Welcome to Wichita, colloquially known as the ICT. As a third-generation real estate professional and a natural-born social butterfly, I love exploring our city through the eyes of a tourist. But it doesn’t stop there. There are several incredible gems just outside our city limits. Happy exploring!

BARTLETT ARBORETUM Located in Belle Plaine and established in 1910, you can view 64 different trees and endless amounts of flowers. It’s a great place for weddings, concerts, benefits and a farmers’ market. CY’S HOOF AND HORN Located in downtown Sedgwick, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another restaurant that offers exceptional homemade meals like Cy’s. Home cooking at its finest! ELDERSLIE FARM A true farm-to-table dining experience located in Kechi. You can enjoy brunch, dinner, a creamery that utilizes traditional methods to produce fine cheeses, and even pick your own blackberries.

2022

GRACE HILL WINERY Whitewater, Kansas, is a lot closer than Napa, but don’t fret... You’ll feel like you’re on the West Coast when you arrive at this winery. They offer a ton of events, live music on Fridays and options for tastings. You can even participate in harvest every August through September! GREAT PLAINS NATURE CENTER A nature preserve in the middle of the city, The Chisholm Creek Park is a natural oasis and is the largest in Wichita at 282 acres! This is my favorite place to ride bikes or explore the miles of paved trails. HOORAY RANCH If you’re an avid hunter or wildlife enthusiast, the short drive to Kingman is worth it. The ranch boasts over 20,000 acres of intensively managed prime wildlife habitat. They offer several kinds of hunts and facilities for private events.

KANSAS STAR CASINO This casino, located in Mulvane, is the perfect spot for a date night or getaway. With several restaurants, a hotel and a full calendar of events, get ready to be entertained. LUCIANO’S I’ve tried a lot of Italian food in my time and this gem in Mulvane is as close as you can get to a handmade dish from Italy. The traditional cuisine is matched by a genuine ambiance, complete with live music. SHINDIGS BAR & GRILL This isn’t just another restaurant, it’s an experience. The decor, architecture and ambiance of this former railroad freight station in Winfield are one of a kind. Situated right next to a railroad, the views from the second story deck are charming!

Whether you have moved into one of Wichita’s historic, classic neighborhoods or into one of the incredible suburbs, you now live in the thriving Greater Wichita area. My wife and I grew up here. We moved away temporarily for work. After coming back, we couldn’t imagine leaving again. This city is on the verge of something BIG. Between the booming downtown area consisting of new restaurants, new businesses and new entertainment, like our brand-new $80 million Riverfront Stadium, there is something for everyone. We encourage you to get out and explore our city, whether you moved across town or moved into town. Explore our city like you would as a tourist and support local. To get a small idea of what you could find: ▸ Arkansas River, protected by our guardian, The Keeper of the Plains ▸ 126 parks, including Sedgwick County Park, OJ Watson Park, and Naftzger Park to name a few ▸ Over 100 miles of bike paths including along the river

▸ Nine breweries, a taproom, two wineries, a vineyard and a distillery Take the time to explore and then get involved. There are numerous organizations you can get plugged into immediately and start making an impact. Make this city your own. Together we can continue to push Wichita forward and make it a better place, not just for us, but for our kids and for generations to come. WELCOME HOME. In fact, why don’t you just introduce yourself to everyone you meet? Let them know you just moved to the neighborhood, see what information pops up that you might be interested in. A neighborhood book club maybe?

Explore your new neighborhood’s coffee shop, brunch spot or bookstore, and give someone a sincere compliment. Ain’t no shame in the tribe-building game. When sparks fly from it, you know it’s a friendship fit!

No matter if you’re new to town, or just new to your neighborhood, the transitions that come with moving can be a challenge. The logistics of figuring out what is where in the grocery aisle of your new grocery store can be enough to make you sweat, let alone figuring out your new route to work, while dropping the kids off at school beforehand and trying to get everywhere on time. Add all of this to trying to keep up with your workload and perform at your highest level and woof! Life is a lot sometimes. One thing that can reduce your stress levels? Building your very own tribe of women who are in a similar season of life as you. Are you a mama? As much as you love your single girls, you need friends that are with kids too so that you don’t feel like the crazy one all the time! Busy building a business? Surround yourself with other entrepreneurs who can tell you the best accounting software to go with, their content batching tricks or how they create boundaries to avoid

