Namaste. words | Dr. Karen Prentice D.O. F.A.A.P. Namaste. This beautiful word ends and sometimes starts yoga practice. From India, the birth nation of yoga, it literally translates to “I bow to you” and is used as a respectful greeting. In the case of yoga class, it is used as a way the instructor shows gratitude to the class and in turn, the class shows gratitude to the instructor. “The good/light in me bows to/honors the light in you” is another translation for the term. When I first started yoga years ago, this translation bothered me. I worried that the “religion” or spirituality of yoga conflicted with my Christian beliefs. However, as I looked around my yoga class, I soon found that yoga transcends and encompasses all faiths, spiritual beliefs, cultures, races, ages, genders, and abilities, and that each person’s “yoga practice” is unique to them. Yoga builds not only strength of muscle but also strength of spirit, as well as harmony and peace of mind and body.

So why should you consider doing yoga? A review of studies done by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found yoga to be helpful in the following areas: losing weight, improving sleep issues, aiding with smoking cessation, improving symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improving overall wellbeing. Harvard Health Publishing reported yoga to be helpful with stress, eating disorders, and promoting positive body image and self-esteem. Multiple studies have shown that yoga provides natural anxiety relief by decreasing our overall cortisol level (the stress hormone), thus improving our stress response. Yoga also helps reduce blood sugar in those with noninsulin dependent diabetes, helps with chronic pain, and lowers blood pressure. A study of 287 college students published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine found that after 15 weeks of yoga, the students’ vital capacities (the measure of maximum amount of air expelled from lungs) were improved. Many other studies have found that yoga helps with chronic lung diseases such as emphysema and asthma.

I was quite intimidated when I went to take my first yoga class, but was hoping to gain core strength and improve my athletic performance. The first day was a little overwhelming, but I found the instructors welcoming and accommodating to both the new yogis and to the experts in the class, giving us multiple ways to make the same poses easier or more challenging.

You can see why 31 million Americans are practicing or have practiced yoga! However, we all can think of a million excuses not to try it: “I won’t be any good at it” Practicing yoga is just that – it’s not about doing the splits or being immediately great at it – it’s about practicing and working on it, working your muscles and mind. It’s your practice and no one else’s and there is no room for judgement from you or anyone else. I’ve been to many different yoga classes at different locations and have never felt judged or critiqued. “It’s too expensive” It can be expensive, that is true, but you can find yoga classes at various churches, community colleges, and community centers sometimes for free and sometimes as low as 10 dollars per class. You can also find free online yoga classes. “I’m not athletic” You don’t need to be athletic or good at sports. You just need a mat and courage. Courage to try something that you may not be good at but that I guarantee you, every time you go and practice you will get better and better. There is no competition, just transformation of you into a stronger, more flexible and more centered you.

I want to leave you with an inspiring story that happened just last week in my yoga class. I was in “down dog pose”, a common position where you are literally on all fours with your booty in the air and legs and arms straight. The instructor said, “Either stay here in down dog or if you like do Camatkarasana or Wild Thing Pose.” I looked at the lady beside me to see what in the world to do, and she quickly flipped her right leg and right arm up in the air and flipped over now facing the ceiling. I stayed in down dog. At the end of class I congratulated her on the difficult move. She said thanks and went on to tell me that yoga had saved her health by helping her lose 100 pounds. This woman was not only older than me but an absolute Rockstar when it came to yoga. “Yoga is not about touching your toes, it is what you learn on the way down” Jigar Gor. Some days I don’t feel like going to yoga. I don’t feel like putting on my tights and driving to class, but every time I go, I come home stronger, more centered, and more at peace. CRAN-MERRIES We’ve gathered a few of our wintery favorite recipes for you to try and share! Cranberry-Jalapeño Salsa 1. Finely chop 2 cups cranberries with ¼ cup sugar in a food processor 2. Toss with ⅓ cup chopped cucumber, ⅓ cup cilantro, ¼ cup chopped white onion, 1 minced jalapeño, 1 tablespoon lime juice and ½ teaspoon kosher salt Cranberry Scones 1. Combine 2 cups flour, ½ cup sugar, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 2 teaspoons poppy seeds and a pinch of salt in a bowl 2. Cut in 1 stick diced cold butter 3. Add 1 beaten egg and ¼ cup milk, then ¾ cup cranberries 4. Shape into a ½” thick disk on a baking sheet, then score into 8 wedges 5. Brush with milk and sprinkle with coarse sugar 6. Bake at 375°F for about 25 minutes or until golden Mulled Cranberry Cider 1. Simmer 4 cups cranberry juice cocktail, 1 cup cranberries, ¼ cup brown sugar, the zest of 1 orange (in wide strips), 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 cloves and 2 cardamom pods over medium heat for about 20 minutes Cranberry Tea Sandwiches 1. Pulse 8 ounces goat cheese, ¼ cup crème fraîche and 2 tablespoons chopped chives in a food processor 2. Halve a baguette lengthwise and hollow it out 3. Spread the cheese mixture on one half and top with baby arugula; Spread 1 cup cranberry jelly on the other half 4. Sandwich the halves, wrap tightly in plastic, and chill (slice ½” inch thick to serve)

