Kinesthetic Game: JUMPING IN AND OUT OF SHAPES Draw shapes like circles, triangles and rectangles on the floor with a piece of chalk - avoiding squares, because they are too difficult to define without a ruler and to distinguish from a rectangle by a 4 - to 5 - year - old child. Later you can add hearts, stars and diamonds. Be sure to leave some space between your shapes and tell them to jump in and out of them. Do it slowly at the beginning and increase the speed once they’ve got the different shapes’ names. You’ll notice after a while that one or more of your students will feel a strong desire to lead the game, which is exactly what you want!!! Play Bingo! Don’t forget to bring some treats as prizes for your brilliant students! They are making a big effort paying attention for so long! They deserve a prize! Each student will have a whole set of colored shapes (7 elements). They must place the correct one on its matching shape on the Bingo chart.

Colour and count

This next activity will help your student become more conscious about the physical differences among each shape, by making their own. Print the bars on some cardbard and, after cutting them out, join them with a pin.

Shapes and colors are the first subjects that a child who attends kindergarden must assimilate. I prepared some activities, inspired by Maria Montessori's books, that will help our toddlers learn about circles, squares, rectangles, diamonds, stars, hearts and triangles! Besides the classic counting, coloring tracing and bingo activities, they will learn how to organize the shapes according to their dimensions and hue, and about sequences. Finally, they'll get more conscious about the physical differences between each shape, by making their own, using some colorful bars and pins.
