ChiaHao Hsu Portfolio

about me. Greetings. My name is Chia Hao Hsu. I am a Taiwanese student who is currently pursuing a master in industrial design at Central Saint Martins. My grandfather was a mechanical engineer who designed machinery such as gears and decelerators. My father expanded the business to general production such as military-grade hand-held transciever to gift boxes. As for me? I enjoy making things with my hands and am eager to learn about the technology side of things. Not that I was born with a passion for coding, but because I believe designers should do everything we can to make working prototypes and understand the essence of our products. Taiwan is a country full of talented and hardworking people. I plan to take my design thinking skills and uplift manufacturers to brands. Sincerely, Chia Hao

Sun & Flower

DESIGN RESPONSE This is a branding project that involves designing a packaging for a perfume brand. We wanted to create an interactive packaging that users can keep in their room. Because our perfume has a strong association with flowers, we reinforced the image of a flower with an interactive flower packaging. Furthermore, to create a positive image of the flower, the interactive flower will "wake up" when the sun is up, and "go to sleep" when the sun sets. The mechanism is based on light sensor and motor, controlled by arduino.

& SUN

INTERACTIVE WINDOW DESIGN Besides packaging design, we also thought about how the store should present this unique interactive design. Using "kinect", a motion sensing input device, we could detect the motion of a person waving their hand, and give a feedback of a sun following the movement of the hand.

DON'T FORGET YOUR UMBRELLA

DESIGN RESPONSE I wanted to create an umbrella that is "unforgettable". When people leave their umbrellas in the umbrella bin at a store, it is very easy to forget them if the rain stops. As a response to people's forgetfulness about their umbrella, I changed the handle of the umbrella to a purse hook. With this additional function, people will be reminded to take the umbrella with them as they leave. At the same time, it also prevents umbrella thiefs from stealing a handle-less umbrella.

PROTOTYPING

PURSE HOOK

HOW IT FITS

HANDLE SHAPE

I experimented with using a flexible string to use as a purse hook, but soon realize that the structure of an umbrella is capable of doing that already.

The challenge of prototyping the "unforgettable umbrella" is to find the right shape that will serve as a purse hook, which also balances on the table.

USAGE & FUNCTIONS To use the "unforgettable umbrella", users first separate the handle from the main body of the umbrella. This way, it also prevents umbrella thieves from stealing handle-less umbrellas. With the handle removed, users can easily use the handle as a purse hook while sitting down at a table or bar. As a result, when the users leave the restaurant, he or she will remember to take the umbrella with them because they have the handle in their hand.

Share Chair

DESIGN RESPONSE This project is about different methods of creating a form. I experimented with sand casting, and used PU foam as a medium. I also like the shape of a wave-absorbent rock, and chose the shape of it and based my experiment at a beach, where those rocks appear.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT Developing from my sand casting experiment, I used wires to construct a skeleton, and used shrinking film to form a general shape. Later, I filled the mold with PU foam and refined the shape. Lastly, I used pattern making techniques to create a slipcover for the furniture.

USER SCENARIOS

Pet Headset

TECHNOLOGY AS PET This projected started out with the idea of cellphone or technology product as pet. Because users are spending increasing amount of time with the mobile phone devices, I thought about the possibility of integrating pet features into common every day technology objects. This way, users will create a special bond with their tech companions, more than just a device to play in the hand. Furthermore, it is my hope that this bond will also provide their users with emotional comfort and warmth, so as physical.

HOW IT WORKS Arduino is used to control the movement of the device, which is powered by opposit turnings of motors. It is also equipped with bluetooth capability to communicate with the raspberry pi on mobile device. The raspberry pi is used to control the speakers and movement based on temperature data and weather data from phone. As a result, if the weather drops below a certain degree, the device will curl up around the user's neck in a gesture to warm him/her up.