Mortgage Myths from a Mortgage Broker

words | Brian D Yampolsky While I am sure you’ll be surprised to learn this, I am not a professional writer. You may find some incorrect spelling, the occasional misuse of grammar, even a stray bit of punctuation from time to time. However, I am a professional mortgage broker with 26 years of experience in an industry full of complexity and confusion (after all, we are dealing with banks here). So I feel confident as I write this, sharing for your benefit the three most common mortgage myths associated with buying your first home:

If you can qualify for the home you want now, it might be smarter to buy it now before other variables make it more expensive later, such as rising interest rates, appreciating property values, or shifting market conditions (from a buyers’ market to a sellers’ market). “I’ll just get a mortgage from my bank – that’s where I do my banking, so we have a relationship” – Unless your girlfriend works at the bank, you do not have a relationship with your bank. Getting your mortgage from your bank is like eating dinner at the airport...your options are limited, you will pay more than necessary, and the quality of your experience will suffer. Banks know that they have brand familiarity with their depositors and for that reason, many people will think to call their bank when they need a mortgage. A mortgage broker may be a better option because a broker can shop the wholesale mortgage market for a variety of loan programs (options), can find lower rates and fees, and a broker specializes only in mortgages and therefore has a level of expertise that you won’t find at a bank.

“I need to save more money for my 20% down payment” – There was a time when saving for a down payment was a major undertaking, but today the requirements are very user-friendly. You do not need to put 20% down to buy a home. FHA loans require 3.50% down, conventional loans require 3% to 5% down and, if you are eligible, VA loans require 0% down payment. The sources for your down payment money can come from various places you can use a tax refund, sell an asset (like a car or bike), borrow from your retirement account, receive a gift from a family member, or even just plain old-fashioned saving your own money. “I want to pay off some of my credit cards before I buy” – It’s always a great idea to pay off debt, but it doesn’t always have to be done before you buy a home. Oftentimes I will be talking with a client who wants to buy a home, but thinks they have to pay off their credit cards or other debts beforehand. Talk to a professional

So there you have it – not all the answers in the world, but a few tips for you if you’re thinking of buying your first home. There is a lot more to it, so do yourself a favor and start the process by getting pre-qualified by a professional mortgage broker (like me!). There is no cost, no obligation, and it will give you a clear picture of how much money you should budget for before you buy.

There’s no one quite like Andrew Matarazzo. If you were to look him up online, you could lose yourself in his dreaminess...No, that’s not a Crest Whitestrips ad nor a glimpse into Heaven, you’ve probably just stumbled upon his Instagram. Curious as to why we’re so inexplicably captivated? Andrew’s infectious charisma and down-to-Earth personality just draws you in. And in a refreshing deviation from what you’re used to seeing in headlines, this young actor is confident, unpretentious, and hardworking as his stardom continues to rise.

Teen Wolf may be the actor’s most notable role to date and it has led Andrew on quite a few fun adventures, like the press tour he went on this past summer, “It was the best month of my life. I spent 28 days in Europe attending four different conventions. I’d never done anything like that before. Seeing the fans’ enthusiasm and love in person versus online is so different. It’s great to be able to have a moment face-to-face. And to be there with my friends and cast was a blast. Not only that, but I saw many places in Europe I hadn’t been to before; and the ones I had been to, I saw with totally different eyes. It was a very special time in my life.” Andrew, an avid museum-goer, made sure to make the most of his European adventure - traveling allowed the star the opportunity to indulge his eye for art and history, “Pretty much every city I travel to, I immediately look up what museums are in the area. Amsterdam had some of the best museums I have ever seen. I loved the Egyptian Museum in Turin, Italy. And recently I went to the Heavenly Bodies [exhibit] at The Met in New York. It was insanely well done and beautiful.” A thirst for culture is something that was instilled in Andrew at a young age, no doubt from his artistically-inclined mother.

