SCENTS THAT CAN DO WONDERS FOR YOUR WELL-BEING

The Future Of Living Fluidly Through Fragrance: Smell To Make You Well Day to day life can be somewhat draining, bringing upon many unwanted emotions and triggering our stress levels, resulting in us having less desire for and towards certain things. Many people in society today are venturing towards leading a less structured lifestyle and becoming open to change, in order to live more fluidly. This way of living is what we currently desire, if it means having a more relaxing and practical life. With this in mind recent studies show how certain scents are becoming influential towards meeting these desires, due to their multifunctional purpose. Not only are they meeting our usual expectations of helping us to smell nice, but they are also said to be providing many other benefits to our well-being. Some of the scents that have been identified as doing wonders for our health include: the smell of pine, which is said to help alleviate stress, as according to research it could be helping to decrease our anxiety. In one Japanese study, participants who went on a walk through pine forests reported significantly lower depression and stress levels. The research also discovered that anxious subjects had a greater feeling of relaxation after indulging in the scent”, (Huffingtonpost, 2015). Research studies also state that the aroma from fresh-cut grass releases a certain chemical, which is said to help us feel more joyful. While the aroma from citrus is also helping to increase our energy levels, as well as making us feel more alert.

Furthermore, the scent from peppermint may also be helping to increase concentration levels. “A small study out of Wheeling Jesuit University found that smelling peppermint could be linked to greater cognitive stamina, motivation and overall performance”, Huffingtonpost, 2015). And finally, pumpkins may capture connotations of Halloween, but the scent from them can act as an aphrodisiac, giving a help in hand towards increasing our sex drive. Although many of you may already be familiar with the names of these things, it is the purpose in which their smell serves that is providing a new outlook on the future of fragrance. This future is one that will be focused on wearing a fragrance that meets more than our usual needs. A fragrance that will also provide practicality by acting as a stress buster and mood enhancer, to help soothe our minds at a time of when we could do with a ‘pick- me -up’.

“Over the past 2 decades, an industry has developed around aromatherapy and the study of fragrance and mood. Businesses are taking note as well. Some, including hospitals, airports and offices, have introduced certain scents to reduce stress or increase alertness. In one study, scientists identified scents that can help keep long-distance drivers awake or lull them to sleep, (Achieve solutions, 2015).

“Kyoto University in Japan did a study on the country’s custom of taking forest strolls known as shinrinyoku or forest bathing, and discovered that feelings of depression and anxiety were drastically reduced with participants who walked through pine-filled woods”, (Ngui, 2015). “Distressed? Volunteer to mow your neighbor’s lawn or spritz some Serenascent on – a fragrance derived from the feel-good chemicals released when grass is cut. Discovered by a neuroscientist in Queensland, the green grass smell you know actually helps regulate the release of chronic stress hormones”, (Ngui, 2015). “Studies have even shown that athletes who smell peppermint have improved athletic performance and better breathing”, (Stone, no date).

EMBRACE YOUR SENSORY AND TACTILE EXPERIENCES

Creating Real Connections Through Fragrance With the continuous development within technology today, it seems that everything we do and see in our everyday lives has become reliant on viewing things from a digital perspective and communicating electronically. We are now also seeing the increase of more virtual innovations being brought upon us, which is now overtaking our real life experiences. With this in mind, it is this loss of real connection that is now driving society in to wanting to reconnect with people and their surroundings. Therefore, our desires have become focused on wanting to rebuild these connections, through our personal day to day encounters. This is to help attain back our sensory and tactile experiences with the things we love and cherish.

Recreating certain aromas in to fragrances will also help us to relive certain moments and bring back those warm and fuzzy feelings that we have long missed. Furthermore, this now provides a new outlook on the future of fragrance. This future is one that will focus on creating more personalised scents that hold meaning and embrace our connections with the world.

Recent studies have found that people are now choosing niche scents that consist of more personal and unique smells, over celebrity scents to feel more connections with nature and the environment. With this being said, imagine the connections we could feel by wearing a fragrance that allowed us to reminiscent some of our whimsical moments and experiences. The idea of this provides endless opportunities in to being able to recreate a multitude of smells, such as reminiscing the aroma from passing a certain restaurant or the smell from walking along the beach on holiday.

“According to research from market analysts Mintel, 14 per cent of Brits say they are willing to spend more on unique or hard-to-find scents. And while sales of mass-market fragrances dropped in 2014, sales of fine perfumes actually rose that year, driven, says Mintel, ‘by the rise in niche and artisan fragrances”, (Coleman, 2016). “Culture has changed,’ says fragrance expert Michael Donovan. ‘In the Eighties and Nineties it was about brands, but in the 21st century it’s about celebrating individuality”, (Coleman, 2016).

“Smell is the strongest of the senses and is best able to influence brain activity. Olfactory bulbs are part of the limbic system and directly connect to the areas of the brain that process emotion and learning.” This is one of the reasons why so often something that we smell will trigger a memory or remind us of something or someone,” (Evans, 2012).