burnout. If you’re climbing the corporate ladder, find some women who can swing the 45-minute lunch date because they know you’re not going to get a mani with them in the middle of the day. It doesn’t matter whether you’re single or married, climbing the corporate ladder or building your own business, doing a nap-time freelance hustle or working remotely full time, we all need likeminded people in our daily life to keep us sane and help to normalize what we’re going through. We need women to celebrate with, to call when we want a quick second opinion or to commiserate with when the day has been rough. Sometimes, we also need them to bring wine, so bonus points if you find a friend with good taste in pinot noir. HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU BUILD YOUR BENCH OF LIKE-MINDED LADIES: Introduce yourself to your neighbors. You never know who you will find before the door. It might just be your (or your kids’) new bestie. Seriously, this happens!

Introduce yourself to the parents at your kids’ school or soccer team. This one is easy. You already know you have one thing in common – kids! See someone on social media who is doing something cool? Message them and grab coffee! This is one of the best ways to build your tribe and one of my all-time favorite ways to meet cool women in Wichita. Consider joining The Thread where you’ll meet a variety of career-focused women from all different backgrounds who are ambitious about hitting their goals and building their community. Find out more information visit thethreadwlc.com or find us on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn at @thethread. Before you know it, you’ll settle into a new routine and the logistics of daily life will be on autopilot. Then you and your girlfriends will fall into a routine of happy hour at your favorite spot or a quick mid-day coffee break. You’ll have a tribe to lean on, to support, to laugh with and to let down the walls with. And, trust me, you’ll feel more at home than ever.

12 THINGS

TO DO WHEN YOU MOVE Moving into a new home is such an exciting time! However, from the moment you decided to move, to closing day and beyond, your to-do list can seem a mile long. Here are 12 things you can make sure to do while settling into your new home.

LOCAL > MOVING TIPS

SECURITY CHECK! CHANGE OUT YOUR LOCKS, AND REPROGRAM YOUR GARAGE DOOR OPENERS. There’s no telling who has a key to your home or an extra opener. Get new locks and have your garage doors reprogrammed so they only work with the remotes you have. Smartlocks are a convenient choice as they can be controlled and monitored from your phone. A home security system and invisible fence for our four-legged family members are also a part of the security checklist. And, remember to check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as well as locate the water shut-off valve. INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO YOUR NEIGHBORS This one may seem difficult, especially if you’re an introvert, but walking around to the five houses to the left and right of you (and anyone directly behind you) is a good way to get a feel for the neighborhood and who lives around you. Plus, you never know if you might find that perfect babysitter or new friend that lives next door! CONFIRM ALL UTILITIES, TRASH, CABLE AND INTERNET HAVE BEEN TRANSFERRED. A good REALTOR® will remind you to do this before closing, but it’s not a bad idea to double-check. PLAN YOUR COMMUTE TO WORK. This is probably something you’ve thought about before making an offer, but now that you’re moved in, it’s wise to drive around and get a feel for the lay of the land. Make sure to check the main thoroughfares for any construction closures and how long it takes with and without traffic. GET A PROFESSIONAL DEEP CLEAN, INCLUDING CARPETS. While many homes look pretty clean, you can’t be sure just by looking. It’s best to have this done before you move in. Have you thought about trash bin cleaning? There’s several local companies that can clean your stinky bins!

7 8 9 10 11

SCOPE OUT THE GROCERY STORES AND LOCAL SHOPPING. While you’re driving around, make sure to find your closest gas station, grocery store, pharmacy and car wash. Of course Google will tell you, but nothing beats actually driving there and remembering where everything is. RESEARCH AND JOIN A LOCAL SOCIAL GROUP. Chances are that your neighborhood has a Facebook or NextDoor page, which are great ways to connect with your new neighbors. Stop by Visit Wichita, City Hall meetings, or get a library card. If you want to branch out a little, reach out to US! We’d be happy to help you get plugged into a variety of groups. VISIT THE DMV. No matter where you’ve moved from, you will eventually need to update the address on your driver’s license. Be sure to update your voter registration, too! Visit ksrevenue.org for all the requirements. FIND NEW HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN YOUR NETWORK. If you’ve moved from a different city or state, it may be a good idea to ask your former family physician if they have any recommendations in Wichita. UNDERSTAND HOW THE KANSAS CLIMATE CAN IMPACT YOUR YARD. If you’re new to Kansas, it’s important to understand how our weather affects many things, like grass, planting, pruning and sprinkler blowouts.