Andrew acted for fun as a young boy, until his early teen years during which he developed a burning desire to do more with his hobby, “I was about 13 when I watched River Phoenix in Stand By Me and it shifted my acting from just a drama class in school to me taking it more seriously. I started auditioning for productions outside of school and applied to some study abroad programs later on. It shifted from fun to passion.” Today, you may recognize Andrew as Gabe from Teen Wolf, Flaco from Jane The Virgin, or from one of his many other appearances on some of TV’s most notable shows. From acting classes to screens across the globe, Andrew tells us a bit about filming these breakout roles: “Gabe in Teen Wolf was the most fun only because it was so opposite of me in real life. I had a great time figuring him out and experimenting with him over a long period of time. The best time I had on

If you follow the actor on social media, you know that he and his mom are close, “She’s a true artist. I’m so lucky she integrated art and travel when I was growing up because it did really influence me as a person. My eye, my sensitivity, my overall interests, all came from her. I had many friends who did not have supportive parents growing up and she really was such a supportive parent, always trusting I knew what I was doing and never saying ‘no’ when I wanted to try things. It gave me confidence and was a big key to me going full force for my dreams.” Another facet of how cultured the star is, he’s actually trilingual - fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. He tells us of his trilingual abilities, “It has opened a lot of doors for me. It’s a great time for ethnic and multilingual actors. I also love being able to talk with people when I travel.”

Andrew, each more interesting than the last. For example, he has a cross tattoo that isn’t religious and his guilty pleasure is actually healthy. The star explains these juxtapositions in his own words, “I have a cross on my knuckles but its not a religious tattoo. I got it in homage to one of my favorite films and series of all time, This is England. It really inspired me at the only time I ever thought about switching career paths, and was the catalyst for me wanting to keep pursuing [acting]. The characters in the film all have a small cross tattoo.” We love that Andrew has applied such a unique and personal meaning to arguably one of the world’s most wellknown symbols. And about his healthy guilty pleasure: “There’s this all-natural grocery store called Erewhon and it has a hot food bar and juice spot inside. It’s so insanely expensive but I’ve become annoyingly into it and it’s for sure a guilty pleasure. I’m finding it has a cult following as I go more often. I may join full-time.”

As if the star wasn’t talented enough, he’s also got quite the set of windpipes on him. Every once in a while, Andrew will gift fans and followers with a musical cover, “My covers are few and far-between because I need a song to hit me in a certain way for me to decide to sing it. There’s just something about a track that makes me feel that way, and I know I need to tackle it. I don’t like to sing for the sake of singing. It needs to be something I want to say. I’m really influenced by Amy Winehouse, Billy Joel, Adele, SZA, Khalid, and Rihanna - all artists that have something in their interpretation of music and lyrics that really inspire me.” Aside from these covers, Andrew gives us more hope for his musical future: “I haven’t tackled writing music yet, but I do write a lot in other forms. I know I need to start trying some lyrics, but I’m still honing my musicality. It’ll happen though.” Great things take time, and we’re willing to give Andrew all the time he needs.

The actor’s continuously-expanding following is in large part due to the Teen Wolf franchise, “I took away some great friends after the show ended and I really love the fandom. There’s not many shows that have a dedicated fan base around the world. It’s been really cool to see all these people with Teen Wolf as the common thread that brought them together.” No doubt a fandom as widespread and passionate as this one would lead to a crazy encounter or two, “I’d say the craziest was in Paris when a few fans found the hotel I was staying in and by the third day there was an ocean of fans waiting all day and night. I couldn’t believe how long they would wait and that it meant that much to them!” In the wake of such intense and flourishing stardom, Andrew remains humble and steadfast. Of the future of his career, he says, “I’m feeling good about the direction I’m heading in. I just want to keep being challenged and reach the point where I can choose projects I’m passionate about. There’s a long list of people I can’t wait to work with.” With unique perspectives, authentic passions, and clear potential, we’re excited to see where this young actor’s career is bound to go.

Cody Christian words | Daniel Larsen It was a brisk, overcast morning when Cody Christian met our team for his Luca Magazine feature. The rooftop of a charming Los Angeles apartment building - rumored to have once been home to Judy Garland would serve as the set. Cody arrived calm, cool and collected. His voice is booming, yet calming and his manners were impeccable. Not only is the star charming and polite, but he knows how to work the camera. As soon as the shoot began, it was obvious that capturing great shots of Cody was going to be a breeze.

You may know Cody Christian from his roles in shows like Pretty Little Liars, Teen Wolf, or as Asher in the most recent series he’s starred in: All American. Cody tells us of these and all his other roles, “Every role thus far in my career has been extremely special to me in its own way. Each role has been a milestone in my own development and has inspired me to keep moving forward just as intensely after so many years.” Cody’s role in Assassination Nation, which came out this fall, is one such milestone, “I had just season-wrapped on Teen Wolf for good and a few days afterwards, I found myself in Louisiana with a brand new group of people reading through the script. The process was both exciting and thrilling and such a huge step forward to me in my career. Being a part of this film, alongside our cast and producers, reminded me that I was on the right path in regards to my own journey. It gave me the confidence moving forward that I was prepared to handle bigger projects.”

