6 someone to know

ALICIA YOON words Brittany Chetochine A keen business acumen combined with a longstanding love of skincare led Alicia Yoon to notice that, despite being hailed as the best in the world, South Korean beauty products were hard to come by in the US. So, in 2012, the Harvard MBA graduate and licensed esthetician made a bold move, quitting her consulting position and starting her own business. Thus, Peach & Lily was born; a company she built from the ground up in the hopes of making Korean beauty products more accessible to Americans. This busy CEO shared a little with us about her big career change and how she makes it all work today. STARTING SOMETHING NEW “When I was deciding to start my own company, I was most daunted by not knowing where to start. Everything is new, nothing is structured and building a business doesn’t come with a how-to manual. At the same time, in the midst of this, piecing things together the right way and seeing a business begin to get formed was truly rewarding. I often find that the very thing that I find daunting ends up being the most rewarding once overcome. It stretches and grows you and helps you become your best self.” Alicia

credits her success to having a good support system, “Emotional and mental health is important and having people around you who care and encourage you and believe in you goes a long way.” She also believes in working on things you care about – “Be sure that you’re really passionate about the idea. Be prepared to work extremely hard. Be scrappy, tenacious and resilient. Most of all, though, be sure to celebrate all the little victories and milestones along the way because it’s truly the journey that counts, and it helps to keep going rather than focusing on some end goal. Enjoy the process and the adventure!” A DAY AS CEO “There is no typical day as far as tasks go and I love that. Some days, I’m heads down on reviewing and managing finances, other days it’s lots of meetings with my team, providing feedback and helping to develop the team, and other days it’s testing formulas and developing products. I do keep a routine though. I like to wake up quite early, usually no later than six AM, and I spend a few hours in the morning alone in quiet getting my day going with meditation, breakfast and a couple

8 hours of uninterrupted work time. I do my most important work of the day in the mornings. I like to then go to the office and continue working until lunch time. During lunch, I do sign off and give myself a break. Then the afternoons are when I take meetings and calls. When I get home these days, I like to completely turn off, though I always stay connected in case my team in NY or Seoul needs me. Before bed, I always make a list of the most important things I have to do the next day and take stock of where the week is at. This way, the next morning, I can hit the ground running on what needs to get done. I wake up and know exactly what to do during those quiet, precious, early morning hours.” KEEPING ENERGIZED AND FOCUSED “On busy or difficult days, I will seek quiet and really get in the flow where I can be the most efficient and effective. I also will make sure that my environment is physically clean, that I’m seated comfortably, turn my phone on silent, have tea nearby, and create a space where I can get into that zone where all else is blocked out and you’re completely focused on the task at hand.” RELAX AND RECHARGE

photography Hye Ryoung Min

“Each day, in the evening before I go to sleep, I reserve at least an hour to totally disconnect. I don’t check my phone, I won’t go on my laptop, and I’ll spend the time watching TV, talking to my husband, reading a book or anything else that’s totally unrelated to work. During the work day, I sometimes take a brisk walk and grab a tea. I also take little moments throughout the day to reflect on the things about life that I count to be the most important and steadfastly true. This helps me gain perspective when tackling anything stressful and reminds me that ultimately it’s not the end-all be-all, which ironically provides a greater clarity, strength and focus to tackle the hard issues.”

9 PEACH & LILY PRODUCTS When asked for her favorites, Alicia says, “It’s hard to play favorites since so much work goes into creating each and every one of our products. I think I’m most proud that we never compromise on products. Even if it takes much longer than expected, we won’t release products until they’ve been thoroughly iterated and vetted to truly perform and produce stellar results.” It’s this commitment to quality that she believes has earned them their beauty awards, rave reviews and a loyal client base so many of their products have, including the Peach Slices Acne Spot Dots, the Peach Slices Honey Aqua Glow moisturizer and the Peach and Lily sheet masks. In fact, as a frequent traveler regularly commuting between New York and Seoul for her work, Alicia herself says she never leaves home without the Peach & Lily sheet masks, masking both in-flight and after! “I’ve seen that this helps my skin not miss a beat despite the dry flight air or jetlag,” Alicia shares. Luca loves Peach & Lily and highly recommends you check out their website at https://www.peachandlily. com/ where you can even sort the products by your skin concern. We are particularly obsessed with Alicia’s curated line, Peach Slices (also available at CVS)! For more information on Peach & Lily as a business, Korean beauty products, and overall skincare, also take a gander at Pibuu (https://www.pibuu.co/), another website of Alicia’s where you can find interesting articles and answers to all of your skincare questions from experts.