CHANGE YOUR ADDRESS WITH THE POST OFFICE AND ALL ONLINE SHOPPING SITES. Let’s face it... Driving to your old address to pick up an Amazon package is a pain. It’s better to update your address with USPS and Amazon as soon as you close on your home. Be sure to let your friends and any other companies you receive mail from know your new address.

Weather SEVERE

“Being in the central U.S., Kansas has a wide variety of fast-changing weather brought in by the fresh breezes of the Plains. On average in Wichita, one can expect around 15 inches of snow, 10 days above 100 degrees, and almost 35 inches of rain per year. Ranchers burning the Flint Hills, which are northeast of town, create a spectacular scene at night during the spring.

IN KANSAS

Kansas is also widely known for its severe weather and tornadoes. On average, the state of Kansas sees just under 100 tornadoes per year and hundreds of severe storms. The peak months for severe weather are April, May and June in Wichita. As a result, weather knowledge and safety are very important. No matter where you live, make sure you go to ready.gov for the latest information on weather safety kits and protecting you and your family. As much as severe weather is a significant threat, would you have guessed that flooding is the number-one killer? If you approach a flooded road, remember that it only takes a foot or two of rushing water to float most vehicles. Instead, turn around, don’t drown.” KEN COOK Meteorologist in Charge National Weather Service 18 BeLocal

T rnado PREPARATION

TORNADOES ARE VIOLENT; THEY CAN COMPLETELY DESTROY WELL-MADE STRUCTURES, UPROOT TREES AND HURL OBJECTS THROUGH THE AIR LIKE DEADLY MISSILES. Not only were there no tornadoes in 2020, there were no tornado watches issued by the Wichita office. To put the sleepy 2020 in perspective, Kansas has averaged 94 tornadoes a year over the past decade and 89 over the past 30 years. The Sunflower State hadn’t logged such a low tornado total since 14 in 1976 and 16 in 1977.

PREPARE IN ADVANCE

▸ Assemble an emergency preparedness kit, including medications, medical supplies, food (remember the pets food too) and water ▸ Talk about tornadoes with your family so that everyone knows where to go when a warning is issued ▸ Check your workplace and schools/ daycares to learn about their tornado emergency plans ▸ Stay informed about your community’s risk and response plans ▸ Ensure each family member knows how to get back in touch if you are separated during an emergency ▸ Make a list of items to bring inside in the event of a storm

RIGHT BEFORE A TORNADO

▸ Listen to the radio or watch local news channels ▸ Move to an underground shelter, basement or safe room. If none are available, a small windowless interior room or hallway on the lowest level is the safest alternative ▸ Familiarize yourself with the local emergency shelter and how to get there American Red Cross of South Central and Southeast Kansas, 707 N. Main, 316-219-4000

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!

▸ A tornado WATCH means a tornado is possible. ▸ A tornado WARNING means a tornado is already occurring or will occur soon. GO TO YOUR SAFE PLACE IMMEDIATELY. *source: redcross.org

FUN FACT The Keeper of the Plains is the 12th tallest statue in the U.S.

By DRONE-TOGRAPHY

Archaeological evidence indicates human habitation near the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers, the site of present-day Wichita, as early as 3000 B.C. In 1541, a Spanish expedition led by explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado found the area populated by the Quivira, or Wichita, people. Conflict with the Osage in the 1750s drove the Wichita further south. Prior to European settlement of the region, the site was in the territory of the Kiowa. 20 BeLocal

Wichita began as a trading post on the Chisholm Trail in the 1860s and was formerly incorporated as a city on July 21st, 1870. It became a destination for cattle drives traveling north from Texas to access railroads which led to markets in eastern U.S. cities. This earned the nickname “Cowtown.” The original stimulus to the City’s economic development was the extension of the Santa Fe Railway into Wichita in 1872. 2022

