VII Issue - end of academic year 2009-10
CLASS of 2010 “Goodbye Downside” Letter from the editor
by Luca
It is with pleasure, pride and, certain, a bit of sadness that I invite you to read the last issue of the DKC magazine for the academic year 2009/10. I’m proud of the work we’ve done. I’ve been Graphic Editor of the DKC Magazine for about one year: there were ups and downs with the paper. We’ve come a long way from thousands of errors, stories turned in late, and all the time missing deadlines. But in all truth, when I think of the DKC now, we’ve gotten better and better. Now students know that there is a school newspaper, and that is amazing. All of this is thanks to our DKC staff. We may get sidetracked but we always bring you the story.. Enjoy! and see you back in September! Luca

Thank you for believing in me, for having created at Downside an environment where everybody are working as being in one big family but without taking off the professional side. WORLD C from our special correspondents from South Africa:
The Kusasa Project received a donation of tickets to attend the Italy vs Paraguay game - from Grassroots Soccer for 5 deserving children. Sintu Quza, our Project Manager attended as well - as their chaperone, he drove the children to Cape Town in The Kusasa Project bus and we supplied some snacks for the big day! “I would like to thank you all for making the Kusasa successful. I don’t know what I would be without you guys. You’ve helped me since I was in grade 6 until now. I’ve experienced many things and I would like to say that The Kusasa Project did a great job. We went to the Cape Town Stadium, and it was really fun! I enjoyed watching the match between Italy and Paraguay. To be honest, it was my first time going to Cape Town Stadium. I must thank you guys again, this is just the beginning and there are times when you will feel like quitting and there are many challenges you have to face, but what I want to tell you is that carry on helping other people. I met a lot of people in the stadium and I also learned some Italian language. I was very excited and I really blowed the Vuvuzela! As I’m a member of The Kusasa Project, I can really see the job that you doing and you’ve helped many people although there are some disappointments. I wish you guys all the best and I will always be there when you need me. Mr Doug you did a fantastic job and please don’t ever try to stop. Sintu, you’ve showed me that life is not a easy way to think of. To be honest. I used to

Kusasa Project.” Thank you letter from Bruce Ngxambane “To Kusasa Organisation (www.kusasaproject.org) Thank You !!! I would like to say than you for giving me that chance of a life time. For me it was a brilliant opportunity and experience to watch one of the best nations in the world.. live and also watch big players like Cannavaro, Buffon and Pirlo. At least I would have something to tell afterward and felt and still fill the spirit of the world cup and also be happy to be part of the FIFA World Cup history in South Africa. The name called Kusasa agree/shows exactly it’s own meaning because it was one of the experiences of tomorrow. The leaders of Kusasa should be proud of themselves because they will benefit more than us because they say you give and receive more than you give. A proudly raised child under The Kusasa Project. CUP 2010 Slovakia - Italy 3-2
by Kayleigh Williams
First Half On the 24th June 2010 Slovakia Vs Italy - the score was 3-2 to Slovakia. The person who scored for Slovakia was Robert Vittek in the 25th minute and it was a cracking goal. The goalie let them in by leaning over to the ball but he missed it and so the goal went in. During Half Time During half time they were talking about the amazing goal and it was really good but when the goalie let it in they were shocked because the goalie could have saved it. He was just standing there when the ball was coming towards him!! Second Half In the second half Slovakia scored and it was Robert Vittek scored in the 73rd minute and Italy were gutted so they started getting their heads in the game. Then in the 81st minute with 9 minutes left of the game Italy scored - it was Antonio Dinatale scored and Italy was feeling much better. However Kamil Kopunek Scored for Slovakia in the 89th minute with 1 minute to go plus extra time. Then Fabio Quagliarella scored in the 90th minute but there was 2 minutes extra time added on so technically they scored in the extra time and they were very pleased. But Italy lost and they were in a state of shock because they lost. But the score was still
Netherlands - Cameroon 2-1
by Shahir Ghani – 7DM
The Match kicked off in Cape Town and Cameroon were the side that got the first chance of the match but Netherlands Stekelenburg made and astonishing save. In the 36th minute, Holland’s van Persie scored and the score at half time was one nil to Holland. The second half began and after 65 minutes Cameroon got a penalty and Etóo scored it brilliantly and now it was game on. Huntellaar and Robben came on for van Persie and Kyut and they made a big difference. Robben hit the post but Huntelaar was there to make it 2 – 1. Cameroon had brilliant chances but they just could not score and the match finished and Holland kept their 100% winning streak going.
6 - South Africa 2010
WORLD C
First Half On 12th June 2010, England played the USA in a match that was full of suspense. From the beginning it proved to be a tough match. After four nerve wracking minutes, Gerrard scored against the USA goalkeeper, Tim Howard. (He was not offside when his goal was scored). After that not much happened until Clint Dempsey took a shot on goal from just outside the penalty area. Robert Green had the ball for a split second but then it slipped right through his gloved hands. It went past him as he dived to reach the ball but didn’t reach far enough. It went past the goal line as Green landed on the ground below. The USA fans were relieved that their team had scored before half time!
England were held to a 1-1 draw by the USA. England - USA 1-1 England took the lead at first, but unfortunately goal keeper Robert Green let the ball through so by Jade Bailey 6KST USA got their first score and it ended up with a draw of 1-1. Although everyone thinks it was Robert Green’s fault it wasn’t. It was a mistake and we learn from our mistakes. But I do agree that it wasn’t a very good game, but at least we have more games that we can be better in.
Second Half Nothing happened at the beginning of the second half until England tried to score again and again. Before the full time whistle went Emile Heskey was substituted for Peter Crouch. (Crouch was the second favourite possible goal scorer after Wayne Rooney at first!)
The World Cup is exciting, you never know who will win, whether it is a win, a draw, or a loss; the score is an unpredictable little man hiding in a box waiting to explode at a goal. Hand-balls, freekicks, penalties, and injuries are all part of the game too. The on looking crowd is waiting for a goal to celebrate with the Jack-In-The-Box effect. And then it all goes quiet; the ball is placed on the floor; a run-up is taken; the ball is STRUCK, WHOMP! The ball flies like a graceful bird soaring to its nest… IN THE BACK OF THE GOAL!!! And there goes the Jack-In-The-Box effect. Daniel Elano for a goal!!! The scorer’s blood is pumping ten billion times faster, the goalies heart has been slowed down by ten million beats per second. Someone is on the ball, an opponent comes in for the tackle, A GREAT CHALLENGE, but it’s a foul, and a yellow card, one more and he’s off. 45 minutes, the whistle goes

