Improvisation with soloists of the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) Anna Thorvaldsdottir Enigma for string quartet with 360-degree video by Sigurður Guðjónsson Swiss premiere CHF 50
Telescope meets microscope: let’s shake up the relationship between outside and inside, between macrocosm and microcosm! Under the massive planetarium dome at the Swiss Museum of Transport, you will zoom into the infinite expanses of the universe, accompanied by improvisations. Sigurður Guðjónsson’s immersive 360-degree video Enigma also makes visible what is normally hidden from the human eye: with the help of an electron microscope, Guðjónsson scans the surface of a carbon fragment — suggestive images reminiscent of Martian landscapes. In tandem with the sounds of Anna Thorvaldsdottir, which oscillate subtly between flow and fragmentation, they combine to form a hypnotizing Gesamtkunstwerk.
Sat 19.11. Concert 2
Patricia Kopatchinskaja © Alexandra Muravyeva
18.30 KKL Luzern, Concert Hall Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) Patricia Kopatchinskaja violin Tito Muñoz conductor Markus Güdel lighting design “In Search of György Ligeti’s Lost Melody” 75 min
György Ligeti Violin Concerto Alternating with: Cantabile, molto legato from Musica ricercata for Piano Allegro grazioso from the Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet Vivacissimo molto ritmico from the Trio for Violin, Horn, and Piano Guillaume de Machaut Hoquetus David Kyrie from the Messe de Nostre-Dame World premieres of new works by Alessandro Baticci, Anton Koshelev and other composers Commissioned by Lucerne Festival CHF 100/50
“A song sleeps in all things,” says the poet. In György Ligeti’s case, a folksong-like melody runs through his work like an idée fixe. It appears, with touchingly transparent purity, in the second movement of his Violin Concerto. But it can also be found in other works, such as the early piano cycle Musica ricercata. Why did Ligeti return to this melody again and again? Does its fragile beauty point to biographical events, to experiences of war and the Holocaust, to which Ligeti’s family almost entirely fell victim? Patricia Kopatchinskaja explores these questions in a concert collage constructed around Ligeti’s Violin Concerto — including four world premieres that musically set out in search of Ligeti’s lost melody.
Sat 19.11. Concert 3 — Late Night 21.00 Neubad

Lucerne Festival Forward plays not only in the KKL Luzern but throughout the city. The Festival begins in the planetarium at the Swiss Museum of Transport and, for this Late Night event, explores the sonic possibilities of the Neubad, a former public swimming pool. Musicians of the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) will transform the building into a spatial score, into a sequence of musical events, and even into an instrument. The journey leads through the entire Neubad to the central pool. Precisely notated scores, open playing instructions, and group improvisation guided by interactions with the audience will converge, linked by the “white noise” of everyday sounds, to create an expressive sonic journey towards silence.
Sun 20.11. Concert 4 18.30 KKL Luzern, Concert Hall Ensemble of the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) Tito Muñoz conductor Unsuk Chin © Priska Ketterer
“Imagined Folklore” 75 min
Unsuk Chin Gougalōn (Scenes from a Street Theater) for ensemble alternating with commissioned works written especially for this concert and other pieces Peter Allamand/Urban Mäder/ Pia Matthes/Nora Vetter Ein sauberes Ende (“A Clean End”): a collective intervention CHF 50
Join In: Register to participate in the action Ein sauberes Ende starting 1 August at lucernefestival.ch/acleanend
Unsuk Chin has described her 2009 ensemble piece Gougalōn as “imaginary folklore” that is “stylized and only apparently primitive.” She was inspired by a childhood memory: the amateur performances of street theater groups in South Korea in the 1960s — large-scale events in which the entire village took part. The musicians of the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) intertwine Gougalōn’s six movements with recent works that expand the traditional concept of concert performance with theatrical, experimental approaches, including two world premieres. And at the culmination of this event, “the whole village” gathers together for the collaborative project A Clean End, in which anyone can participate.
Sun 20.11. Children’s Concert 13.00 and 14.15 KKL Luzern, Rehearsal Hall free admission | tickets available starting 1 September only from kultissimo.ch
“Whoaaa, Doodles Can Sound Like THAT?!!” A workshop concert for children from 4 to 7 years old with soloists of the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO), conceived by Nicolee Kuester 40 min
LUCERNE FESTIVAL FORWARD Every year in November, Lucerne Festival Forward offers contemporary music a platform and gives a voice to the musicians of the younger generation. It all starts out from the idea of using the international network of the Lucerne Festival Academy, which has grown over the years and now comprises more than 1,200 artists, as a collective mastermind. And this is the case in several respects. The concerts are not only prepared and presented by the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO), our orchestra of excellence for the performance of new and contemporary music. Selected Contemporary Leaders from the Academy network also participate to develop the program as curators. In doing so, they take new approaches to closing the gap
between so-called “new music” and the audience: they seek out contact with listeners, experiment with unusual concert formats, focus on lesser-known voices and aesthetic positions with respect to the creation of contemporary music, and purposefully mix nationalities, generations, and genders. Lucerne Festival Contemporary Leaders: Chloë Abbott | Jack Adler-McKean | Cecilia Bercovich | Ettore Biagi | Winnie Huang | Helga Karen | Edward Kass | Marina Kifferstein | Angus Lee | Alex Lipowski | Stephen Menotti | Benjamin Mitchell | Ben Roidl-Ward | Michelle Ross | James Austin Smith | Nathan Watts | Johanna Wu | Andrew Zhou Responsible for Lucerne Festival: Felix Heri and Mark Sattler
THANK YOU! New music experiences need strong partners with vision. We sincerely thank our partners for their forward-looking commitment!

LUCERNE FESTIVAL FRIENDS We love classical music. We are passionate about outstanding performances of both traditional and contemporary repertoire. Communication between artists and the audience as well as between generations is important to us. That is why we support one of the most important music festivals in the world. The Friends have been an indispensable partner of Lucerne Festival for more than 50 years. Through our personal commitment and annual donations, we make a significant contribution to the Festival’s financial security and sustainability. We do more than support the Festival of today, for example by sponsoring the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. We are also dedicated to its further development by fostering young talent through the Lucerne Festival Academy and Music for Future, thus establishing a basis for the art of tomorrow to flourish.
networked, we offer you the opportunity to deepen your concert experience through exclusive discussions with artists, encounters with music experts, and rehearsal visits; at the same time, we invite you to become part of a community of music fans as well as of the “Festival family.” We are particularly eager to attract young adults to our circle of Friends and to benefit from their input and inspiration. That is why we have introduced the Young Friends program: they attend concerts together at discounted rates and meet regularly to share their passion for classical music.
Firmly anchored in Lucerne as a city of music and in Switzerland as a whole, while at the same time internationally
