REFERENCE CENTRE OF THE MILITARY DICTATORSHIP

REFERENCE CENTRE OF THE MILITARY DICTATORSHIP

In 1964, Brazil started a dictatorial period that would last until 1985, in which the power was under control of the military. Civil and political rights of the population were restricted and oppositors of the regime were persecuted, arrested, tortured and murdered. In those times, choosing to fight for democracy meant leading a dangerous life through winding paths. Considering that atrocities committed by the dictatorial power and people’s struggles for freedom cannot be forgotten, the Reference Centre of the Military Dictatorship is proposed as a space for collecting, restoring, cataloguing, digitizing and publishing documents, in order to be an open place accessible to the people, for debates and reflections regarding democracy. The site is located at the crossing of Brasilia’s Eixo Monumental (Monumental Axis) with the road that leads to the Setor Militar Urbano (Urban Military Sector). From the entrance at this milestone, by a reflecting pool, the building extends in the direction of the Juscelino Kubitschek Memorial, tracing a symbolic referential between the democratic times - represented by the former president Juscelino Kubitschek - and the dictatorial era of the military government.

The building is constituted by simple and modular elements. Large structural concrete porticoes, perfectly square-shaped, half-buried in the ground, are laid out vertically, defining a heavy body with a hidden interior, where darkness is predominant. Progressively, the porticoes become farther and farther apart, giving way for external light to penetrate. The inner part of the building houses apparently chaotic blocks, but which are built according to a rigorous modular system. Several events, programmes and exhibitions take place in this space. A straight walkway crosses the building. Alongside it are exhibited documents and playful materials. This path explores the alienation and apathy of those that avoided confrontation with the military regime. In contrast with this linear path, there is a second walkway, red in colour and winding, whose path runs through other parts of the building and gives access to the underground and, finally, reaches the cafĂŠ, the foyer and the amphitheatre, each of the three in a different exit. The two pathways that cross the building end and converge towards the Forgiveness Square, which lies beyond the porticoes. At this square, under a treetop, there is a bench for two people, signifying the indispensable dialogue.

IZAR HOUSE

IZAR HOUSE

This 370m² house located in Brasilia, Brazil is composed of 4 distinct blocks. At the ground floor are the services block and the social block. The latter is light and transparent with a glass box office inside, where it is possible to work in relative silence and still remain visually aware of everything. This stance was taken to give the family peace of mind - since they had just had their first child - and also to let them enjoy a privileged view from Brasilia’s skyline. At the top level, there is the intimate area, and underground a social space with a home theater, wine cellar, darts, snooker table, is softly illuminated by the light coming from the swimming pool underwater window.

This Project had a special constrain, the client kept proposing changes and modifications to the final design, so a space that could adapt - being playful for people who can get easily bored - was agreed upon. For instance on the office a big panel slide along the living room wall, enclosing the workplace into something more private, aiming to receive clients. This same panel can be positioned in a way to block the bathroom access, making it exclusive to the office. Still inside the office, a transversal panel can slide in rails on the ceiling to divide the space in two, creating a new room, available for visitors. The same device solution was employed on the top floor bedroom, a big room that can be split in different proportions. There’s also a system to make the home theater emerge from the dark underground area to the social space beside the pool, by means of a car hydraulic lifter.

RESTLESS SHAPE

Brasilia’s Culture and Crafts House is an initiative from the local community to convert a marginal space, forgotten by the authorities into public urban park to valorize the area, the project also includes a complex to capacitate artisans, promote their work and promotes environmental education.

RESTLESS SHAPE

The main edification appropriates of an abandoned concrete skeleton structure, lost in the bushes, it will receive a light and environmentally friendly roof made of bamboo. This roof is formed by series of bamboos separated by 1 meter between each one; joined by a compost fabric of recycled truck canvas welded with plastic for the waterproofing. Each bamboo is bent by an individual wire connected to its tip, All the wire is attached to a motor to a rail. This rail - controlled by a motor - slides in one axis along the building constantly pulling and releasing the wires, changing the bamboos arc, slowly and constantly, as an restless architecture, sculpting the coverage and the light it permits to enter. This mechanical system is controlled by a computer that considers the real time local weather conditions, and forecast and an user interface.

PROJECT SCRIPTS

RESTLESS SHAPE

A simulation of the Restless Shape was designed on grasshopper to test the shape and the user interface. On the UI is possible to freely shape the control lines, than the computer will evaluate the model - considering defined constraints to prevent fabric damage - and redrawn the lines.

Employee Social Assistance Center for the Construction Sector Headquarter A project of a pre-fabricated 1000m3 building. For the facade a parametric study for possibilities was carried out. That aimed on breaking up the dullness/monotony of the pre-fabricated structure. The facade was manufactured with 8mm fibro-cement painted plates.

MAMBEMBE

MICRO REVOLUTIONS - AA VISITING SCHOOL Netherlands Architecture Institute Garrido Boxe Association, São Paulo July 2010 Even under the viaducts, in some aspects the ones, who once were homeless, are still exposed to rain, being roofless. Many water leeks spread along the roof in Garrido’s Viaduct, as other places like that, those in-between spaces, forgotten by the authorities. The rain seems to be a simple problem, but it isn’t, limiting the possible uses, creating dangerous places when mixed with electricity and automobiles smoke, creating a humid and unhealthy area. It slowly destroys furniture, books, electronics, art, and in the case of Garrido, even memories. O Mambembe (the ordinary) is a possibility of modular expansive surface. Its shape can be easily controlled by wires, changing. In some places, it is a green wall with vessels; in others, is a water collecting roof. Made of PET bottles and simple cnc cut components, it’s light, cheap and adaptable, to be used below every other structure.

MATÉRIA PRIMA - AA VISITING SCHOOL Pimpolhos School of Samba Rio de Janeiro April 2011 Pimpolhos is a school of samba that does social work with children and The Slabs Creature is an installation made for them. At first sight it scares and at same time causes curiosity. From this curiosity, small movements can lead the children to learn to interact with it, to create a relationship. The Creature uses a webcam and computational vision to filter movement it detecs. This movement feeds an algorithm in Processing that gives it a humor status, like happy, sad, bored, anger, and so on. This status changes his movement pattern that is sent in real time by the Processing script through a circuit with an Arduino board that controls a hacked industrial crane in the warehouse were the Pimpolhos. This crane moves a 4.5m tall claw on real time “reacting” to its environment.