CUP 2010 for half-time. Everyone comes back on, the teams swap ends, the whistle goes, the second half has begun. He’s in the area he’s gone for a shot, IT’S HANDBALL! It’s a penalty, and a yellow card, FOLLOWED BY A RED! He’s off. The match is back in swing and its 60 minutes gone; can this be a draw or a win? Kaka flies down the wing like a speeding bullet; it’s a shot from thirty yards, it’s curling its past the defenders, towards the keeper, AND IT’S IN!!! 2-0!!! 73 minutes can they make a return? He’s cut through the centre, he’s got loads of space there; the ball is in to him, some skills from this player, towards the goal line, AND IT’S PASSED THE LINE!!! 2-1!!! In-Guk Mun, 86 minutes, he’s in the place again he’s on the ball, again, a shot, nicely struck, and it’s a save! 90 Minutes and the Game Is Up, They Think It’s over… It Is Now!!!
England - Germany 1-4 by Lauren Hearne – 5RF
England kicked off at 3.00pm it was some good passing of the ball England was bound to win, but then out of the blue Germany came in like a herd of buffalos. They tackled England and went for goal, they shoot they score, England on 0 Germany 1. It’s a good goal kick from David James, England’s got the ball, a good tackle by Germany, Germany has the ball, where’s our defence? And Germany scores again. England 0 Germany 2, it’s almost half time England’s got the ball some more good passing, England shoots and it’s a goal for England, the crowd goes wild. Germany’s goal kick, they pass the ball then
England tackles, Lampard goes for goal and its in, England scores again but the ref disallows it what an outrage! It’s now half time. Half time’s over back to the horrible game. It’s now very tense you can feel the tension coming out of the tv. Germany’s got the ball, a good pass by Germany, they shoot and goal by Germany, what a disaster. England’s goal kick, they shoot and miss, never mind. Germany’s got hold of the ball down near England’s goal, shoot and goal by Germany. End of the game 4 – 1, England’s going home.
8 - School reorganization A few d a y s a g o , during their play, t h e year 8 read a poem called
“My Hero”: my hero is the teacher it says… When I was kid there was a place when I felt safe: the school. The school, I was taught, has to be a place where you can and you have to enjoy every single moments: that was my generation safe-place. It was, and it is nowadays, something you know, something you always going to find in the same place where it was… A lot of things have changed since I was kid but one has stayed the same: my school is still there, with memories of a lot of kids: and is good, because if you want to breathe your past you have to go and enter, look around and start breathing… or maybe it is enough looking a photo. Now I have grown up and I’d love to say we live in a better world but the truth is we live in a strange world, a world where lemonade is made with artificial flavour while washing up liquid is made with real lemon… I’m writing because I want you to know what is happening to the schools here on the Isle of Wight, which is that, unfortunately, in 1 year’s time all middle schools will be forced to close because of the reorganization from 3 tier to 2 tier system to adapt to the mainland. A manoeuver desired by people shortsighted who never got involved in something as big and stressful, and certainly they cannot even imagine how big this thing is. My school is the best school I’ve ever been. My school is the best place I’ve ever worked. My school is emptying, many members of staff have left and others will follow next summer and I think who’s really lose from this huge thing are the children, moved from a teacher to another, good teachers but too often beginners without enough experience to fill in a short time the gap has been created in the continuity
of education of the children. My school has got a lot of different activities and all the staff work so hard to give the kids everything they need: the kids are lucky because on this site the staff are more than good, by Luca I’d define them incredible for the quantity and quality and variety of the activities we offer to the kids! A situation where politics is the main cause: there is not a parent happy about what is happening. There is not a child happy about what is happening, but that is another story… Honestly I think it is a reorganization linked to money somehow ... is called intelligent finance, money’s going, money’s coming ... something we’ll never understand, and that we could never understand because they do not want us to understand that. One thing is certain, the speed with which they set up the reform is shocking, the first drafts were put on the agenda right in 2008 when the credit crunch began to hit the world. To all those who “top down” look and rubbed their hands for profit, remember that “what goes up must go down”… and viceversa. Hopefully!!! My school is called Downside Middle School! You know, I spent a lot of time and energy doing this, especially I wanted to write something to remember me by but today I was out, in the garden, looking for a teacher… I was in the middle of something I’ll never forget: the kids. “Seeing the kids playing, laughing and the
atmosphere”: that’s what I’m going to miss more than everything else.
Thank you Downside Middle School! Even if you’re closing you’ll always be alive in my memories. Thank you to Mr. Pete Shaw for everything you’ve done for me. Thank you to Mr. Nigel Stares for everything you’ve done for me. Working with all of you was amazing!!!

