hat , after all, is sacred music? For Olivier Messiaen, the great French church organist and creator of mystical soundscapes, it’s not just about pious chorales and mighty oratorios. Messiaen believed that religious music can be found all over the earth, “amid birds, flowers, and plants, and even in the visible universe of the stars that surround us.” Or in his instrumental glorification of the divine, Des canyons aux étoiles, which takes us on an ascent from the steep columns of Bryce Canyon right up into the heavens. An ensemble of our LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI will be joined by the Ensemble intercontemporain to perform this impressive work at the Easter Festival: a blissful spiritual experience. Music is unrivaled by any other art in its ability to touch on higher truths. We will experience exactly that when Sir András Schiff plays Bach and Mozart with the Cappella Andrea Barca. Or when Riccardo Chailly and the Filarmonica della Scala explore the Russian soul. And of course when Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (now in its 15 th Easter residency here) welcome the blossoming spring with music by Robert Schumann. Masses by Beethoven and Bruckner will be heard, as will the moving Stabat Mater of the short-lived Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, which Julia Lezhneva and Dmitry Sinkovsky will perform. The extraordinary Russian soprano, who returns following her brilliant debut last year as our artist-in-residence, will additionally showcase her incomparable vocal artistry in a lieder recital. This concert has no intermission

The applause in Lucerne’s Hofkirche simply wouldn’t come to an end. It almost seemed as though the heavenly hosts themselves were joining in the jubilation: the debut of the young Russian Julia Lezhneva at Lucerne’s 2017 Easter Festival was a sensational success. “This soprano, who comes from the easternmost region of Russia, sang her breathtaking coloratura with a smile that became a kind of sparkling musical laughter in the Alleluia concluding the motet by Porpora,” wrote the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. And Lezhneva’s vocal art reminded the Luzerner Zeitung of “swirling billiard balls” and “glittering stars.” But a stunning surprise was provided by the evening’s conductor and violin soloist, Dmitry Sinkovsky, who also performed as countertenor, contributing striking echo effects. The Festival’s Director Michael Haefliger immediately announced a repeat engagement. And this time Sinkovsky will also have a prominent singing role: he will not only conduct but also sing the alto part in Pergolesi’s moving Stabat Mater.

In 2008 the Orquesta Filarmonica de Medellín from Colombia founded an academy to give highly gifted instrumentalists, often from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, an opportunity to study, while also supporting them through regular concerts with internationally active orchestral musicians and soloists – all with free admission. Among the founding members are the conductor Alejandro Posada and Roberto González Monjas, the First Concertmaster of the Musikkollegium Winterthur. From this project a transnational initiative developed in 2015, which today integrates musicians from other Latin American countries as well into the Academia Filarmónica Iberoamericana. The Iberacademy Orchestra brings the finest students together, who concertize regularly in Colombia and South America. And now the young ensemble is also performing for the first time in Europe, with prominent supporters: together with the 26-year-old Egyptian soprano Fatma Said, the star tenor Rolando Villazón will present works by Mozart.

This concert has no intermission

“Anton Bruckner,” the conductor Franz Schalk recalled in 1921, “was a believer without equal. He believed with an intimacy and force that bordered on the miraculous.” The Austrian composer was fondly described as “God’s minstrel,” and his symphonies were explained quite simply as “Masses without words.” As though Bruckner himself had not written three highly ambitious settings of the Catholic Mass! The second of these, the Mass in E minor, will be performed by Ulrike Grosch with the Akademiechor: a chorus comprising students from Lucerne’s Music Academy. This work, which was first performed in 1869 for the dedication of the votive chapel at Linz Cathedral, makes special demands of the choristers, since they have to sing a cappella over long stretches – which requires extreme subtlety of intonation. The ensemble consists exclusively of winds, for which Bruckner prefers to highlight dark colors, omitting flutes.

