Mayor Dan Pope will kick-off the Mayor’s Fitness Council initiative during a news conference on Wed. Sept. 6. The event will take place at Roscoe Wilson Elementary School, 2807 25th Street, and it will start at 8:30 a.m. The Mayor’s Fitness Council aims to bring together key community stakeholders and city leaders, as well as local individuals and youth, organizations, agencies, churches, and businesses that share the vision of a healthier community. The group will focus on two primary goals: endorsement of local fitness and wellness events that support the Fitness Council’s mission and establishment of a signature event to promote and unify Lubbock’s health and wellness organizations. The Fitness Council initiative is a collaborative effort between the City of Lubbock and Healthy Lubbock, a program of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Garrison Institute on Aging. It includes members from Texas Tech University, local hospitals, schools, health organizations and registered dietitians. Introducing our September Business of the Month, Geiger – Kathy Timms How has being a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce helped to increase your business, relationships in the business community and/ or community involvement? I became involved in the Chamber soon after I started my career in the promotional/marketing industry. The Chamber and the many events and programs they have offer business people the opportunity to meet and work with each other. I have literally grown my business from the contacts I’ve made as a Chamber member. When did Geiger join the Chamber? I’ve been doing this for about 13 years. I officially joined in November 2014 as Geiger. What is your favorite part of being a member of the Chamber? Building friendships with local business people. In what ways is Geiger involved with the Chamber? In 2008 I served as the Ambassador Chairperson, Ambassador of the Year in 2009 and am still active in the Ambassador program. I also served as Chairperson of the EXPO Committee in 2012 and most recently served as Chairperson of the Golf Committee. I am also the Volunteer Chairperson for Lubbock Uncorked. Some of the functions I participate in are the Business Expo, Business After Hours and any Networking opportunities.

Does Geiger have a favorite Chamber event? That’s easy!!! The Chambers newest event – Lubbock Uncorked!! This event has been around only two years. I have been involved since its inception. I feel that this event will one day grow into a community event that people will travel to Lubbock, TX to participate in!! It’s so much fun to watch it grow. A little bit more about Geiger...Geiger is the largest family owned promotional products company in the country, established in 1878 by three brothers in Lewiston, Maine. Geiger got its start by publishing the Farmers’ Almanac, which is still in print today. Geiger supports a sales force of more than 450 promotional consultants in nearly every state servicing more than 50,000 customers. We are customer focused – providing Brandspiration® through creative promotional solutions. When a promotion is executed with just the right product and a creative flair, it’s called Brandspiration. No firm has won more industry awards than ours. Let us use the power of Brandspiration to help you dazzle and inspire.

LCU’s Steve Gomez Highlights Hispanic Heritage Luncheon Make plans now to attend the 2017 Hispanic Heritage Luncheon, on Wed., Oct. 11, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the LCU Baker Conference Center (5601 19th Street). The featured speaker of the luncheon will be Steve Gomez, head women’s basketball coach at Lubbock Christian University, the 2016 NCAA Divsion II National Champions. Gomez has been at the helm of the women’s basketball program Steve Gomez at LCU for 10 seasons, and has Head Women’s Basketball Coach Lubbock Christian University changed the foundation of the program during his tenure there. Along with winning the national championship in 2016, Gomez claimed WBCA NCAA Div. II National Coach of the Year honors. Gomez also spent a portion of the offseason as a court coach at the 2016 USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Learn what is takes to motivate a team to achieve this kind of success while keeping its core values that help shape a culture of inclusion and diversity. Gomez will share a little bit about his background and how it shaped him while he delivers a message emphasizing what unifies us more than what sets us apart. Tickets for the luncheon are $40. Get to Know Board Member, Fernando Bustos Where do you work and what does your job entail? I am president of the Bustos Law Firm, P.C. We are a full service law firm, primarily doing business and employment litigation, plus contract drafting, estate, probate and immigration law. How did you get involved with the Chamber and what keeps you involved? Fernando Bustos Our firm has been a Lubbock Chamber President Bustos Law Firm, P.C. member from inception. I was privileged to recently represent the Chamber where we obtained a nationwide permanent injunction in Lubbock federal court against the Obama-era Department of Labor Persuader Rule, that would have stripped small businesses of their right to receive confidential attorneyclient advice. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving Lubbock businesses as a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

What is your favorite event or program of the Chamber? Leadership Lubbock is a great program that allows young professionals to meet each other and learn about the different sectors of the local economy and government that make Lubbock such a great place to live. What are some of your other community leadership roles? It has been a privilege to serve as a past director of the Lubbock County Bar Association, and as Chairman of the Court Advisory Committee for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas. I have also enjoyed serving as a Scoutmaster in my sons’ Boy Scout troop over the years. Finish this sentence: Never again will I…celebrate New Year’s Eve in Times Square! Coldest night of my life, and being up close and personal with half a million revelers was quite an experience.