Fairmount College, which eventually grew into Wichita State University, opened in 1886. Garfield University, which eventually became Friends University, opened in 1887. A.A. Hyde discovered Mentholatum in 1894 in the current The Spice Merchant & Company building. During the 1890s, the grain produced from the farms in the region more than equaled the wealth formerly generated by the cattle trade, and Wichita became a trade and milling center. In the early 1900s, Kansas had as many grapevines planted in fields as the Napa Valley! Sporting goods and camping gear retailer Coleman started in the city in the early 1900s. In 1903, Kansas became known as the Sunflower State. Early settlers admired the

In the 1920s and 1930s, businessmen and aeronautical engineers established aircraft manufacturing companies in Wichita, including Beechcraft, Cessna, and Stearman Aircraft. The city became an aircraft production hub known as “The Air Capital of the World.” During World War II, the city experienced a population explosion during the war when it became a major manufacturing center for the Boeing B-29 bomber. In 1951, the U.S. Air Force announced plans to assume control of the airport to establish McConnell Air Force Base. A number of fast-food franchises started in Wichita, beginning with White

Castle in 1921 and followed by many more in the 1950s and 1960s including Pizza Hut in 1958. Wichita has long been known as a center of entrepreneurship. Koch Industries and Cargill, the two largest privately held companies in the United States, both operate headquarters in Wichita. Other firms with headquarters in Wichita include roller-coaster manufacturer Chance Rides, gourmet food retailer Dean & Deluca and renewable energy company Alternative Energy Solutions. EAST VS. WEST It won’t take you long to figure out there is an unspoken divide between “east-siders” and “west-siders.” But what is the origination of this divide? It all started with Wichita’s position on the Chisholm Trail. Across the Arkansas River, the town of Delano became an entertainment destination for cattlemen thanks to its saloons, brothels, and lack of law enforcement. The area had a reputation for violence until local lawmen, Wyatt Earp, began to assertively police the cowboys. By the middle of the decade, the cattle trade had moved west to Dodge City. Wichita annexed Delano in 1880. Translation: Anything west of the river became known as the “west side,” which carried a negative connotation. That mindset stuck and has been perpetuated for over 150 years! And the rest, as they say, is history!

he Wichita community is known and loved by many, including Miss Kansas 2019 and 2020, Annika Wooton. Annika moved to Wichita for her term as Miss Kansas and adores Wichita just as much as we all do. When asked what some of her favorite things to do here in town are, she said that live music events at venues such as Mort’s, Vorshay’s and Cleveland Corner make for a good time (and we agree). Annika comes from an arts background and is both locally and nationally known for her speed painting. In fact, her 90-second speed painting performance of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg won her a talent award at Miss America and the painting. Not only was it a huge hit with the organization, but Annika also received a personal message from RBG’s trainer, who said “I showed it to the Justice. She watched and was wondering what she is doing, and I told her to just wait for it. When you finished and turned it over, she said, ‘OH MY GOD – WOW. How did she do that, and did she have lines to follow!?” Coming from one of her idols, this meant so much to Annika. Now that her term as Miss Kansas is complete, she is the interim Executive Director of The Kansas Alliance for the Arts in Education. She understands well that every single piece of

22 BeLocal

technology, clothing, architecture, and advertisement that exists, once went through the hands of an artist or a creative thinker. She wants to ensure that preserving the arts in our schools and community (as well as others) is a focus. In her spare time, she loves to sit on her porch, spend time with her boyfriend and travel. Aside from arts, Annika has a true passion for having an impact on community, which she says was one of the most rewarding aspects of competing in pageants. Her favorite thing about Wichita is: “It has a city vibe that still feels like a community. We are hustling and expanding. There is so much to do here no matter what your interests are, and yet you still see familiar faces everywhere you go. I love that.” She’s a big fan of surrounding yourself with a team and a community that supports you and your goals, and Wichita is a great place to do that. She says to: “Chase your goals. Take every opportunity, connection, networking event, etc. There are so many ways to succeed here. You’re going to shut doors if you don’t take the opportunities that come your way.” One thing is for certain, and Annika knows it well. The Wichita community is full of opportunities, and that’s one of the reasons we love it so much.

EVERYDAY HERO

Written by Ashley Streight Photography by Thomas Buchanan

DAL GAINS in mechanical engineering and worked at Cessna for a short time, it was in his heart to serve others, which is why he decided to earn his associate degree in Fire Science. Being a firefighter was something that was always in the background. At just 22 years old, he was hired by the Wichita Fire Department and has been there ever since. He says, “The job is tough, but it’s extremely rewarding and worth every second.”

