WELCOME! “Children! Make something new! Something new! And again something new!” Richard Wagner’s motto for creative people conveys the idea that we need to be open to innovation to appeal to the future. Pierre Boulez pursued this idea when he founded the Lucerne Festival Academy in 2004 as a musical workshop in which only what is new is put to the test and presented so that the audience experiences an emotional connection to unfamiliar sounds. We celebrate the 20th anniversary of our Academy by exploring the theme of “Curiosity” and opening ourselves up to being inspired by an avid hunger for the new (the German word for curiosity, Neugier, literally means “hunger for the new”): new works and modes of presentation. The repertoire’s “classics” naturally benefit from this angle as well. Two composers with milestone birthdays take center stage. Anton Bruckner, who was born 200 years ago and who stunningly put Wagner’s motto into practice, is represented by no fewer than five symphonies, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Kirill Petrenko, Andris Nelsons, Christian Thielemann, and Lahav Shani as the conductors. Arnold Schoenberg went one step further and even invented a new musical grammar with his twelve-tone theory. To mark his 150th birthday, we trace the path from his late Romantic beginnings to atonality. You can experience the incomparable Lucerne Festival Orchestra in four concerts conducted by Riccardo Chailly, Klaus Mäkelä, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) will focus on works by our two composers-in-residence, Beat Furrer and Lisa Streich, as well as by the Academy’s founder Pierre Boulez and his successor Wolfgang Rihm. And the two “artistes étoiles,” Lisa Batiashvili and Sheku Kanneh-Mason, will arouse your curiosity with unusual projects. Looking forward to a summer of surprises!

LISA BATIASHVILI “ARTISTE ÉTOILE”

Breathtaking virtuosity, a charismatic aura, unusual program ideas, and a beguiling violin tone: Lisa Batiashvili has everything one could wish for in an “artiste étoile.” What’s more, she speaks out courageously on political issues: for example, on behalf of Ukraine. She fights for human rights and, through the Lisa Batiashvili Foundation, promotes highly talented young musicians from her home country of Georgia. You must experience this artist!

He has completely shaken up the music world. There’s nothing elitist about Sheku KannehMason — he looks more like the nice boy next door. But when he plays the cello, you can’t help but be amazed. Incredible speed and emotion, virtuosity, and poetry: it’s all there! Though only 24 years old, the British cellist is already one of the world’s stars. As “artiste étoile,” he will perform two famous cello concertos, one each by Dvořák and Shostakovich, appear in a duo recital with guitar, and astound us with a surprise concert.

BEAT FURRER COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE

“Every note’s fading away contains an entire drama in itself,” according to Beat Furrer, whose music emphasizes the physical tangibility of sound. Born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, and based in Vienna, Furrer is one of the most distinguished composers of our time. As part of his Lucerne residency, he will lead the world premiere of a new orchestral piece. Beat Furrer will also present his opera Begehren for the first time in Switzerland in a performance in which he will conduct the ensemble he founded, Klangforum Wien.

Sometimes she thinks of the cello as a piano so as to stimulate entirely new sonic ideas. Sometimes she listens to the slightly off-pitch intonation of amateur choirs to hear unusual harmonies. Lisa Streich is not interested in “the perfect piece,” as she explains. Rather, she wants to “bring things together that I haven’t come across before.” Seven years ago, the Swedish composer, who was born in 1985, was introduced in Lucerne as part of the Roche Young Commissions series. Now she returns as composer-inresidence with a new trumpet concerto among other pieces.