Growing Community Leaders Meet Leadership Lubbock Class Member, Yvonne Limon Why did you choose to become part of the Leadership Lubbock Class? I chose to be a part of the Leadership Lubbock class because I knew that through this program, I would have an indepth look at all of the wonderful companies, nonprofit organizations and community programs that make our city such a wonderful place to live in! I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by amazing co-workers, colleagues and friends, and 99% of them are Leadership Lubbock graduates. Leadership Lubbock provides an outlet for networking, building relationships and serving our community, all of which are things that I strive to do professionally and personally. When I expressed an interest to my employer, Lee Lewis Construction, my supervisor was 100% supportive—I am blessed to work for a company built upon relationships and community! What have been some of your favorite Leadership Lubbock class days this far? My classmates and I joke that we say “This is the best one yet!” after every class day! From the very beginning, the days have been so well-organized and full of great information. Two days that are forever engrained in my mind are Sports & Recreational Day and Health & Medical Day. During Sports & Recreational day, Jeffery Earls, Associate Director of Football Strength and Conditioning for Texas Tech University spoke to us about the importance of identifying culture within your environment and it was so invigorating! Culture is something that is overlooked in organizations and in life, and realizing that we are ALL responsible in defining and developing our cultures reiterated that we are all in this together and should empower one another. The second day that I’ll never forget is Health & Medical Day. Overall, the entire day was enlightening and really made me thankful for the community we live in! Lubbock is not only full of the most elite doctors and nurses, but we have an educational facility that trains the best healthcare professionals in the nation! Part of our day was a tour of the Children’s Hospital at Covenant and we learned about Lindsey’s Park, a playroom in Covenant donated by Lindsey Callaway Memorial Toy Drive, an organization started by the family of Lindsay Callaway, a young girl who stayed at Covenant while battling cancer. Hearing Lindsey’s story was a true testament to the amazing work and kind people at Covenant — I was so touched by how many wonderful people we have in Lubbock and how our healthcare system can provide comfort to those in times of tragedy. What do you feel is the most rewarding part of being part of this year’s class? The most rewarding part of this year’s class would have to be the relationships with my classmates and the committee. I am amazed at the bond formed amongst 45 strangers in less than a year! Our class is very diverse yet the common bond of love of our community is what allowed us to connect so quickly. I truly believe that the friendships built in Leadership Lubbock will continue way beyond graduation — I am forever grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the 2017 Leadership Lubbock class!

10

Why is the Leadership Lubbock program important to you? Initially, Leadership Lubbock was important to me because it offered a unique perspective to the key places in Lubbock. I wanted to grow professionally and knew that Leadership Lubbock would allow me to network and tell our company’s story. Now that I am immersed in the program, in addition to the professional growth, what is now important to me are the relationships that I have formed with my classmates. The ability to pick up the phone at any time and know that a classmate will be there to help me with whatever I need, no questions asked is something that I definitely did not expect! These relationships go beyond acquaintances, they are genuine friends who has shared the same experiences with you for a year. Leadership Lubbock has surpassed all of my expectations and is truly a once in a lifetime experience that all Lubbockites need to be a part of! Who do you work for? I work for Lee Lewis Construction, Inc., a local construction firm formed in 1976 with aspirations of becoming one of best firms in the nation. Lee Lewis built this company on the philosophy that everyone within our organization works for the project Owner, and their needs are of the utmost importance. This philosophy is our foundation and has proven to be the key for steady growth and development. We are currently one of the largest construction firms in Engineering News Record’s Top 400 Contractors and have two satellite offices in Dallas and Austin. What is your position? What all does your position entail? I am the Marketing Coordinator for the Lubbock Office. I work directly with the Pre-Construction Team in composing responses to proposals, as well as handle our social media pages, advertisements and community relations. My job is different from day-to-day and is fast-paced; but, I wouldn’t have it any other way! I meet and collaborate with different people on a daily basis and for me, there is no greater joy than knowing I had a small part in something so much larger than myself! How long have you been with your current company? I have been with Lee Lewis Construction, Inc. for 18 months. Share some info about your family...The majority of my immediate family is here in Lubbock. Two of the most important people in my life, my mom and my aunt, both work for local non-profit organizations here in Lubbock. My mother is the Chief Operations Officer for Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Southwest and my aunt is the Director for United Future Leaders at Texas Tech University’s Center for Adolescent Resiliency. Both of these women have been influential in shaping me into the woman I am today. They have instilled in me the importance of hard work, relationships, and community service.

Chamber Ambassador Program Meet Marie Evans, July Ambassador of the Month! Congratulations to Marie Evans for being named the July Ambassador of the Month. Evans is no stranger to winning Ambassador awards as she has been the Ambassador of the Month before as well as being the Ambassador of the Year in 2005. “When I moved to Lubbock almost 14 years ago, I knew I would be joining the Chamber as I had belonged to the Sunnyvale, California, Chamber and was active in the Ambassadors group so it was a natural for me to do so here,” said Evans. The Ambassador group has been an important asset for Evans as it has helped her get to know more about the community and what all is happening around the city. “I have learned about a number of great non-profit organizations and what they do as many of those people are Ambassadors,” Evans stated. Evans was an independent sales representative for Geiger for 28 years before retiring from selling promotional items. “When I retired, I was presented, by Eddie McBride, a lifetime honorary membership in the Chamber so I wouldn’t quit doing what I was doing. So I guess I am still doing it since I won this award this month,” Evans said. For Evans, it is important to be a member of the Chamber and to be an active Ambassador.

Marie Evans (middle) was recognized at the monthly Ambassador Luncheon for winning the July Ambassador of the Month award.

“You don’t stop doing when you get old, you get old when you stop doing,” said Evans. Again, congratulations to Evans for earning the Ambassador of the Month award! We appreciate the time and commitment she has dedicated to the Chamber and our Ambassador Program.