PESTICIDES IN OUR FOOD Words Dr. Karen Prentice DOFAAP In 1903, Thomas Edison wrote, “The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.” Fast forward to 2018 and we can see some truth in his words. In fact, poor nutrition has now surpassed smoking as a cause of cancer. Studies show that eating a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can not only reduce cancer, but heart disease, obesity, and diabetes as well. According to the CDC, only 12% of Americans eat the minimum daily requirements of fruit (three servings per day) and only 9% eat the minimum daily requirement of vegetables (four servings per day). We all know we need to eat more fruit and veggies, and many of us are trying, but it’s important to go a step further and consider whether we should be eating organic or not as well. Organic fruits and vegetables are grown without the use of pesticides, while conventionally-grown produce does use pesticides and can contain pesticide residues even after washing and peeling the fruit or vegetable. And what is a pesticide? It’s a chemical or chemicals (in this case, essentially poisons) used to destroy the reproductive and nervous systems of pests that attack our food. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets limits on the amounts and types of pesticides that can be used with our food, and many pesticides have been banned in the U.S., but many pesticides still used in the U.S. have been banned in Europe. Of greatest concern is the effects of pesticides on pregnant women and their developing babies, children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems – but pesticides can harm us all: They have been linked to infertility, thyroid disease, breast cancer, brain cancer, lymphoma, Parkinson’s disease, childhoodleukemia, andtoneurobehavioral problems in children, such as ADHD and autism. If that’s not enough, many scientists and doctors believe that organic produce is more nutritious for usthanconventionalproduce–unfortunately, italso tends to be more expensive. So how can we afford

to eat all the fruits and vegetables that we need? A good place to start is with the “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean Fifteen” lists from the Environmental Working Group (EWG). The “Dirty Dozen” are the top twelve fruits and vegetables with the highest pesticide load. These in particular are worth spending the money to buy organic. On the other hand, the“Clean Fifteen”are conventionally grown fruits and vegetables with very little to no pesticide residue. For these, save your money and buy the conventionally-grown produce. Both lists are put together using USDA studies of pesticides on our produce and their breakdown products. A highlight from the 2018 EWG list states that, “more than 1/3 of strawberry samples had 10 or more pesticide residues; 98% of strawberries, peaches, potatoes, nectarines, cherries, and apples tested positive for residueofatleastonepesticide;andspinachsamples had, on average, almost twice as much pesticide residue by weight compared to any other crop.” On a good note, you can save money and buy regular avocados, broccoli, and cantaloupe. For the complete report, check out EWG’s 2018 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce at www.ewg.org. In addition to following the EWG lists above, why not give growing your own produce a try? I was surprisingly successful with my backyard vegetable garden – even in the harsh Arizona heat! Or you can get coupons for organic produce online at most of your favorite stores. And check out LocalHarvest. org or the USDA website to find a farmer’s market near you. I hope these tips help and keep you well. As author Ann Wigmore said, “The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.”

FEEL ANXIETY FREE Words Kirra Wong, MA LAMFT Can you recall a time when you’ve suddenly drawn a blank just as a teacher called on you in class? Or maybe once when you were giving a presentation and forgot what you were saying mid-sentence? We’ve all been there – those quick moments of fear when we want to run and hide. But why do we experience anxiety? Our brains have evolved to trigger fight, flight, or freeze responses that are meant to help us in life-threatening situations, even though present-day dangers no longer tend to involve potentially getting eaten by a wild animal. In today’s world, anxiety more often serves as a way for our bodies to inform us that something is wrong. Whether it’s going on a first date or taking a test that you aren’t prepared for, anxiety is there to help us focus and remind us to pay attention to what’s happeninginourenvironment, aswellastheinternal experience of our thoughts and feelings. Anxiety is typically not a pleasant experience. Symptomsofanxietyincludefeelingrestlessoreasily fatigued, irritability, difficultyconcentrating, muscle tension, difficultyfallingorstayingasleep, pounding heart, sweating, headaches, upset stomach,

dizziness, diarrhea, and worrying thoughts. It makes sense that anxiety is usually not a welcomed experience! The good news is that there are many ways to manage anxiety. Mindfulness is the practice of focusing on being in the present moment, which can be helpful when our thoughts remain stuck on a past hurtful situation or worst-case scenarios of the future. Another way to cope is by utilizing deep breathing exercises. Whether you are stressed because you are stuck in traffic, fearful of being late to an important meeting, or on an airplane for the first time, you can use mindfulness and deep breathing to help calm you. Although you cannot cure anxiety with foods, your diet can certainly help you feel more in control of managing it. Stay away from alcohol and caffeine. Dehydration can also cause moods to change, so make sure to get plenty of water. If you’ve heard the saying, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” it’s because there may be some truth to it: Eating protein for breakfast can help bring up yourenergywhilekeepingyourbloodglucoselevels steady (drops and spikes in blood sugar levels can

13

triggerfeelingsofanxiety, evenwithoutanyexternal causes). Eating foods that have vitamin B, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids can help increase one’s sense of wellbeing. Exercise is another important factor to consider in maintaining mental health. Studies show that exercise and aerobic activity produce endorphins – chemicals in the brain that are associated with feelings of pleasure, euphoria, connection to others, and pain relief. As little as five minutes of aerobic activity can stimulate anti-anxiety effects. If symptoms persist or begin to impede on your quality of life, you may want to consider talking to a psychotherapist. There are many types of therapy that are effective treatments for anxiety: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) are just a few. Medication can also be prescribed and has been known to be effective when taken in conjunction with psychotherapy. But therapy isn’t one size fits all – eachpersonisdifferentwithuniqueexperiencesand

personalities – so what works for one person may not be the best approach for another. Take the time to learn about the types of treatment out there and talk with your doctor about options. Don’t be afraid to try more than one method to see what works for you. Your doctor can also provide you with referrals to mental health professionals in your area. There are many choices when considering how you want to manage anxiety. Some of us can cope independently and some us of need the support of others. Just remember: there’s no right or wrong way to manage it. It’s up to you to guide the way and determine the best course of action to meet your individual needs.

