Orchard Street, New York

The way people observe the street and what kind of experience people gain from the observation varies. Most people experience the street and city at a slight glance and there were many interesting micro details which were easliy ignored by busy passerby. I thus create a prosthetic device which control the view of people changing between micro and macro through their body movement.

The triangular prism display at the northern tip of Flatiron building function as a framed screen of observation. In the daytime when outside is brighter than inside, it is hard for observer from outside looking into the inside. While in the night time when interior lights on, it is possible to observe the bright interior meanwhile hard to observe from interior to darker exterior. Thus I would like to continue the idea of frame the view from prosthetic into the display screen using several interlocked triangular pyramid.

The frame of view varies from triangle with depth to 3D rectangle with barriers, encourage people to move while looking at the display. It increase the interaction with people and break the barrier of seen and been seen.

Dressing Room Critic Year Scale Credit Site

Babak Bryan NY/P 2016 Fall Room Individual Garment District, New York

After stalking two customers changing clothes in Garment district, I found out the body movements as well as walking paths are influenced by the fabric and the movements are not always follow the rational strict lines within the space. Therefore the curved surfaces were created by weaving between two basswood sticks which are perpendicular to each other in space. There is also diversity in the way and density of weaving to differenciate the private, semi-public and public space. In this way the surface of twine leads people in and out through the entire circulation.

Human body is an art of origami. Impelled by different emotions, body folds and unfolds. The actors in movie west side story had extreme emotinal expression which has strong contrast with people in Lincoln center who are calmer. The flexible triangular surfaces of Aterlier were derive from the triangular weaving changing rooms and they fold and unfold to interlock with the fins of Lincoln center. The circulation of administrative office/ studio space/ fabrication space/ storage/ runway stage/ retail boutique also reveal the contrast between emotional movements in west side story and calm spirit in Lincoln center.

Octopus Atelier Critic Year Scale Credit Site

Thomas de Monchaux NY/P 2016 Fall Building Individual Garnier Opera House, Paris

The goal was to transfer the atelier in Lincoln center into the lobby atrium in Garnier Opera House in paris. I analyse the scene Christine was seduced in the movie Phantom of the Opera and get 7 tension and compression points according to the emotion in the movie. Part of the staircase was replaced and these 7 points distort the original atelier and make it expend like an octopus which has parasitism relationship to the origin Garnier opera house. The octopus swallow people inside and serve as a circulation hall. The function of atelier remains however the opening varies. The bottom openings are small enough to peek inside and outside while the upper openings are big and open to upper level for privacy differencing. The very top part transparent structure refers back to the screen of display the prosthetic at previous step.

In an increasingly globalised setting the dominance of visual seductiveness and soulless technology has destabilised the main quality of architecture: an occasion to convey material and immaterial values. Studio Two aims to tackle the current trend, which neglects the fundamental role of architecture as a powerful tool for social engagement, so as to build a sense of place and community. As well as working on pure theory, we aim to re-think space in a pragmatic manner, through intellectual injections and critical interpretations of contemporary good practice, in order to refine a methodology capable of making a responsible design for the future. Students were asked to build a housing complex in Liverpool in substitution of a recent development, trying to create an environment attentive to the cultural context, sensitive to scale and that fosters human interaction. This should be tackled via a tthoughtful design of a single inhabitable unit, considering the role of the unit in the formation of the whole scheme.

The materiality and texture not only influenced people’s walking path, living habit, but also influenced people’s mood and mind. The vivid color and texture of brick settled in communal area will give people an excited mood while the grey concrete settled in living and private space will help people to calm down. Architrects are not only design in 3D, but in 4D to influence people’s mind and mental health, maybe even in 5D or 6D in the future.

You employ stone, wood and concrete, and with these materials you build houses and palaces. That is construction. Ingenuity is at work. But suddenly you touch my heart, you do me good, I am happy and I say: ‘This is Beautiful’. That is Architecture. Art enters in. (Le Corbusier, 1923) The project is divided into two parts. The first is the study of the materials, their performance and the relation to the two basic construction principles, structural frame or load bearing masonry. The second is the application of that knowledge to the design of a walled garden on the Ropewalks area.
