Dear Music Lovers,
L
udwig van Beethoven, whose 250th birthday is being celebrated in 2020, shines like a star of good omen over the coming Summer Festival. We will focus on him not only as a composer but also as a political visionary. Beethoven, who was himself stricken by Fate and who endured an era of warfare, believed despite all this in a better future and wanted to give humanity courage to face life through his art. That is why he added to his music all of the ingredients that let the sparks fly: primal rhythms and stirring melodies, fanfares and calls, majestic and triumphant gestures. Beethoven appealed to both the heads and hearts of his audience. He wanted to reach the world: “Be embraced, ye millions!” And: “All humans become brothers.” In our times of social division and polarization, Beethoven’s message is worthier than ever. With the theme of “Joy,” we hope to celebrate that message and through our concerts to activate the feel-good hormones. Naturally, all nine symphonies will be performed – by eight different conductors, including Riccardo Chailly with the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA. Contemporary music will also have a place, with a focus this summer on the refined soundscapes of our composer-inresidence Rebecca Saunders, whose works will be performed by the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI, among others. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla will help define the programming as “artiste étoile,” the first female conductor to be so featured. And of course you can look forward to the greatest artists in the business: to soloists from Cecilia Bartoli to Anne-Sophie Mutter and Daniil Trifonov and to such stars as Daniel Barenboim, Gustavo Dudamel, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Kirill Petrenko, Sir Simon Rattle, and Christian Thielemann. But simply have a read for yourself and look forward to the joy of a great Summer Festival in 2020! Yours,
Michael Haefliger Executive and Artistic Director LUCERNE FESTIVAL

hat makes LUCERNE FESTIVAL so unique? First and foremost, the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA has to be mentioned: an orchestra that exists only here and that meets only once a year. Claudio Abbado and Michael Haefliger founded it in 2003 in order to bring top international musicians together to form an ensemble de luxe that could play without the pressures of the normal professional world – for the pure joy of it. This spirit of friendship has been a hallmark from the very beginning and remains characteristic today, inspiring Music Director Riccardo Chailly as well. In 2020, he will continue with his acclaimed Rachmaninoff project – this time, conducting the Second Symphony and the legendary Second Piano Concerto. The programming will also pay tribute to Ludwig van Beethoven during this anniversary year with his First Symphony and one of his piano concertos – for Chailly, who released a groundbreaking Beethoven cycle in 2011, these are works truly dear to his heart. And he will give attention to another of his favorite compositions when he conducts Mahler’s First. The collaboration with Yannick Nézet-Séguin, which last year was so mutually fulfilling, continues as the conductor turns to Beethoven’s Pastoral and Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony.

hat’s new in the world of music? Take a look at the concerts planned by the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, our unique master school for music of the 20th and 21st centuries, to find out. In 2020, the Academy participants will once again offer exciting and adventurous musical experiences. In addition to modern classics by Igor Stravinsky and Anton Webern, they will focus on numerous world premieres, including a new Piano Concerto by composer-in-residence Rebecca Saunders. In Cosmos Boulez, which launches the first in a three-year series of concerts, they will rediscover important works by Academy founder Pierre Boulez that he withdrew during the course of his long career. And the Composer Seminar led by Wolfgang Rihm, the Academy’s Artistic Director, is naturally also an important part of the program. The LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI, an international network of more than 1,200 former Academy students, shows the long-lasting influence of the work that is done here. The Alumni realize projects of their own around the globe and make a return trip to Lucerne every summer. This time they will present ensemble and orchestral music by Rebecca Saunders – and Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps, the scandalous “Big Bang of modern music.”

“Artiste étoile”
Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla “Artiste étoile”
I
n 2016, when LUCERNE FESTIVAL addressed the question of women’s rights and explored the theme “PrimaDonna,” she was one of eleven maestras who appeared on the podium. Now she returns as “artiste étoile”: Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, the exceptional 33-year-old Lithuanian musician, is the first female conductor in the history of the Festival to receive this honor. Together with her City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, of which she has been Music Director since 2016 – succeeding Sir Simon Rattle and Andris Nelsons – she will perform two symphony concerts featuring works by Saint-Saëns, Sibelius, Debussy, and Bartók, as well as Gustav Holst’s indestructible The Planets, a work that has found its way into completely different genres via jazz, pop, and rock versions. In addition, a Late Night concert will offer an opportunity to get to know Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla from an unexpected side: as a singer of Arabic songs on the theme of love. Thanks to the authority she naturally exudes, “Mirga,” as she is often called, captivates listeners. Her interpretations have nothing artificial about them: they are unvarnished, giving the impression of being self-evident and glowing with energy. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla knows what she wants. And she knows how to get it.

