T
he watery city of Venice conjures up the
ideal of a romantic holiday. However , many people also visit to see the art, history and architecture the city also offers. The maze of canals running between renaissance architecture means the possibility of plenty of walking and exploring. Go for the famous Bridge of Sighs and the Rialto or to see St Mark’s Basilica in St Mark’s Square and drink coffee in one of the many cafes that surround it. Travel down the Grand Canal and over to the Lido where you can laze on a beach in the summer and swim in the sea.

Geography
V
enice consists of more than a hundred
tiny islets packed around the canals sitting in a lagoon where water levels rise each year. The quietest time of year is in the winter but be prepared for the cold – you can always include frequent hot chocolate stops in your itinerary to warm up! In February there is a Carnival and crowds ock in. Late spring and early summer as temperatures rise is the most popular time while mid-summer is generally considered to be too hot and can be smelly.

E
veryone who arrives in Venice comes to
the Piazzale Roma – the central transport hub where all buses, water-taxis, trains etc arrive. So whichever airport you arrive in you will find this is your first port of call. Once in Venice you can either take watertaxis which are considerably more expensive than water buses or walk. The waterbuses or vaporetti are an excellent way of seeing Venice. The routes they follow are clearly marked out and you can buy tickets for an entire day in advance. You can travel on them all along the Grand Canal – there are several landings on the way – and all the way over to the Lido.

The sights
S
t Mark’s Square can also be reached by
vaporetto. From where you land you will be able to see the Lido before entering the square to see St Mark’s Basilica and Campanile di San Marco. Go up the Campanile di San Marco to see a bird’s eye view of Venice. Have some of the world’s most expensive coffee when you get down before going into St Mark’s Basilica.