It’s no secret that we love our Wichita community and could not be more thankful for our everyday heroes, just like Dal Gains. Dal has been a firefighter for 11 years in Wichita, and he’s also on the rescue team, which requires specialized training. But that’s not all. Dal is on the peer support team, which is dedicated to helping his peers who may be struggling emotionally after calls, etc. On top of all of this, he’s also a medic for a specialized team with the Wichita Police Department and is on call 24/7. “If you want to be a fireman, know that you are going to sacrifice. You will sacrifice time away from loved ones, your physical being, and your emotional health, but the sacrifice is worth the reward of helping others.” His service to our community is something we are so grateful for. Dal has always had a passion for helping people. Though he originally majored 34 BeLocal

When it comes to people he looks up to, there have been many. Every captain he’s had on the fire department has taught him something different, and he says he’s lucky to be around them all. Aside from his incredible career serving Wichita and surrounding areas, he co-owns Valhalla Barbell Club, does real estate appraisals and coaches at the gym. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology, which assists him in his coaching. In the past, he has competed in powerlifting, and he currently participates in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In his spare time, he does a lot of reading and enjoys deer hunting in the fall. Dal wants to always be remembered as the guy that people can rely on. He says that’s why he got on the team, why he began coaching and more. He says, “Enjoy where you’re at right now and embrace it. With this career, know that it’s a give and take. You have to sacrifice to give to others, but what you get back is worth the sacrifice.” It’s this mentality that keeps him going. After talking to Dal, it’s clear that we are lucky to have him as a Wichita firefighter and much more. He is a true local hero. 2022

LOCAL > TEEN PERSPECTIVE

This summer, WSU held Camp Destination Innovation, whose mission is to facilitate pathways for marginalized youth to achieve economic success, as well as creating impactful and forward-thinking innovations in support of the Wichita community. And let us tell you, the first-place winner of the Trade Show at the end of camp is someone to look out for in the future of business in Wichita. Joyce Davis, a Wichita native at only 14 years old, not only won the competition, but the camp director was so impressed by her business plan that she was asked to present it at 1 Million Cups at Grover Labs. Joyce’s business plan? It’s called JM’s Quick Response, which is a marketing strategy for restaurants to incorporate into each and every item on their menu. When you go out to eat, you look at the menu and there is a description of each item. But, what’s in those meals? That’s where Joyce’s idea comes into play. With JM’s Quick Response, a QR code is placed next to every item on the menu with a detailed description of every 2022

ingredient that goes into it. Who does this benefit? Everyone. Why? It keeps people from having to bring the waiter or waitress back to the table multiple times to answer questions. It also helps those with food allergies and more to know exactly what’s in their meal before the order is placed.

in the room and can see why she won first place at the competition. Joyce is one-of-a-kind. She is sweet, genuine, hard-working, courageous, adventurous, extremely talented and so much more. We can’t wait to see where her future takes her!

That’s not all there is to Joyce, though. She’s also a rising star on TikTok, with over 85,000 followers and 1.2 million views on her videos already. WOW! Her page is dedicated to her recreating meals from shows on Disney and Nickelodeon, which stems from her love for cooking and creating recipes. It’s amazing to see how creative our local youth can be, and Joyce’s talents are far beyond her years. Aside from cooking and continuing to grow her social media presence and business idea, she loves to travel and hang out with friends and family. When we heard her business idea at 1 Million Cups this month, we were just as blown away as everyone else

Did you know there are more victims held against their will today than ever before? That’s why The N2 Company – the company behind this publication and 850+ others like it – is financially committed to end human trafficking.

FOR EVERY AD WE SELL, N2 DONATES ENOUGH MONEY TO FREE 2 SLAVES FROM CAPTIVITY. The average Fortune 500 company donates about 1% of their profits to charity. The N2 Company donates more than 2% of their gross revenue.

Thanks to the businesses within these pages, our Area Directors, and readers like you, we’re able to break the chains of this horrible reality.

DONATED THIS YEAR TO HELP END MODERN-DAY SLAVERY. 46 BeLocal