and when implemented, I believe it to be the gateway to the life you truly wish to live.” Cody’s success is truly an ode to what we can achieve by embracing the power of our own minds. This same mentality is no doubt what allowed Cody to tackle the dynamic role of Nick Newell in his upcoming film, Notorious Nick - the story of a one-armed MMA fighter. Cody says, “It’s a very powerful story of what you’re able to accomplish when you’re willing to fight for your dreams. I hope viewers take away the inspiration woven into our story.” The star’s personal mantra, “It’s possible”, seems to be alive and well in his evergrowing career. The actor’s had the privilege of working alongside some of the biggest names in show business. This has undoubtedly provided a plethora of learning experiences for the young actor. Cody tells us of one that comes to mind: “Christopher Walken on the set of Kill The Irishman. Never had any direct scenes with him, but crossed paths multiple times on set. One day while filming in Detroit, and being delayed for many hours, he gave me the most memorable advice that still carry with me to this day. When I asked why he wasn’t agitated like some of the other actors due to the delay, he told me, ‘I do the acting for free and they pay me to wait.’ Something I’ll never forget.”

For Cody, staying on track and nailing role after role was made possible by his own persistence and dedication to achieving his goals: “There was no set path I followed. There were so many ups and downs. Consistency and this unwavering tenacity to pursue something I believed in are really what stick out to me. Never willing to give up on this, no matter how difficult it became or what obstacles were thrown my way. I accepted the fact that I was willing to invest as much time and effort as necessary to bring this dream to fruition, and to this day, I still am, and I’m still more than willing. I’m a firm believer in achieving anything you decide to achieve. The mind is a very powerful tool,

Another reason we’re obsessed with Cody Christian is the star’s impeccable style. Changing from look to look on set, we saw that he can rock just about anything. How does someone that looks so good in so many things define his own personal style? Cody eloquently explains, “I dress simple. One

thing as a man, we don’t have to go big” lifting his arms to punctuate his point - “I like to wear things that accentuate me and are timeless and sleek.” In a fashion world that can sometimes be overstimulating, there’s a lot to be appreciated in someone who utilizes fashion simply to accentuate themselves.

pressures with anything you do in life. I think the most important aspect of balancing the pressures is simply recognizing what they are. Being aware of what comes with the job description. That, and keeping good people around you is essential to surviving Hollywood.” Successfully navigating his way around such a dynamic job is what allows young stars like Cody to get where they want to be and reap the benefits of stardom. On the perks of being an actor, Cody says, “There’s far too many to list. The biggest and best perk is that I never feel like I’m working. I’m doing what I want to be doing and I couldn’t be more grateful for that.”

So what is a day in the life of this Hollywood heartthrob? Cody shares, “It’s not as exciting as most people think. There’s a lot to fit into the day, especially when we’re filming. As of right now, my schedule consists of waking up pretty early, training, filming. It sounds much more boring than it is when I type it out, but I couldn’t be happier right now!” Speaking of training, we wanted to know how Cody maintains his physique: “Consistency and prioritizing the time is how I stay in shape. As far as my favorite type of workout, anything that involves movement. My training style has switched up dramatically since playing a football on screen, and I have to say, I’m loving it and feeling better than ever.” Not only does Cody enjoy playing football on the set of All American, but he enjoys his costars and the time he spends with them off the field, “I can assure you it doesn’t feel like a season 1 show. There’s a chemistry amongst cast and crew that could easily fool anyone into thinking we have been together for years. Also, there’s a very strong presence of comfortability and trust, and in my opinion, those two are so imperative for everyone to work cohesively and feel safe enough to bring out their best.” This great sense of community among the cast is bound to be a huge factor in the chemistry we see on screen.

Get used to seeing Cody Christian in theaters or on your favorite shows. The actor’s got huge aspirations and the momentum and drive to get there. But where is there? We’ll find out along with Cody, “I’m always asked this question, and yet I still don’t have a solid go-to answer. Possibly because every new day on set or every different project inspires me and pushes my boundaries, challenges my imagination, and allows to dream big in regard to what I wish to play as an actor. I can list you a few roles off the top of my head; a military operative, a man locked away in solitary confinement, a rapper, a dark superhero. I keep a list, in order to eventually speak it all into existence. To answer this question honestly and briefly, I just want to tell good stories. I want to play characters that force me to grow and challenge my perspective, that intimidate me in my prep, and force me to ask the question, ‘Can I do this?’.” A question to which Cody Christian will always answer, “Yes I can”, We’re on the edge of our seats waiting to see those “yeses” manifested on screen in Cody’s upcoming film Notorious Nick, and in all of his amazing roles to come.

