WELCOME! As the year draws to a close, the excitement among music lovers intensifies: what will Lucerne Festival bring next summer? Which artists have been invited, what discoveries await us, what will the main theme be? For 2022, we are keeping our finger on the pulse of the times by choosing a theme that directly affects the current social situation: diversity. This is a theme that has many facets. To begin with, we will address the explosive question of why so few people of color have been visible in classical music, and we will venture to remedy that. The Festival begins and ends with performances by two Chineke! orchestras — the junior ensemble and the adult formation — each of which comprises musicians who mostly come from ethnic minority backgrounds. Our two “artistes étoiles,” Angel Blue and Tyshawn Sorey, are African American: she a celebrated soprano, he a musician with the most diverse profile imaginable as a drummer, trombonist, and pianist as well as a composer and improviser. Many concerts will explore the role that gender, sexual orientation, or ethnicity plays in musical life. And it goes without saying that the program will include works drawing from a diversity of sources, from folk music to jazz and from the sounds of nature to stylistic collages. The Lucerne Festival Orchestra will perform three concerts with its Music Director Riccardo Chailly and one with Jakub Hrůša, who made his triumphant debut with this ensemble in 2021. The Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) will focus on the work of composer-in-residence Thomas Adès and celebrate the milestone birthdays of Wolfgang Rihm and Dieter Ammann. And when it comes to the parade of the world’s finest orchestras and top stars scheduled for Lucerne, it is impossible to single out only two or three names. You will just have to read for yourself — please enjoy!

LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA

The Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Riccardo Chailly kick off the Summer Festival with a world premiere celebrating Wolfgang Rihm’s 70th birthday. But that is not the only premiere of the Opening Concert: Anne-Sophie Mutter will appear with the orchestra for the first time and, for the occasion, has chosen a violin concerto by SaintGeorges, “le Mozart noir,” in keeping with the theme of “Diversity.” Works by Mahler and Rachmaninoff and a ravishing Dvořák-Suk program conducted by Jakub Hrůša will be performed on the other evenings.

THOMAS ADÈS COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE

He flirts with blues and Baroque music, drawing inspiration from the great symphonic tradition as well as from club culture. The Briton Thomas Adès is a virtuoso of versatility who defies aesthetic dogmas (such as a strictly avant-garde approach) with relish. And yet his music is immediately recognizable. Among the works that Adès will present in Lucerne are his multimedia piano concerto In Seven Days, chamber music compositions, and a new violin concerto for Anne-Sophie Mutter. He will also appear as a conductor and in a piano duo with Kirill Gerstein.

She started off by playing guitar, saxophone, and piano and at 21 was crowned “Miss Hollywood” — but instead of a modeling career, she decided to pursue a life in classical music. Today, the American Angel Blue is one of the opera stage’s big stars, appearing at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna and Bavarian Staatsoper companies. As our summer’s “artiste étoile,” she will enchant Lucerne audiences with her honey-sweet, vivid soprano in no fewer than three symphony concerts.

TYSHAWN SOREY “ARTISTE ÉTOILE”

It’s pointless to try to pigeonhole what Tyshawn Sorey does. This American phenomenon is a drummer, pianist, trombonist, and composer. He moves between jazz and contemporary composition, between precisely notated scores and free improvisation. And in Lucerne he will appear in all of these roles as he presents two world premieres and performs with the JACK Quartet. Sorey will also conduct the group improvisatory work Autoschediasms.

LUCERNE FESTIVAL FRIENDS We are passionate about outstanding performances of both traditional and contemporary repertoire. Communication between artists and the audience as well as between generations is important to us. That is why we support one of the most important music festivals in the world. The Friends have been an indispensable partner of Lucerne Festival for more than 50 years. Through our personal commitment and annual donations, we make a significant contribution to the Festival’s financial security and sustainability. We do more than support the Festival of today, for example by sponsoring the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. We are also dedicated to its further development by fostering young talent through the Lucerne Festival Academy and Music for Future,

thus establishing a basis for the art of tomorrow to flourish. Firmly anchored in Lucerne as a city of music and in Switzerland, while at the same time internationally networked, we offer you the opportunity to deepen your concert experience through exclusive discussions with artists, encounters with musical experts, and rehearsal visits; at the same time, we invite you to become part of a community of music fans as well as of the “Festival family.” We are particularly eager to attract young adults to our circle of Friends and to benefit from their input and inspiration. That’s why we introduced the Young Friends program: they attend concerts together at discounted rates and meet regularly to share their passion for classical music.

Rehearsal with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Riccardo Chailly

We love classical music.
