GUEST EDITOR´S LETTER

SUSANNE BIRBRAGHER

SUSANNE BIRBRAGHER Firstly, I would like to thank Bazari’s Editor in Chief, Agustina Casas for inviting me to take part as Guest Editor in Miami’s Art Week special issue. It is an honor to share my personal highlights of Miami’s most exciting week as this annual event is very dear to my heart. LIAISONS, the company founded 8 years ago, precisely developed from working with Art Basel Miami Beach when its director Sam Keller asked for a Latin Party for the first edition of the art fair in Miami. Seventeen years later, the ArtNexus Party is still a signature event for the art revelers. In this issue you will find a piece on ArtNexus Magazine, the 42 year Latin American Art publication and its founder, editor and publisher Celia Birbragher, my mother and mentor, who is being honored at Pinta Art Fair this year. My event picks of the week are the opening of the new Atchugarry Art Center, where the 17th annual ArtNexus Party in benefit of the ArtNexus Foundation will take place, Anónimo Miami- a fundraising initiative by managing director Alejandra Martinez- taking place at Faena hosted by Alan Faena, with an exhibition curated by Ximena Caminos and Zoe Lukov. I personally look forward to it as it is a project I have been involved with since its inception five years ago. Not to be missed: the new murals in the Design District by Japanese street artists, Shun Sudo and Yusuke Ochiai, the champagne bar and great restaurants La Sireneuse and The Surf Club by Thomas Keller at the new Four Seasons, and the recently opened Valextra store in Bal Harbour Shops. I am fascinated by their design and craftsmanship. Last but not least, the issue will also share the story behind two of LIAISONS’ most successful and enduring initiatives: the EFG-ArtNexus Latin American Art Award, and Liaisons Art Experiences program. I can not wait to see you all around Miami’s most exciting week. Enjoy! Susanne Birbragher www.baszari.com

A TRIBUTE TO CELIA SRENDI DE BIRBRAGHER At Pinta Miami 2018 Is one of the most relevant and important fairs in the international and contemporary art scene. This year, it pays tribute to to Colombian director, researcher, critic, and patron of the arts Celia Sredni de Birbragher. A graduate of The University of The Andes with a degree in Fine Arts, Celia has been recognized for the commitment and dedication she has shown throughout her career with contemporary Latin American art; first, as ArtNexus editor and writer and later, as the creator of that organization’s foundation. A woman without borders, her passion has earned her numerous awards and has helped propagate the projects of emerging artists worldwide. Highlighting the contributions Ms. Sredni Birbragher has made during her forty year career is more than a pleasure for Pinta - it is a duty. Our team is proud to offer a space to one of the most outstanding collectors in the world of contemporary art. A figure in the guise and stature of Gertrude Stein, this Colombian patron of the arts has contributed - and is contributing - to the production and visualization of projects by artists from across the region. Her presence not only honors those of us who are part of this new edition of Pinta Miami, but also all those who have the pleasure of contemplating her enormous labor.

VALEXTRA Valextra Bal Harbor is a great example of Italian elegance Valextra is a brand for connoisseurs, Valextra in this new stage wants to reach a new connoisseur, how Valextra wants to transmit his Savoir Faire to a new generation eager for luxury products and with the best Italian artisan work as Valextra is? Valextra is known for its architecture and design inspired world. It translates in modern and sophisticated products with pure and graphic lines, structured forms, and beautiful engineered accessories. Its iconic “martellato” leather and “costa” finishing combined with a selection of 45 unique colors make any Valextra product recognizable at first glance. Beauty and functionality live with equal importance in each product: every detail has a functional reason to exist and every functional element has to embellish. As in the design world, the product has to last in time both esthetically and from a durability point of view, as an evergreen. The logo and the unique number are hidden in the inside of the product as a proof of authenticity as oppose to a self-celebration of the brand. Today Valextra explains its values thru creative collaborations with some of the most talented and acclaimed designers and architects of the world. Among others, Martino Gamper has collaborated with Valextra on several unique products, in the annual installation in Milan flagship store and in the co-creation of Venice store with his friend Laura Bethan Wood. Bethan has also created the collectible Toothpaste collection for SS18 that sold out in less than 2 months. The Jananese Architect Master Kengo Kuma created this year’s installation in Milan’s flagship store. Canadian designer Philippe Malouin was the designer of London’s store, the Chinese architects Neri&Hu of Chengdu. Many other collaborators include Michael Anastasiades, Bernard Dubois, Snarkitechure, David Adjaye, and many others. Max Lamb has created Valextra’s latest store just opened in Hong Kong and for Miami, Valextra selected the NY duo Aranda Lash. The shops are treated as Valextra’s townhouses around the world where to entertain our guests more than to sell our products: Places where to breath the values of the Valextra brand. With #nologomylogo Valextra want to take the customization to another level. What is the Leiv Motiv of this initiative? Valextra is a very graphic and a no logo brand. Its products are evergreen. As most pieces of design, they remain in the brand’s offer for a very long time if not for ever. Every year Valextra also enriches its offering with small collectables editions, very limited in number. With #NOLOGOMYLOGO, Valextra wanted to celebrate the individuality of each customer and the superior craftmanship of its artisans. Each client has the possibility to co-participate at the creation of their one-of-a-kind bag with their all-over initials pattern. This is Valextra sophisticated alternative at the overwhelming offer of brands’ monogrammed bags currently offered in the luxury market. It is the first time that a Company has offered this service, where a graphic designer creates your unique all-over monogram with the colors and size selected by the customer and each bag is produced one by one by our artisans, as a pure bespoke. It is the celebration of unicity of each individual, of graphic sophisticated esthetics and of craftmanship. Valextra Bal Harbor is the Flagship Store of the brand in the USA. What’s new for Valextra Bal Harbor this season? Valextra opened its first store in Miami, the mecca of design, in June of this year. To celebrate this opening, Valextra asked the NY architects duo Aranda Lash to come up with a very distinctive concept for Bal Harbour where the products would be presented in a “gallery” style environment. The product offering combines the most iconic Valextra products with the collectable Enchanted Forest Collection inspired by Kengo Kuma’s work in Milan. An exclusive release is planned for Miami Basel 2018.