The great works of Baroque music, especially the operas and oratorios of Handel, Vivaldi, and Graun, are the real domain of the miraculous Russian soprano Julia Lezhneva, who is our artist-in-residence for the 2018 Easter Festival. And yet she remarks: “I would very much like to continue developing as a lieder singer.” And she takes an important step in this direction with her Lucerne recital, in which she will also perform canzonettas from Italian bel canto, such as Gioachino Rossini’s thrilling La regata veneziana: a three-part “live report” of a regatta on the Grand Canal in Venice, during which the young Anzoleta comments on the race in Venetian dialect, firing up her beloved Momolo so vehemently that of course he has to win… With the Franz Schubert selections, Julia Lezhneva will also be completely in her element, since such lieder as Nacht und Träume and Die junge Nonne give her scope to present her incredibly rounded pianissimo and her sublime art of phrasing. And Im Frühling will show off her cosy, humorous side.

“Some of my colleagues are very strict: ‘This is how you do it.’ I don’t have any rules. Young people are so different, I try to come to terms with each one of them. You have to find your own path, after all.” Thus Bernard Haitink once explained his credo as an educator. Works by composers from Mozart through Brahms to Debussy are on the Dutch maestro’s agenda for his public master class during the Easter Festival (the eighth he has offered to date): works that have accompanied him throughout his life and that he has conducted repeatedly, immersing himself in them to find fresh depths. The participants in the master class will profit (as will the public) from Haitink’s insights and rich experience – which pose a wide variety of challenges: Debussy’s Images demand a delicate feeling for timbre, while Mozart requires clear ideas about phrasing.

A Russian Easter with Riccardo Chailly. For his performance with the Filarmonica della Scala, the Italian maestro will present a wealth of Russian folk melodies. Some are quoted by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in his Second Symphony, the Little Russian: such as “Down by Mother Volga,” “Spin, O My Spinner,” and “The Crane.” A suite from Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth meanwhile draws on what is perhaps the most tragic chapter in the history of Russian music: in 1936 Stalin decided to attack Shostakovich by pointing to this opera, accusing the composer of harming the public “with noise and cacophony.” But Chailly and his musicians from La Scala will conclude with a spirited trip to the fair in St. Petersburg, where the amorous goings-on of the Russian version of Punch play out as immortalized by Igor Stravinsky’s epochal ballet score Petrushka. Whether it’s Tchaikovsky’s beguiling melodies, Shostakovich’s progressive soundscapes, or Stravinsky’s witty collage, Russian music is in the finest hands with Chailly on the podium.

“I’ve always found Bach to be liberating,” says Sir András Schiff: “With him I feel like a fish in water.” Every day he begins practicing with this composer. His agility benefits enormously from it – playing Bach is “refreshment for the body, soul, and mind.” And he is also very interesting for young people, according to Schiff: “Because Bach writes so little in the way of playing instructions – there are hardly any tempi, no dynamic markings, phrasing, articulation – you can express yourself in him and through him.” With the German-Iranian pianist Schaghajegh Nosrati, Schiff has discovered a young Bach performer who inspires him: “She understands and plays this magnificent music with astonishing clarity, purity, and maturity,” he observes. And so he has invited her to perform two of Bach’s double concertos with him and the Cappella Andrea Barca. And Mozart, another of Schiff’s idols, completes this program entirely focused on the key of C minor: along with the enchanting Nacht Musique for eight winds, Mozart’s only Piano Concerto in this key will be presented.

Sounds and colors: for Olivier Messiaen, who experienced synesthesia, these belonged inseparably together – which is exactly what made him one of the 20th-century composers most sensitive to timbre. With her lighting design, the British artist Ann Veronica Janssens will explore Messiaen’s ideas of sound and color. The starting point is one of his most expansive scores. Des canyons aux étoiles, written to mark the bicentennial celebration of American independence in 1976, was inspired by the sublime landscape of the state of Utah. In this twelve-movement work, Messiaen guides listeners from the desert to the stars, taking them on a journey to Bryce Canyon National Park – interspersing his nearly 100-minute sonic journey with the songs of more than 80 species of birds. The experience of nature and mystical praise of God are fused into an overwhelming musical spectacle of colors, whose world premiere in 1974 made such an impression that an entire mountain massif was named after the composer: Mount Messiaen in southern Utah.