DIVERSIFYING STOCK RISK FOR LONG TERM GAIN words Craig Moore, Financial Planner at Ironwood Wealth Management

“Invest in stocks – you’ll be rich!” Not so fast novice investor – it’s just not that simple. Broadly defined, a stock is partial ownership in a company. A person invests a monetary sum into a company by purchasing shares (equity ownership) in the company. By owning shares, a stockholder can potentially realize an investment gain, depending on many different factors, including how well the company does. This all sounds simple, right? Actually, owning an individual stock can be a rather risky proposition. An investor is risking their entire investment on the relative performance of one specific company. Depending on their circumstances, this level of risk may or may not be suitable for the investor. Speaking to the young professional who wants to begin saving for his or her future: What are your circumstances? New job, low to moderate income, student loans perhaps, new family maybe? Are you saving for retirement with 30+ years of career ahead of you? Can you handle the up and down swings your investment will inevitably take? An investor must evaluate their situation and their stomach for risk. Trading stocks can be thrilling and exciting, but also extremely difficult to be successful at long-term. As a young person, you must remember that your goal is to save for your future, not to feel a rush of excitement - if you want that, go ride a roller coaster. For your future’s sake, take the emotion out of investing and adopt a fundamentally sound investment philosophy. It is fine to take on various levels of risk depending on circumstances, but do so in a way that, while being aggressive, you are not putting all your proverbial eggs in one basket. As a financial planner at Ironwood Wealth Management, I speak with people all the time who are invested heavily in a singular company via stock ownership. But at my firm, we do not deal or invest in singular stocks – we preach diversification, in large part to attempt to mitigate risk. Instead of putting our clients into singular stocks, we invest their dollars in investment products that own many stocks. Examples of these investment products

are Mutual Funds and Exchange Traded Funds. By investing in these types of products, an investor can potentially focus on various sectors of different markets or many companies within the same sector of a market. However, instead of owning a sole stock, they own shares of many company stocks. By doing so, mutual funds and exchange traded funds still have the potential higher upside normally associated with stocks over time, but they also help to diversify the risk because it is now spread over the performance of many companies, and potentially even different sectors of the markets depending on the fund. There is an extreme likelihood that the younger generation will need a more aggressive portfolio than their parents did. When staring down the prospects of having a reduced social security benefit, higher healthcare cost later in life, the rising cost of college tuition for their future children, and the average life span increasing, Generation X and Millennials are faced with an undoubtable need to save more. Because of this, aggressive asset classes will likely need to be a sizeable portion of any portfolio belonging to a member of these generations. Mutual Funds and Exchange Traded Funds geared towards equity asset classes can be the medium in which the portfolio can expect growth while being diversified among many companies and/or markets. Given time, proper diversification, and a fundamental, well thought out investment strategy, mutual funds and exchange traded funds can potentially provide a young investor with adequate returns to save for their future. I implore the younger generations to steer away from the sexiness of trying to time the markets, acting like they are day traders. Take the time to properly evaluate your risk profile, evaluate life goals, and develop a well thought out plan to financial success. Look to utilize a diversified portfolio of mutual funds and exchange traded funds. With a steady contribution rate and time on your side, you can save and grow your portfolio to meet your financial goals.

15 Novel Idea words Brittany Chetochine

Brave is the fierce memoir of activist, actress, model, singer, and author Rose McGowan. Harsh and direct, it is a particularly relevant book that shines a light on one of the women and some of the stories that have led to the #timesup and #metoo movements. Encouraging and empowering, Brave details Rose’s life from the Children of God cult through the Cult of Hollywood and how she’s risen above them all.

Still Me is the third instillation in the fictional Me Before You trilogy (perhaps you’ve seen the film adaptation of the first book with the same name, starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin) by Jojo Moyes. A romantic, clever story, Still Me details the main character’s move to New York City to begin a new chapter in her life with a new career. There, she works to reconcile the different sides of herself – new adventure vs. old flame, life in a new country, differences in class and privilege – while still remaining true to who she is.

This Is Me is a nonfiction collection of personal essays by Chrissy Metz – one of the stars of the hit TV show This Is Us. Autobiographical, with moments of self-help, Chrissy shares her story from childhood through becoming a known Hollywood actress, all while encouraging readers to grow, have confidence, find their path, and love themselves.

