Recreation area: fill the space of a cube
The volume available was a cube of 5 meters wide. The only requirement was to be able to occupy the espace. I chose to create a space dedicated to children with tunnels, a firefighter pole, a playground slide and a raised observation point (to protect them and offer a exclusive place). It’s a space deliberately simple in its lines and in its shapes in order to adjust into an urban modern environment. Inspirations

The Waterfall House
The project was to create a dwelling of 35 square meters maximum on a plot of 5 meters wide by 5 meters long and with the possibility to raise until 7,5 meters high. There were some demands such as premices for trash and bikes, separated bathroom & toilets and a kitchen with a fridge, hobs and a work surface. I elaborated my spaces on the basis of simples forms, at varied scales and which are repeated diagonally; I wanted to play on the idea of motion but also on the contrast of full and void. The staircase, inside and outside (i.e. the shape of the south-orientated façade) allows to link the 3 floors amongst themselves and offers a continuity of spaces as well as great luminosity. Aldo Van Eyck: museum of utopian architectures
This project was based on the study of an architect’s work and the construction of a cubic space of 15 meters wide reflecting his thought. My choice was Aldo Van Eyck and his repeated use of elementary shapes, gathered under the form of a weft, in order to create spaces whose organisation isn’t ranked (where all components have the same significance). First, I worked on plan (2D) so as to find an arrangement of simple spaces, a circulation in a perspective of path which will make people want to discover the volume in its entirety, like a labyrinth.

Then, I used cubic and rectangular forms that I developed at differents scales on varied levels (3D).

Exclusive apartment in a tower in Hong Kong
The theme of this project was to imagine a space starting from a surface area and an available height. Each student had a dedicated floor of the tower.
100 m²
Around a minimum core (4 x 2 meters) used as structure and allowing vertical circulation in the tower, we were totally free to develop the project we desired. Inspiration: Sou Fujimoto
Owning the 20th floor (on the 22 contained by the tower), I seized the opportunity to create a dwelling. I decided to work on varied levels, in order to design spaces each one with its own function; Each room has different lengths, width and heights so as to propose unique atmospheres. I established a simple structure authorising a continuous circulation all around the central core as well as openings specifics to the function of the rooms to reinforce their identities and offer diverses views on the surroundings of the tower.

Nemausus: analysis of an housing project
The goal of this exercise was to examine a type of collective housing and deduce from it an architectural analysis of this kind of construction. The first part of the project was to research about the architecture, concept and construction in order to understand it in its totality. The second part was to conclude on the reading of the spaces by the easier way possible. We produced a records including photographs, plans, section, isometry and informations as well as a model. We chose to make a structural model so as to show the particular functioning of the building which rely on a regular grid pattern of slabs and walls. Circulation are displaced on the periphery of the construction for saving some space (the aim of the project was to create new social housing with bigger surface areas than what’s expected for the customary social housing).
* designed by Jean Nouvel * built from 1985 to 1988 in Nîmes (south of France) * oriented East-West * surface area: 10 500m² for 5 floors including 2 in duplex * 114 apartments (from 90 to 160m²) * 70 parking spots under each building, as an open but covered parking (an half underground on piles) * access: outside stairs serving 3 levels of walkways (on the north façade) + elevators * individual balconies/terraces of 15m² (on the south façade) 17

The Emblem tower: a mixed-generation estate
The theme of this project was to imagine an intergenerational living place, where elderly people will mix with students and youngs workers, each generation living in collective housing working on the principle of joint tenancy.
Site (152 rue de Tocqueville, Paris)
The program includes a group of communal premises but also a medical center and spaces for activities open to the residents of the neighbourhood and, last but not least, a tied accommodation for the caretaker. The chosen site was the plot of a disused petrol station. I structured my project on 2 notions: intimacy and light. For the first one, I distributed the dwellings at the rate of one by floor with a direct access from the means of circulation. In the apartments, I created two spaces: on one side the communal rooms (living-room, kitchen) and on the other the bedrooms, these two poles being separated by the circulation core in the middle and by the wet rooms (toilets, bathrooms) on the sides. For the second one, I designed every room in order to be illuminated by direct natural light. Inspirations: MVRDV/Bertrand Goldberg 19
The round shape allowed me to free myself from the plot as well as to offer a diversity of viewpoints for every bedrooms but also to slot into more or less rooms without modifying the faรงade of the building (all the apartments having the same surface by aesthetic choice). Furthermore, I created community spaces where youngs et olders can meet and share together, such as lounges (on the 2nd floor) and a roof terrace with vegetable gardens and everything necessary for a cookout.