“But my dear Beethoven, what is it that have you done again?” Nikolaus II von Esterházy was indignant. When Beethoven led the world premiere of his C major Mass on 13 September 1807 in Eisenstadt, the Prince posed this memorable question. And it became even clearer in a letter: “The Mass by Beethoven is ridiculous and abominable,” he wrote, infuriated. “I am angry and mortified.” Noblesse oblige – but clearly not concerned about understanding music. Beethoven himself knew better: the C major Mass was “dear to his heart” as a work of peace in an era given to war. Unlike in the later Missa solemnis, here he puts less focus on music’s overpowering force than on its gentle strength, which moves with immediacy, with elated, unpretentious, pure sounds. Mariss Jansons pairs this rarely played Mass with the E major Trumpet Concerto by Beethoven’s friend Johann Nepomuk Hummel. And with the Symphony in Three Movements by the great Beethoven admirer Igor Stravinsky.

“From heaven through the world to hell.” Or from the Luzerner Theater through the Marktplatz to the Jesuitenkirche and back. The audience moves about among these locations, accompanying Faust on his journey from his study to heavenly apotheosis − and roaming along the Faustian path that encompasses the quest for knowledge, ecstasy, and redemption. Written over a period of almost ten years, Schumann’s Scenes from Goethe’s “Faust” combines elements from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust Parts I and II. In keeping with the Faustian search for meaning, the events are associative and laid out in a fragmentary style, concentrating on the title hero’s gradual decline. Schumann’s musical-theatrical approach to Goethe’s epochal drama is at the same time also his legacy: shortly after completing the score, the composer was admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

For the Easter Festival’s closing concert, Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra make a seasonal contribution: just in time for the start of spring, they will play Schumann’s Spring Symphony, which he composed at the end of the winter of 1841, as he reported, “in that rush of spring which carries a man away even in his old age, and comes over him anew every year.” Schumann recommended to a conductor friend: “I should like the very first trumpet call to sound as though proceeding from on high and like a summons to awaken.” He added: “If only you could breathe into your orchestra that longing for spring! It was my main source of inspiration when I wrote the work.” Meanwhile, Rachmaninoff’s Paganini Rhapsody, in which the Russian pianist Denis Matsuev will perform, is a work of diabolical virtuosity. And with the Divertimento for Orchestra, Jansons takes part in the worldwide celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein – with a cornucopia of styles, from waltz to samba and blues.

During the Easter Festival Starting on 21 March, you can purchase tickets daily during the Easter Festival from 10.00 am until the end of the evening concert’s intermission by visiting the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ticket window at the KKL Luzern’s main entrance (on the lake side). This includes tickets for Easter Festival events as well as for events in the 2018 Summer Festival. Ticket Purchases Directly at the Concert If you decide to attend a concert at the last minute, you can purchase tickets (as available) starting one hour before the concert begins directly at the venue where it takes place.

Picking Up Tickets That Have Been Ordered Tickets that have been ordered in advance may be picked up starting one hour before the performance begins at the relevant venue. Duplicates in Case of Ticket Loss When possible, we will provide duplicates for lost concert tickets. Such duplicates are available exclusively at the evening box office for a fee of CHF 10 per order. It is not possible to print duplicates of tickets purchased at the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ticket window or at our sales outlets without customer data. Returning Tickets for Resale For events that are sold out, tickets can be resold on commission. The commission fee is 30% of the purchase price. The costs of the transfer transaction are payable by the recipient. The organizer accepts no liability for the resale of returned tickets. Print@Home-Tickets as well as tickets for which no customer data were stored at the LUCERNE FESTIVAL box office or that were bought at ticket outlets may not be resold.