ANĂ“NIMO A non-profit cultural platform that promotes contemporary Mexican and Latin American A non-profit initiative that promotes the acquisition of art as a free process of preconceived ideas, motivated only by the connection generated by an anonymous piece. In Anonymous, the omission of the author of each exhibited piece is the main element of the discourse. During the exhibition and auction, the name of the artist of each lot is kept hidden, revealing until the piece is sold at the highest bid. OBJECTIVE Anonymous aims to materialize the discourse on the re-appreciation and re-appreciation of the work of art as an object of intrinsic value vs. object of economic value (face value vs. economic value). By eliminating the authorship factor, an attempt is made to create an anonymous buying-selling scenario. With the mission that the public manages to initiate conversations with each work, free of preconceived ideas about its author and, therefore, acquire pieces of art with a personal and emotional intention, independent of the economic market of supply / demand. MISSION With three successful editions in Miami during the art week, Anonymous proposes a different buying and selling scenario that, with each edition, has been raising funds for social and cultural causes by promoting all kinds of collecting. Thus, with the mission of continuing to generate spaces where the public can engage in fresh and unintimidating conversations with each work, piece or object of art, Anonymous seeks to continue promoting the Mexican and Latin American art industry by expanding its map to Mexico City, Los Angeles and New York.

PIERO ATCHUGARRY GALLERY For the opening of its second location in the North of the Design District in Miami, the Piero Atchugarry Gallery is very please to present the group show “Tension and Dynamism.” Presenting artworks by Pablo Atchugarry, Riccardo de Marchi, Artur Lescher, Tulio Pinto, Arcangelo Sassolino and Veronica Vazquez. The exhibition will take over the 9,000 square feet exhibition space and offer a unique and immersive experience into the gallery aesthetic. Since its opening in 2013 the gallery has developed and put together a precise artistic vision bringing together post-minimalism and conceptual sensibilities, and it is now proud to work with an international team of contemporary artists. “Tension and Dynamism” will focus on each artist’s exclusive use of materials, their search for reduced and essential forms, and the artworks dynamic dialogue with the exceptional space of the gallery. Riccardo de Marchi (born in 1964) and Arcangelo Sassolino (born in 1967) are both working and living in Northern Italy, yet each have developed an uncommon artistic practice. De Marchi investigates the qualities of aluminum, stainless steel and plexiglass through tension created by the absence or presence of the material. His code, a universal language or alphabet, propels the viewer into a new spatial universe. Sassolino’s sculptures and installations explore mechanical behavior as well as the mechanical and physical properties of force. In his works the tension anticipation and awareness of risk are combined with a powerful aesthetic, directed toward the viewer’s experience. Three Uruguayan artists, whose artistic practices are each influenced by the legacy of Joaquin Torres-Garcia, will be presented. Pablo Atchugarry (born in 1954), the world renown marble sculptor, has been ceaselessly creating biomorphic abstractions and pushing the material to its very limits over the last forty years. The imposing yet delicate pieces weaved together light and shadow through the hand-carved multiple folds. Marco Maggi (born in 1957) approaches paper and aluminum on a macro level, thus inviting the viewer to get closer in order to observe the artwork. The multitude of tiny objects arranged together deploy a topographic map of detail linked to daily life, transporting the viewer both in a microscopic visual world and in an intellectual and contemplative one. Veronica Vazquez (born in 1970) combines found materials such as iron, fabric, cardboard, paper and wire in a visual dialogue which unprecedented rhythm guides the viewer eyes and heart. Decaying materials poetically adjusted together face the viewer with matter and memory, and ultimately toward a confrontation with his own mortality. Finally two sculptors from Brazil namely Artur Lescher and Tulio Pinto will present installations with glass, metal, wood and felt; exploring the contrast between machinelike and natural materials. Artur Lescher (born in 1962) makes constant references to natural elements in his perfect industrially fabricated works. While testing the physical qualities and objective characteristics of material, he reaches new aesthetics peaks combining strength and instability, balance and movement, tension and silence. Tulio Pinto (born in 1974) explores the subtle balance between weight and matter through glass, iron and soil. His works activate the material, the space it inhabits and the viewer, to create metaphors on the unstable equilibrium of human interactions catalyzing a place of experience and reflection for the viewer. SUE HOSTETLER