Projects like this allow Cody to embrace his talent and further pursue his career, no matter what the industry throws his way. The star spills on balancing his crazy career, “There’s

Riley Smith words | Daniel Larsen Riley Smith is perhaps the epitome of the American dream - a small-town boy with hopes and dreams who made it big in The City of Angels. A long way from his family’s horse ranch in Iowa, the multifaceted star has appeared in a variety of shows and movies alongside some of Hollywood’s finest. Over the years, he has starred in movies including Not Another Teen Movie, Radio, and the Disney Channel Original Motocrossed, and TV shows including 24 and 90210. More recently, you might have recognized him on shows including Nashville, Frequency, or as Dr. Will Grant in the hit series Life Sentence. Some of you may also be fans of Riley’s music!

Having accomplished so much throughout his career and with so much to come from Riley Smith in the near future, Luca Magazine was lucky to get a chance to talk to the star and get to know more about him:

The icing on the cake was getting to film in Nashville – it made the world seem so authentic and personally, opened up a lot of doors for me professionally. What roles have most impacted you as an actor? Frequency [the TV series] will always be special to me. I felt like I became [the character] Frank. He will always be a part of me.

Can you tell us about your upbringing and how you got to where you are today? I grew up on a horse ranch in Iowa. I have an amazing, loving, and supportive family. I always attribute who I am and how I got to where I am to my family. We are close and they’ve always been my backbone.

You’ve worked alongside some of acting’s biggest names, what are some things you’ve learned from doing so? I’ve been fortunate to get hands-on learning experience by working with so many talented people. Actors and directors. And I take a little something from every experience. Over twenty years of doing so has molded me into the actor I am now. But what I love about my job is that I’m constantly learning and growing.

How do you keep your midwestern roots alive while living in LA? By keeping my values in order; Remembering what’s really important. And again, having a solid core of people around me that won’t let me get too far off-course. What drew you to want to be a part of the TV show Proven Innocent? It was the first script that I read last pilot season, and I knew as soon as I finished that it was the only show I wanted. I love the writing, and the concept - it’s so fresh and topical.

What advice do you have for someone navigating the highs and lows of an early acting career? Don’t let the highs get too high and don’t let the lows get too low. Be in the business for the right reasons, and just enjoy the journey because it’s not about the destination.

Can you tell us about your role as Levi Scott in Proven Innocent? Being accused of a crime I didn’t commit is literally my biggest fear, so getting to play a guy who spent 10 years in jail for a crime he didn’t commit really stood out to me as a unique opportunity. Unraveling the layers of a guy who had his life taken away from him, and getting to try to put the pieces back together has been an actor’s dream. He’s a complicated guy. And I love that about him. I love playing that.

Any chance we’ll see you rock your Motorcrossed gear ever again? Haha. I’ve still got it. You know I keep threatening to pull it out one year for Halloween. It might need to happen for a good laugh someday. What’s been your craziest fan encounter? Back in the Not Another Teen Movie days I had some crazy encounters. A girl fainted in front of me once. I’ll never forget that. I still feel bad. :)

Can you elaborate on why your role as Markus Keen on Nashville has been one of your favorite roles to date? Well, Marcus was a complicated guy. He masked it with insecurities and attitude, but really he just wanted love and acceptance like everyone else. He was misunderstood. I love playing a misunderstood person. I like trying to find the empathy and understanding to them. On top of the character, just the opportunity to combine my two passions acting and music - made it my dream role.

Proven Innocent, Life Sentence, Radio you’ve done a lot of work in shows and movies that have such strong messages. What are some principles you live by that you think more people should? The world’s in a crazy place right now. I just hope that we can all love more and judge less.

Where do you get inspiration for your music? Everywhere. I draw from my own personal experiences a lot; Past and present. And I do a lot of observing. Relationships and people fascinate me. There’s a story in everything if you peel back the layers and get to the heart of the matter.

What can we expect to see from you in the near future? Proven Innocent comes out February 15th on Fox, and I have a new music project releasing in December. Instead of releasing a typical album with 8-10 songs on it, I’ve decided to release one song a month, along with a video. I have the next 8 months of material done and ready to go. I’m actually in Nashville now doing touch ups on vocals for the final mixes. I’m really excited to put the music out. I’ve been working on it for a year, and it’s finally all about to roll out.

How would you describe your music style? I get asked that a lot and still have no answer - it’s constantly changing because I am influenced by so many types of music. I didn’t do a traditional record deal, so I don’t have to follow the same rules. I just write what I’m feeling and however that translates is the style of music that particular song ends up being. Right now I’ve got a very jazzy, JohnMayer-influenced thing going. I’m really diggin’ the vibe.

