The ruins of the Farugin farm are located near the Parco delle Gole della Breggia, more precisely in the town of Castel S. Pietro. The project starts from the idea of keeping the existing walls in stone, as if they were real roots, in order to remember the farm that once existed. The decision to add concrete to the existing stone stems from the fact of wanting to create a sort of fortress or shelter, where people can rest and where the surrounding nature can be lived. The focal point on which most of the building is concentrated is the fireplace, as it is the only part that has remained almost completely intact, and because it has always represented the symbol of a warm and welcoming environment. Accompanying the strong stone and concrete walls is the vegetable garden, chestnuts and walnuts, as one of the initial goals was to design a sort of farm where one could feed on nature itself.

Thanks to Valentin Bearth’s atelier, I had the opportunity to approach the architectural design in a more detailed way. The theme of the first semester was the “Mediterranean villa and the context was the beautiful landscape of the Kornati Islands national park in Croatia. The intention is to take advantage of the elements that the territory offers trying to recreate a place that can be comfortable and at the same time that can follow and respect those that are the characteristics of the place. The project is a guest house with three bedrooms, a dining room with a kitchen and a living room. Each room has a private bathroom illuminated by a zenithal light, and a terrace in which visitors can enjoy the view in a more private way. The reuse of the ruins of the stone walls on the site, consistent with the context, defines a private garden that connects to the pier, which is also existing and redeveloped, which creates a direct connection between the house and the sea.

In the second semester we explored the theme of housing into an urban setting. the building is located in a place of great prestige, Canal Grande in Venice, more precisely at the intersection with the church of San Geremia. The project intends to respect the characteristics of Venetian buildings but in a more contemporary way. The building is intended to accommodate architecture students so the ground floor is dedicated to work and study spaces, while on the upper floors there are the bedrooms, divided by the large Venetian salon, typical of this city. The main structure consists in plastered honeycomb bricks and wooden beams. The study of the facade was one of the most complex aspects since the facade had to relate to such an important context. As with most Venetian buildings, the distribution of the different rooms and therefore the different functions of the building can be understood from the composition of the faรงade openings.

With the Atelier Nunes e Gomes da Silva I explored the theme of the landscape architecture. The project concern the study and the analysis of the Certosa island in Venice and to think how to retrain the area. With this project I focused my attention on the relationship between the city of Venice and the islands that surround it. The intention is to design a park in which venetians, can find different atmospheres in the middle of the nature detached from the city. My reference is the “Danteum by Giuseppe Terragni, a never built project in Rome, in which the main theme is to recreate Dante’s Hell, Purgatory and Paradise with three different rooms, each one with a different composition. The idea is to have a park where visitors can find tranquility and relax, but at the same time where they can lose themselves into the nature. In addition to the park I also designed a hotel for visitors who want to spend more time in the park so to dive even deeper in this beautiful context.

Thanks to Francis Kéré’s atelier, I had the opportunity to compare myself with an entirely new architecture, materials and culture. The project is a cultural center which aims to keep alive the ancient cultures of Malian manpower, such as textile production, ceramics and the production of musical instruments. The main theme is the community, in fact the goal is to share these three different experiences in the central square. This cultural center is designed to accommodate those who want to immerse themselves in ancient African traditions even for several days: this is why a dormitory is also designed, detached from the complex of four buildings composed by three ateliers and by the refectory. The dorms feature a ceiling curtain system with the function of controlling room ventilation.

Thanks to Francis Kéré’s atelier, I learn better how to work in a more practical and constructive way. We were given the opportunity to build the pavilion that would then be exhibited at the Biennale of Architecture in Venice in 2018 into the Arsenale. It was a useful experience as it taught the whole atelier to work well and in an organized way, dividing works and at the same time helping in the most important moments. Personally, I worked on assembling the wooden chairs and designing a way to make the curtain work, so that the visitor himself could raise and lower it. I also had the opportunity to think and then shoot the pavilion presentation video.

MASTER 1

With Giacomo Guidotti atelier I was able to deepen the theme of reuse and at the same time of housing. The mapping is located a few meters from the Bellinzona railway station and is currently occupied by the factories. Since in the reorganization plan of this area it was decided to move the factories to another site, I was asked to redesign the plan, trying to understand if it was possible to maintain part of the existing structure. The intention is to keep the main factory as it has some interesting spatial features. The presence of sheds, which produces lighting particularly suited for practical work, has allowed me to develop within this structure an environment whose main theme is the workshop. So I introduce prefabricated metal elements that develop in height and do not touch the pre-existing structure. The housing was born as a consequence of the large space that the factories occupied, from the structure of the latter and from the potential that this site proposed. As well as the new factory’s prefabricated elements, the housing’s apartments are developed in height, creating triplexes. The ground floor of the housing is destined to a more public and commercial setting.

