MASSIVE FAILURE Belize City is under a state of emergency. It started Wednesday morning with police in military uniforms and submachine guns and some wearing masks. They were rounding up young men, mostly black unemployed creoles on the poverty stricken south side of our broken down city. The drastic measure, which suspends constitutionally guaranteed rights is the second such since September 2018.

It is an admittance by government of a massive failure after 12 long years in office and an annual budget of one billion dollars that NOTHING was done to tackle a host of social and economic problems on the city’s South Side.

Most of the troubles have been bubbling among teenagers and twenty-odd year olds who were minors when Dean Barrow became Prime Minister in February 2008.

This is part and parcel of his legacy. Not a single constructive sustainable program to put all young people in school; to add school training, agriculture, fisheries, house building and souvenirs making. Not even a housing project where each year two hundred houses could be constructed to ease the overcrowding on South Side.

Nothing, nothing, nothing F for failure.

A sham South Side Poverty Alleviation is painted on a huge billboard. But it was to build streets on East and West Canal and the crony contractors walked away with pocketful of monies. The poverty and helplessness remain and became engrained. F for failure. Barrow, who never showed any concern for poor people all his decades in politics opted for a G.S.U. This Gang Suppression Unit, trained by Israelis, Salvador or Honduras could be likened to gestapos under Hitler’s Nazis. Their record is one of brutality and shame. They attacked poor and marginalized youths, in the process shooting family pets, breaking down doors, stomping and beating, choking, and kicking, unlawful detentions, planting evidence and lying in court. Not under the worst era of

THE BELIZE TIMES 15 THINK ABOUT IT loved money) unlike Moses, Barrow the law-breaker had come to deliver us from our fears of coronavirus. Having exposed his cold, cold heart the week before by budgeting nine hundred thousand dollars, he was now a Savior.

He announced twenty five million dollars of taxpayer’s money would be used to help the tourist industry cancellations. Didn’t stop there. He would get some millions from a bank, he would divert more millions from foreign approved projects, and walla, ding! ding! walla walla, he was up to seventy million. UDP thieves and hustlers saliva were dripping over the floor. Imagine how much will be pilfered between now and elections.

Then there was some foolishness to appoint a “czar”. Sorry, not one two “czars”, to oversee the monies, most of which will be used to bribe voters.

Why was no czar appointed in 2008 when poverty was at 42 percent? Or in 2012 when colonialism has anything of this nature ever been unleashed on the citizens of Belize.

It was an abject failure. F for failure.

It also backfired, in that it destroyed what was left of citizen’s trust in their police officers. Worst, more youths joined more gangs and the murder rate increased under the brutal reign of the Barrow G.S.U.

So outrageous were these unlawful behaviors that a then lame opposition promised the nation they would disband the G.S.U. when they came to power. Today the failed G.S.U. is used as escort for prisoners from Hattieville jail to Courts. A monumental waste of taxpayer’s monies. As older rural folks would say, if they had put these monies into pigs and chickens the results would have been more productive.

Brutality could never be a successful policy alternative to tackling the causes of crime. Crime is the symptom of social and economic problems. Dean Barrow’s failures in this respect are spectacular. Over a thousand murder victims have gone to their untimely grave in the twelve years of his reign. How ironic it is that on 31st January this year Chief Justice ruled that Barrow had repeatedly broken the Finance and Audit law which is a criminal offence.

The UDP government is a criminal enterprise. All their bank books bulge millions of ill-gotten gains. New Commissioner of Police Marco Vidal under the next government first order of business is to investigate and lock them up. Lock them up. It was heartening, Wednesday evening on Love FM news to hear Mayor of Belize Bernard Wagner. He said the upsurge in killings were tragic and unacceptable. But his lone voice of truth was important, young people have lost hope, with no jobs, no future and nuff frustration they have been overcome with negativity On Monday 16th March, 2020, the optics infested Prime Minister staged one of his “press conferences” swollen with the usual suspects, sycophants, cronies and ars lickers applauding like robots.

This time the law breaker Prime Minister was wearing the robes of Jesus, or at least one of the Apostles (not Judas, who it was at 45 percent or in 2015 when it was at 48 percent. Now it is 51 percent. One out of every two Belizeans are living in poverty, thanks to Dean “law breaker” Barrow. The Prime Minister who cuddles corruption.

Why couldn’t a ten million be obtained to fight poverty? What became of Hugo Chavez’s generosity from which Barrow blew away a whopping, incredible five hundred million dollars? The money was specifically to be used to help poor people lift themselves up through low income housing, micro business, skills training, agricultural productivity, and import substitution programs.

In the name of Jesus how could Dean Barrow ruin our country so bad?

Ed. Note: The opinion(s) put forward in this article is that of the author and not necessarily of the Belize Times nor the People’s United Party. PRICE GOUGING If your hand sanitizer, it ridiculously expensive you need to report this as it is definitely against the spirit of the antiCOVID-19 efforts, and may be criminal abuse. This would apply to other goods that are necessary at this time of national crisis and looming catastrophe. A business sense can only go so far. Overpricing a product because someone will have to buy the product at this time is downright abusive and business establishments are duly warned. The Belize Chamber of Commerce spoke out as did the government that placed their teeth into the matter.