Interviewing... Mr. PETER SHAW
by Jacob Keyte
Q: Are there any surprises to Downside in the coming months? - I’m hoping that if any of you watch TV there’s a bloke called Simon Rimer who appears on something for the Weekend on BBC 2 on a Sunday morning - he’s a well know chef, he’s a good mate of mine from home. I’m trying to get him to come down and do a day with us who will hopefully get him to do a careers day on how to run a restaurant and how to be on TV. I’m trying to get that going. Not surprising but
we will have a number of new staff coming in because School Reorganization is trying to bite; we’ve got some people coming, some people going …so there are a lot of changes coming our way. Q: How many staff are leaving the school? - Put it this way since probably the start of March maybe 12 people are going - not all are leaving this year in September, some are leaving next September. Q: What will you do when the school closes? - Part of me, probably the bigger part of me, will probably stay right until the end. I think it’s the right thing to do but I have not made a decision and that’s the straight answer. I don’t know if I what to stay on being head teacher or try to do something else. I’ve been a head for 7 years ,no sorry 8 years, it’s a pretty challenging job but I like it. Q: World Cup Predictions (Please note that this was done on the 10th of June 2010 the day before the match) - England take on the USA at the weekend England 1-0 USA then to win the all group matches ,then play Australia, beat them, beat France in the Quarters, Beat Brazil in the semis on penalties .Then we’ll play Holland or Argentina in the Final and get beat!

20 - Book review ‘Tins’ was a great book to read. At the start I thought it was going to be another boring book but as the book went on it was brilliant! The best was chapter 3 because it was when he found the finger and earing and it was gory. As the book went on it was getting better, because every tin had something new in it. The best thing was when he had the argument with the girl in the supermarket, then he found out she was a tin collector. Then they made friends and the next week they were round each others houses showing them the finger and earing but Charlotte had a ring and a ear. Then they knew it all matched up but they didn’t for certain until they found the note saying ‘HELP’. Then they knew it all matched up, so someone needed to do something about it. So Fergal did, but as Fergal does everyone gets worried about were he is when he gets to the factory he sees how bad it is and tries to run away but falls straight in the hands of Mr. and Mrs. Bamfeild… The story is written in the third person. You would like this book if you like action and gory things. The story was a long but fun story to read. 23 Mrs. Walker: I arrived at Downside in 2001, which now seems like a lifetime ago. I was freshfaced, often mistaken for one of the students (it’s the height!) and reasonably quiet. How things have changed - I have discovered wrinkles and grey hair, no-one thinks I could be a student anymore (despite still being smaller than most year 8s!) andI found my voice. It is with great sadness that I’m leaving, I’d planned to be evicted from my ‘office’ having completed a decade, but things change and you never know what the future holds. I’m leaving behind Futures Curriculum, but take with me lots of happy memories, having taught lots of amazing children and led wonderful fieldtrips - which I never thought I could do. I’ve worked with some wonderful staff, who have me helped me achieve some great things, mainly for your benefit. I hope I’ve made a difference and helped you to achieve your best. I wish you all well for the future and hope you’ll say ‘hello’ and that you did GCSE Geography!

Special thanks to Mr. Stares, which was an honor to work with. From him I learned a lot and I have achieved a lot of targets that before I didn’t realize they would be possible to reach. Thanks. I will never cease to thank you because you were the first to believe in me, for the support I received here at Downside Middle School. This is only a small thing compare to what you’ve done for me: Thank you!!! Luca