L’ours blanc: a space for discovery
The goal of this exercice was to choose a work of art which affected us and create a space of exploration, to transcribe and make people feel the sensations we perceive regarding it. We had to trigger a spatial experience. The surface area of the plot couldn’t exceed 10 square meters and the space should allow to host two persons at the same time: oneself and a second person which discovers the work of art. I chose the Ours Blanc by François Pompon (1923-1933), a french sculptor. First, I analysed the sculpture and the feelings it provoked: this creature is really imposing in front of us and seems to be alive because it catches the personified essence of the animal and transcribes it in the most pure way. For the space, I opted for a truncated sphere since it offered a bigger surface than the one requested for the plot and also for its absence of right angles in response to the sculpture whose all details have been softened. I also created a zenithal light well in order to set up a certain atmosphère.

Thickness: a museal space
The purpose of this exercise was to shape the space of a sidewalk and the blind faรงades which drive along it in order to implant a multi-function museal space. This building must be a vantage point of the city, by its location and its content, and reflect our critical and sensitive outlook. The plot measured 50 meters long by 10 meters wide on one side and 4 meters wide on the other side. The continuity of the sidewalk should be preserved. I decided to separate my building from the blind faรงades so as to protect this so atypical element. I played on strata (layers), giving verticality and allowing me to show the sense of protection I felt while walking on the site. I chose to create my space through a work on the thickness. By decreasing and expanding the construction, I produced spaces of numerous dimensions fitted to each function of the project but always in connection with human scale and in response to the hollows in the blind faรงades.

Camouflage/Twins: an architecture for exhibition
The subject of this exercise was to design an architecture in order to unveil to the public, for the very first time, the Silverbridge private art collection which contained about one thousand contemporary works of art. The site we chose was an apartment building under construction at the edge of the square Jean Jaurès in Montreuil sous Bois (in front of the town hall). Our sion
project of
was based on the futwo concepts/words.
Site (project by Alvaro Siza)
The first one, «camouflage», is traducted by a principle of double-skin where the inside one is betrayed by a detail and so become visible from the outside. In the project, it was embodied by a structure hidden by an envelope (which can melt into its close environment) and which will give away itself through openings into this façade.
OUTSIDE
INSIDE
Concepts: Camouflage/Twins Module created
Study models/Research 31
The second one, «twins», is based on the complexity of twinning which from an equal basis will distinguish during growth until to create two entities quite disctincts. For the project, it was about devise two spaces which look identicals from the outside but which, inside, reveal two completely different paths. A module was used to integrate the various functions of the programme. By subtracting these modules from the existing building, we end up with the exhibition spaces which punctuate the whole facility.

Ă…rsta Holmar: urban development into the wild
The aim of this exercice was to find a purpose for the island of Ă…rsta Holmar, situated in the centre of Stockholm. It was an unused and inaccessible land in a city with an increasing need for housing. In order to make cohabit the nature and the city, I designed a vertical architecture so I have the less invasive ground coverage and I decided that most of the island will be kept at its natural condition in order to provide an unusual setting to the future visitors and allow them to rediscover nature in city.
site
I created a large avenue coming from the north side; opened to vehicles, bikes and pedestrians, it offers access to the entirety of the program (and parking spots). Departing from the avenue, a series of secondary roads availables to all (children, elderly, handicaped ...) spread on the island. The island thus connected become a new neighbourhood opened to everyone by its easy access, the facilities it provides and the presence of preserved green spaces. Ă…rsta Holmar is an appealing hub in the making.
Inspiration: Overseas highway to the Keys + Bosco Verticale (Boeri Studio) 35
2 train stations are created on the walkway intended for pedestrians and bikes (already existing along the train bridge). Residents of Stockholm will be able to access the island by an eco-friendly way.