LOUI JOVER Words Christine Guthrie & Loui Jover Australian artist, Loui Jover, challenges himself draw something new every day. Although he formally studied commercial and graphic art and holds an advanced certificate in visual communication, today he is a self-represented, successful artist. He has held several solo exhibitions, and his works have been included in numerous collective shows and acquired by private, corporate and public collectors throughout the world. His illustrations, cartoons and artworks have been reproduced in books and other printed periodicals. His primary medium is ink (India or Sumi) on paper, but he is adept with oils and acrylics and enjoys making and using collage. His popular style consists of flowing ink images on glued together pages from vintage books - an aesthetic born out of necessity one day when he could not afford paper. His career and motivation... “I have drawn since childhood and as other children stop at some point in their development, I never did. I draw obsessively every single day filling books with ideas, cartoons and drawings. So my drawing abilities seem to have developed in natural progression, giving me the ability to freely use a number of distinct styles and approaches. Making drawings and creative pieces is a fundamental part of my very nature and a major part of my expressive communication, so I am motivated by sheer necessity to create and express.” About his art... “Right now I like making ink drawings on adhered-together sheets of vintage book paper. There is a fragility to these images that I find interesting (as if the wind may blow them away at any moment) and the hand-drawn stark black lines against the intricate printed words of the

book pages offer a strange fusion and depth that seems to give the images a kind of ‘meaning’ and back story, even though unconnected in a contrived way. I never pick the image for the pages or vice versa, they just collide as chance permits, any meaning they may have is purely created by the observer and their own imaginings. My style is figurative and messy at times…..I mainly use ink and brush and I like to use gouache as well.” On using vintage books... “At first I glued book pages together because that was all I had, and I couldn’t afford to buy paper. At that time I was using found cardboard sheets, brown wrapping paper and other things to draw on, but the book pages just looked good-to-go once glued together. Also, the use of recycled paper really appeals to me on a number of levels; I much prefer marked, foxed and stained papers to white, virginal sheets of stock.” His advice to artists... “Find a style…be inspired and influence and even steal, but find your own voice and believe in yourself. Don’t let opinion muddy the water of your own vision and always practice, practice, practice.”

Loui currently lives in Queensland, Australia with his wife, Fee, and daughter. He has a second studio in Fitzroy, Melbourne, which he visits several times each year to do street art - so you may even happen upon one of his pieces if you are down that way! Loui Jover artwork is available on various websites including www.saatchiart. com and via louijoverproductions@gmail.com

THE DANCE of ESCARAMUZA words Myra Carlos This is more than a story about a girl and her horse. It is a story about how family tradition introduced a young woman to a sport unique to her culture, and how that turned into a lifelong passion. That sport is escaramuza: Solely for women, it is a sight to behold, as a team of ladies ride sidesaddle and make their horses dance in rhythm to Mexican music. Akin to synchronized swimming, it entails elaborate, intricate, and detailed choreography between rider and horse, then rider and horse and team, performing as one. It is a big part of charrería – an equestrian tradition similar to rodeo that started in herding communities in Mexico in the 18th century. More than just for managing livestock, the tradition was created to foster better relationships between different families and is passed on through generations. Now, the charrería lives on in schools and associations where today’s youth are taught competitionlevel on skills, such as roping and reining using wild mares and bulls. The escaramuza outfit is crucial to the sport, described both as an art and a responsibility. Responsibility because they are judged on the quality of their garb as well as how identical they are with their team. And art because the escaramuza outfit comes with braided wide brimmed hats or sombreros and beautiful floor-length dresses cinched on the waist by a rebozo (a flat piece of material like a scarf or shawl, used like a belt in this situation), adorned with ruffles, flowers, and bows. On the feet of these competitors are boots with spurs on the left heel. The end result is an impressive display of balance between traditional femininity and athleticism. The star of our story is Esperanza Corona Rodriguez, who proudly states that she has been riding since she was nine. In 1976, her father purchased a lienzo charro, or a rodeo sports arena, now named the Corona Ranch and Rodeo Grounds. From there, Esperanza and her sisters practiced

22 and studied with a trainer from Mexico City, who was specifically brought to the United States to train men and women in the sport of charrería. Esperanza remembers, “We were trained to ride only sidesaddle and were one of the first escaramuza teams in Arizona to perform. Four other young girls and I rode in exhibition performances for a traveling equestrian show by Mexican folk singer, Antonio Aguilar. As time went on, our team hired expert trainers from Mexico to teach us the proper techniques needed for competition.” Esperanza devoted a lot of time to the sport, which requires its athletes to train two days a week for two to three hours. Part of the first-ever little girls team (ages 6 to 9) in the state of Arizona to be a part of the national US competition, they scored high enough to compete in Mexico. She describes her greatest accomplishment as when she was able to ride with her daughter in her

then-eight-year-old’s first state competition. She adds, “We continued to compete together, along with my sister Beatriz Corona Ruelas and her daughter Nereida on our team called Tonali. We also rode in exhibition shows for corporate events held at Corona Ranch and Rodeo Grounds.” Esperanza stopped competing six years ago, but her days with the sport are far from over. She and her sisterin-law, Claudia Vega (who is also a certified trainer), formed the non-profit organization Virgen de la Soledad, which provides people with riding lessons. They act as ambassadors of their beloved sport, eager to invite young women to get involved in it. She adds, “We teach the history and origins of escaramuza riding so that the culture of this tradition keeps going, even on this side of the border.” With such dedication and passion, the charrería and escaramuza traditions live on.

