A gym is the journey of life. The Modern Sports club is a place where transformation happens. A transformation from ugly to beautiful, from weak to strong and transition between different life styles. The site is surrounded by bridges connects nearby buildings and decks. It’s like a labyrinth in the middle of the city which brings different people from skyscrapers to the site, to take off the heavy pressure of life and switch to a more relaxed mode. Therefore the labyrinth in the city gets extended into the gym, where all parts overlay with each other and all the events happen at the same time.

I am interested in the idea of physics and its implications on the perception and imagination of architecture. By assigning a false gravity, to a flat section artifact, I was able to speculate on how a structure distorts and collapses. The act of design is found as the existing structure confronts the fact of its burden – its perceived weights and physical properties, are suspended in a productive architectural stasis. Architectural elements are assigned perceived physical behaviors found in the act of collapse. Floor slabs that are sheared off their supports collapse vertically and come to rest at an incline. Elements of a space frame snap and spin off into a condensed nest of parts and sheared stacks. Gravitational force interacts with the architectural elements in plan and section, reducing the structure to its most essential overlapping elements, a process that creates collapses in two dimensions. Along with shear and incline, nest is introduced as a method, in which space is inverted into solid, and repeatedly nested into the central solid of the rock sculpture.

The way people observe the street and what kind of experience people gain from their observation varies. Most people experience the street and city at a slight glance and there were many interesting micro details which were easliy ignored by busy passerby. I thus created a prosthetic device which control the view of people changing between micro and macro through their body movement.

Garment District, New York

After observing two customers changing clothes in garment district, I found out that body movements as well as walking paths are influenced by the fabric and their movements do not always follow the rational strict lines within the space. Therefore the curved surfaces were created by weaving between two basswood sticks which are perpendicular to each other in space. There is also diversity in the way and density of weaving to differenciate the private, semi-public and public space. In this way the surface of twine leads people in and out through the entire

Human body is an art of origami. Impelled by different emotions, body folds and unfolds. The actors in movie west side story had extreme emotinal expression which has strong contrast with people in Lincoln center who are calmer. The flexible triangular surfaces of Aterlier derive from the triangular weaving changing rooms and they fold and unfold to interlock with the fins of Lincoln center. The circulation of administrative office/ studio space/ fabrication space/ storage/ runway stage/ retail boutique also reveal the contrast between emotional movements in west side story and calm spirit in Lincoln center.

Garnier Opera House, Paris

The goal was to transfer the atelier in Lincoln center into the lobby atrium in Garnier Opera House in paris. I analyzed the scene Christine was seduced in the movie Phantom of the Opera and found 7 tension and compression points according to the emotion in the movie. Part of the staircase was replaced and these 7 points distort the original atelier and make it expand like an octopus which has parasitic relationship to the origin Garnier opera house. The octopus swallows people inside and serve as a circulation hall. The function of atelier remains however the opening varies. The bottom openings are small enough to peek inside and outside while the upper openings are big and open to upper level for privacy differencing. The top transparent structure refers back to the screen of display the prosthetic at previous step.

In an increasingly globalised setting the dominance of visual seductiveness and soulless technology has destabilised the main quality of architecture: an occasion to convey material and immaterial values. Studio Two aims to tackle the current trend, which neglects the fundamental role of architecture as a powerful tool for social engagement, so as to build a sense of place and community. As well as working on pure theory, we aim to re-think space in a pragmatic manner, through intellectual injections and critical interpretations of contemporary good practice, in order to refine a methodology capable of making a responsible design for the future. Students were asked to build a housing complex in Liverpool in substitution of a recent development, trying to create an environment attentive to the cultural context, sensitive to scale and that fosters human interaction. This should be tackled via a tthoughtful design of a single inhabitable unit, considering the role of the unit in the formation of the whole scheme.

You employ stone, wood and concrete, and with these materials you build houses and palaces. That is construction. Ingenuity is at work. But suddenly you touch my heart, you do me good, I am happy and I say: ‘This is Beautiful’. That is Architecture. Art enters in. (Le Corbusier, 1923) The project is divided into two parts. The first is the study of the materials, their performance and the relation to the two basic construction principles, structural frame or load bearing masonry. The second is the application of that knowledge to the design of a walled garden on the Ropewalks area.