THINGS TO KNOW FOR YOUR CONCERT VISIT Entrance to the Concert Hall The house opens 30 minutes before the beginning of the concert. For events in the KKLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lucerne Hall or at one of the venues outside the KKL, if applicable, access will start shortly before the beginning of the event. For the sake of the musicians and the audience, latecomers will not be admitted until intermission or at the discretion of the Concert Hall staff. In certain instances concerts will have no intermission and allow no latecomers. If the concert is missed on account of tardy arrival, tickets will not be refunded.

Audio and Video Recording For all LUCERNE FESTIVAL events, customers are strictly prohibited from making visual or audio recordings, including even for private use. Failure to comply will result in expulsion from the event venue. LUCERNE FESTIVAL makes audio and/or video recordings of certain performances. With the purchase of a concert ticket, the customer understands that LUCERNE FESTIVAL also uses recordings in which it is possible that he or she may appear. Cloakroom It is mandatory to use the cloakroom in the KKL Luzern, which is free of charge. A limited number of lockers is also available in the cloakroom area. Please note that, for security reasons, bags and other objects that are larger than 40x25x25cm in size must be left in the cloakroom before entering the concert halls. Information on Wheelchairs The main concert hall of the KKL Luzern has six wheelchair spaces with a good view of the stage, which are available on special terms. The Festival cannot ensure that accompanying persons will receive a seat in the same price range or in the general vicinity. You can access the KKL Luzern through ground-level doors directly into the foyer, from which elevators give you access to all levels of the building. Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are located near the cloakrooms on the downstairs level. Wheelchair spaces are also available at the other event locations. Free rides within the Passepartout System When you visit the Festival you can travel in Lucerne for free: Your concert ticket may also be used on the day of the performance for a free ride to and from the venue within the Passepartout-Zone 10 (2nd class). Valid from 3 hours before the start and up to 3 hours after the end of the performance.

Park & Ride Several train stations outside the City of Lucerne offer Park & Ride for rail travel to Lucerne. The following stations are especially convenient and provide ample parking: Sursee, Rotkreuz, Zug, Wolhusen, Arth-Goldau, and Sarnen.

Arrival and Departure by Train: 40% Rebate in the Swiss Rail Network As a concertgoer you can receive a discount of 40% for 1st or 2nd class for a round trip to Lucerne. (The concert ticket must be presented to the inspector on the train.) With the halffare card, the trip will cost only 30% of the full fare. This special ticket must be purchased at a Swiss Rail ticket counter, by calling the Rail Service line at 0900 300 300 (CHF 1.19/minute in the Swiss telephone network), or online at the SBB ticket shop (sbb.ch/lucernefestival) before beginning your trip.

A Recipe for Music: The KKL Luzern It’s one of the best-sounding locations in the world: the KKL Luzern’s concert hall, created by Jean Nouvel and renowned for its phenomenal acoustics and exquisite architecture alike. This is where the majority of LUCERNE FESTIVAL’s concerts take place. With a feeling for geometry, forward-looking thinkers in the 19th century had already come to realize what really matters: the sound is best when the concert hall is shaped like a shoebox. The American acoustician Russell Johnson emphasized this even more: from the beginning he understood that a modern concert hall needs to be acoustically variable, that Bach and Bruckner require different sonic environments. The acoustic canopy over the stage, a total of 50 heavy echo chamber structures weighing up to eight tons, plaster reliefs, and all of the materials that are used help to implement the highest level of acoustical quality. Along with double doors that swallow noise and a ventilation system that operates

well below the threshold of audibility, Russell Johnson established a foundation for what any good acoustical environment requires: the sort of absolute quiet in which sounds are allowed to resonate in all their dynamic range – from the gentlest pianissimo to the mightiest fortissimo. This fastidious attention to quality extends to the culinary sphere: with their uniquely composed menus, the Restaurant RED (rated 15 points by Gault Millau), the World Café, and the Seebar round out the total experience of the KKL Luzern.
