This book is a collection of photos that were taken on a journey through Portugal and Spain. It records a trip to famous tourist destinations. All photos are taken from vehicles and are photographed behind the window. Behind the glass.
1/On the way to Cadaqués, Catalonia, Spain. It is on a bay in the middle of the Cap de Creus peninsula, , on the Costa Brava of the Mediterranean. It is only a two-and-a-quarter hour drive from Barcelona. Cadaqués has a special place in art history. Salvador Dalí often visited Cadaqués in his childhood, and later kept a home in Port Lligat, a small village on a bay next to the town.
2/On the way to Espinho, Portugal. Espinho is a city in Espinho Municipality in Portugal. It is a reputed beach resort and a zone of legal gambling. The city is home to CINANIMA - Festival Internacional de Cinema de Animação, an international animation festival.
3/On the way to Guimaraes, Portugal. Guimarães is a northern Portuguese city located in the district of Braga. Guimarães is one of the country’s most important historical cities. Its historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it one of the largest tourist centers in the region. The city is often referred to as the “birthplace of the Portuguese nationality”. Guimarães, jointly with Maribor, is the European Capital of Culture in 2012.
4/On the way to Porto, Portugal. Porto also known as Oporto in English, is the second largest city in Portugal and one of the major urban areas in the Iberian Peninsula. Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. One of Portugal’s internationally famous exports, port wine, is named for Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the adegas of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the production and export of the fortified wine.
5/On the way to Lisbon, Portugal. Lisbon is the capital city and largest city of Portugal. Lisbon is the westernmost large city located in Europe. It lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus River. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by hundreds of years. Lisbon has two sites listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site: Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery. Furthermore, in 1994, Lisbon was the European Capital of Culture and in 1998 organised an Expo ‘98.
6/On the way to Geres, Portugal. The Peneda-Gerês National Park is the only national park in Portugal. It is located in the Norte region, in the northwest of Portugal. Worthy of mention are the Garrano (or Minho horse), a breed of small equine species who were ancestors of the Galician pony and Andalusian horse, which mostly live in the wild, but are a gentle breed with no significant fear of humans. For a long time these horses permeated the farms of Vilarinho das Furnas (before it was inundated with the dam’s construction), but later began to freely move between the Portuguese-Spanish border after 1979.
7/On the way to Braga, Portugal. Braga a city in the Braga Municipality in northwestern Portugal, is the capital of the Braga District, the oldest archdiocese and the third major city of the country. Braga is the oldest Portuguese city and one of the oldest Christian cities in the World. Braga is the largest city in Portugal after Lisbon and Oporto. Braga is also one of the fastest growing urban areas in the European Union. In 2012, Braga will be the centre of European youth, the city has been awarded with the title European Youth Capital 2012 (EYC).
8/On the way to Coimbra, Portugal. Coimbra is known for its university, the University of Coimbra, which is one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest academic institution in the Portuguese-speaking world. The university, one of the oldest in Europe, apart from attracting many European and international students, is visited by tourists for its monuments and history.
9/On the way to NazarĂŠ, Portugal. NazarĂŠ has become a popular tourist attraction, advertising itself, internationally, as a picturesque seaside village. Located on the Atlantic coast, it has long sandy beaches (considered by some to be among the best beaches of Portugal), crowded with tourists in the summer. The town used to be known for its traditional costumes worn by the fishermen and their wives who worn the traditional headscarf and embroidered aprons over seven flannel skirts in different colours.