A Concert Portrait of Rebecca Saunders
Rebecca Saunders Composer-in-Residence
H
er music introduces sounds that emerge from and vanish back into silence, developing and unfolding in microtonal deviations and with the finest timbral shadings and dynamics. Abrupt, even aggressive gestures of almost physical presence are also part of her soundscapes. The British composer Rebecca Saunders, who lives in Berlin, is a researcher into sounds. She prefers to focus on individual instruments and to collaborate intensively with her performers in order to “put herself in the position of how an instrument is played” before embarking on her actual compositional process. This enables her to try out sonic materials and unusual playing techniques. Saunders will bring some of her favorite musicians to Lucerne: the trumpeter Marco Blaauw, the soprano Juliet Fraser, and the percussionists Dirk Rothbrust and Christian Dierstein. As composer-in-residence at the 2020 Summer Festival, she will be the subject of a career retrospective focusing on works from the past ten years, such as the concertos Still (for violin), Alba (for trumpet), and void (for percussion duo), which will receive their Swiss premieres. Also on the program are world premieres of new scores, including a piano concerto for Nicolas Hodges that is part of the “Roche Commissions” series.

Beethoven Year 2020
e have chosen the theme of “Joy” for the 2020 Summer LUCERNE FESTIVAL – Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, with its famous “joy” melody in the final movement, is naturally on the agenda. And the works of this “titan” of music history also shape the programming in other ways. Joined by international stars from the classical world, we will celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday with performances of all nine symphonies, plus a special Beethoven Day.

Musical experiences that linger on long afterward: Riccardo Chailly and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA
The Partners of LUCERNE FESTIVAL Main Sponsors Developing content-rich projects in collaboration with leading partners from the business world is a special goal of LUCERNE FESTIVAL. As Main Sponsors, these companies enter into a long-term partnership with the Festival in order to promote the development and implementation of individual artistic concepts. Credit Suisse makes the annual orchestral residency of the Vienna Philharmonic possible. In addition, the Credit Suisse Foundation is dedicated to supporting emerging artists through two awards devoted to the next generation. These are granted annually on an alternating basis: the “Prix Credit Suisse Jeunes 22 LUCERNE FESTIVAL | PREVIEW & SUBSCRIPTION SERIES: SUMMER 2020

Roche is a committed partner of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY and grants composition commissions in alternating years as part of the “Roche Commissions” and the “Roche Young Commissions.” The resulting new works are given their premieres during the Summer Festival. cially the activities of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA in Asia, thus enhancing the worldwide reputation of the Festival. Zurich Insurance Company Ltd (Zurich) has made it a primary goal to enable access to classical music for a broad public. The free “40min” concert series underscores this commitment with numerous events in Lucerne Hall. Theme Sponsor Every summer, LUCERNE FESTIVAL traditionally presents programs rooted in a general theme. In keeping with the 2020 Beethoven Year, this year’s theme will be “Joy.” The topic involves how a concert can be a ritual of joy, a place for collective emotions and for experiencing a sense of connectedness: the performers convey their joy in music to the audience, which in turn partakes in the shared listening experience. The focus will be on works that illuminate the emotion of joy in a wide variety of ways: as in the case of Ludwig van Beethoven, who bases his vision of a brotherhood of all humanity in the final movement of his Ninth Symphony on this emotion. The Clariant Foundation supports LUCERNE FESTIVAL in these endeavors as Theme Sponsor.

Foundation Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL Since its founding in 1966, the Foundation Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL has made supporting the work of one of the world’s most renowned classical music festivals its goal. The moral and financial support that is obtained through this non-profit organization is invaluable for LUCERNE FESTIVAL. The Friends’ contributions, about eight percent of the total budget, are a significant contribution to the Festival’s financial security and sustainability. Aside from this funding source, LUCERNE FESTIVAL is mainly supported by private and corporate sponsors and receives only a small contribution in the form of subsidy from the public sector. The Friends have thus become an indispensable partner of the Festival. But not only is supporting the Festival of today a matter of central concern: they also hope to create a sustainable basis for the artistic activity of tomorrow by fostering such important projects as the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY and LUCERNE FESTIVAL YOUNG. The circle of the Friends of LUCERNE FESTIVAL offers an opportunity to share in the experience of the Festival in all its variety and to deepen your musical experience through such exclusive events as artist meet-and-greets and visits to rehearsals; through the Friends you can moreover make contact with an interesting and international group of like-minded peers. LUCERNE FESTIVAL is grateful to all of its Friends for their long-standing and loyal support. 24 LUCERNE FESTIVAL | PREVIEW & SUBSCRIPTION SERIES: SUMMER 2020

What connects us with musicians, is our passion for THE PERFECT COMPOSITION.
THIS IS CLARIANT: PASSIONATE SUPPORTER OF THE ARTS
The perfect combination of harmony, tempo and rhythm creates music that moves us all. Almost like us: because if we want to get something moving, we combine commitment, know-how and research to create innovative solutions for specialty chemicals that reduce emissions, conserve resources—and create sustainable value. That is precious to us.