The theme of the semester with Miller’s atelier was “il condominio”. In this case it is a residential building with a particular characteristic as it is located in the heart of a public park adjacent to the Villa Ada park in the Parioli district of Rome. The strong relationship with nature and with its public dimension in correspondence with the private dimension of the building led to the union of these two aspects. Taking as inspiration the works of Heinrich Tessenow, the concrete building was created with the aim of completing the public path of the park, in fact the ground floor is completely free and open so that it’s itself the path, characterized only by the pillars and by the vertical distribution which define the pedestrian path and at the same time interact with the trees of the landscape, creating a filter for the building and a pergola. The height of the building does not exceed that of maritime pines, typical of Rome, so as to recreate in the apartments a feeling of complete immersion in nature.

Exercise at the beginning of the semester

Try to imagine a dining room in Rome 49

The exercise proposed by Professor Carlo Nozza consisted in studying the Mobel Haller, USM, and trying to design a structure that recalled Haller’s principles in a flexible and incremental architectural system. The intention is to design a sustainable structure, easy to dismantle and usable in an emergency, for example after natural disasters. The system is composed of nodes and elements that mediate between them and that allow the realization of a spatial structure. This structure allows the use of standard square profiles which makes it quick to find locally and sustainable for transport. The aspect of sustainability is fundamental in this case and it is given by the fact that the material and the labor are local that everything can be reusable and adaptable

It is a project that involved 120 students from Mendrisio, ETH, EPFL who joined on Mount Luzzone, at an altitude of 2150 meters. The workshop consists of the reconstruction of the ruins of the Luzzone alpe. The distinction between recomposition and reconstruction is substantial, in fact the intention was not to reconstruct a building, trying to give it a new function, instead the operation consisted in bringing back the stones that collapsed outside the farmhouse inside it, within the perimeter walls. The goal is to preserve the rural heritage, trying to write the ending, and then to put a point to the secular history of this peasant civilization. This workshop lasted two days, and it was also a training experience where the only comfort that we students had was a tent and clean water.

MASTER 2

We are in Venice, to be precise at the Lido. North of this wonderful landscape you can find the remains of an Austrian fortress that was built in 1850. The Ridotto, as it is called, is characterized by a protective wall over 6 meters high, which was guarded by four caponiers, one on each side, which later became three following the restructuring of the adjacent airport. Nowadays, the fortress is in a state of total abandonment and decay, where nature has taken over. The intention is to evoke in the citizens of Venice or in those who visit this city the interest in these incredible structures that are scattered throughout the lagoon area. The proposal consists of a museum inside a public park. Inside the museum, where models of the Austrian fortresses of the Venetian areas are exhibited, you can come across cramped and narrow areas or in double-height spaces. in fact, due to its current state, most of the floors on the first floor have collapsed, revealing the fortress in all its potential.

The strategic position of the Ex - Albarelli area reveals great potential, as it is easily reachable both from the town centre and from the Spina Verde park behind it. A fundamental element is the presence of the railway and the Chiasso station a few meters from the complex, as they give it an international character being exactly on the border between Italy and Switzerland. The proposal is therefore an art campus that can reactivate not only the district of Ponte Chiasso but also the context that surrounds it and that can entice also distant people to reach a place that has been forgotten for many years. The first approach was to make the industrial area more visible through the expedient of the visual goal. As a consequence of this thought all the entrances have been redeveloped and made more welcoming. The project site is fragmented into two levels on different heights. The first, the lower one, is occupied by abandoned sheds, while the second, just above, looks like a large terrace overlooking the neighborhood. The intention is to change the strongly horizontal character of the site by connecting the two levels through the introduction of a new structure that integrates with the existing one and that at the same time rises creating a new front that overlooks both the city and the Pina Verde park. On the upper level, as an intermediary between the building and the park, there is a domesticated park bordered by a porticato that connects the entire system and offers different experiences. In fact, walking under this light structure you can come across a secret garden, a belvedere, and you can reach the external ateliers suitable for students but also for private individuals who need a suggestive and engaging workplace to develop their work.
