WELCOME! The world has gone off the rails. First, we were locked down by the coronavirus, then the Russian army invaded Ukraine and brought war to the heart of Europe. New concerns involving energy security and rising inflation have emerged. And we must reckon with the almost unstoppable catastrophe of climate change, which threatens human life itself. Amid all these crises, the longing becomes all the more intense for an ideal world: for Paradise. “Paradise” is therefore our theme for the 2023 Summer Festival. But what is it? Is it the place where milk and honey flow? A place of peace and love, happiness and tranquility? A symbol of eternal life? Or is it merely the utopian vision of a better reality? Whichever interpretation we choose: Paradise represents an ideal, something that existed once but is no more — and that, perhaps, can never return yet inspires our imagination. We will have composers spanning five centuries share their visions of musical paradise with us. Through them we will explore the concept of the “fall”: the tragedy of a humanity that destroys its own happiness. The world’s most acclaimed orchestras as well as the leading stars of the classical music scene will be on hand. Claudio Abbado created his own “orchestral paradise” 20 years ago with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, and we will celebrate this milestone anniversary with no fewer than six concerts. The Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) and Enno Poppe as our composer-in-residence will provide revelations in contemporary music. And as our “artiste étoile,” the Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov will guide us to the Olympian summit of the art of the keyboard. Looking forward to a paradisiacal Summer Festival and with warm regards,

Michael Haefliger Executive and Artistic Director Lucerne Festival

LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA

The Lucerne Festival Orchestra celebrates a milestone anniversary. It was 20 years ago, in the summer of 2003, that Claudio Abbado presented his new orchestra to the public for the first time. Since then, the ensemble has given us countless unforgettable moments — and we can also look forward to great things in this anniversary year: symphonies by Mahler, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, and Bruckner, conducted by Riccardo Chailly and Yannick NézetSéguin, and of course chamber music, including a joint performance with “artiste étoile” Daniil Trifonov.

Simultaneously a master school and an orchestra of excellence for new music under one roof, the Lucerne Festival Academy brings together some 100 young instrumentalists from all over the world who focus on music of the 20th and 21st centuries. They will span a spectrum from Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps to Jessie Cox and George Lewis. The Academy participants will work with composer-in-residence Enno Poppe, explore the jagged soundscapes of Mathias Spahlinger’s passage/paysage, and introduce the next generation of composers through the “Roche Young Commissions” and the Composer Seminar.

DANIIL TRIFONOV “ARTISTE ÉTOILE”

When Daniil Trifonov appears at the keyboard, the result is more than a pianistic revelation. He devotes his entire being to what he plays and seems carried away by bliss, as if transported into another world — escorting us along with him into musical paradise. As our “artiste étoile” in the summer of 2023, he will be featured on four evenings, performing Rachmaninoff’s highly virtuosic Fourth Piano Concerto and Schumann’s tender, poetic A minor Concerto; appearing as a chamber musician; and dazzling listeners in a solo recital.

In Öl (“Oil”), melodic lines flow languidly into each another, while microtonally tinted orchestral chord clusters condense in Fett (“Fat”). The musical motifs and materials from which Enno Poppe develops his highly idiosyncratic sonic structures are as vivid as the titles of his works. In addition to his extensive cycle Speicher and a world premiere for the Ensemble intercontemporain, in Lucerne he will present works from recent years. Poppe will also conduct Mathias Spahlinger’s monumental orchestral piece passage/paysage.

LUCERNE FESTIVAL FRIENDS We are passionate about outstanding performances of both traditional and contemporary repertoire. Communication between artists and the audience as well as between generations is important to us. That is why we support one of the most important music festivals in the world. The Friends have been an indispensable partner of Lucerne Festival for more than 50 years. Through our personal commitment and annual donations, we make a significant contribution to the Festival’s financial security and sustainability. We do more than support the Festival of today, for example by sponsoring the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. We are also dedicated to its ongoing development by fostering young talent through the Lucerne Festival Academy and Music for Future,

thus establishing a basis for the art of tomorrow to flourish. Firmly anchored in Lucerne as a city of music and in Switzerland, while at the same time internationally networked, we offer you the opportunity to deepen your concert experience through exclusive discussions with artists, encounters with musical experts, and rehearsal visits; at the same time, we invite you to become part of a community of music fans as well as of the “Festival family.” We are particularly eager to attract young adults to our circle of Friends and to benefit from their input and inspiration. That’s why we introduced the Young Friends program: they attend concerts together at discounted rates and meet regularly to share their passion for classical music.

Rehearsal with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Riccardo Chailly

We love classical music.