What’s one of your favorite songs that you’ve written and why? Every song is like a child to me, it’s hard to pick a favorite. Each one has something about it that’s special to me; That’s why I made them. That being said, I’ve always felt very connected to the lyrics to a song called “Selfish”. It’s not universally relatable, but it has a very deep meaning to me. It was a clear moment of selfawareness, and I wrote about it. Can you tell us about your European tours? Every year, my two best friends and I go on a Euro tour and it’s as much just a chance to travel with my brothers. Some shows we play for a thousand people, the next night it may be 50 - it doesn’t even matter, it’s just amazing getting to do what we love and having the opportunity to do it while creating memories traveling around the world. What’s some of the best advice you’ve ever received? Work hard and be kind. It’s simple yet effective.

Jennifer Cheon words | Daniel Larsen With immense confidence, a stellar sense of humor, and a badass aura, there’s something about Jen Cheon that makes you want to know more. She’s nailed roles on shows like Arrow, Minority Report, The 100, The Drive, and dozens more. Most recently, you can see her as Ivory on Van Helsing, “I play a blood hungry, fed up, witchy, vampire. All of that drew me to the role, and I have always been a fan of vampires, witches, and action sequences. Getting the opportunity to do that through a character like Ivory has been pretty great!” Aside from playing TV’s most interesting vampire, Jen’s busy breaking the mold, redefining what it means to be an actress in Hollywood.

I didn’t say I was particularly good at any of those things - I just said I did them. Even if you go to a local paint pottery place, grab a bowl, and paint it any colour. It will heal you.” Having grown up with two siblings that are now criminal defense lawyers, this creative spirit has always been one to forge her own path, “Academics were never really my thing particularly because school wasn’t a fun, positive place for me. Being creative was what helped me through my loneliness during my school years. From the age of three through my high school years, I would drive straight to dance every day. Performing arts was what I always wanted to be a part of. We knew at a very early age that I would never become a ballerina because of my height & body type, which broke my heart, but it introduced me to more theater and stage dance, and that grew into acting.”

If you know anything about Jen Cheon, you know that she’s unapologetically herself. An endearing quality, and fitting for an actress at a time when the film industry is embracing unique, bold, and vocal women. Her ability to express herself so well may stem from coping with bullies as a child, where the star was able to harness the negativity of bullying to create something exceptional: “Art. Art. Art. Well a perfect day for the star is this: “Wake up to my husband making breakfast (you said perfect day). Hike with my dog, go to yoga, Mauy Thai, grocery shop for some dinner, then work on a character, music, or something creative. Then I’d go riding with my Dad and nephew, make dinner, hang with Jesse (my hubby), and fall asleep easily, which never seems to be something I’m always able to do. I’m a night owl that loves crisp, quiet mornings. Kind of contradicting, but yep, that’s me!” How adorable that her husband, director Jesse Warn, was counted in her perfect day twice?! The two recently eloped and are giving us all the feels! Jen elaborates, “The little white chapel in Vegas is the best place to get married. It was just him and I that day with Jimmy, who officiated the wedding. He is someone we will never forget. We didn’t know what to expect, and Jimmy was so sweet and kind. Thanks Jimmy!”

Jen’s future is looking to turn out just as amazing as her present, and as constructive as her past. Her goals and aspirations are big, but they’re nothing this talent can’t tackle, “If I could name one classic role I would want to play, it would hands down be Catwoman. I think she could embody all the things I would want from a ‘dream’ character: physically diverse. Seeing a mixed-race, tall woman in a leading role like that would be so unreal. I know it would be tough shoes to fill, but I’m up for the challenge! I think the audience would dig my portrayal of her, and the ‘Selina Kyle’ aspect of her as well.” Beyond her dream role, Jen has big aspirations to expand what it means to be a woman in Hollywood even further, “I hope to get behind the camera more by writing, creating concepts for shows, as well as directing.” With her admirable confidence, dynamic personality, and obvious talent, there’s nothing Jennifer Cheon can’t accomplish. In the near future you can catch Jen as our favorite Van Helsing vampire as season three of the show unfolds: “Without giving you guys too much info, I’ll just say, you get to see more of her. We are getting to know a pretty dynamic vampire through Ivory’s eyes in a way we haven’t seen a vampire yet.” If a season four comes to light, it will no doubt be due to the fans. Jen weighs in on the idea, “Oh, I am praying to all the Gods that it happens! With everyone’s support I think we will! A big thank you to everyone for watching and for all the amazing art we receive. The star carries with her an intense work ethic, a fiery passion for her craft, and a heart of gold. To better understand the essence of Brenna, she shared with us her journey from an ordinary Chicago suburb to your TV screen: “I started participating in a local musical theater program when I was 8-years-old and I immediately fell in love with performing. I continued to do musical theater for about four years. I went to LA for the first time in March of 2014 to try a few auditions in person and ended up booking the role of Jane in Descendants, so it was an exciting first trip to LA for me!” Having had her big break only just four years ago, Brenna’s career is promising to say the least.