I decided to work on the possibility of making children interact with pets. Pets presence helps children to learn how to communicate with others, allows them to develop their personality, makes them understand notions of responsabilites and patience. Otherwise, animals presence can provide therapeutic benefits (for ills or handicapped). The site was the park behind the ÂŤPetit PalaisÂť in Paris (8th district); my choice has been guided by the lack of kindergarten in the surroundings but also by the necessity of a significant surface area. My project operates on two levels: the outside playground occupy the ground floor while interior spaces, the veterinary clinic and the children playground accessible for animals are situated below it (sheltered from the noise and the car traffic). Two access are available; in the south, a ramp to the entrance of the clinic (+ handicapped access) and in the north, a stair passing by the kids playground.

Curative path: an efficient native area
The theme of the project was the creation of an efficient space at varied scales: urban, social and ecological. The site is an abandoned fallow land in Neuilly-sur-Marne (East of Paris), established in a area liable to flooding. It’s enclosed by all sides: in the south, there is the Chelles canal, The N34 road is in the north and the mental institution of VilleEvrard is adjacent to the site westward. The plot vironment
merges that
Site
into a wooded ennature reclaimed.
The will of our project was to keep the very characteristic atmosphere of the original park , wild and mysterious despite its location, so urban. We created a structuring weft allowing the exploration of the site from above ground, connecting some ponctual architectural interventions which shelter adjustable spaces. Those scalable areas offer liberty to apprehend the space and can be used for concerts, exhibitions, rest time ...
method of phytoremediation: purification and decontamination of sewage 41
This establishment allows to create an atypical exploration path, which could be related to the unsung world of mental diseases and so, fit into a curative approach for the patients of the psychiatric institution. Moreover, there is in this project a desire to make visitors participate into the environment and its process. The user become operator of the site because he can interact with the surrounding nature, but also by composing his very own nature (eg: vegetable garden ...). Furthermore, the opening of the canal and the water filling of a part of the site were vitals as they offered a touristic and playful attraction.

Meeting place: children care center
The subject of this semester was to reinterpret an abstract photograph of an architectural situation into a new project (it dealt with the idea of a vice versa perception of architecture).
Chosen photograph
A range of photos has been provided by architectural photographer Johannes Marburg, who has been involved all semester long. The project has been placed in the 6th district of Paris, in the rue de Seine, behind the Institut de France. First we analysed the nature, composition and atmosphere of the image at various scales (global, details) in order to find a way of looking at the picture and beyond what’s actually shown (what is there or not, what could be there). In a second time, we had to transform this analysis into a brief. Then, it became a building or structure fitting into the site and its surroundings.

Ghost town challenge: Liepāja’s Crystals
For this project, we had the opportunity to work into the real conditions of a competition.
« Ghost Town »
The site is in Karosta, a former soviet military «town» in the north of Liepāja city centre. As Latvia regained its independence in 1990, the soviet military had to leave Karosta. As a result the population dropped dramatically from 25 000 to 6 000, leaving many abandoned buildings behind which have fallen into a state of almost complete disrepair. There is an unique urban context because of the presence of impressive historic monuments such as St. Nicholas Ortodox Marine Cathedral (just above the site), the Horse Arena and Karosta Prison. Specific and unique poetic value can also be found in brutalist architecture ‘soviet style’ apartment buildings. The program of re-stimulation is about create a complex that will be a main attraction of the town and help to bring back life to this part of the city. This intervention had to be a multi-purpose cultural centre with an exhibition hall, a library, a conference centre and a restaurant (at least).