JORDYN JONES hitting it BIG

words Daniel Larsen

A blonde-haired beauty, there’s a lot more than meets the eye when it comes to Jordyn Jones. The young star is a talented dancer, actress, and singer. And after living in Los Angeles for the past eight years, Jordyn has built up quite a successful career to prove it: “I’ve had so much fun working on different television shows, such as Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition, Kids’ Choice Awards, Dancing with the Stars and Shake It Up! As an actor, I starred in the Youtube Red movie Dance Camp, and of course now I am playing the lead in Overnights!” Her newest role as Mack in Overnights allows Jordyn to further develop her career, as well as inspire her fans. She shares, “What I would want my fans to take away from my role as Mack is that you can overcome anything in life! I was sent away because I was making bad decisions, but I had a dream of being an artist, got thrown an offer, and took it. Whether or not something may seem like a bad idea, just forget all the negatives and go for your dreams.”

30 A quick glance at social media (with over four million followers!) and it’s clear just how busy Jordyn is. She’s constantly capturing and posting beautiful images, creating new music, and working on new projects. Jordyn tells us of her daily life, “A typical day would be schoolwork in the morning, hair and makeup after that, then going to meetings or the studio all day. I basically live at the recording studio right now.” There’s no doubt some amazing things will come from these studio sessions, and Jordyn heads to the studio fully-inspired and ready to record. She tells us of her creative process, “I draw inspiration from everyday life – especially what I’m going through at that moment. Whether it’s pain or happiness, I write it down and see what comes out of it.” Jordyn encourages other inspiring song writers or screenwriters to write any and all ideas down, she exclaims, “It may be genius!!”

33 Although Jordyn tells us she’d always rather be working, she spends her free time hanging out with friends or going to concerts and games. Otherwise, “I spend the most time with my mom and my boyfriend; they are the people I have the most fun with!” Although her downtime is sure to be fun, the young star has lofty goals: “In five years I hope to be performing in huge arenas and meeting you guys [her fans] every single night. I hope to have an album out in addition to owning a clothing line because that’s something I’ve been wanting to do. I’m just soooo busy!” Poised and ready, Jordyn’s career is off to an amazing start and she doesn’t plan on slowing down any time soon.

LEVI MEADEN BREAKING IN

words Grace Tobin Levi Meaden is ready for his close up in the new film Breaking In. This blonde heartthrob is not the typical man of his generation as his favorite films involve Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard and his experience in the industry comes from studying writing and directing in Prague. On his favorite part of studying in Prague, he said, “The history and art in the city really lends itself to the imagination. There was no shortage of locations or story ideas that city can give you. It also has great film traditions, in fact one of the oldest film schools in the world, FAMU, is in Prague.” His passion for the craft, along with his drive to see the world of Hollywood from a new perspective, contribute to make him an up and coming star who directors cannot get enough of. Meaden’s role in Breaking In is one of his most complex characters yet. He plays a kidnapper who has taken the children of one of the world’s fiercest tiger-moms played by Gabrielle Union. The already

intense subject matter is elevated by Meaden’s superb and creative acting abilities. Throughout the film, he shows immense inner conflict as he waffles with his decision to break into this woman’s home. On his most enjoyable aspect of this movie, Meaden said, “I was happy I got to work on creating a character again and a bad guy at that.” Levi Meaden’s villainous character in Breaking In greatly contrasts his work in the March 2018 smash hit Pacific Rim: Uprising in which he portrayed an all-around good guy fighting off the monsters terrorizing the world. This awe-inspiring role let him shine alongside co-stars Scott Eastwood and John Boyega. When asked what his favorite part about the film was, he responded, “The scope of the world built for Pacific Rim: Uprising was massive. It was such an amazing sandbox to play in.” The film Breaking In did not mark the first time that Meaden dabbled in being the bad guy. He starred in Netflix’s Emmy nominated series

The Killing alongside Joan Allen in their last season where he found himself mixed up with several brutal murders as the student leader in a military school. This role earned him award nominations for the Leo & ACTRA in his homeland of Canada. In fact, when asked what role he was most proud of, Levi responded, “The Killing, just because it was my first big thing and the first time I really felt validated that this could be my career.” On his future career goals, Meaden said, “I want to get to a point where I have more control over the roles I have available to me, whether that means producing or writing or acting. Currently keeping my eyes open for compelling material.” The young dreamer has in fact had experience behind the camera as he produced a feature length documentary called Citizen Marc. This piece premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival. As for any particular people he would like to work with in the future and actors that he admires, he said, “I have a laundry list of actors I

35

37

38 want to work with. I’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing actors and directors already in my career. I think Jeff Bridges might be the top of my yet-to-work with list though, I’ve always been a huge fan of his. I tend to model myself after character actors like Jeremy Renner, Walter Goggins, etc. Someone who shows up in a few blockbuster pictures but never shies away from smaller more personal roles.” His film industry skills do not make up the entirety of talents that this Canadian possesses. When prompted what the one thing is that he wished more people knew about him, Meaden responded, “I worked as a cook for years to support myself. My mom always worried about me going into the arts so she made sure I had a trade to fall back on. It took a while to get my career off the ground so I was working 5 days in a kitchen and 2 days at a production company for months on end.” Moreover, when asked how he de-stresses in the middle of the whirlwind that is Hollywood living, he said, “Cooking. Once it stopped being a career I learned to love it again. I love to plan out a big recipe and spend a night cooking everything from scratch. Usually with a good IPA.” Levi Meaden is not the onedimensional Hollywood star that most would expect. On the contrary, he is through-andthrough a family man. When prompted to share what he is most passionate about, he said, “I think maybe my belief in family. I’ve had a lot of family stuff going on recently but it’s