Amanda Steele words | Daniel Larsen “Words to describe my style are edgy, chic, androgynous, and glam.” says beauty blogger and influencer Amanda Steele. When we hear her name, we think of those, plus a few more, like beauty, YouTube, and fashion. Talking to Amanda, those words evolve a bit, becoming passion, community, and enthusiasm. Amanda’s charisma is contagious, and her ability to transmit her passion through a screen to her viewers has allowed the star to build a bustling career.

Amanda’s career started at a young age and didn’t blossom into what it is today overnight. In her own words, “I started making YouTube videos at age 10. For as long as I could remember, I have always wanted to be a fashion designer. I ended up spending lots of time on YouTube researching things like ‘How to Sew’ and fell in love with beauty and fashion videos from there. I was never a very outgoing or social person, so finding comfort and acceptance in the YouTube community is what really let me throw myself into my passions. As time went on and I continued to post, I realized viewers were recognizing me as one of the only ‘beauty gurus’ who was actually their age and lived a similar life to theirs.” Finding and indulging this niche market of viewers was key to Amanda’s success. Her reach would soon span larger demographics across multiple platforms, “I have always been ambitious and continuing to use my platform to indulge in my passion was something I was never going to stop. It took years of rejection from brands who didn’t understand me or my influence to now be here, working with some of the biggest beauty brands on the market! YouTube was the start of my public self expression, and I have just continued to do that in even bigger ways outside of the single platform. I never let anyone

I am at the place I am now because I believed in myself and had a manager who believed in me from the beginning.” Aside from pushing herself to success and help from her manager, another huge force driving Amanda forward is her amazing fans. Amanda adds, “I always go to my followers to hear what it is they want to see from me. I also get inspiration from fashion magazines’ video content. I like to find a balance between the sort of untouchable ‘Vogue’ lifestyle video and your typical YouTube vlog. I like to be able to translate and share my love for glamour and luxury to my audience in a nonintimidating or unrealistic way.” Her approach to flawlessly delivering high end, luxury content in an approachable way has met the needs of an entire viewership that had never been addressed before. The intense loyalty of Amanda’s viewers isn’t lost on her, “I have been doing this job for almost 10 years and it is so much different now. Being authentic was what made people

She breaks down that week even further for us, “The highlight of this NYFW was my partnership with YSL beauty! I got to be their ‘Instagram Creative Director’ for their NYFW event. The party was so much fun, I got to wear a major YSL look, and got to interview some awesome people like Zoe Kravitz and Sheck Wes. Their team is so chic and friendly. Establishing and maintaining balance between privacy and sharing with her fans is one of the aspects many influencers still grapple with. “I try to balance sharing my life and retaining privacy by living in the moment. I am not someone who will even touch my phone if I am having an amazing time. Being able to live moments separate from my online presence gives me a clear head on what I think I my viewers would like to hear and see. A little farther down the road, Amanda says, “I hope to see myself acting in my dream roles and being a successful fashion designer.” Acting is a goal she’s already begun to pursue - you can hear Amanda in the animated motion picture The Adventures of Bunny Bravo, a project she’s not likely soon to forget. “It was such a cool experience being in the booth, recording a character’s voice. At the time, I had never done anything like this, so I was so shy and nervous. It took a few times for me to really get comfortable and start acting like an animation. It was a super cool look into what goes on behind the scenes and how long it actually takes!” This role is a great first step towards her ultimate goal as an actress, “Success as an actress for me would just be the honor of playing a part of a story that can change someone’s life. If I get to be a part of a movie or TV show that positively affects a viewer, that is success.”

As Amanda’s career continues to grow, it’s necessary for her to be in more places doing more things. Much of her work is done between Los Angeles and New York - something she’s not only coped with, but has embraced, “The pace is the biggest difference between the two cities. In LA, everyone is relaxed. It is almost like no one has a worry or place to be. In NY, everything moves so fast it sometimes feels like I can’t breathe. I appreciate Southern California’s ability to enjoy the present and I respect the way New York City feels like there’s always something to be accomplished. They are opposites really, so having a large influence from both coasts balances me out as a person.” Being able to thrive in two different, but both necessary, places for Amanda’s industry means the star will be able to accomplish so much more. With her ability to connect with viewers on an extremely intimate level, her growing reputation in the fashion industry, and the wit to overcome any challenge, Amanda Steele is sure to accomplish all of her wildest dreams - likely in the not-too-distant future.

Micro Blading Brows words | Corinna Bertram-Cooke

How long does it last and does it require touch ups? Although it is considered permanent make up, microblading does fade over time and touch ups or color boosts are recommended every year to 18 months in order to keep the shape precise and the color fresh. Fading will vary on everyone depending on skin type, sun exposure, skin products, and treatments.

