address critical business topics and offer tools to navigate and thrive in the ever-changing demands of the 21st century workplace. The cost of the seminar is $50. Chamber members get a discounted price of $35. Breakfast and check-in will be from 8-8:30 a.m. Click here to register or you can call (806) 761-7000. Chamber Ambassador Program Meet Traci Cheek, September Ambassador of the Month! Congratulations to Traci Cheek with the Texas Boys Ranch on her September Ambassador of the Month award! Cheek has been an ambassador for 12 years and received two other Ambassador awards previous to this month’s award, including Ambassador of the Quarter and Ambassador of the Year in 2011. The Texas Boys Ranch was established in Lubbock 41 years ago by concerned community partners. Cheek has been with the Texas Boys Ranch almost two years. As the Development Officer, Cheek helps raise funds and awareness for Texas Boys Ranch and is also responsible for their Annual Telethon. The Texas Boys Ranch started out serving boys only, but they recently started serving girls as well in order to keep sibling groups together. Cheek said her motivation for joining the Chamber as an Ambassador was to network her business. “I wanted to be part of the best Chamber of Commerce in the United States! I also wanted to network my business and I knew that the Chamber Ambassador program was my best bet,” Cheek said. Cheek believes that the Chamber Ambassador Program has given her the chance to share her love for Lubbock and the Texas Boys Ranch in the community. She also said the most rewarding part about being and Ambassador is meeting and forming relationships with people in the Lubbock Community. “The Ambassador program enables me to meet people I wouldn’t normally have a chance to meet. I have made lifelong friendships in the Ambassador program over the last 12 years,” stated Cheek. Cheek’s favorite Chamber event to attend is the Ribbon Cuttings because she gets to be a part of the new business’ special day and learn more about them. Her favorite event overall is the Business Expo because she gets to spend the day with her friends in the Lubbock community. The newest Chamber event
Cheek participated in was Lubbock Uncorked. She said she was impressed with the event turnout and how efficiently the Chamber staff and their committee put it together. Cheek said that when she is not devoting her time to the Chamber or working, she is volunteering with other organizations and spending time with her family. Cheek is a member of AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals) and the Lubbock Lion’s Club. “If I’m not working, you will find me with my husband of 31 years, Billy Cheek, hanging out, cooking, traveling and enjoying life. One of our favorites is spending time together with our children and grandchildren. I am blessed,” said Cheek. Again, congratulations to Traci Cheek on earning this award. We appreciate all that she does for the Lubbock Chamber and our community!
