ABOUT ME My desire to pursue architecture was sparked by the summer I spent with my uncles renovating my grandparents house. Having a grandfather in a wheel chair meant there were many adjustments that were made to improve his quality of life. It was the rewarding feeling of seeing something I helped build have such a meaningful impact on someone that lead me to pursue architecture as a career.

PROFESSIONAL GOALS As a professional I seek to improve the lives of people through well thought out and meaningful design. I plan to develop my technical and leadership skills to someday lead projects alongside other passionate designers.

Mixed Methods Peace Academy Senior Design Thesis | 2019

San Luis Obispo, CA | Fifth Year The Peace Academy is a summer learning program in San Luis Obispo looking to someday open a school that focuses on implementing nature into education and fostering more personalized learning methods. This program seeks to help children become active members in their society as well as act as global citizens. Its emphasis on implementing nature into learning is based on the positive impact it has on peoples focus, stress levels, and health. Classes are often taught outdoors, and various outdoor activities are part of the curriculum The idea of mixed methods is based on the principle of learning through problem solving. Using different subjects to investigate a topic encourages trial and error as well as iterative learning so children take the time to gain and improve their skills .

Program & Process The project is located on what was a 340 acre private residence with large agricultural space. The users planned to open a small k-12 school eventually. While these site plans show a developed master plan, this project focus’s on the Kindergarten through second grade space as this is likely what would be the first space to be built in a phased project. For this reason the space will be built on the building pad existing for the current residence while initial admin space will be located near the existing barn to take advantage of existing utilities. As the school grows it would expand deeper into the site providing more privacy and open space for older students.

Mixed Methods Vellum Show Piece “PEGS”

“Pegs” was submitted to the 2019 furniture competition in San Luis Obispo. This interactive and fun piece of furniture was designed to align with the concept and ultimate goals of “Mixed Methods Peace Academy”. The design is based off of a classic toy, a hammer and peg board. All the cylinders are hollowed out and weighted to balance with a corresponding member. As you push down one member, another piece will pop up using a system of custom balances below the table.

Biblio Bench

Design Build Studio | 2018-2019

Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo | Fourth Year Biblio Bench is a design build project in which myself and two others spent thirteen weeks planning, building, and installing a nineteen foot long seating area in front of Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library. Smaller, temporary installments were fairly common throughout the Architecture Department, however, we believed the entrance to the library was a valuable spot for this type of project, and we pushed to build outside of our department. The Library Board of Directors chose an engraved quote as they believed it would inspire students as they left or entered the library and gave them some creative input in the project. The bench is completely friction fit to its concrete base and should not leave any lasting marks on the site if removed. The seating material is composite decking that is recycled and manufactured in California. The Biblio Bench offers two tables to work or eat at, as well as a reclined area to rest facing away from the sun. The bench stays shaded until roughly 1 PM and is a great place for people to relax, have a conversation, and enjoy a break in the day.

In order to securely mount this project, dimensions of the concrete base were taken at every connection point and each member was welded to fit accordingly. The entire frame is galvanized in order to prevent rusting and Bituthene strips were added under the bench to prevent scratching. We met with the Library Board of Directors as well as Facilities Management to submit construction documents to apply for a permit. We received a conditional six month permit in 2019, which we were able to extend and the bench is still standing today.

Uplift

Permanent Supportive Housing | 2017

Los Angeles, CA | Third Year Uplift is a permanent supportive housing building for the chronically homeless in Skid Row, Los Angeles with street level commercial spaces. The design drivers for this project were self sustainability, security, and community for its residents. The program offers users secure housing as well as many community spaces for residents to recover, connect and grow, all while learning valuable skills. This project was a two person effort in which I played the role of digital and physical model maker while my parter primarily focused on render post production and general graphic design. Research, design and presentations were all collaborative efforts. AIA Integration Awards - Honorable Mention

The program strikes a balance between helping its residents re-acclimate from being homeless while also keeping the living and community spaces secure in Skid Row. Community spaces are designed for people to socialize and learn valuable skills, while a community garden, with an emphasis on herbs and spices, is used to help supply a tea shop on the street level. A portion of these proceeds would circulate back into the supportive housing and continue to help people get back on their feet.

The two main structural design elements driving this project are the large trusses on the ground floor and diagonal bracing members along the exterior of the building. The trusses elevate the building, giving it a stronger sense of security while also being inviting to people on the first floor to experience the commercial space. The high ceilings and light wells integrated into the courtyard space on the upper floor create a more naturally lit and inviting space. The cross framing supports the building’s primary circulation visually encouraging residents to take the stairwell and will improve their health over time.

Some major project challenges included: • Reviewing and complying with the Office of Historic Resources requirements. This included special approval for exterior light fixtures, signage, sight lines, and a glazing film on the interior of the building. • Filing for a “Request for Modification of building ordinances” as we could not update the site to have a proper accessible path from the accessible parking space to the building entrance without substantially shrinking the exterior of the building.

NICU Expansion

Providence Holy Cross | 2020

Boulder Associates Architects | Designer I Providence Holy Cross Medical Center requested a 6,200 sf expansion to their existing NICU space as well as a renovation to the nurse station and administration space of the well baby suite. This project will help reduce overloading on NICU staff, modernize an outdated space, and provide much needed storage space. My roles in this project: • Primary drafter throughout SD, DD, and CD phases • Coordinating and compiling drawings from the consultants and • Outlining items needed for OSHPD submittal and coordinating with Consultants to respond to OSHPD comments • Recording and distributing meeting minutes for design review and consultant meetings

Major project challenges included: • Project staff often could not properly observe infants from the central work station, and became uncomfortable sitting next to the NICU bays with a rolling chair and laptop. To solve this issue we created touch down stations between multiple NICU bays, as shown to the right, which allow nurses to comfortably observe patients closely and have a more functional work space. • During the Construction Documents phase the client decided they wanted to be able to open the Well Baby Suite renovation prior to the NICU expansion. This lead to us create a phased construction plan. As this project crosses over a corridor, we had to redesign our egress path and design temporary egress door and partition details.

UCLA MOB UCLA, Hampshire | 2020

Boulder Associates Architects | Designer I UCLA Health is developing a 16,263 sf tenant improvement to an existing two story Chase bank where a new healthcare facility will provide a primary care office as well as a GI procedure suite. One of the driving design fores in this project was the users request for an intimate space that also feels high end. This request was met by selecting warmer toned materials, using playful lighting, and creating variety in the ceiling plane. My roles in this project: • Assistant drafter throughout SD, DD, and CD phases • Primary contact with the City of Thousand Oaks Building department through plan check process • Assisting in the coordination the bidding process by compiling and sending out sets to contractors, responding to Bid RFI’s, and issuing the For Construction Set • Performing document management & distribution during construction administration • Responding to relevant RFI’s, Submittals and consultant and user responses

ADDRESS

CONSTR DOCUM

Some major project challenges included: • During the permitting process we were notified that although a new emergency generator was built and approved, there would need to be a separate permit for the enclosure surrounding the generator. We were able to prove that this generator would not impact the TI space and were able to start construction of the interior while the enclosure was still under review. • At the beginning of the Construction Administration phase, the client requested a complete redesign of our proposed stairwell. We were able to argue for an additional service fee and had to rush to design and coordinate with the contractor on a custom staircase in order to ensure we would create a major impact to the critical path.