strong bonds and the love I have for my family that has kept us all together.” On why they named him Levi, he said, “I’ve never really gotten an answer. Anytime I’ve asked they just tell me I looked like a Levi. I still think it has something to do with the jeans…” This core belief in family must have been what attracted him to current girlfriend Ariel Winters, one of the many stars in the hit show Modern Family. The gorgeous couple are living together along with their adorable fur babies. At the end of the day, Levi Meaden is just a small town boy who loves Canada for the family-like loyalty and dependability and whose guilty pleasure is 9 to 5 because “those sisters were doing it for themselves.” His perfect day probably is similar to the perfect day of his viewers. On an ideal day for this major star, he said, “Wake up, make some breakfast. Chill out watch a movie or some football. Write a little bit. Go for a hike or bowling or escape room. Then back home where I cook a meal and another movie.” His annoyances also echo the annoyances of the Average Joe. When asked about his pet peeve, Meaden responded, “I hate when you’re trying to watch a movie and people keep talking and then asking what just happened, or when people keep asking what’s GOING to happen next. It’s like ‘Dammit! The movies trying to show you, so let it!’” Meaden is certainly not one to selfishly steal all of the spotlight and hide it away. After Meaden was asked what he

wishes his fans can take away from his work, he responded, “I just hope maybe I can inspire someone from a small town. My family comes from a town of 300 people and where I grew up, at least at the time, the arts weren’t so big. Watching movies and seeing people on screen deal with the problems I was dealing with really gave me some comfort and made feel less out of place in the world.” If there does happen to be a small town kid out there aspiring to reach the level of success of Meaden, maybe he/ she could try his pre-filming ritual. On getting in the zone, he said, “Every role needs a new approach. But the day of shooting I try to keep a clear head. Avoid too much noise, especially social media and I focus only on music, tv and movies that are in line with the scenes of the day.” Levi Meaden is truly the star on the rise that the film industry has been lacking. He brings the perfect combination of old school influences and a new school flare to the table. As a cherry on top, he is a genuine man with small town values. As his character breaks in to Gabrielle Union’s house in this striking new film, Levi Meaden breaks into the hearts of every impressionable soul across the globe.

NATHANIEL POTVIN

Words | Daniel Larsen Triple threat Nathaniel Potvin has remained amazingly level-headed despite starting in the entertainment industry at a very early age; something that hasn’t always been easy to do. Nate started studying break dance, pop-lock dancing and hip hop at the age of seven and was hired to dance in a Target commercial shortly after. The young talent would go on to take an acting class at his local dance studio, where his passion for performance was ignited. His career quickly took root and over the course of the past decade, he can be seen on a variety of shows – everything from Girl Meets World to Mech-X4 to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Nate shares, “I think that a huge stigma of child actors is that when they grow up they are either crazy or don’t know what to do with their lives. Neither of those things describe me. The most common challenge is having to balance my education and a career at the same time. It is a difficult task but something that I have been dealing with for years and have mastered. The way I overcame it was just hard work, non-stop, on both fronts.”

42 At eighteen, Nate’s thriving career has led him to his most recent role in the Facebook production Five Points. With actor and activist Kerry Washington as executive producer, the new series follows five high school students in Chicago through a life-changing event. Nate portrays Wallace Marks, one of the five students telling his perspective of the event. He shared with us about this new opportunity, “My favorite role so far has to be my role on Five Points because of the depth behind the character.” The complex and intense Wallace Marks character provides a logical next step in Nate’s career path. “My career goal is to not only be an award-winning actor and director, but also to leave behind a legacy that completely changes the way people think about a certain subject.” The young actor possesses a clear vision and intense passion for his craft. Nate revealed that he’s, “…most passionate about films—I love everything about filmmaking…I get it from both of my parents. They both have worked in the industry and fuel my love for movies and music.” He adds, “The thing I enjoy most about being an actor is that I get to meet other people with the same passion as me. I love talking with different actors and crew members about which movies inspire them and what they want their work to be like.” Another reason we love the star? He shares our passion for fashion! He divulged to us that his appreciation for fashion runs deep and that he’s really into Chanel. “My style icon right now is a mix between Sean Wotherspoon, Donald Glover, and Pharrell Williams.” Needless to say, Nate’s got good fashion sense and he finds a guilty pleasure in collecting sneakers. Other interests include photography, working out, and trying new restaurants. In his free time, Nate often watches movies and television as he enjoys analyzing each project. As our society and Hollywood are rapidly undergoing changes to eradicate stigma and intolerance, Nate welcomes these changes and is aware of all the moving pieces around him. In fact, Childish Gambino’s new wildly artistic and politically-charged single “This Is America” is the newest addition to his playlist. Through the hectic ups and downs and tough conversations, this talented young biracial star has thrived. In light of recent events, the young activist recognizes what needs to be done and has plans to influence change in the area of diversity in Hollywood. Nate shares, “My experience as a biracial actor in Hollywood has been good. I hear a lot of stories about how some biracial people can’t seem to fit in with which race they identify with, but I have found my niche in this industry, which is super important if you want to go anywhere.” Nate is confident in his identity, which has allowed him to refine his talent and become one of the keys to his success.