Did you know your eyebrows are the most important feature on your face? Nothing changes your look more drastically than a perfectly executed (or badly applied!) eyebrow. A brow that has been perfectly shaped can waken and lift your eye, open your face, make you look happy and refreshed, and of course is just madly chic! But who has time to master the perfect brow, every day? Wouldn’t it be great to just wake up each morning with brows to die for, without so much as picking up an eyebrow pencil? Here at Luca we are obsessed with perfect, microbladed brows (and the time they save us in the morning!), so we asked Scottsdale-based microblading expert, Kristin Marshall of KMM Brows, to answer the most common questions about the art of microblading:

What is the process? The appointment begins by prepping the skin and a “mapping session” to design the perfect brow, then a numbing cream is applied. A first pass or “skeleton” for the brow is then etched in using the microblading tool, followed by a second round of numbing before the second and third passes are completed. Detail strokes are added at that time and a color mask. The total appointment takes around two and a half hours, however only about 45 minutes of that is spent actually tattooing. A perfecting session is done six weeks from the initial appointment.

What is the difference between microblading and tattooing eyebrows? Instead of using a tattoo machine to draw on artificial brows, microblading uses a handheld blade that creates thin, crisp strokes to mimic hairs. It is designed to be a natural enhancement to define and add density to existing brows, creating perfect shape and balance. Microblading is performed by a licensed cosmetologist.

How do you choose the color and shape? I specifically map out each individuals brows based off their bone structure, eye placement, and facial features. Everyone’s brow shape is different. I try to stay within their natural hair growth for easier maintenance, however many people have brow hair that grows outside the desired area and will require normal grooming and waxing to help maintain a flattering, defined shape. Color is chosen to match the client’s eyebrow hairs for the most natural results. If the client wishes for darker, bolder brows, this will be done at the six-week perfecting session.

Who is microblading for? Microblading is best suited for healthy, dry/normal skin types. Oily skin, or aging/thin skin can often heal more “blurred”, in which case a combo brow is recommended. A combo brow is subtle shading combined with microblading hair strokes. Microblading can be done on someone with full brow hair to no hair at all. It does look most natural on clients who already have semi full brows since the strokes then blend seamlessly with their existing hair.

How long after microblading will my brows start to look good? There is a 10-day healing process during which you apply ointment to prevent any scabbing. By the 10th day, the color intensity will have softened to its perfect shade. Your brows will look great at this point, but you must come in for a second session at the six-week mark to have them perfected.

Do younger women get microblading or just older women? Any age group can get microblading! The younger gals love microblading because it defines the shape, adds density, and eliminates the need to spend 30 minutes perfecting their brow makeup each morning. For others, microblading recreates full, natural looking eyebrows that have maybe thinned due to aging, hormones, medication, or overplucking.

Each HoodLamb garment is created using one of our unique hemp fabric blends and combines age old traditions of hemp tailoring with a modern approach to style and fit.

OUR STORY In the early nineties, HoodLamb began as a simple wish: To feel warm, comfortable, and protected after an exhilarating day surfing the cold waves of the North Sea. We had the idea of creating a warm, durable jacket that looked great and was designed from natural fabrics. It took some time, experimentation, and innovation to get it right but we found hemp, the earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strongest natural fiber, and we have been using it in all of our apparel since.

SUSTAINABLE Hemp is one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics in the world, and has been used throughout the ages for many purposes including textile, rope, paper, and even automobile parts. One of the strongest natural fibers on the planet, it is also one of the most resource efficient. The farming of hemp adds nutrients to the soil, only requires half the amount of water cotton does, and needs no herbicides or other agricultural chemicals. Hemp is also the only CO2 negative textile fiber, meaning its growth actually reduces carbon emissions in the atmosphere.

Mukluks Mukluks are a soft hide boot created by Inuit and Yupik peoples for their function and warmth in cold northern climates. The name mukluk comes from the Yupik word maklak, meaning “bearded seal” which – along with Caribou – was what most Inuit clothing was made of in the region. Following the arrival of European fur traders, Aboriginal women found new and better ways of building and decorating mukluks – adding pom-poms, intricate beaded patterns, and tassels. With this, a more distinct and personalized mukluk design took off! These designs became so customized that it is possible to trace a decorated mukluk back to its original geographic home. One of the largest manufacturers of both traditional and modern mukluks is Manitobah Mukluks. In the last decade or so, celebrities photographed wearing their shoes have made the brand very popular. Manitobah, for its part, supports Aboriginal communities and their traditional arts across Canada. Currently, Mukluks are loved all over the world for function as well as fashion.