Vanity Fair photo critic Vicki Goldberg contributed an essay about the photographs. Charitable auctions at Sotheby’s in New York and Butterfield’s in San Francisco (organized by Sue in conjunction with publication) benefited the Natural Resources Defense Council. In 2005 and 2006, Sue served as the executive editor on a book compiled by the not-for-profit media foundation World Heritage Project on the UN-designated World Heritage Sites in India, working with world-renowned photographers such as Mary Ellen Mark, Sally Mann, Jim Natchwey, Steve McCurry, Lynn Davis, Michel Comte and Antonin Kratochvil. Other projects have included “Individuals: Portraits from the Gap Collection” (Melcher Media, 2006), “American Beauties” (DK Melcher Media, 2005), “The Lucky (Magazine) Shopping Manual” (Gotham Books, 2003), “100 Years of Harley -Davidson” (Bulfinch, 2002), “Fifty Years of TV Guide” (Crown, 2002) and a custom made, limited edition book for Rolex Watches (2004). She sits on the board of several institutions and charitable organizations, including Ballroom Marfa in Marfa, Texas, the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Aspen, Colorado where she is Chair of the Board, The Aspen Country Day School and is a former member of the International Center of Photography in New York City. She is also a member of the Institute of International Education’s New Leaders Group, the UN organization that administers the Fulbright Program, as well as a member of the Aspen Institute’s Society of Fellows. All three Art Basel fairs- Switzerland, Miami Beach and Hong Kong— have their own distinct vibe and crowd. Miami, in my opinion, is the most vibrant, daring, ambitious..and frankly, fun! This year I’m most looking forward to work by artists formerly considered outsider or on the margins...many of whom are self-taught. This work, being shown at the main fair at the convention center, as well as at the MOCA AfriCOBA exhibition, is redefining and expanding the parameters of the contemporary art world. Also of immense interest is the feminist icon Judy Chicago’s retrospective at the ICA. And always one of my favorite stops is the Rubell Family Collection, which this year is including the work of Viennese artist Rudolf Polanzsky. Also don’t miss the Haas Brothers show at the Bass Museum and the celebration around the 35th anniversary of Jeanne-Claude and Christo’s epic “Surrounded Islands” exhibition at PAMM. This week always reminds me how much art, in every form and discipline, elevates and enriches our lives. DIRECTION by AGUSTINA CASAS SERE - LEGUIZAMON

JOSÉ LAGARDES Designer, Marketer and CEO of Fashion A Young man who discovered his passion for design when he was 17 years old whilst working at the sewing studio of his father Cristian Lagares. Here he became aware of how the pieces were made and the design process. After studying Marketing at the Universidad Iberoamericana UNIBE and obtaining a Masters degree in Fashion Product Management and Management at the Instituto Europeo di design (IED) in Madrid, he learned fashion techniques from distinguished Fashion houses such as Loewe and Adolfo Domínguez. Today these experiences are being applied in their new collections so they will have a more international approach. His innate talent in 2008 made him create his first collection and runway show called “Escencia Tropical” in which it was the first time that the brand Cristian Lagares chose to have feminine designs. There Jose Cristian began his career as a designer under the line of his father, thus creating and presenting collections and participating in the fashion weeks in the Dominican Republic. What inspires you? Traveling is my biggest source of inspiration, this is why I’m constantly on the go! Seeing every country and it’s culture always fills me up with new ideas How do you proyect JCL in a future?