43

44 Appreciative of his many breakout roles on Disney Channel, Nate is beyond grateful for the launch pad they provided him as an actor. He would love to continue the relationship but shares, “I’m not sure if I’ll have the chance to work on other Disney Channel projects, but I would like to work with Disney feature films and Marvel.” Nate also has ambitions of taking on a wider variety of roles, including some behind the camera! We have no doubt that this young star is soon to become an influential force in Hollywood.

Runaway with

Gregg Sulkin

47

words Daniel Larsen Beyond fashion, beauty and entertainment, the essence of Luca Magazine is positivity and the mantra that you get out of the world what you put into it; In fact, the name Luca means “bringer of light”. If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Gregg Sulkin after our interview and photoshoot, it’s that he too is truly a bringer of light. The star seems to be endlessly optimistic – it’s no wonder Hollywood welcomed him when he arrived young and bright-eyed: “I entered this industry when I was thirteen years old. I was extremely fortunate to book the lead role in a feature film called Sixty Six after my first-ever audition. Helena Bonham Carter played my mother. I have continued to work on television and in film for many years. Now, a decade later, I am on a Marvel television show so thankfully, to date, it has all worked out according to plan. I realize I have been fortunate, but at the same time, I definitely have faced rejection. I’ve always believed that the sign of a true champion is how they respond to a defeat or rejection, so it was vital that in those moments, I responded with positivity and self-belief.” Looking at the glass as half-full and keeping his eye on the prize have been keys to Gregg’s success, “Thankfully over the past decade I’ve been able to continue to grow as an actor. That is what is most important to me.”

48 Although Helena Bonham Carter was Gregg’s first on-screen mom, he wouldn’t be here today without the support of his real mother and the rest of his family. Gregg tells us, “They [Gregg’s parents] have been incredibly supportive throughout my career. I would love to be as good of a father one day as my dad has been to me, and I hope to marry someone who is going to be as good of a mother as mine has been.” The star’s parents have been instrumental to his success, but he also looks up to some people in the industry, “I massively respect actors such as Michael Shannon, Leonardo Di Caprio, George Clooney and Robert DeNiro. However, there are some fantastic young actors on the rise, such as Michael B. Jordan and Andrew Garfield, whom I look up to as well.” With his current momentum, we’re certain Gregg will be able to shape his career into one as legendary as his idols. Aside from his goal to one day play James Bond, Gregg also strives to move into more roles behind the camera, “I want to own a production company and produce content. Content that I want to make. Content that means something – not just content to make money.” Smashing every role he takes on, his growth as an actor has been a gift to us all. As the star’s career continues to climb, not only is he taking on more dynamic and challenging roles, but he also has more say in the roles he accepts. “Thankfully, I am at the stage in my career where I don’t have to take a job just to take a job. My next projects will be ones that either have a great message/ script, a great team on board, or something that I have created myself.” We can only dream of how amazing Gregg’s next performances will be! Considering how accomplished his past and present are, there’s no doubt he has a bright future ahead. Gregg says of his career thus far, “Pretty Little Liars and Wizards of Waverly Place were a lot of fun to be part of. Each show had a huge fan base that was extremely passionate. Wizards was my first show in the United States, so it will always mean a lot to me; however, Marvel’s Runaways - the show I am shooting now - has probably been the most fun and challenging. I get to be a superhero. What kid doesn’t dream of that growing up?!” This Hollywood heartthrob can save our lives any day. So what’s a day in the life of one of today’s hottest rising stars? Gregg says of his daily life, “I am not very good at sitting still, so I always like

to be doing something productive. If I am not shooting – which is rare – I am either writing, reading, watching content or going to the gym. I constantly try to improve myself and expand my brain. Although, I do try to squeeze in a date here and there when I have time!” I know what you’re thinking: how can such a busy guy be in such great shape? Gregg spilled his stay-in-shape secrets with us, “Diet mainly. I try to work out 5 times a week, however it’s hard with a busy shooting schedule. I also try not to drink too much. Over the past few years, a nice cold glass of ice water has become more appealing to me.” Along with working hard and staying fit, the star has almost four million followers on Instagram and over a million on Twitter. If you’re not already following Gregg on social media, you should go and fix that now (@greggsulkin). For those of you who already do, you may recall that he only recently started using social media again after taking a hiatus. He gives two reasons for the break: “First – my own happiness. I felt like social media was becoming a job and I was posting because I felt like I had to. It didn’t feel authentic. Second – I felt I had a responsibility to my followers to be myself. I think it’s very important that we all embrace who we are, and what we stand for. How could I expect others to do that if I wasn’t doing that myself?” But this isn’t the only area here Gregg’s fame and fans have had an impact on his life. He shares his craziest fan experience, “I was in Brazil and fans broke into an area where I was staying. It was pretty intense, but they truly are wonderful in Brazil. Extremely passionate. I had to have police with guns escort me to and from my locations from then on!” A crazy experience, but thankfully not one he encounters every day, “Overall, my fans have been nothing but sweet. Usually very respectful and well-mannered.” Although Gregg works hard to keep his career moving forward, he always remembers to have fun with it. A perfect example is his upcoming movie Oh Boy, “The film is coming out in China next year. It will be my first film in China and I hope to be able to visit during press for the film. It’s a comedy, with a similar tone to the Seth Rogan/ Zac Efron’s film Neighbors. I get to play the head of a fraternity, so it was basically an excuse to have fun, party, and go wild.” Fun is an essential key to Gregg’s happy life, “Every moment of

