Care for Clinical Teams: Moby on Duty! Moby has been on duty since March and doing amazing work with staff, faculty, and trainees to provide well-being and resilience throughout the Mount Sinai Hospital system! In April, Moby began his rotations in the adult intensive care units and pediatric emergency department for support sessions. The Clinical teams love snuggling on the floor with Moby and posing for photo-ops with their furry co-worker! On April 25, Moby attended the Mount Sinai STAR awards, the peer-to-peer recognition and reward program that focuses on commitment to excellence.

Patient Spotlight: Kayla and Amos Kayla and Amos met each other when Kayla was admitted to P2 last year and have continued their friendship even when Kayla is not in the hospital. Amos helped Kayla adjust to being in the hospital and would spend time snuggling in bed and playing in the Zone. Using her creativity, Kayla penned the following poem about Amos, which will also be featured in our upcoming edition of SUGE: The Zone’s Teen Literary Magazine:

“Amos makes me happy | I love dogs | Most dogs are cool, except Amos is a goldendoodle and is friendly. If Amos were a flower, he’d be a daisy | He’s a fluffy could, a quiet afternoon, a Reese's peanut butter cup | He’s like Hawaii, where you can relax on the beach with a towel and sunscreen and sandwiches and a big bottle of water Before Amos visits me, I feel depressed (being in the hospital is depressing) | But when Amos comes its extreme happiness because he’s a dog, and his fur is soft, and he can swim like me!”

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) Research Study The Paws & Play team is conducting research on Professor’s impact on patient distress during needle stick procedures with our pediatric hematology/oncology patients in our outpatient clinic. Professor and certified child life specialist, Ali Spike, provide AAT to patients during procedures. This may include utilizing Professor for comfort positioning, encouraging patient to pet Professor for relaxation, or using Professor for distraction during anxiety provoking procedures. This study will bring important information about how Animal-Assisted Therapy impacts patient distress, and we will be able to share our results with the healthcare community.

Nurse Appreciation Week

In May, our pups spread furry love throughout the hospital to honor our talented nursing staff for Nurses Week! Professor, Moby, and Amos spent time on the pediatric inpatient units, outpatient hem/onc clinic, adult ICU’s, and pediatric emergency department giving extra love to our dedicated nurses. On Friday, May 10th, Moby and Professor attended the Nurses Appreciate Breakfast to meet the evening nurses are not able to spend time receiving AAT.