53 life is fun. I love sports, interior design, fashion, poetry. There’s a lot in this world that keeps me entertained”, he tells us. Along with the fun he has on and off the screen, Gregg strives to do good both on and off the screen. When it comes to meaningful work he tells us, “I am happy that I worked for MTV on Faking It. It was an important show, especially for those in the LGBTQ community.” Not only has Gregg worked on some meaningful projects, but he himself also supports charities that are leaving their mark on the world every day: “Smile Train is a wonderful organization that helps children/ people have cleft repair surgery. I personally have been inside a surgery room with Smile Train in Mexico and they truly do wonderful things. They don’t just change smiles, they also change lives. In addition, Red Nose Day is another organization that is remarkable. They’ve been going in the UK for many years and have now expanded over to the US. They have helped millions of children living in poverty.” His support of these organizations is just the beginning – Gregg has huge philanthropic aspirations, “My goal is to one day build schools, hospitals and sports facilities in communities that are less economically developed. I am very fortunate, so I would love to give back. I have also helped build wells in countries that give communities access to clean drinking water, so I plan on continuing to do that.” The young talent has amazing advice for anyone that would like to give back: “Don’t think your single voice doesn’t matter, because it does. Also, don’t be violent or aggressive. Approach things in a calm manner but a firm one. That’s a better way of making your voice heard in my opinion, but definitely make it heard if something is not right.” This is something Gregg hopes his fans can take away from his current show, Runaways, “… that it is okay to challenge authority, as long as it’s done in a respectful, peaceful manner, of course. The wonderful thing about my generation is that we are willing to take a stand on important topics and not back down until things are corrected, similar to the Runaways.” Such crucial advice in a time when so much change is happening across varied social issues, specifically in America. However, the changes and controversies going on in today’s United States hadn’t swayed Gregg from his desire to become a U.S. citizen. The star elaborates, “I have always loved America. It is a

wonderful country and I am beyond grateful to be a citizen. I have spent many years keeping my head down and working hard in order for this to become a reality, so I am extremely pleased. I hope to live here for the rest of my life and eventually raise a family in this country.” The star’s love of the United States comes in part from his deep appreciation for the city he currently calls home, Los Angeles, “I love being around creative people. LA can be a cut-throat place for sure, but there is also a wonderful energy that runs through it. Dreams can become reality here and I think that’s a very special quality.” What more do you want to know about Gregg? Maybe you want to know that eight is his favorite number because, “I like the way it looks. There is no break in the number eight. It represents strength in my opinion.” Maybe you want to know that he enjoys watching Scandal, or that his style icon is David Beckham, “He keeps it simple and classy. The bloke wears a suit well!” We love how caring, reflective, and open Gregg was, and we are so glad he was willing to share his time with us!

How To Get A Gorgeous Summer Glow words Corinna Cooke, Beauty Director Summer’s best accessory is a gorgeous glowing complexion. Whether you’re on the beach, going to work, or heading out to a balmy evening soiree, nothing says “hello beautiful” quite like a glowing skin and cheekbones that radiate light! The warmer months call for less makeup: soften your eyebrows, use a lightweight foundation (if any at all), scale back the heavy eye makeup, and opt for a juicy, glossy, just-bitten lip. But before you go pounding highlighter along your zygomatic arch, let’s look at 4 steps to the perfect summer glow. The Cleanse: A glowing complexion is not only about clean skin, it is also about using the right cleanser for your skin type. Foaming cleansers can turn dry skin into alligator hide and milky cleansers don’t always lift away enough sebum to keep an oily girl’s complexion clear. For makeup removal, here at the Luca offices, we keep cotton pads and Micellar Water cleansers to help us make the high-speed transition from workday to night on the town. We love skyn ICELAND’s Micellar Water with Arctic Algae, Bioderma Sensibio H20, or Garnier SkinActive Micellar Water. Exfoliate: Your skin needs a luxe, smooth surface to bounce off the light, making regular exfoliating an essential part of summer skin beauty. An enzyme mask once or twice per week (as needed) can lift away dead cells and debris from the surface of the skin, leaving you with a gorgeous, gleaming complexion. Our favorites are Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask, ExfoliKate by Kate Somerville, or a fresh and fruity homemade Papaya Enzyme Mask.

63 Hydrate: Sunshine, beach days, chlorine pools, and hot weather can leave your skin parched – quench that thirst with a weekly hydrating mask! Best-selling hydration masks include Summer Fridays’ fabulous new Jet Lag Mask, Glossier’s Moisturizing Moon Mask, and Laneige Water Sleeping Mask (all available at Sephora). Go For The Glow: The final step in getting a summer glow is adding some highlight. You are not a unicorn, so avoid anything holographic. Sunshine and sparkles are archenemies - avoid products with big particles or glittery finishes. Instead choose a highlight that glows and makes the skin look lit from within.
